Our night with friends turned out to be extremely disappointing. The venue was cold and lacked atmosphere and the food underwhelming. All six of us were dissatisfied with what we had. The menu was very limited, the portions of food were small but even so, we ended up with food left on our plates. When we received the bill , we were unhappy at how much we had to pay for such poor quality food. Safe to say , we will not be frequenting this restaurant again and will spread the word.

I always struggle with the menu in this restaurant. There’s often nothing that jumps out at me but when I do decide on something and it arrives it is always surprising and delicious. It was the same with the starters last night, which were outstanding. However, one of our main courses was not. The pork collar (the most expensive dish on the menu) was all fat and was pretty inedible. The kitchen’s response to our feedback was that Iberico pork is always fatty and pork collar is even fattier still. That’s no answer – generally Iberico pork collar is a highly marbled meat that is rendered down to give flavour, but there was no meat, only marble! I suppose a warning that there’s no meat might have helped, but I suspect they hadn’t realised that our serving was just fat. I was not impressed by the way the restaurant handled my criticism. They did take it off the bill but the implication was still that I should have known that is how pork collar would be. We left without having dessert. The evening had been cut short as only one of us had a main course and we left feeling very disappointed.

The food as ever was tasty, however main dish choices were underwhelming. The wine list is very minimal, compared to when the restaurant first opened. The wine list is also overpriced for the quality and lack of choice.

What a fabulous place this is. The menu is simple and invites curiosity. They serve small plates and large plates - I had two small plates and they were simply delicious. The beef tartare was a twist on the classic version but all the more interesting for it. I generally recognise a small menu as meaning they do those items very well, and that rule of thumb was proved right. The head chef (who was rocking the Richard Dreyfus in Jaws look phenomenally) was in complete control. The wine was very very good (it should be at that price) and the service was great. I am struggling to think of anything negative to say…

Disappointing in many ways. The portions are exceptionally small and the prices exceptionally high. As an example, my mussel starter comprised of only about 10 small mussels, some cherry tomatoes in a watery sauce with one dry slice of toast. The pasta main dish could have come out of a tin. The wine was mediocre and expensive at over £30 / bottle. This restaurant doesn't fit in St Leonard's, it's too expensive and too pretentious.

Our first visit….Excellent lunch! They have a shorter cafe menu…. Very attractive place, good service, delicious Italian-type food. I had riboletta - very tasty. Only one little niggle - their sourdough bread was very crusty - hard to eat. One of us had pate with toasted sourdough - very hard! Hope they have softer loaves as well…

When Bayte opened last summer there was an issue with their booking system. We waited until a bleak weekend in February and were most impressed how smoothly everything happened. Max greeted me by name and we were well on our way. The careful fresh locally sourced exciting menu with some superb choices. The rare aged beef was sumptuous and my fellow diners greatly enjoyed their fish dishes, we all shared an amazing desert which is a rare thing. The ambience is calm, chilled and unhurried, the team know the drill. Even down to the music 🎶 which worked so well. My friends down from Marylebone were very impressed and said they would return, which is a huge compliment from them. They commented this restaurant would be at home in both New York and Copenhagen meat packing district. We loved the industrial vibe. Well done Ruby, Silvy and Max. We will be back. Welcome Bayte to St Leonards-On-Sea, an incredible addition to the exciting foodie scene here.

I really recommend this place. The food is first class. Having eaten there a couple of times I queried who the chef was and found out that it’s a talented young guy who was trained at Brat which is incredible and my favourite restaurant in London. It came as no surprised to learn this. The food is imaginative well, cooked and balanced. The ingredients are home grown/sourced and the atmosphere very good. It’s quite clear from the outset that this is a restaurant that has a agenda.

This is only a judgement on coffee by all accounts’s the food is great. I had an awful coffee and I’m pretty certain it was the Barista at fault and not the coffee. Please don’t put anyone on this job who hasn’t been properly trained or isn’t being supervised. About half of a good cup of coffee is the person who makes it. Barista training needed.

Love the place but you have got to sort out the timings. For the third time I went to get a pre-gym coffee this morning at around 7.10 (last time was closer to 7.15) to be told - sorry, the coffee machine is still warming up. If you are advertising as open at 7am then you need to be serving coffee a few mins after. The coffee is good but in future I'll just go to the guy at the station. He's your only competition at that time so I suggest you up your game and be ready at 7 (every day). Outside of that you're such a welcome addition to the St L. gastro scene and I've had dinner with you a few times - all lovely.

Just popped in for a coffee - been meaning to go in since it opened last year - pleased I did. Firstly, it's casual and light interior made me feel right at home, especially with the choice of background music, which was age proof. I really like the sanded cement type wall and ceiling beams and surfaces. The people behind the counter were both productive and friendly, and the toasted banana cake with espresso butter I was tempted to try was absolutely delicious. All in all, somewhere to visit again with friends and family to try more of the scrummy looking food on offer. Thank you ♥️

This was a special birthday meal for me and I had wanted to try Bayte since seeing how attractive it looked during the summer. The ambience is bistro and a lot more - great decor, stylish, simple but comfortable decor, and it is wonderful to see the food being prepared by such competent chefs. The starters and dessert dishes were many and varied, and inventive! Between us all, we tried all the mains and I had the brill, which was so well-cooked and delicious, and a first for me. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable, and kindly took photos of our family group. If you want to try something different, Bayte is highly recommended. What a change from fast food, and a welcome addition to the dining scene in St. Leonards.

We popped in for a quick bacon sandwich and coffee before shopping on Saturday. Quick service, tasty bacon sandwiches and the reason for this review is to call out the service we observed to others. The server with the brown hair and beard obviously knew his locals, and listening to him chatting to his regular clients was heartwarming, as for many he may be their only interaction that day. He was explaining to a lady that he was due to be off and that he would be back and that she wouldn’t see him for a few weeks. The young lady that delivered the sandwich to us was equally charming but both my husband and I sat listening to the chat across the counter and both said how nice it was to hear. So well done to the server, great customer service goes a long way!
