Wine list is far too big and grossly overpriced. Bottle of Rioja Crianza is £6 in a store. They list it at £48 but actually over charged us, £52. The waitress had no idea how to remove the foil cap from the bottle so I opened it for her. Then they add a service charge!!! So a VERY ordinary bottle of red was 60 quid. More than Hambleton Hall down the road that has a Michelin star. Food is mainly bought in catering/pub standard at restaurant prices. The room is very nice but the staff are untrained & so avoid interaction with the customer. We were the 1st people in for lunch yet I had to ask to be served more than once. The worst overpriced establishment in Rutland by some distance.

We were a party of four having Sunday lunch and two had roast beef and two had the sharing combo platter. The platter arrived but the waitress then had to go and get plates. Plates arrived but we then had to ask for serving spoons and the gravy and all the while the food was going cold. I enjoyed my roast beef but was only given two roast potatoes, which I thought was a bit mean, and they tasted either like they’d been hanging around or had been cooked from frozen. Our bill had a service charge of almost £25 which is ridiculous and had we not been dining with friends, I would have refused to pay that amount.

Shared a leisurely girls lunch here yesterday and I cannot wait to go back! The flavours in the meals were a party in the mouth, you could taste Chef Diago's culinary love in every bite! The cauliflower popcorn was a delight, nicely balanced with umami flavours, yet you could still taste the nuttiness of the cauliflower. The fish pie with seasonal greens was like a much needed warm hug in the rainy afternoon, had to get it packed due to the portion being too big and wanting to leave space for dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was an classic quintessential dessert done right, perfectly paired with the creamy mascarpone ice cream. Of course the food has to be matched by the service, and Sue was the perfect hostess. Attentive enough to rush over with a new fork when I clumsily dropped mine, brought water for the table without being asked, and maintained a high spirit throughout, even asking the kitchen regarding our dietary needs. Highly recommend!

A great venue in terms of the location and appearance of the restaurant and gardens , however, the service was very poor and the food was extremely disappointing. I had Asparagus as a starter and for £14 I was expecting it to be well presented and well cooked; it was too hard and virtually tasteless. The main course was meant to be pea and mint risotto but the consistency was stodgy and the only thing I could taste was pepper so I sent it back. For dessert my partner and I ordered chocolate and vanilla ice cream but were then were presented withe two scoops of vanilla each. Although the young ladies serving were pleasant enough it was clear that insufficient training had been provided as when we arrived we were provided with menus but were not offered a drinks menu. We did get our bill discounted because of these problems but it was meant to be a special meal at a special place for my partner so we were hugely disappointed by the overall experience.

Expensive tasteless food! We had dinner last night. Waitress was very nice but failed (we found out too late) to let us know the ‘ specials’ My wife had asparagus starter that was basically ice cold with egg yolk. It had a few squirts of it as my starter had one which was a waste of time. I had steak tartare that was ok. My main was herb crusted lamb with a mix of beans. Extremely small portion and the herb crust only appeared on three of the five small slices (£34!!!) side of baby new potatoes with a bit of mint on (£6) It’s cheaper at Hitchens Barn that’s a Michelin Star restaurant!! We declined the desserts after the heavy disappointment on the first two courses! Also had a bottle of red wine that I’d have been gutted had I only paid £10 in a supermarket never mind the price we paid here. Pleasant staff but extremely overpriced for the quality of the food.

I found out after going to the bar to get some drinks that a 10% service charge is included after I had paid. It clearly states on the bottom of the bill that it includes an optional 10% of service charge can be removed from the bill on request. I emailed Barnsley about this and their response was a service charge has not been added but in says on the bill including not added. Now they are ignoring my emails. We were a group of 51 people out for a Xmas meal so I will be advising our club secretary to book somewhere else next year.

A beautiful setting but the food was very disappointing. One selection made was HamHock Terrine, a main course lunch described as a light bite. The menu stated Ham Hock terrine with potato salad and an egg. The food arrived on a tea plate, with said terrine accompanied by one new potato with mayonnaise and half a soft boiled egg. The food was ok in quality but should have been a starter. Such poor value for money, we asked for bread and butter which they provided without cost but we won’t be visiting again anytime soon. My husband left the restaurant, feeling he’d been robbed.

My partner and I booked a table for Sunday lunch. The gentleman who appeared to be in charge was very professional and welcoming. Unfortunately we decided to leave before dining as there were several dogs in the restaurant. A couple of them started barking loudly. Personally we do not like mixing food with animals. It was a real shame as the menu looked superb. We would happily visit again but not with dogs.

Called in to see the newly transformed hotel. Found our way to the bar but had to go back to reception to find the barman. Couldn’t produce a glass of either Malbec or Merlot but came up with a mix. We did choose two of Sancerre, two of the red wine glasses of 175 wine and the bill was £53.00! Certainly won’t be going there again as we could have had two ok bottles in other local places. We were looking forward to trying Barnsdale Lodge by way of a change especially as it is under new management. The lounge area was comfortable with a relaxing ambiance but there was a mix up over pre dinner drinks so I ended up drinking my aperitif with my first course. To be fair it was probably my fault for not requesting it earlier than I did. The wine list is just that and does not contain prices for other beverages. I was pleased to have a table with cloths and linen napkins. The meal was nicely cooked but not an extensive or particularly interesting menu. The shock came at the end of the meal when we realised too late that 10% is added on to the bill and that includes all drinks. There is a note at the foot of the bill but no other indication on the menu that a service charge is added. The small print does say you can request that this be refunded. Stupidly we didn’t check and left a tip too. A salutary lesson. We won’t be returning as we felt a bit miffed about the whole experience.

My husband & I decided to treat ourselves to a saturday night meal at this lovely local hotel restaurant. We did pre-book rather than just leave it to chance, which was probably wise as when we arrived there was a wedding party next door.On arrival we were shown to the restaurant & decided to have a drink first in the adjacent bar as we were early for our 6.30pm reservation. The barman was very friendly & helpful. A gentleman who we presume was in charge of the restaurant then appeared & said he was showing us to the table, before walking off (no offer to carry the drinks or check if we were following him). The wedding had obviously put them under pressure as less than half the tables were set for dinner (the remainder already laid out for breakfast). We were given menus & then very quickly expected to place our order. The whole evening felt as if we were being rushed through & there was a distinct froideur in the atmosphere, with our gentleman serving us being quite curt & aloof. On a positive note the food was absolutely delicious & there was an excellent choice of reasonably priced wine (for a hotel).Purely on a personal level,I also strongly disagree with restaurants who automatically put a 10% service charge on the bill - not because I wouldn't normally tip,but I feel the customer should decide. As we left the restaurant, the gentleman who had served us was at the desk, but didn't even look up nor wish us Good evening, which was disappointing. We would go back again, but hope next time it will be a warmer welcome

Many years since eating here but environment and service still delightful on a cold February night Menus choice was limited and quite basic. Probably fine for hotel guests eating there but not worth travelling in from elsewhere in Rutland. Chosen food was ok but also pretty basic in presentation and flavour. Suspect this might be about the general shortages of chefs right now. However the annoyance was the cost for an uninspiring evening overall. Would have preferred the honest and cheap pie specials they used to run in January and February in the past.

We had a very enjoyable lunch in the conservatory restaurant on a lovely sunny day in the middle of September, only a few weeks after it's re-opening. A plus for the hotel is that you wouldn't have known it had only just opened again.Yes there were a few entirely understandable differences due to covid such as not being able personally to get your drink from the bar. We had a very nice table overlooking the very attractive courtyard and next to an extension which I think is new to me and where you can walk through to a large and relaxing lounge area, from the restaurant. Our server for want of a better word was Linda who was an absolute star who coped admirably with my companion's somewhat exacting requirements, requests and suggestions through the meal and with great patience, tolerance and good humour. My NZ Faultline sav blc was very good and decently priced at £9.15 for a 250 ml. We both enjoyed the trio sausage with mash and broccoli but I have to be honest and say there must seemingly be a dearth of potatoes in Rutland as the portions of mashed potato were minute and nowhere enough for the three excellent Rutland sausages. We enjoyed our coffee and tea in the adjacent lounge which Linda kindly arranged before sitting outside in the courtyard in the sun for a short time.arranged. I was happy with the bill at £61.27 which also included another glass of wine, soft drink and ice cream x 2 but they do automatically add a 10% service charge to the bill.In summary a very enjoyable lunch and occasion and I can re-iterate that Linda, you are a star! I would be very happy to return here.

We went for dinner one evening. The place has a charming old world shabby chic feel. The front of house welcome was very poor, we nearly decided to leave. However, we were glad we didn't because the food is very good and reasonably priced. The dining room staff were OK, certainly better than the front of house staff. As we continue to try and sample new places to eat in Rutland, since moving here at the back end of 2015, we thought we would give the restaurant at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel a try for my birthday lunch in March of 2017.A lovely setting, with plenty of parking, it is a hotel after all.We were seated in the garden room, surrounded by glass, which made it fabulously light, the only issue is it was quite hot so i wonder what it would be like in the summer? This is a nice place to eat, with nice surroundings and good food.My wife, my son and I were joined by my mother (father was on a "lads" trip to South Africa), which means any restaurant needs to cater for an 8 year old, a vegetarian, a man who despises "haute quisine" and my mother who has a reasonably refined palate. Barnsdale Lodge catered perfectly for us all. My gastropub burger was a sight to behold and a pleasure to taste. The lunch menu is perfectly suited for lunch and the dinner menu for evenings is suitably refined. My only "complaint" would be that as i don't drink beer or lager, i consider myself something of a cider connoisseur, so when i am faced with a choice of Strongbow/Stowford/Magners on tap or a fruity cider i feel, slightly let down, but only very slightly! i could have very easily had a nice glass of white wine from the solid wine list. It just feels that somewhere like Barnsdale Lodge should have some boutique/local cider available rather than "chain" ciders. A trick missed perhaps? The decor was perfect for the location and the ambiance was lovely, which is sometimes a problem with hotel restaurants.I am sure we will be back, this time with my father in tow.Highly recommended.

I ate Quail for a first course and the fish special (plaice) for main. All very reasonably priced and beautifully presented. It was so difficult to choose. Breakfast equally well cooked and interesting choices of fish and traditional fare. Service excellent

A great place for a group of diners. Staff are attentive and helpful and the dinning area in the conservatory is bright and airy. The food is of good quality with locally sourced ingredients, well prepared and presented.

Went here for a group meal with one of the local clubs. Had to pre order food, but there was a good range of choices. Had a separate room for our group which was great and the service and food was excellent.

Stayed the night in the hotel and ate in the restaurant. Wellcome was friendly but efficient rather than relaxed. I ordered the local Rutland water trout and this came as a large fillet on top of crushed new potatoes. The fish was well cooked, maybe a touch over but was moist with a delicate flavour. It went well with the crushed new potatoes and the olive tapanard. For desert I had plum crumble whic was excellent. Overall a really good meal with nothing to complain about, service was very professional but a little cold for me, certainly not unpleasant but as a solo traveller I prefer a more approachable style. Prices were also maybe a little high hence the 4 rather than 5 stars.

Not a very wide range with only five choices at the time that we stayed further to my disliking three of the five were beef. However most was good and there was a nice atmosphere

Starter and dessert could not make up for the dreadful turkey main course, definitely one to avoidTwo slice of turkey roll ( not as stated by the staff turkey crown) one dark meat and one very pale meat - tasteless cheap meatRaw pigs in blankets and red cabbage with the colour drained out soaked in vinegar and rounded off by the left overs of another tables cranberry sauce Worst meal I have had out for an awfully long while and on top of this they tried to charge 15% service chargeNot good value for money

We had our Xmas party here. The 3 courses were pre ordered and followed by mince pies and coffee. The starter and dessert were good but the Xmas dinner was not up to the standard I had expected. The veg were hard, Turkey dry, roast potatoes soggy and greasy, even the gravy was greasy. Sorry Barnsdale, not great for the price of £30 per head. I would not serve this food to my friends. The disk music that followed was pretty bad too

We visited as a group of five for Sunday lunch, we were really impressed by the service and quality of food. The gentleman with a buzz cut I must give extra praise to as he really looked after us, explained the menu in detail and was so welcoming and professional. We had lunch in the dining room with the Vettriano paintings and this room is such a lovely setting for a lunch and drinks. The food was really like a home cooked roast and it was so pleasing to see that the quality of the food served was fresh and to a extremely high standard. Many Thanks and keep up the great work.

We have been going to Barnsdale Lodge for years but had not been for Sunday lunch for a long time so decided as we were back in the UK we would go for my birthday. We were given a table for two near the entrance of the conservatory so it was a little busy my chair kept getting knocked by the waiting staff and other diners because the space was limited.I asked for soup without goats cheese and they kindly offered me plain tomato soup which was kind of them but it was luke warm.My main course was also luke warm. We then had bread & butter pudding for dessert which was dry in places with cold custard. The lady did ask us if we enjoyed our meal and I did say yes as I did not wish to upset my husband as it was a special day. Very disappointed.

We enjoyed our evening meal at Barnsdale Lodge. I had visited several years before, and was pleased to discover that that food and ambience were as good as I had remembered. The food and the service were excellent, in spite of the restaurant and bar being very busy on the evening we were there. There was a wedding in the hotel that evening, and we were surprised and pleased that for the most part it did not seem to affect either the quality of the food or the friendliness of the service. The head waiter did seem to be a little harried, especially early in the evening, and there was some inconsistency in who was bringing our food and taking our orders. We were not offered dessert or coffee until we flagged someone down and asked for it. However, this was a very minor item in an overall good experience and we would not hesitate to return and to recommend the restaurant to friends. One item to note, it would be very easy to confuse this restaurant with another of a similar name nearby, be sure you are visiting (and reviewing) the correct place!

This is lovely place to meet for a meal. Lovely airy restaurant with soft seating areas for after meal coffee. Our lunch time meal was generally OK, but the lemon tart with blackcurrant sorbet was lovely. Generally portions were small.

We took the grandchildren on an overnight stay to Rutland Water, and stayed at this lovely hotel. Friendly staff, gorgeous grounds, comfortable rooms and first-class breakfast, what more could you want! I was intrigued by the steam-free mirror in the bathroom - huge wall-mirror with a still-unsteamed area to see yourself in, ingenious!

Intimate small dining rooms for small, but important occasions. The lodge is historic and tastefully maintained, and the meals are very good. Service was a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry. A place to visit again.

This used to be a great restaurant but when we visited on Sunday the food was terrible : bread rolls were hard and tough, starter of chicken and chorizo was laughable and the main looked like an aunt Bessie's roast with gravy granules. The staff were grumpy, bordering on rude and made no attempt to cater for the needs of the 2 year old we had with us or the individual who had a food allergy. It's almost as if they were treated as an inconvenience. Awful meal : we won't be visiting again.

Attractive informal place.Good greeting by restaurant manageress.Waiting staff polite, but amateurish - sort of sums up the place.Starters: OK - not bad.Mains: beef was really tough and not good, but good selection of veg.Deserts: ok-ish, but not great.Service was very slow.Price reasonable-ish.Unfortunately there was also a wedding on and guests from that kept walking through the main bar and restaurant area - which would have been OK for one or two people, but there were quite a lot.

Limited parking available - yet the restaurant was virtually empty. When asked for a table we were treated as "walk-in" diners and only offered a fixed price menu choice which was very limited. When asked if there was another menu - confusion - eventually told NO as we were treated as "Walk-in" not booked?????!!!! Bizarre

We've been visiting the Barnsdale Lodge restaurant for many years and have always thoroughly enjoyed both our meals and the surroundings. This time, however was very much a disappointment. The food was average, particularly the main course, and the presentation was poor. I had a sirloin steak, which was accompanied by frozen chips, a cooked tomato and a rather small, over cooked mushroom. My dessert was okay, but my wife had the cheesecake, which was more of a white jelly on a biscuit base. The beer I had was presented in a plain glass where its should have been in a branded one. There is an optional service charge which actually means that you have to request to opt out, as it is applied to your bill without you being asked.Overall, we were very disappointed and did not visit again during our week in the area, where we would normally eat at Barnsdale Lodge at least twice.

After spending many years visiting Barsndale Lodge, my family and I decided to pop in for a relaxed lunch. We were seated in the dining room rather than the conservatory which was very elegant but there is quite an awkward dry atmosphere - - some light music would have made a positive difference. The lunch menu is good - not cheap but as expected. It caters for a range of tastes. I would suggest that mustard is left to the customer to put on themselves as it is such a personal taste and I had far too much on my sandwich. Overall, if you are looking for a bit more of a special lunch out without being too fancy, Barnsdale Lodge is thoroughly recommended.

This meal was insane and so beautiful but a touch on the pricey side for the amount you get. I know it's about quality but our bill came to over £100 for two people once service charge was added. Although this place has the best ambience and so cosy and beautiful inside. Staff are so so welcoming and helpful. I do recommend trying this place!

Had a very pleasant family lunch. Lovely atmosphere in the garden room restaurant. Food choice and quality was very good and each of the Mothers had a gift which was a nice touch. Where there is scope for improvement (and we would have rated as a 5) is in the service, which was disappointing. At a hotel of this standard, I would expect better attention to detail - we should not have asked to call a waiter over for a drinks order when we arrived or to clear away after our dessert course. There appeared to be plenty of staff around but no evidence of a good restaurant manager which could have made a world of difference. Disappointing then when you get presented with a bill including 10% service. I would prefer this to be discretionary - I know it can be taken off but makes it slightly more awkward.

We came here for supper as we were staying in Barnsdale Hall and the restaurant there was dead. This is one of my old haunts and it still looked lovely and welcoming although a little 'corporate' .We were asked to sit and have a drink and wait for the menus as they were busy although it only looked half full. In the end go the menus myself. The conservatory was cold and decor nothing like it used to be...... What's with the umbrellas?!The bread was heaven, warm and fresh. The meals were very good but all lacked seasoning which was a shame. Our waitress was brilliant, so polite and helpful, you could t fault her.Nice evening but won't rush back sadly.

Went here for a family meal, to say that this cost 5 of us over £400 there were various items that were very disappointing that I feel I must mention. £18 for a single scallop starter in some flavoured cream foam seemed excessive. One person's slow cooked short rib was tough and flavourless masked by toppings, one person's pork ribeye was chewy and dry with a side of extremely dry roasted new potatoes, squid ink pasta fish dish served with an odd green sauce and raw carrot ribbon and the pasta was dry and didn't taste of much, barely any vegetables on any of the dishes, and to top it off waitress tried to put red wine jus sauce onto husband's beef rib after he said SEVERAL times he didn't want it as does not like anything with alcohol in it (yes even if cooked off!) and she didn't seem to want to take no thankyou for an answer. Also his mash provided in a tall sided small bowl with no spoon to get it out with?! Poached pear pudding also disappointing pears were pretty much raw and very hard-so much so that we had to ask for knives for them that were slammed down on the table. Didn't make a fuss about all the lacklustre meals as mothers 70th birthday meal but overall very much style over substance and not worth the price tag. Tables very close together and had people constantly kicking my chair legs as they squeezed past me. Car park and entrance very dark and slippy in places with uneven surfaces

Another fantastic lunch at The Wheatsheaf today. All of our starters and main courses had clearly been carefully planned by the chef and were perfectly cooked and presented. A special mention is needed for the steamed Fowey mussels that were as fresh as you would find at a West Country harbourside restaurant. The service was impeccable as ever.
