Aways a pleasure; staff, food general atmosphere, all great. Waitress, Sienna, friendly and efficient looked after us really well.

What a find on a Sunday evening! The pub we were staying at closed at 6pm and we discovered that many surrounding pubs did too. We arrived at the Barley Mow with some relief only to be told they were fully booked for the evening. However a table was found for us and we were treated to delicious food and excellent service. We are so grateful that they managed to fit us in and would recommend the Barley Mow unconditionally.

Sophie took our reservation over the phone and was so kind and helpful that I knew we had picked the right place to go for lunch. Hannah was our server and was absolutely brilliant. She could not have been more attentive of our needs. A lovely venue and would definitely recommend.

Really nice meal and excellent service with a smile would not hesitate to recommend to friends & family, Heidi , Gaby, Siena, & Annabelle made us feel most welcome and nothing was much trouble

Lovely old pub, had a beautiful tasty meal reasonably priced , staff were very pleasant and helpful we will definitely be going back and would recommend the Barley mow to anyone wanting a nice meal in lovely surroundings.

We stayed at a b&b and needed a meal last minute as a family of 4. Despite the pub being fully booked and only with 3 staff, they catered for us. We had a lovely meal and received first class service, those ladies work exceptionally hard and all with a smile. It was our last night of our holiday and we are so pleased to have spent it there.

It was the busiest I have ever seen, with all tables booked and a stack of people coming in on spec from a rowing event looking to warm up. Fiona, Gabby, Hannah and Freya worked miracles to honour their bookings and accommodate as many additional people as they could. They were unfailingly cheerful and good natured as they served, I didn’t hear any orders go wrong or complaints, despite the constant change of where people were sitting and what they wanted! The food was really great, the fresh hot chips were some of the best I’ve had and the cheesey garlic bread was the perfect thing for a grey day. Lovely atmosphere, huge range of people and wonderful dogs to admire.

Walked in at 8.55pm after a long day and the chef (Shem) happily still made me dinner, despite the kitchen basically closing! Great pub, friendly staff. Cheers

Lovely location and rustic. Food was ok but probably let down by an unwelcoming and grumpy greeting entering the restaurant. Main meals did not arrive altogether and we had to keep chasing. Most of the younger staff were polite but unfortunately our experience was not disappointing due to grumpy mature lady who was probably the manager. Very disappointing! Won’t be going back and just goes to show how important a smile and good customer service can do. Even a child can behave better.

What a wonderful stop! We weren’t sure what to expect however, we were pleasantly surprised. Everything from our wines to our desserts were delicious. No disappointments! Sophie, Libby, Gaby and Fiona were attentive staff that made our dinner even more perfect. Highly recommend a stop at the Marley Bow.

The Barley Mow remains a delight. Attentive, friendly and efficient, the staff turn a beautiful location into a wonderful retreat. Worthy of mention amongst the staff are Sienna, Sophie, Libby and James. Lunch here is a treat.

Very disappointing. Food was strange. Had vegetable tart (which had seeds in and no vegetables ) with salad, potatoes and Gravy. The combination of salad and gravy just did not go and when we mentioned this to the waitress, after she asked if we enjoyed our meal, our feedback was completely dismissed. Will not return

The Barley mow has a great family atmosphere. The menu changes seasonally and the staff have always been friendly, accommodating and understating of any child related menu pickiness which is always a relief as a parent! The food is reasonably priced and there is always something to take your fancy…sometimes too much which makes decision making very hard! Lots of choice on the bar too, which the husband is always happy about! Long may this all continue!

We’ve been coming to the Barley Mow for almost 50 years (!) and it almost never fails to please. Some new items on the menu which we tried and were very good. Served by very friendly staff in particular Freya, James and Libby. Thank you for a lovely evening.

I booked the Barley Mow a couple of weeks ago for a special event, and they did not disappoint! I emailed the venue and was in touch with the General Manager, Fiona, who was brilliant in helping me make the booking look and feel special. My partner and I had a wedding ceremony on the day of our booking and Fiona was very responsive, helpful and caring when it came to arranging things for the 6 of us that came to have a meal. The staff on the day were fantastic. Ella, the Assistant Manager, was friendly and welcoming to us the moment we arrived and we had welcome drinks on our table, as well as some lovely decorations to make it feel more special. Heidi and Fred were also brilliant in their service with us, even when some in the party took forever to decide what food they wanted! They were both patient, attentive and made us feel so welcome. Thank you Fiona, Ella, Heidi and Fred. We loved our booking and we can't wait to come back for more food soon!

We went as a family of five for a special occasion. On arrival the staff member was friendly, our waitress lacked any warmth or interest. There was a very limited choice for vegetarians and vegans. The child’s ‘meatball’ pasta was macaroni with a beyond burger cut up and some pale red Neapolita bland sauce. The peas can only be described as akin to bubbles in a bubble tea, but with a slightly thicker filling. The sriracha beyond burger lacked flavour, barely at all sriracha, dry and lacking salad or topping. The mushroom and ale pie was mostly sauce though the pastry was substantial, if a little indigestion inducing, Fish and chips was standard, kids fish goujons was actually a slightly smaller Atlantic cod. A great deal with a fair sized fish at less than half the adult price! Disappointing for a 7 year old wanting dunkable goujons. Service was abrupt and ungenuine. We asked for water after our drinks, a jug was brought but no glasses. The pub was not busy and closing early for (much needed) staff training. We certainly won’t go back and would only recommend for those that eat fish or meat and want standard, or sub standard pub grub.

We are from Sussex and were staying in Abingdon on a short break with friends from Dorset. Whilst in Abingdon I asked the shopkeeper of The Shed (a shop in the town) if she could recommend a pub outside of the town for dinner the following evening. Without hesitation she told us The Barley Mow at Clifton Hamden (about 4 miles away) would certainly meet our needs. This turned out be very true. This country pub is a wonderful example of how comfortable guests could be made to feel on entering a pub. The ambience and staff proved to be a welcome start to the evening. We ordered dinner from a wide range of options and all four of us commented on the quality and presentation of the food served. Value for money was the best we have come across for many a year. The standard of food presented by the two chefs would have been well received in any five star restaurant. I would recommend this pub to everyone. Seek it out and enjoy yourselves.

I visited the Barley Mow with a friend for dinner last week. I had been before for breakfast and had always had a great time. The staff are polite and welcoming, the food is very good and I love the fire on a cold day. However, it was my first time in the evening and I was disappointed. Although the staff was not exactly rude, we were rushed to pay and leave, being told at 2115 that they were closing in 10 minutes. We really got the sense that they wanted rid of us. My friend and I don't see each other often and it would have been good to be told at the start of the night that they were going to close early, we would have chosen a different place. In short, if you want a nice pub for a quick meal (or breakfast), this is your place. If you want more time with your friends, maybe look somewhere else or ask before.

We have used The Barley Mow at Clifton Hampden many times. It is a charming character place to enjoy a meal and a drink or two. The food is always of a very high standard and reasonably priced which is why we tend to use it for special occasions such as Burn's Night and Mother's Day. Our latest visit was on Mothering Sunday and all 3 courses were delicious (although we were full up before dessert). There was a good choice on the menu for each course, and the waiters were very friendly. We will be back again in the near future.

Amazing as always…our favourite pub with glorious food. Love visiting here as often as we can. Sue is such a lovely waitress who will do anything to make the experience a great one

Spur of the moment lunch on a sunny weekday. Nice interior, but we wanted to eat outside. This was ok but choice of tables limited apparently due to lack of staff ?. Food ok but we are pretty fed up of ordering meals with 'triple cooked chips' and getting something no better than supermarket oven chips. Service was good, venue nice enough but wouldn't probably go back

Sue our waitress made the visit very enjoyable and with her sense of humour lightened the evening greatly . Food was fantastic , lots of it and sensibly priced . Great choice from a menu that has something for everyone. Would definitely recommend the Korean chicken strips for starters . Overall I would give this trip a 9/10 (air con in the restaurant area we were sitting would have given it a 10. Will definitely be coming back .

Good food, great service and a lovely atmosphere. The place is dog friendly and has a nice beer garden. Serves food all day which is great if like us you are always turning up at 3pm for Sunday lunch

This pub restaurant is impressive both from the outside and the interior albeit mind your head on the low ceilings. Plenty of choice on the evening menu along with a specials menu. Being a Wednesday, we noticed the supper club offer of 2 courses for £13.99 which turned out to be awesome value. Both the hunter chicken and the red wine pie were both tasty and plentiful. We both had the Eton Mess sundae which was delicious. Friendly service and covid secure measures ensured we had a memorable meal experience.

What can i say; environment was blush and food was diligent. Sue is a alcohol specialist. We left so soon i couldn’t thank the person serving us earlier in the evening, she was cute thou. however great time will be visiting again

Popped in after a little dog walk by the river. Table straight away, ordered drinks and before we knew it water for "pippa" shortly followed by a doggy Sunday roast. Never had this before and so welcoming from the staff. Great place for a lazy Sunday drink or a roast judging by the dogs empty bowl....

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Lovely waitress called sue looked after us, she even gave our dog some roast beef.

Making the most of the good weather I sat in the harden on my latest visit to this riverside country pub.I parked in the large car park across the road from the restaurant. The garden is medium size, and although it is on the river, there is no direct view of the river.From the extensive menu I opted for the large Mezze Platter, usually a sharing dish.It contained, battered squid, chicken strips, homous with flatbreads, and kofta. The Koftas were lamb, a meat I don't eat, but the staff changed them to sweet potato without any fuss.Staff good as usual

3 of us went to the Barley Mow early on Saturday evening. Social distancing measures were in place so we felt comfortable seated indoors. We all had a starter and a mains and the food was good. The Chef's 'specials' menu offered some new choices which 2 of us had - they were very good. This was a big improvement on our previous visit a couple of months ago. Service was also good and the overall bill was not expensive so we will be back soon.

Most expensive fish course definitely not Masterchef standard! Main fish, hake, was overcooked and no mussel with dish as ordered. Dessert pastry round was dumped on plate and collapsed on one side...poor quality control at pass! But meat courses were OK, and enjoyed by family. Atmosphere of pub and service were excellent. Suggest chef studies or joins Masterchef to improve his/her standard!

Visited in order to meet with a friend. It was a long journey but well worth it. Good welcome and service; excellent food well cooked; and a very pleasant atmosphere even given the irritating need for servers and customers to wear face coverings.We chose the main menu for lunch and found it difficult to choose from the tempting menu. All 3 of us enjoyed our meals and would definitely come back.

Stopped for lunch today and it was absolutely lovely. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, quick service and the food was excellent. I will definitely be stopping by again.

Had an excellent lunch yesterday, pub itself is lovely, staff really quick, efficient and friendly and the food was superb. Would highly recommend the lamb chops on the specials menu and the hake on the main menu.

We have just come back from a superb Sunday Lunch at the Barley Mow. It's the first time we have been back since the covid epidemic. I actually think the Barley Mow has really improved since the last time we were here last summer.The staff were very attentive, polite and relaxed even at such a busy time especially our waitress Tracey. Everyone adhering to rules etc. The food was delicious and plentifully. I would highly recommend a visit.

A lovely pub with great service and a menu that is like a curates egg: good in parts.However the other parts can be pretty badMy wife had a Caesar salad with salmon which was abominable: the hard boiled egg had half cooked white the lettuce was sad the salmon was cooked dry. The. Egan Koofahs were also pretty second rate.A bit more skill and effort in the kitchen perhaps! The service was great: friendly, efficient and charming

Came here with my family for my birthday! Normally we are served by Sue but unfortunately she was not in today, we had lots of different servers but one lady stood out for her rudeness.When asking if we had finished with our starters she was abrupt and short, no smile and quite heavily toned! She then appeared later to sort our bill she was then rude again when questioning me for ID for discount which of course I understand, working for Greeneking myself! I of course know how important customer service is and unfortunately the short lady in the black and white spot top was not very good at it. Will not be returning on a Thursday again for sakes of getting her as our sever!Great food! Shame that one staff member let you down!!!

Lovely meal huge piece of cod, I don't always clear my plate but I did this time, kids meals were lovely they cleared up too, staff were friendly and helpful. Nice fathers day surprise.

We were staying up the road at Clifton Hampden B&B for one night whilst walking the Thames Path. Came here for dinner. Lovely outdoor garden, fast service despite being busy, friendly staff. Really enjoyed it.

We called in for lunch to this old pub and received a warm welcome. There was a very relaxed atmosphere about the place and the choice of dishes were excellent. Lovely choice of starters and main courses . Everything delivered promptly and very good value. Definitely a place to return to.

This delightful 13th century pub stands right next to the Tollgate bridge at Clifton Hampden. It’s the perfect starting or finishing place for a walk along the Thames path, either east, on the south bank, or west on the north bank. The proprietors are so helpful & friendly, as are all their staff. They smile as they wait at the tables - no complicated app to negotiate here. There’s a choice to sit inside, or outside in their pretty terraced garden &, quite often, there’s no need to book in the middle of a weekday. Even if they’re busy when you rock up, they’ll seat you within the hour & you can walk first. The food is fresh & delicious - always piping hot. We particularly recommend the beetroot burgers! Their triple-cooked chips are amazing! Make a point of visiting this slice of South Oxfordshire’s history - you won’t regret it.

We visited with friends late on a Sunday afternoon, the staff were very friendly and welcoming and especially our waitress Sue - three of us had the traditional Sunday lunch which was exceptional with everything freshly cooked, and the fish & Chips (not a very traditional Sunday lunch) were brilliant.Lovely setting with excellent service and very attentive, highly recommended and well priced & well worth a visit.

The food is fantastic, I have been multiple times and the food is always delicious proper pub food and well worth the money. The staff are lovely and very welcoming. We went on a Sunday and they gave our dog water, treats and even a doggy roast dinner.

We went here for a lovely lunch on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago and the staff asked if our dogs would like a complimentary Sunday lunch as we were eating. We thought it was a lovely gesture and our dogs loved it. Many thanks.

First time out in a local restaurant since last year. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.Sat outside with quick service and we both had the battered cod which was lovely. Even had mushy peas!Desserts were tasty too, recommend the chocolate brownie, which will either have you buzzing for the rest of the day or heading off for a nap.

Perfect stop off if you've been out by the river for the day! Plenty of outside seating with greenery and space between tables. We had the Sunday roast which was a great portion and good gravy! Ice cream sundaes to finish and great staff. Sue was very attentive :) will definitely come again (also it's dog friendly!)

We wandered in Sunday afternoon after swimming in the Thames with the kids. Got an outdoor table no worries, quick service, lovely pimms, good burgers AND the dog got her own bag of treats and roast dinner (Yorkshire pud and all!). We'll be back again soon.

Nice looking pub in a nice enough setting.Unfortunately the food here was below average, even for a part of the Greene King chain.The Hunter's Chicken was so tough, it could not be cut through with a knife, the bacon was undercooked and fatty, and the battered cod was soggy.There are plenty of other better pubs in the area, so give this one a miss.

Fantastic food, staff and service. Our party had such a brilliant evening at the Barley Mow. Drinks arrived quickly as did the food. Everything was delicious and the staff are so attentive. We will be back as soon as we can.

We're fairly regular visitors and stopped in for an early evening drink. The staff welcomed us and served our drinks at a comfortable table. We were only there for one drink, but it was a relaxing stop off. Afterwards we were accidentally charged the wrong amount and a member of staff hurtled out to the car park to rectify the mistake before we left - we felt very looked after.

Really lovely food and relaxing atmosphere. Staff are warm & welcoming, a wonderful experience! Ample parking and beautiful gardens.

Very disappointing meal. Starter mushrooms on crumpets which would have been nicer if hotter. My partner chicken pie lack of chicken it was mostly puff pastry. The gravy was very think look like chef used to much cornflour. I had the mixed grill ,the waitress asked how I wanted my steak cooked. Was very surprised to find they was no steak on my mixed grill. The waiter asked if we wanted any sauce. We ask for mustard and mayonnaise. But got given ketchup. Used to like eating at the Barley Mow but want be returning any soon.
