The Bell Rock came to our rescue when our flight was cancelled and we had to spend an unplanned additional 3 nights in Hughtown. The hotel is spotlessly clean throughout and very comfortable. We were given room 2 on the second floor, which is lovely if you can manage two flights of stairs (there isn’t a lift). The room is big with a comfortable superking bed (if made for two) and a view of the harbour over the rooftops. This window was a great spot for watching the sunset! The spacious bathroom has a powerful shower over the bath and yet another window with a sea view. The pool, in its own building, was a real asset, if a little chilly and the benches outside the front of the hotel were a nice sunny spot for reading in the afternoons. All of the staff were kind, friendly and very competent. A big thank you to you all for a lovely few days.

Limited menu, lacked enterprise. Over priced. £35 for 3 courses. Prices not stated on the website nor on the menu. Service adequate. We felt short-changed. They were very busy with a noisy group, but that wasn’t the main problem. Must do much better to charge at this price level.

Unless you are particularly fond of paying a premium price for mediocre microwaved food in stuffy '60s surroundings, then I would give this place a wide berth!

Didn't realise this hotel takes coach party stays, so it had a busy atmosphere and quite dated. Quite loud, most people eating at the same time. Small menu choice, but did have a vegan choice. The food was hot and simple . Friendly service. I would say overpriced for what we had, but gave a VERY GOOD due to service and food.

The sign outside said non-residents welcome to use restaurant and bar. When we called in to get a drink we were asked if we were residents - said no at which point we were told they could not serve us. Do these people want to make a profit or not?!

Situated in the basement, the restaurant looks out on the swimming pool. Nice traditional food, with so much choice and large portions. We liked everything on the menu!

Whilst the hotel’s external appearance is impressive, the interior is a big disappointment. The restaurant lacks atmosphere and feels in a time warp with a menu to match. This is a budget hotel. Better food value can be found at another hotel nearby. Our food experience was poor. The mains arrived within minutes and the sweets - particularly the creme brûlée- were not well prepared. We would never go again.

Had a very pleasant evening here. Had pre dinner drinks in the front garden overlooking the road and catching the last of the evening sunshine. Our three course meal was good. The wine was superb, needless to say we drank too much of it. The service was very friendly and very attentive. The bill came to more than we had planned on spending but that was due to the amount of wine we consumed and we were on holiday !

We ate here each morning and evening during our stay. There was a good choice of cereals, cooked food and breads for breakfast, and a reasonable choice of food on the evening dinner menu. The food was served promptly, and we enjoyed the quality and range of the food on offer.

Seven of us went for an evening meal whilst on holiday (our 37th visit to the islands). Very pleasant and no real complaints although the menu was very restricted and the lay out of the hotel is a bit quirky. Overall, we would happily eat here again but, knowing the island(s) well, we would rate other restaurants more highly.

A bright dining room and tables with sparkling glass and silverware on pristine table cloths with proper napkins. A warm welcome to us even though we were not hotel guests. The service was exceptional with courteous and efficient staff. It seems there is always a well thought through menu with (hurrah!) innovative no meat options. We were impressed by the excellent qualiity of the food, delicious and well presented. The whole execution is very professional. Tea or coffee served afterwards in the lounge is a great idea. You don't feel pushed out after you have eaten and relaxing with a few books or a chat to other diners is a lovely way to spend the evening. A visit in September was reflected in the age range but it was non-the worse for that. (No mobile phones to be seen and everyone knew how to hold a knife and fork properly) Two discerning diners well impressed! The Bell Rock Hotel managers are to be congratulated on their staff and standards.

We had dinner at this hotel, and found the dinning room very clean, well decorated and inviting. There were adequate staff, and service was prompt, pleasant and efficient. Portion sizes were sensible, and we were able to partake of a three course meal without feeling over full. Complimentary bread at the commencement of the meal was excellent, but sadly we were not offered a second piece! The starter of wild boar pate was very pleasant, and the white fish main course (we could not find the name of the fish on 'Google' after the meal, and assume that the fish does actually exist!) had a good flavour, but perhaps a little over cooked. The vegetables let the main course down, as they were mass cooked and over cooked. We had to ask for a side plate to put the main centre bone of the fish on, so that we could eat the flesh underneath this bone, and a side plate should have been provided automatically. The mango fool as a dessert was fine. Coffee after the meal was complimentary. To the hotel's credit, it offered a few half bottles of wine, which is excellent when on one person drinks wine.

We have not been to the Isles of Scilly for 4 years, but we decided to return for a 'catch up' and rather than stay in this hotel, booked an excellent self catering bungalow, owned by the proprietors. We decided to dine at the Bell Rock for the first evening after our delayed somewhat long journey by boat, rather than flying as planned. We were warmly greeted by the manager Daniel and head waiter Adrian and we had some pre-dinner drinks (Daniel the manager had remembered our favourite aperitif)!. We opted for the three course dinner, with a good selection of 4 or 5 choices for each course. The food was presented swiftly and was very appetising. This restaurant is very popular and you need to book.Coffee and mints are included in the cost and are served in the relaxing surroundings of the bar. All very good value.

I stayed in room 25, which is a little out the way, down by the swimming pool, it was clean , comfortable and had everything for a comfortable stay. The only negative , was the fact that the only window in the room overlooked the inside onto the pool, which made you feel a little like you were on show, even though the room had a net curtain. The atmosphere in the dining room seemed a little somber at times, no atmosphere and the staff didn't particularly seem happy. But all in all , it was value for money.

We were enticed by the 3 course price advertised outside the hotel and the coupon for a 10% discount from Skybus ! The bar was impeccably clean - very friendly bar staff. The restaurant is downstairs though with a view of a small swimming pool which made it feel like a cheap holiday hotel. Some lovely local pictures on the walls and very attentive waiting staff. Food OK, well presented and tasty. But why potato croquettes when new potatoes are freely available ?

We were non-residents who made a table booking following praise for the evening meals by a hotel guest. If you are on an ‘all-in’ priced package you might be more than satisfied. If you are not, then be warned – you might have higher expectations than can be met. If you like a 4-inch head on your beer and you don’t expect the menu to appear when you say that you have a table reservation, the bar staff will not be a problem. If you want a steak, then you must order before 11.00 that morning – not necessarily that easy. Catering seems very much to relate to the expected numbers dining: so if you are last, the options on the menu become increasingly unavailable. Half the main courses and most of the sweets were ‘gone.’ Likewise, kitchen and restaurant staff seemed very keen to go once the ‘all-in’ diners had left. The food was disappointing: dried (not fresh) coriander in the soup, frozen peas, fish that was rather dry and chewy: and presentation that varied between two identical dishes. Not sure either whether thin strips of salty bacon go with white fish, perhaps a white wine sauce would be better. So, perhaps we were there on the wrong night: I trust so and hope that you, like the hotel could, do better.

All the food was fresh and exceptionally tasty. We were in a party of 16 very different people and yet everybody enjoyed the food. Every night the menu was different = there were no repeats on any courses (except fruit juices were offered as a started every night). The choice was 3 starters (incl fruit juice, soup +1 other) 4 mains (incl fish and a vegetarian dish) and 5 puddings (incl 1 hot). The difficulty was often trying to choose between several very tempting dishes!

The restaurant is open to non-residents. But you should book ahead! We were staying in a nearby B&B and were attracted by the menu (which changes daily) because so many of the dishes sounded tasty and appealing. There is a set price (I think £18 for 2 courses and £22 for three) which includes coffee and a mint (served in the lounge) after the meal. There are no hidden extras (you don't pay extra for vegetables as seems to be the irritating habit in some modern restaurants). For the sweet course you go up to a table and look at the choice (all very tempting). If you choose cheese and biscuits, then you do not have to pay extra (another modern irritation in some restaurants). This is a very well-regarded hotel, so it is no surprise that in the dining room there are always clean tablecloths and proper napkins while the very friendly and efficient staff wear matching uniforms. We spent three nights on the Scilly Isles and went there every night: always extremely satisfied. The fourth night, back in Penzance, we eat in one of Tripadvisor's top-rated restaurants --- it was not nearly as good (and the irritations noted above all applied).
