We had a wonderful two night stay at Bagdale Hall, lovely bedroom with a four poster bed, the room was spacious and had a lovely bathroom, the Hall is only 5 mins walk to Whitby town so could leave the car in their car park behind the hotel, staff very pleasent and helpful with a few ghost stories thrown in, unfortunately never saw any ghosts because the bed was so comfy we slept through the night, breakfast included and was delicious, loved every minute of our stay at this unique hotel

This hotel is situated on a busy road into whitby. We have stayed here several times in the past Top tip stay in the main hall if possible well worth the extra .Rooms are immaculate and a warm welcome awaits from hosts Allison and Mike .Breakfast is vast and delicious . Only downside was the payment card machine was not working and they would not take cheque or bank transfer therefore cash transaction only . A small price to pay to stay in such a lovely place. We dinnedout at The Edge on friday they serve the best steaks in whitby and saturday at Passage to India very lively place with vast menu and excellent service .For best views of whitby climb the 199 steps also lifeboat museum is well worth a visit

A lovely stay at the Hotel. A nice piece of history and atmosphere. Bar, Dining room, Lounge area fab. The fire places.......wow, can imagine them in full use when it was a home days gone by. Parking is very limited to approximately 9 spaces, so be prepared to have to find alternative parking. The only fault to find, and the only......A little more care needed on the House Keeping side of things in rooms. Thick dust on surfaces.(window ledges, top of light fittings etc) shower cubicle surrounds need a deep clean. However. these things did not spoil our stay and we will definately return at some point in time.

If you're looking for great service, rooms bigger than your house and a stay steeped in history, then Bagdale Hall is a must. Both our rooms had a large seating area and four poster bed with beautiful beams and huge gothic fireplaces. The staff were absolutely superb - very friendly and really couldn't do enough to make our stay perfect. The breakfast was delicious, it's right in the centre of Whitby so everything is walking distance and the building is stunning. We'd definitely go back.

This is the restaurant in Bagdale Hall hotel. We had breakfast here during our stay at the hotel. The dining room has lovely period décor and a giant fireplace with interesting history. Window tables look out onto a tasteful statue / water feature. The breakfast is really nice, all freshly cooked to order. I'm not sure if they open for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner - hotel could advise. We really enjoyed our breakfasts here. I must add that the staff are really friendly too and will be able to tell you all about this lovely Victorian building.

We actually stayed in the annex just up the road called Lobster Hall which is an old converted school. Car parking for free was a real bonus but limited so get there early. Helpful receptionist, clean large room. The only issue we had was that the room was near the main door and at the bottom of the stairs which meant it was a bit noisy in the early hours when people were coming back late with the door banging and noise on the stairs. I would definitely stay again but would go for a first floor room

We stayed here for a short break in a family room. I rang before arrival regarding parking and the man who answered was really professional and helpful, there was ample close parking which is valuable in Whitby, the room was pleasant and comfortable, it appeared really clean but we did find a pair of gloves under the bed so perhaps the hoovering could be a bit more thorough, breakfast was lovely, the main building has a unique charm given it’s age and history, you couldn’t really pick a better location

Having overdosed on fish and chips, we decided to visit Bagdale Hall for a more sophisticated meal. There was a four or five course menu offered, so we decided to opt for the four courses, but weren't asked by the staff what we wanted. We chose starter, main and dessert, with amuse bouche and sorbet, and declined the cheese, assuming that was the fifth course. However, when the bill arrived, it was for five courses so we queried it, to be told that the amuse bouche and sorbet were the fourth and fifth courses. I have never encountered this type of charging before and was a little miffed. However, the food was absolutely delicious and still pretty good value for £30 per head.

After having trouble finding somewhere with a table on a busy Easter weekend, we managed to book a table at the hotel restaurant (we had previously stayed here before so knew of its existence). We had an aperitif in the bar while perusing the menu and the friendly barman took our order then called us to sit down shortly before the amuse bouche was served. Food was good and service was friendly. On the pricier side of average but probably what you would expect at a large hotel.

To be clear, we never actually got to eat here. Here's why. Our guest house recommended the restaurant and as it was my birthday we thought we'd try somewhere nice. There was a menu outside which said you could have a three course meal on Tuesdays and Fridays for 18 pounds and the food sounded good, so we booked for that Friday evening. On arrival (after standing at reception for a few minutes and being completely ignored by staff) we noticed the menu and the deal had been taken down. We asked the waitress when at our table. She said they didn't have all the food on that deal but would check what they did have. While she was gone we heard a male waiter say that the food he was holding was for 'the old couple in the corner'. I think that was very rude. Our waitress returned and told us what food remained available on the three course deal. When I commented on the goats cheese not being available ( leaving mainly fish dishes that I'm allergic to) she said the cheese was cooked in the same batter as the fish anyway. Eh?!! We left. We took away the impression that the restaurant was unprofessional and misleading.

We ate here on our last night in Whitby, on the recommendation of our guest house. The service was friendly, efficient and helpful. We had scallops and deep fried goat's cheese as starters, followed by mussels in white wine, garlic and cream for my husband. I had sea bass. Desserts were cheese selection and ice cream. Accompanied by a bottle of house white wine. Food was delicious, hot, well presented, portions generous. Selection of Yorkshire cheeses with apple, celery, biscuits and almonds would easily serve two. Only critiscm I thought pan seared sea bass was a little over cooked. A couple on the other side of the restaurant were celebrating their wedding anniversary (congratulations to you both) and generously shared their celebration cake with us. Thank you.

We went here Saturday night when we were on a weekend break, the staff are very friendly and helpful if not a little over worked. We had a drink in a small and intimate bar whilst browsing the menu, my starter was meant to be prawn and crab salad! There wasn't any crab and the prawns were tasteless in a bland mayo, my husbands starter was tiger prawns in chilli sauce, it was in fact prawns floating in a dish of Luke warm butter. Main courses weren't much better, my mushroom risotto was a bit like porridge in mushroom soup! To top our disappointing meal, the tables were being turned around for breakfast around us at 9.30. It felt like a school canteen with hotel prices . It's a big shame because the building has great character and much history, but the food and lack of class let's it down.

After enjoying several morning coffees and an anniversary dinner here we took the plunge and booked a two nights for the price of one break. Not at all disappointed.Room 1 was very comfortable, with every appointment needed. The room is huge, with 4 poster bed, settee and armchair. There is a huge fireplace, not in use anymore, a desk and even a whole table for tea and coffee supplies. There was also hot chocolate, water and biscuits supplied.Plenty of power sockets to charge phones etc.Wifi was adequate rather than good. However I was aware of a presence in the room, n my husband was asleep in bed.The second night the TV switched itself on at 130 in the morning. It was on a different channel and a different volume to where we had left it.Meant my husband had a fitful nights sleep.Although the Hotel is in a building more than 500 years old it is very nicely appointed indeed. There is free parking a few yards away. A little tight, and it must get full at times.Such a good location, easy level walking to the station, buses and plenty of shops and restaurants, even in January.

Stayed here for a couple of days, thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of the owners who immediately make you feel right at home. The restaurant is great, fabulous food, but does have a bit of a dentists waiting room atmosphere when it's quiet. The access to the hotel could be an issue for some less mobile users, as the entrance to Reception is on a busy side road and the Car Park is up the hill away from the Hotel. Suitcases have to be lugged down 50 metres to the hotel and it's so busy, you couldn't park in the side street for longer then 30 seconds.

The Bagdale Hotel, well what can I say? Not anything bad that’s for sure, we arrived early on the Friday on a Goth weekend so parked our car in their car park and popped in to just let them know we had arrived. We were told we were in a certain room however another room on the next floor down was available so if we wanted to change we could, the receptionist Alison suggest that we have a look at both rooms then pop back and tell her our decision, so we did and opted for the alternative room. The room was located in the annex next door but don’t be put off the room was very pleasant with four poster bed (yes anyone reading my other posts on other hotels would see I’m not a fan of 4 poster beds) but this was not over powering in the room and we had adequate room to move around it as the room was large and spacious with a large bathroom complete with bath and a shower over it if required.I must say I have stayed at plenty of hotels over recent years but the staff here must have been the most pleasant I have come across (not that I’ve come across many with unpleasant staff) but everyone just seemed to want to go that extra mile to make our stay pleasant. A special thanks must be given to Alison who any request wasn’t too much (and believe me my partner does have some strange requests at times). The restaurant and bars are both pleasant as were the other guests when on a Saturday evening after dinner we ended up having several drinks and laugh and joke to the end of the evening. The hotel is well located within easy walking distance of Whitby town centre and the pubs and restaurants there. All in all we had a very enjoyable weekend, Thank you all at the Bagdale Hall

Having dined at Bagdale on Christmas Day 2015 and been very happy with the food I couldn't believe the difference...I visited with 2 friends who had travelled from East Midlands and expected on the Tour de Yorkshire day/bank holiday weekend a packed restaurant but at 1:30 pm there were only 2 other diners. One friend is vegetarian the other gluten free. On the phone I was told that they could construct a roast dinner around the gluten free aspect. One of us had a small bowl of Tomato and Basil soup - cost £6. Other two had the trio of Goats Cheese which was both nice and well presented, I think was £9 each. For main course, the vegetarian friend chose the Goats Cheese, charged at £16 for a few more bits on the plate than the starter. The roast dinner was comparatively reasonably priced at £12 and two of us opted for a combination of beef and pork. The pork was the thickness of a pork chop served with soft Yorkshire pudding, barely cooked broccoli, carrots, mashed potato and roast potatoes that were so tough and leathery they could barely be cut or chewed. The potatoes had the texture of having been reheated possibly several times and guessing cooked on a previous day or so.The gluten free construct turned out for the main course to be leaving out the Yorkshire pudding and gravy. At the start of the main course we were asked if everything ok, at that point as had only just started eating only mentioned how terrible the roast potatoes were. The lady serving us said oh dear, she would go and tell the chef. We never saw her again! My friends chose a sweet, again priced about £8/£9 eah. We thought the portions were miniscule e.g. the pannacotta came as 2 small circles about 3cms in diameter. We had a bottle of Prosecco (as we were celebrating 3 birthdays) plus 3 soft drinks. The bill came to just over £106. Not somewhere I will be returning. I am ashamed that my friends drove a 300 mile round trip for that.

A group of us ate here on December 10th. Starters ok, main course variable: lovely thick slices of turkey, delicious sausage wrapped in bacon, but then - stuffing ball and roast potatoes dry and the vegetables arrived half-way through eating the main course. If 'al dente' means raw then the cauliflower was thus, together with ok carrots. Christmas pudding good. Staff were very friendly and helpful, the dining room is beautiful, but £19.95 for quite an average meal was excessive. Had a pub Christmas lunch next day for half the price and it was far better.

We arrived today for a two night stay. We had to amend our original booking date due to hospital appointment for an operation & we received an upgrade which was a kind gesture from the hotel. We have paid £ 280 for b&b for two nights which we consider expensive for Sunday & Monday nights in Whitby in October. However, our room is very nice with feature four poster bed & nicely appointed bathroom. Our big disappointment is that the restaurant is closed both nights of our stay & we were not advised of this. We now have to find somewhere to eat. We don't really enjoy fish & chips which are readily available in Whitby. The lady on reception suggested some alternatives which we shall try. She has been very courteous & helpful & doing a very professional job. I asked if there was a Duty Manager to discuss our concerns with & she advised me there was no one available. I trust we shall be contacted by the Duty Manager but the planned birthday celebration is somewhat disappointing as we have to eat out & have paid what we consider a high price for our stay.

The staff were great, the building was beautiful inside and out, and the food was wonderful! We had a mackerel starter and pigeon breast on pea and black pudding risotto, and were very impressed. I had rhubarb three ways for dessert (a nice taste of summer on an October evening) and my husband had an excellent cup of coffee. We were impressed and will gladly visit again.

Finally tried this place for my husbands birthday. The building is beautiful, amazing interior and huge fireplaces, very cosy and warm on a cold winters night. The staff were very good, we didn't feel rushed at all. The food was lovely and not overly expensive. Look forward to going again.

I took my mother to Bagdale Hall restaurant for dinner to celebrate her birthday weekend last night. I cannot praise this restaurant enough. The historic building is stunning and sympathetically decorated. The dining rooms are cosy, private, and atmospheric. We enjoyed a bottle of champagne and an excellent 3-course meal and I still got change from £100, which, in my books, is brilliant value. The seafood cocktail starters were tasty and plentiful. The mushroom and truffle risotto, which I ordered as a main course, was particularly delicious, and my mother was equally happy with her beef dish. Our cheese board was also varied and tasty. We got the impression that the table we had been given was ours for the evening, and the lovely waiting staff could not have been kinder or more attentive. Having been upset by the rushed, rude, and unprofessional service we'd received at another -- bafflingly highly-rated -- Whitby restaurant (and piano bar!) on the harbour-front the previous night, Bagdale Hall was an absolute breath of fresh air. In a culture where staff are increasingly encouraged to herd diners in and out as quickly as possible, and to make as much money as they can, with little care for the quality of their customers' experience, I am grateful that restaurants like Bagdale Hall still exist. Thank you to the fabulous staff for such a special night. Along with Ditto, this is now my favourite place to dine in Whitby. I will be back, and I would urge all visitors to Whitby to try a meal here, give honest feedback, and move this lovely place up the Tripadvisor ranking. It deserves a *much* higher rank than it currently has.

A lovely old building, good service & food much better than one would expect in a hotel. The big plus is parking - a real problem in Whitby now.

I styed here this week for 1 night with my husband. The receptionist was helpful . We were given room 15 which was an annex room. When we went into our room we were horrified to discover dirty floor towels & cleaning equipment still in our room. We phoned reception to let them know and they removed the items. In the bathroom there were dead flies on the floor and the towel rail was thik with dust. The cups which were provided to make tea in were filthy so we had to change them for clean ones at reception. Breakfast was basic and lacking any fresh fruit and there were no pastries, ham/cheese etc. we would not recommend to stay here. We made reception aware of faults but they still asked if we had any problems when we were making payment and leaving. We were just glad to be out of there. There are lots of other lovely hotels close by but unfortunately they were fully booked!

We had dinner here on the Sunday of August Bank Holiday weekend. Having read some lukewarm reviews on here we weren't going to go, but our B&B hosts said there was a new chef and recommended it. I'm very glad they did.As soon as I saw how the menu had been put together I knew I was going to love the food (you can see it on the restaurant's website). For starters we had a lightly spiced vegetable soup and a pate - both delicious, and beautifully but not fussily presented. For mains we both had pork belly which was OMG fantastic. The portion sizes were just right erring on the side of generosity, none of that nouvelle cuisine malarkey with two asparagus spears and a drizzle of balsamic in the middle of a huge white plate. We couldn't manage desserts, so just sat there grinning happily and finishing our wine. I liked the wine list very much: there were a couple of types each of red, white and rose wines all at £16 and then the usual more expensive stuff. We were umming and aahing over which white to have, so the waitress brought us a glass of each on the house to try. Nice touch.I can't fault the service, it was just right and pleasantly informal and friendly. The bill came to about £70 and I would gladly have paid half as much again for food of this quality.I wish the whole staff team every success, they deserve it, and hey Chef, take a bow :-)

A excellent hotel, very friendly staff. The breakfast was very good. The deals of 2 nights stay for the price of one, in November until March is well worth it! The hotel is a few minutes walk to the centre of whitby John & Karen Doncaster

First this is a review of the Hotel and Breakfast NOT a review of an evening meal at the restaurant. The room was in the Bagdale Annex around the back, and was a very nice comfortable room. Spacious and well presented. The main hotel and dining room looked amazing with its old school furnishings and decorations. The accompanying breakfast was excellent, a decent selection to choose from both hot and cold. Hot food is made to order and the full english was spot on.The staff are very friendly and do an excellent job.On a side note we chose this hotel for it's location to the Cinder track, which is just up the road. The hotel allowed us to store our bicycles in the garage overnight which made it an ideal choice.

The hotel is spotlessly clean, full of character and a wonderful experience. We had a lovely, very spacious, room with a four poster bed (not our cup of tea but it certainly went with the character of this 16thC location) of a standard size - we would have happily dispensed with the four poster for a king, or even a super king, bed. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The dinner was good and the breakfast was 'up to scratch'.

My wife and I decided to give Bagdale Hall restaurant another chance after reading the improve reviews on Tripadvisor. It had been 4 years since our last visit and we had been regulars to this restaurant. The setting of this historic place is second to none we have tried in Whitby and we have tried almost all the restaurants. Steeped in history sets a fantastic scene. The service was very good but to be fair there were only 6 other guests at 8pm on a weekend evening which gave me a insight on what was to come. Our starters of prawn cocktails had had excellent recent Tripadvisor reviews were soon on our table and we thanked our waitress. If you could imagine a 1970's version but assembled with boxing gloves on you would be just about there. The taste was no more impressive as it consisted of bland prawns, pea purée (`very little of this) decent smoked salmon and heaps of Iceberg lettuce. Our main was chicken for my wife and sirloin for me. The chicken was dry and tasteless and my £21 steak which I asked for rare was medium and about 1/2 inch thick. Not what we expected. The waitress looked embarrassed when she asked how our mains were. Not wanting to cause a scene I just said ok. I did not want to ask for another rare steak as I have never had a sirloin so thin so a replacement seemed pointless. The garnish served with our mains was dreadful. Large chunks of lettuce heart and awful dressing. Balsamic tomatoes cold and undercookedOur bill was £85 in total of which £5 was for a waitress tip and £80 for food and drink. The bill should have been £5 for food.Avoid this place like the plaque if your quality of food is important when paying for top end dining in Whitby. On telling our hotelier about our experience he said all the locals avoid Bagdale for the same reasons.Bagdale, change your chef and keep the rest.

One of ten restaurants we visited during our stay in Sleights, We, six of us, went there last year and enjoyed the food and atmosphere but this time we were all slightly disappointed. The surroundings are pleasant enough but there was nothing special about the food. An average restaurant.

This is very much a hotel restaurant. The menu was ok, and the service was lovely. It is a fine historic room. The wine list is particularly good value. We had an excellent well priced Pinot Noir. I would not say this is a destination restaurant, though the chef seems to be trying.

Our B'n'b recommended this restaurant which is just a few minutes walk away.We didn't have to book, got a nice table by the windows. Delicious mussels to start, followed by excellent pork belly, cooked to perfection. When paying the bill we were told since it was Wednesday there was a discount - result! The following night we went back and had good old fish and chips - so big we couldn't consider pudding. Again, the meal was delicious. Service was very friendly too!

We went here last week as part of a week's stay at Whitby. We had our wedding reception here back in 2003 and it was great to revisit. The staff running the show were really friendly, chatty and enthusiastic and the place hasn't changed a bit (Which we liked). It was steak night (Thurs) when we visited and we had two steaks and a bottle of wine for a steal. Top quality steak too and i'm not even that keen on steak! Would recommend.

After much research this looked the best hotel/restaurant and we certainly weren't disappointed, only wish we had gone before our last night. Staff, surroundings and food were all top class, and considering this was a Sunday evening this was even better, as commonly Sunday service can be a little less 'special' in other venues. No hesitation in recommending for a quality romantic meal within a reasonable budget.

What a fabulous choice we made dining at this wonderful restaurant.the atmosphere was perfect for our 40th birthday party. The staff welcomed us in and took us to our pre booked table, they gave us menus and left us to choose the dishes of our choice,no pressure and no one rushing us.The staff was all pleasant and helpful and happy to answer any questions asked. The food was cooked and served to a high standard and we was given ample time between courses to allow our food to digest. We were very happy at the reasonable prices both for the food and wine.We would return and eat again at this unique place.

Excellent food and great value for money based on the quality of taste and presentation. £47 for a family of 2.5 with soft drinks and 3 courses (child shared our main but had own ice cream pudding). The goats cheese starter was excellent and we had 1 pork and one beef roast main coarse - superb meat from quality local butchers and ample portion of veg and juicy gravy. Pudding was excellent with our choices of white choc panna cotta with strawberries and sticky toffee pudding both superb. Staff very accommodating and very old style building dating from 1500's really adding to ambience. All in all a great choice and made our little one feel very special.

It has been quite a while since our last meal at Bagdale Old Hall. We all had an excellent meal! The sirloin steaks on the 'special' menu were 'special' Very tender & tasty! The sea bass fillets were also excellent. The only improvement we could make with the maim course would be chunky chips but that is a personal preference! An ancient building that has retained a lot of its charm! The desserts we had were also very good.

You certainly have to wear a shirt and dress for this place. Beautiful place with a grand dining room like something out of Downton Abbey. I had chicken liver parfait for the first time and will certainly be ordering it again. We both had pork belly mains but Gemma wasn't a fan of the mash, bit too appley. Not knocking the food, the quality was amazing and all locally sourced which was a nice touch. At the time it was the best cheesecake I'd ever had and I love my cheesecake. All round nice evening and would recommend for posh or romantic dos.

We were staying in Whitby over the bank holiday weekend and based on TA reviews decided to book this restaurant. We were a party of six and dined at 6pm. We were the first party in the restaurant, but, as time went on it got very busy, however, we didn't feel rushed and we still received excellent service from the waiting staff despite the restaurant being full.We had chicken liver pate, and salmon and prawn cocktail to start, this was accompanied with what we presumed was warm homemade bread rolls which we all had.Our mains were fish and chips, steak, pork belly, chicken and sea bass, all food served piping hot and well presented. Not all our party had room for desserts, but those that did had the cheese and biscuit selection. We wouldn't hesitate to return again.

My husband and i dined here one evening after seeing great reviews on fb and heard they had a new chef. We had 3 courses, i had the sea bass as a main which was served with mussels and queen scallops which just melted in the mouth. Dave had the steak which he said was thd best he'd ever had. We both a mouth watering desserts which were fit for the queen, over all a 5* meal at a reasonable price. The staff were lovely really friendly and pleasent to chat too. We will definitely be making a return visit.

Four of us had a wonderful meal on a Saturday evening when a large party was also in the resturant . I need not have worried as from the moment we walked through the door we were treated to the ultimate in service. Friendly , bright , well trained staff looked after us. These girls managed to wait on large party and look after us impeccably. The menu was just the right amount of choice and boy, it was delicious. We all enjoyed everything . It was a rare occasion where we felt relaxed and had received exceptional service and food. Thank you. I will certainly be recommending Bagdale to my business customers.

nice place to stay although the lodge is noisy when the sea gulls are perched on the roof all night , the room itself was very accommodating nice clean bedding good size bed and well stocked had drinks tray, good power shower, trouser press. The location allowed us to park the bike right up to the building but there is ample safe parking around the rear of the hall . Breakfast was especially good and the staff were great and very cheerful. The weather was dreadful and really pouring down but the staff were waiting in reception to welcome all the guests coming from the lodge ready to take our wet coats and seat us for breakfast. alla in all a very good place to stay ...apart from those pesky seagulls

My son has a dairy allergy and often has to settle for sorbet when at an ice cream parlour. Truly Scrumptious gave him an amazing choice of dairy free ice creams and toppings. We wouldn’t normally have 3 ice creams in 3 days but he was just so excited that he had choices, how could we not??!!

Food was ok. Price was a little steep. Service was nothing to write home about. BUT what was really annoying, after paying by card and leaving, was being chased down on a busy pavement by a member of staff saying the payment didn't go through - tried again and again, then another card and the another card with the staff member carrying the payment machine saying all declined when none of them should have failed ! Because golden grid has been established for such a long time you'd have thought they would have sorted this problem out but apparently not ! it's not like it would cost them much to get better devices with better reception but no they can't be bothered. SO be prepared to be chased down and embarrassed.

We had a lovely lunch with family today, enjoying the view from above and the sunshine. However, when my food was being served, the sizzling from the oil in it landed on my husband's coat. When we asked for the bill, I explained the situation to the lady, who by the way was the person who served us the food, and she barely apologized. I would expect a better handling of the situation...
