Barkers 1882 Cafe & Bistro in Hambleton

Latte coffee (with extra shot) allegedly large but certainly only medium, small piece of mass produced poor quality cake....£9.05 !!!!! Massively over priced. Waited to be seated and waited to give my order while the member of staff who should have been serving me filled in her paperwork and chatted with staff. My coffee when it arrived was covered in coffee grounds and was undrinkable. I took it back and the woman who served me was very polite apologised and served me quickly with another one. I must say she was the ONLY staff member who showed any customer care at all. If you want over priced drinks and cake along with a poor attitude from staff then pay them a visit. Otherwise I suggest giving them a wide berth!!

Called in for lunch and had a delicious sweet chilli wrap with side salad and triple cooked chips. Excellent friendly, service. Lovely setting overlooking the high street. Would recommend for breakfast/ brunch and lunch early dinner. Separate menus operate. Also they do cocktails!

We have eaten here before and returned as it offers consistently good food that is always freshly prepared and very reasonably priced. The Autumn menu featured a piping for chicken and leek pie but the menus change regularly which is why we keep go back. Lovely staff and peaceful ambience even during a busy lunch hour. Portions sometimes over generous (four arrancini when three would have been an adequate starter), but hardly worth mentioning! Overall good value for money and really freshly prepared meals. We will be going back ( again)

Met a friend for lunch (me coming from Leeds and friend from Newcastle). Grey and blustery day and the bistro was just what we were looking for. Very cosy and friendly atmosphere, delicious comforting leek and potato soup. Staff friendly and attentive but didn’t rush us out, even though they were preparing to go home. Will be back!

Firstly, the whole set up is confusing - customers don't know which cafe they are in-confirmed by one of the staff. Secondly, the tables are stained - a wipe over doesn't cut it. Try JIF or Barkeepers to remove the stains. Some of the chairs are also stained. If this is the standard ‘front of house’, it begs the question of the standard where the public can’t see. Thirdly, the food was terrible. I chose the Fish and Chips - it was swimming in grease to such an extent that the batter - which was nice at the top, was reduced to a soggy mess at the bottom and the chips are not real potato. My husband chose steak & ale pie with chips and was served it with potatoes; a portion of chips was then provided but he was pleased to have been served the potatoes as they were much better. No matter how many times you cook 'reconstituted potato' they still taste mushy and dreadful. An absolute waste of money and very surprising and disappointing for Barkers. On the plus side, the staff were very pleasant but sadly we won't be repeating the experience.

Always a good choice of menu with daily specials. Excellent food and service. Been here many times and it never disappoints.

My wife and I go regularly to Barkers 1882 Bistro for breakfast and really like it. The staff are very friendly and attentive and the food and drink is delightful as is the decor and surroundings. I can highly recommend this bistro as the best around.

Ordered poached eggs came really quickly once I cut into them They were raw and under cooked did get refunded but was made to feel awkward in the cafe

We had the most delicious breakfast. The standard of food was of the highest quality, the service was excellent. Each member of staff we met was friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We will certainly return. Highly recommend.

Just had afternoon tea in Barkers 1882 Bistro. It was excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive despite being very busy. The Bistro was clean and comfortable with plenty of room between tables. The food was beautifully served and as much tea/coffee as we wanted. Couldn't have been better.

My friends and I enjoyed the Wednesday special, a fabulous burger with salad, coleslaw and triple cooked chips. We were shown to our seat by Shea. The Bistro was very busy but we were lucky enough to get a window seat. Our server, Sarah talked through the menu. We all decided on the special of the day burger, it came in a fabulous pretzel bun, I have only seen these in New York so we had to try it, we weren’t dissatisfied, absolutely delicious. As I said, the Bistro was very busy, however, Shea and Sarah found the time to come and ask if everything was ok. £14.95 for the food and a glass of wine, beer, or soft drink. We chose wine, because we could :) It was definitely a great experience and we enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the great service.

Barkers cafe is an excellent place to go with friends. The cafe staff are amazing and give an excellent service . There is an assortment of scones and cakes delicious.

Staff at this cafe were just delightful helpful friendly nothing was too much trouble always enjoy the visit go back two or three times a week

My friend and I were treated to the “Sparkling Aternoon Tea”. What a treat it was! The atmosphere and decor is warm and relaxed. We were on table 17 which looks out over Northallerton High Street and offers a great opportunity to people watch! We had a choice of wine and took the server, Laura’s , advice and decided on the pink muscat. Great choice. It complimented the food perfectly. Shea brought out the food and it looked amazing! Almost too good to eat. We loved the attention to detail and the obvious care that had been taken to create it all. It made the occasion feel extra special. Everything tasted beautiful. We enjoyed a lovely pot of tea, in addition to the wine. The service was exceptional. Fast but unobtrusive. Chelsea and Sarah looked after us, and at no point did we feel rushed, or pressured, to hurry to finish. We were very impressed and will definitely book again. Thank you to the staff, Shea, Laura, Chelsea and Sarah. You were a credit to Barkers. We highly recommend the 1882 Bistro.

Great food, value and amazing staff. A visit to Barker’s cafe on a cold and miserable day was soon to be forgotten. I wasn’t sure about the flavour of the homemade soup of the day no problem for the staff a small sample was given for me to try first which was exceptionally tasty, hence I had a combo of soup and a tuna sandwich with plenty of tuna filling, I thought very good value too. Louise & all the staff are friendly offering a welcoming warming smile, a kind word, and a first class service, great food served at a reasonable price! Thank you.

Another great coffee & scone in the Cafe. Call most weeks such a popular friendly Cafe coffee always first class and fab scones, had lunch here too there is a great choice of food. Louise and the team are all friendly, efficient, and accommodating, first class customer service from them all. No matter how busy they get they are all ready with a smile to welcome you. I'll be there again tomorrow.

We often treat ourselves to lunch out and Barkers is our favourite place to eat. We had fish & chips from the 1882 Cafe upstairs and wow they are massive. We have never tasted fish as nice, it is so white and very tasty. It comes we beautiful chips and mushy peas. We have also tried other meals and they are equally as nice. The Staff are very friendly, the place is spotless clean, what more could you ask. Can’t wait to treat ourselves again. Well done Barkers.

We visited the cafe downstairs for our lunch on Sunday. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Having been before for coffee or lunch we have found the cafe to be a welcoming place with excellent staff. The menu is very good, soup, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and of course cakes.

Lovely Cafe clean warm and friendly. Service was excellent very helpful and accommodating Sarah H went the extra mile to ensure our visit was superb Food was lovely I had french onion soup and a afternoon tea special I couldn't fault it and good value too.

Barkers 1882 served delightful food, with a standout being the fish cakes on rice. While the flavors were enjoyable, a touch of salad would add a refreshing balance to the dish. Overall, the dining experience was excellent, consistent with the high standard expected from Barkers 1882.

We go to the cafe down stairs everyday for coffee and always enjoy it. The staff greet us with friendly smiles, nothing is too much for them and always stop to chat to us. The customers are friendly and it’s something to look forward to. The scones are amazing especially the cheese works.

Regular visit to the downstairs part of this cafe bistro. Delicious food that caters well for gluten free. Nothing is too much trouble when requested and the staff are friendly, helpful and keep busy making sure tables are cleared quickly and available.

The food and drinks here are excellent, not cheap but a reasonable price for the place. They’ve clearly taken out tables in order to separate people to make it covid secure so it is a very comfortable spacious environment. Would definitely recommend the hot chocolate...

some people are put dining at a "cafe" in a department store ..... Barkers is different ! Although the table lay out looks similar, the menu options listed and quality of food provided is at a higher level than your previous experience and when coupled with the high level of waitress service makes this a much better experienceif you need to stop in Northallerton and are looking for somewhere to eat pop in to Barkers

After going for a snack yesterday I was really disappointed at the service.We were shown to the table ordered tea for 2 gluten free cake and a sandwich.On arrival the tea came with a large coffee cup which was dirty, I pointed it out to the assistant who's reply was all the cups are dirty it was the cleanest one, I asked her to replace it of which she did.The food arrived no serviett no cutlery to eat the sandwich & salad with I tried to get the attention of an assistant but had no look so ended up eating the salad with my fingers and using tissues to wipe our mouths.My Mum's GF cake came in its wrapper not even given a plate to eat it from.Considering the quality of the store it did not compete with the same standard.Will not be in a rush to go back.

We visited this cafe soon after lockdown allowed restaurants to reopen. We were very impressed by the organisation. We were asked to sterilise our hands and details for track and trace. The tables were well spaced and the service was safely carried out. We had scone with jam and clotted cream which was delicious. Reasonably priced and enjoyable.

We popped in for the Friday Fish and Chip special a few weeks ago and it was excellent, nice big fish and plenty of chips. Can't fault it, will be back soon,

Very dissatisfied and disappointed with our visit we stood and waited as the sign asked to be told sit any where we would normally be shown to a table , the coffee was not hot , the bacon sandwich ordered with an egg came without it, we didn’t check the bill till we got home to find we had been charged for it ! Been in before and the food was ok,but gave them another chance and called in with my wife yesterday the wife had scampi chips salad,I had some sort of ciabatta bread with ham mushroom cheese, chips the chips were under cooked (hard) the ciabatta meal was soggy and the scampi wasn't very tasty.I had a decent cup of tea but the wife had a mocha which was like dish water.When asked was everything ok I told her about the meal she replied I will let the chef know.£28 down the drain.Keep well away.

Nice location well appointed with a choice of seating styles. Particularly liked the comfy seating high chairs by the window. Lovely place to chat and watch the world go by.Nice selection of sweet treats / cakes. A tad expensive for the size.Staff let this visit down im afraid otherwise would have scored higher. Mid afternoon visit and as we were looking at the cakes and chalk board at back of counter deciding staff member yelled " no hot food, kitchen closed" whilst rattling the kitchen closed sign. Why not just approach and ask if we wanted hot food to be aware the kitchen was now closed. Flustered over 4 hot drinks and 4 sweet treats. Left one hot drink at back of counter without completing it. We didn't notice until we got to the table. Poor really. But there you go. I'm sure on another occasion the service would be better though that's not the real point.

We have visited the cafe many times in our trip to Northallerton,it is always fresh food at affordable prices. There is a large selection of cakes to choose from and many snack items as well as hot lunches.

This cafe is one of three in Barkers department store..they are all very good.1882 is table service and we found the staff to be very cheerful and helpful.There were a couple of regulars around but staff were attentive to all diners.This is a traditional set up which made it special.The decor and seating is tasteful and the chairs are very comfortable.Consideration in spacing ensures that customers with limited mobility are not impeded and it is popular with older customers.The access to level one has an escalator and a lift.The food was well prepared and delicious.The service was very good.A very relaxing breakfast.Reasonable pricing and well worth the experience.Whilst inside Barkers there is a diverse range of products which are not on the usual high street..lovely wares.Check out the Northallerton market which has a great selection of good standand .items.This cafe is situated in a central location to the high street.Rail transport is about a quarter of a mile away.Public transport around the region takes Family Explorer tickets ( but do get a timetable).There is short and long term parking behind Barkers store (£4.60 all day).A great day out for all ages.

Walking around a wet Northallerton we required refreshments so passing Barkers cafe we stopped off for coffee and cake, great friendly staff fantastic coffee and scrumptious cakes, we both can recommend. Keep up the great work Team we will be back!
