Bankers Fish & Chips in Brighton and Hove

I have been many times to the Hsngleton branch and travel to do so. The fish chips are usually good. Today I regret to say we're well below the usual standard and highly disappointing.

Bankers, Hangleton Road were offering a special promotion evening of 25% off all Click and Collect orders so we stuck our proposed dinner for tonight back in the fridge for tomorrow! Website was easy to navigate and use and we ordered a large cod with large chips (£1.10 extra), a medium cod and curry sauce. Specified a pick up time but our order was not quite ready when my husband arrived, he had to wait a couple of minutes as the fish was just being fried. Not an issue at all - love freshly cooked fish! Fish was hot, crispy batter, thick fillets, very flavoursome and excellent value. Chips were hot, chunky and crispy - delicious! Curry sauce was just what you want - proper chip shop curry sauce. All in all an excellent experience and with 25% off an excellent price. We will definitely be returning at full price . Well done guys!

Reminder to self- do not go again !! Large Chips £4.45 🫨 I got max of 40 chips. Pale miserable looking things. Staff are always slow and pretty miserable too. Bankers are such a rip off shame there is no local chippy.

Just had large cod, well, the fish was rough in texture and chewy, chips not like they used to be, chicken and mushroom pie was dry and tasteless, will not be buying from this place again £20.80 absolute waste of money

I worked in an award winning chippy way up North.Tonight I had haddock and chips from Bankers.They beat my old chippy hands down both in quality,taste and portions.

will never go there again terrable dervice went for a 1/4 chicken that did come with chips when i askd why i didnt get any i was told it only ever came with a 1/2 chicken and she had worked there for months i had got 1/4 and chips sevaral tims then anouther staff member sead it had only changed week ago then the chicken was mauled my anouther staff member so the staff lie and mistreat your food i will not be going back

Chips on one meal tasted stale. Very hit and miss with standard , never the same every time you visit.

Bought fish and chips and sausage and chips the chips were OK the Fish was horrible the batter was dry and chewy will not return.

Firstly, let me say that the chips are really tasty and not atvall oily. Having said that the portions are ridiculously small now. I paid £4.75 for a large which would previously been enough for 2 and a half portions. Now that is more like a regular. 2 of us were eating and there was barely enough chips. I knownthe 'cost of living crisis' has hit everything but come on, even during the war potato's weren't on ration. I'm getting a bit fed up with firms using it as an excuse to gouge the customer and reclaim money they lost during covid

I had a sausages in batter £2.95, you would expect prime meat content, there was hardly any meat at all it should of been called flour in batter, complete exploiting customers

Excellent service and a great meal with the food being very fresh and crispy. A member of staff even brought it out to my car.

I had a meal with my boyfriend at Bankers on the Sunday 24th July. We ordered cod and chips and mushy peas and pickled onions and the meal was delicious and hot and I think the best meal I have had there. I will definitely go back there again as we had such a nice meal.

Popped in for fish and chips, place was spotless, food pipping hot, fresh and not soaked in oil. Staff were friendly but polite. 5 stars from me

Literally the worst chip supper we’ve had. Multiple dishes missing from order, what did arrive was borderline raw. Out of the 4 people eating this food not 1 person managed more than a quarter of it before it found the bin. Only used this chippy because our regular was closed.

One of worst fish and chips I’ve had recently Chips were ok but the fish was poor. Batter was terrible and the fish had strange taste.

£11.35 for large cod and chips today! Fish was just ok, batter was dry! chips were hard, dry and tasteless! I think they have tried so hard to make it all healthy that they have taken away the enjoyment and flavour ! Won’t be returning!

Deliveroo delivery. Bankers is usually my favourite chip shop but the last couple of times they haven’t cooked the chips properly and they have been hard in the middle. Really disappointing. Has put me off ordering from them again.

Seemed like a nice place and supposed to have a good name went to the till saw chip and pin machine so a plus as most places won’t cash only never mind about Covid waited no one at till when gentlemen who was cooking fish...

We’ve just used the click’n’collect service at the Hove branch of Bankers and were so disappointed that the batter was clearly over cooked and the fish ruined.Also the mushy peas tasted of absolutely nothing, no seasoning at all and the chips were mediocre at best.It’s far too complicated to try and return a meal that you’ve had to order via an app and the turnaround time to replace it would have been an hour even if we could work out how.So, sorry Bankers but you won’t get any more of our money or any recommendations, see you soon Riddle & Finn.

As a vegan, I couldn't even have takeaway chips here as none of the food is cooked separately.A staff member told me that they definitely do cater for vegetarians because vegetarians eat fish!!Sadly, too many people who eat fish call themselves vegetarians. This only causes confusion. Vegetarians, by definition, definitely do not eat fish.Bankers do sell Linda McCartney scampi bites, which are vegan, but there's no point.Brighton is well known to be a veggie/vegan-friendly city. Long established local company, Bankers, should be responding to that by now.Most disappointing.

3 haddock and chips and 1 cod and chips for less than 30 quid. Great food and decent price. Onion vinegar as well. Hearty english grub

This evening I had or thought I was going to have a cheeseburger & chips.No one told me it takes 20mins to cook a burger when I placed my order.Unpacking it once I got home there was no cheese in my burger, to add insult to injuryit was not fully cooked right through. So it went out for the foxes.I've had a problem with incorrect orders & poorly cooked food before so had stayed away for some time. This time I will not be going back.

I have just had a very unsatisfactory meal from Bankers sadly. I had a piece of fish and the batter was more like a suit of armour than the light and crispy one I was hoping for. It snapped off much like a biscuit and it was almost inedible, luckily the fish was ok. Not the cheapest option and I was hoping for much better quality, don’t think I’ll be returning.

The atmosphere in the shop was very pleasant. We were served promptly and felt welcome. The quality of the fish was really good and the chips were incredible. We are definitely coming back.

Probably the best fish and chips I’ve had. Shared a large cod and chips with curry sauce and mushy peas. Was a very large portion and easily enough for us both. Everything was of a very high quality

I am so disappointed - Bankers Church rd, Hove......what happened? I am a weekly customer, I live so close to the restaurant but due to mobility issues I ordered a meal for delivery. Last night my order arrived fairly quickly but when I opened the 'box' of food I was horrified! Whoever was on chip cooking duty last night let me down, big time! I couldn't eat the chips. they couldn't have been cooked for more than a minute, seriously, how can you send out food cooked like that? I will be very wary about ordering again, such a shame, usually the food is good. Chips need to be a golden brown colour......not white!! Some cooking tips much needed, me thinks!

Great tasting, sustainably source fish. The service in the restaurant is always friendly and efficient and the food is alway excellent.

Just looking for some lunch when I noticed Bankers. Checking the menu I saw that they had a special Senior Citizen's Fish and Chips lunch with a drink for £5.95.

I think we must have just been unlucky because I can't imagine a business would last long serving the smallest portion of "medium cod" I've ever seen/had maybe because it was so dried up it had shrunk. Chewy, dry and tasteless along with the chips. Horrible mushy peas with little change from £40 for the four of us with sachets of tomato ketchup. A take away! Awful value, awful food.

I've regularly visited Bankers since they've opened and enjoy both takeaway and eating in. It's good, reliable fish and chips - there are also very tasty non traditional options, especially their Thai veggie burger.

This is good fish and chips fish are good and good portions. Not quite convinced by the mushy peas but saveloys are apparently the best.

A nice and clean chippy service as friendly and wait time as you would expect, I ordered the plaice and the portion sizes were very good. The fish was really oily which spoilt the taste, Good value for money

This week a friend asked to pick up a kids fish & chip meal for her son on my way home. Orders were continuous but never more than one person waiting to order at a time. I asked for a childs fish & chips and very pointed told by Phillip that they didn't do a childs fish & chips just what was on the board. Seeing Kids Meals on the boards I asked what that was? Phillips answer " They Kids Meals" so i picked Cod Fillet Strips.

Went to order on a Friday evening scampi and chips, understood the wait as a busy evening.

Stuck with the normal Veggy burger I was offered a vegetarian scampi with chips... it was delicious. To top it off, the service was fast and attentive... much better that many of the chip shops on the sea front...

This place only known to locals and not visitors serves best and authentic fish and chips. In business since 1923, as they say- they’re really best at it. The place to visit while in Brighton

Trying to order me and my family dinner and my order get's declined twice because they don't have the food in store, so now £60 has gone out of bank and a lot of wasted time. Very poor customer service won't be using them again.

We had a home delivery, which came quickly. The food was hot and in cardboard boxes with salt and vinegar. The portions were much too big for us! The fish was very nice but the chips were awful. The majority were marked and soggy so I discarded most of them It was £25, which is very expensive. They really do need to check their potato supplier. It’s a shame as I was looking forward to it.

Had a meal here, with complimentary share platter started (because of the hotel we stayed in). Food was excellent, freshly cooked and piping hot. Staff very friendly and helpful, can't recommend highly enough.

Took my parents here for a fish & chip supper. First time, I've been back in about 7 months. Whilst the food was good overall, albeit more expensive, the three of us commented on how discoloured at least a third of our chips were....black in places & clearly visible! So is this due to the time of year, or the fact that according to their menu, they use locally sourced potatoes? I've had a lot of fish & chips over the years and expect the chips to be well cooked & golden brown. This is the first chip shop I've eaten in, that served up black chips, so much so, that my Mum left half of her chips. The 3 stars is for quick service & tasty fish, but unfortunately the chip situation, mesns I won't be hurrying back soon. Very disappointing indeed.

Having had a few slight issues with this place before, we decided to give it another go. Bad idea !

Visited last week and was lovely. My family visit every week and have senior citizens meal £5.95. Whole chicken and chips. Massive portion I had and staff were friendly and place was very clean. If you love fish and chips it’s a must in hove.

Four of met here for an early supper our waitress was brilliant. She was lovely and we had a real giggle with her,especially when we ordered a kickerbocker glory! She really made our evening. The food was great can’t wait to go again next time we visit Brighton, it’s top of our list!

I have recently been using this Bankers most weeks on a Friday lunch time and always been fairly happy . However today I went in to find out the prices had gone up , but more surprisingly they have also cut down on there potion size . When I quired the portion Size all three members of staff joined forces in telling me off !!! They argued and denied then to admit that they had put up there prices and the box size had changed ! Funny that . The girl serving me through the savoly sausages and the two men said I should take it up with management , when I asked for contact details , the cook there admitted he was the manger . ... I have now seen other reviews online of the unprofessional Rude staff of Bankers Hangleton and I won’t be going back ,

The price that you pay for a fish and chips is ridiculous, better to buy fish and chips in one of the stands on the seafront, it tastes the same and is double cheaper. Also, I ask for a simple piece of bread and they charged me £2.50 for two slices of white bad quality bread! The place looks nice inside but I won't be coming back.

Food is always nice but shame about the staff can’t seem to get an order right, totally understand that they can get busy in there but to get home and find they have missed 4 items off your order is ridiculous, so there goes sitting down and eating as a family and having our complete meal, anyway tried to call 5 times and no answer so had the inconvenience of driving all the way back up there to be told sorry we are too busy to answer the phone!!! Surely 5 calls straight after another tells them that they may be useful to at least answer even if you do need to put the caller on hold. Waited another 15 mins for the order to be re done and while waiting. Someone else came In to say they were missing 2 portions of chips, also heard a girl in there saying how annoying that people had been moaning, not sure what they expect if people’s meals are wrong. The missing chips were disappointing not sure if this was because I complained but don’t think this qualifies as a portion of fresh chips

The staff need customer service training! Felt like they were doing me a favour last night.Yes it was busy but Phillip who served us was rude and grumpy,and also not a smile between the 3 of them serving! We talked to another lady there waiting and she said she couldn't believe how rude they were and wont be back as she thought she would try there for a change.People travel for miles to go to Wolfies in Hove and met with a smile,maybe we will travel too!

Took my father and his partner here and had a wonderful fish and chip supper, Definitely recommend to others. Very nice atmosphere, enjoyed all round

I have a mother in Las who suffers from dementia and sometimes she wants Fish and Chips, I doesn't matter when she wants it you can get fish and chips 7 days a week

Being Not from a local palate, the fish was a huge portion and tasted fresh and firm. Have tried a few sources and if asked to describe my representation of the classic British fish and chips ; this would be the place.Was recommended by a local resident around Hangleton the food here taste excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend this place to any visitors. Had a cod and haddock to sample. Both were great but my preference would be to stick to the good old Cod.

Wonderful fish and chips. Now seems to be a weekly event in our house. They not only do excellent fish and chips but also chicken , pies and burgers. Watch out for the offers they have, Different days have different offers. My mum loves the lunchtime special as well. She comes from Yorkshire and say these are the best Fish and Chips she has had down south! High praise indeed from someone who was brought up in a fishing town , where the fish from cobbles caught that day would be in the Chip Shop that night.

These chips are 100% the best in Brighton! Would happily drive across the city for these. They do great curry sauce and battered sausages too!!

Being directly next to the sea and being in Britain then we should do amazing fish and chips in Brighton and this place certainly does. The best I’ve had by a country mile. Love that it has a dine in section so you can eat it at its very best, fresh from the fryer. Will be back time and time again

On the occasion that we have fish & chips We always use Bankers. We live in Hangleton & would drive down to Church Road in Hove for fish & chips, so when Bankers opened in Hangleton it was great. But the last 2 times we have used it has not been a good experience. The Huss looked “old” & dry & the chips had a couple that were not cooked properly & definitely different types of potato used.

Food was ok, was not hot enough and we ordered 1 mushy peas and 1 curry sauce but got 2 curry sauces. We will try it again but if it's not hot, probably wont have it again.

Been going to the original Bankers for years, quality of new shop just a good. Consistently good throughout the years, usually id think it a crime to order nuggets in a fish and chip shop but Banker's are delicious and unlike any ive had before. Almost a nugget/ chinese chicken ball hybrid but the best of both!

Bankers has been around quite a while now & based on some of the reviews I’ve always been lucky & had a decent meal here.

The fish and chips at Bankers are without equal. The service is always excellent and the food absolutely amazing.

I was fed up with Christmas food and was in the area post Christmas so thought I would have a chippy lunch. I had takeaway P ie and large Chips

We've visited many times now as the chips do taste good, we have however learnt not to order 'large' chips as they are more often then not the same size as regular chips.

Visited again for the 3rd time and was very disappointed. The fish and chips were luke warm when we sat down to eat them and we only live 2 minutes away by car. Hope the standard improves if we decide to go back.

We decided to have our first visit to Bankers rather than travel to our favourite Fish and Chip shop, Bardsley's in Brighton. It was a cold, windy night and the staff insisted on having the front door wide open as they were hot behind the counter...... we were all freezing cold. After ordering, we took our seats and had to keep our coats on to eat. Disappointed to be told no baked beans; no Coca-Cola only Pepsi; mayonnaise was 30p a sachet; and the music in the flat above boomed through the ceiling for the whole time we were there. When they did shut the door, the extraction fan was useless and the whole restaurant filled with a smoky fried fish oil smell. The positive was the fish was good and of a good size but the chips weren't great. Back to Bardsley's for us, especially as we can have a glass of wine with our meal.

Friendly staff, who double checked my order before giving it to me (see a previous review, and offered salt and vinegar). The fish was cooked whilst I waited so freshly cooked and really good cod. The chips were really good too, great flavour and not soggy. Please read right to the end of this review ... Initially when I opened the box when I got home my first impression was that the fish looked over cooked and greasy and there weren’t many chip. HOWEVER, having placed the fish on a paper towel there was very little oil so maybe just some in the box from when it was put there. The darker colour may have been due to the matzo? ..... anyway it was perfectly cooked and not over cooked at all. As I took out the chips, there was actually a more than decent portion, it was just the size of the box that had made it look like not much.

What with it being a Saturday night,we decided to have a takeaway.

Had a haddock and chips. Chips were very good, but the fish was only average and the mushy peas were poor. Staff were very professional and friendly. Not as good as my first visit.

Since this restaurant opened sadly it has not maintained its original high standard the chips in particular have slumped to soft and soggy

Poped into Bankers for a cod and chips takeaway at about 7pm monday night. Shop was empty apart from one person eating at a table. Ordered cod and chips and was served straight away. I commented that the fish was rather small but was told that was as it was. Server only just about managed to scrape enough chips out of the heated cabinet. Sadly the chips had been in there far too long and were overcrisped and in some cases just hard and the fish was stale in terms of cooked some time before. All in all very disappointing. Must remember Monday is not a good evening to visit Bankers

Had a take away, 6.15pm Saturday. The premises are bright and clean looking and it was busy. Large cod, salt and pepper squid and one regular portion of chips to share. We live a 5 minute drive away so popped it in a hot oven when we got back for 2 minutes. The cod batter stuck to the paper which was a shame but it was well cooked. The squid were a bit salty for my liking (I don't each much salt) but they were very tasty and the texture was good and my wife enjoyed them. The chips were good, quite dry but we prefer non-soggy chips. £13.10 in total. Next time we'd probably go for the larger portion of chips to share but for one person the regular portion would be pretty big. We enjoyed it and would go back for a take away.

Never had a bad Friday at Bankers glad they now have opened at Hangleton should do well,but I also love the little Chinese fish and chip shop at hangleton very reasonably and lovely fresh fish and chip.

The food is excellent....but the poor staff were simultaneously taking orders form the restaurant and for takeaways, waiting on tables in the restaurant, packaging up the food and taking money. There are too few tills, and there was a long queue up the road for food on a midday evening. There are many good fish and chips restaurants in the area - their food may not be as good, but Bankers will lose custom to them if they don't get their act together!

Lovely cod, teriible chips because they weren't cooked long enough and very pricey compared to the other two local chippies i wouldn't pay 7 quid for a large cod on its own and also 55p for a pickled onion?! The battered sausage was ok but again 2 quid is double what the one around the corner from me charges. Also at no point did they ask if we wanted salt and vinegar so had to unpack it all and add it at the end... probably be an idea to ask when they take your order and add it on the ticket for whoever is preparing it

Live right near Hangleton Bankers. Never get a take away from there.

Finally decent take aways in the area and also has a small seating area. Food was delicious. Staff very young and learning but polite and service was quite quick. Good value for good food.

I'm submitting this on behalf of an elderly relative, who today purchased a take away Fish & Chip lunch, or so she thought. Having got home only to find they had fish but no chips. As a pensioner she rang and complained for her having paid for Fish & Chips but to only have fish made it expensive! and of course not a full meal. Whilst full of apologies they were asked if they could come back to the restaurant - no it is too far and uphill. A short time later Wayne the Ops Manager of this branch rang back to offer to bring out a full replacement meal. Sadly with the fish having been eaten they did not
