Lovely food, lovely people, especially the owner who came and chatted for a while. It's a small pub but it was recommend by the receptionist at the chain hotel we were staying at a couple of miles away.

We have eaten here many times as we live in the local area. The owners are extremely welcoming and friendly, they make you feel like family. Very accommodating, nothing is too much trouble. We had dinner with our baby and toddler and they provided colouring activities, even toddler cutlery! The food is fantastic, large portions, superb quality. All sat next to a lovely fireplace- it has a very cosy feel. Thank you very much!

Absolutely loved this place . We used it as a Brit stop. We parked our Motorhome on the grassy car park overlooking the gorgeous rapeseed field. Super friendly owner and staff and relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed their fab steak and ale pie. Although on the main road, it went pretty quiet after 11.00 until 6.30. Good for a free night. Would highly recommend.

We have passed a few times but to be honest it was the Wednesday lunch deal of two courses for £10.95 that pulled us in. What a gastronomic surprise my wife having the roast of the day and enjoying the full works. I went off piste and tried the curry of the day which was one of the best I had ever had in a pub type venue. After a delicious home made pate and relish for starters the syrup sponge and custard was an indulgence not needed as my tummy was full but I couldn’t resist. And it was worth it! Lovely friendly service and the chef is a hidden diamond. We will become regular visitors.

I am genuinely shocked by the amount of favourable reviews for this dated and dirty excuse for a pub. Needs a throrough deep clean, especially the dog hair-matted carpet. The Sunday Lunch consists of three options, which is usually a good sign as it means the kitchen is able to concentrate on perfecting the dishes. Not the case here. The Roast beef was not just well-done, it was more like a congratulations, being so overdone. The Roast Potatoes seemed a few days old and had been reheated; spongy, chewy and tasteless. The whole plate was inedible and those also on the table were unable to finish. A Salmon Ceaser was on offer, which again too was not good. The Salmon used was frozen salmon, and this too was inedible. Granted we had a large table but the service was slow and ponderous, and although they dealt with our complaints about the food admirably, not once were we approached whilst eating to see if everything was ok or if we'd like another drink. All in all a huge dissapointed. Visit at your peril.

Really lovely home cooked roast. Best Yorkshire pudding I’ve had for awhile. Nothing messed around with. Lovely melt in the mouth topside (I normally like my beef rare which this wasn’t. It had been slow cooked beautifully). Fresh veg. Would have liked the roast potatoes a bit crispier but that is minor in what was a good plate of food. As for dessert we shared the toffee sundae. I won’t be sharing again as it’s too good to share. Icing on the cake they’re dog friendly too.

Lovely little pub with welcoming hosts. Visited the Axe and Cleaver for an evening meal on our first day in the area. Although on a main route through the county the pub was quiet when we arrived. I imagine more of a pub for locals but getting busier during the holiday season. The food menu had a wide range and was of very good quality. Nice range of beers available. Prices reasonable for the quality. The hosts were very welcoming and polite. The landlady even offered us a lift back to the hotel we were staying at after we mentioned that we had walked to get there (only a mile). A nice touch but declined as we needed to walk off the food and drink. Great pub and well worth seeking out.

The Axe and Cleaver is a great traditional English Country Pub, with friendly owners, good beer and excellent traditional pub fare. Its popularity is a reflection of the fact that it fulfils its chosen niche so well. In an age of pub chains and gastro pubs, it's refreshing to find a pub run by a couple that care about doing things in what maybe seen by some as the old fashion way. The pubs decor and atmosphere is what you would expect of a well run country local and this only adds to its charm.

So my wife and I pulled in here on our way home from south wales. The car park was full so we assumed it most be quite a popular place to visit. As we walked inside we could see there was many people already seated and we asked if they could squeeze us a table for 2 which they did. As we sat down I asked for a menu as there wasn't one on the table but to my disappointment there was no menu as it was only a £12.95 2 course meal on offer. Roast Lamb, Beef or Pork. Not that I don't like a Sunday roast, I just prefer more variety in choice. We both chose the roast beef. It arrived at the table after a reasonable 20 minute wait or so accompanied by a side bowl of vegetables.. peas, carrots and sprouts. The Yorkshire pudding was overdone and had that burnt taste to it and the beef was really tough and hard to chew. I thought maybe I had a bad serving but my confirmed hers was exactly the same. I chose the apple crumble with custard for afters. Again I was heartbroken, the apple was almost tasteless and bland and it seemed as if not any sugar had been used in making the crumble at all. We both felt really deflated. Such a shame because the staff were really warm and welcoming and it a lovely atmosphere. I'd love to go back if i'm by chance ever passing again and give it a second try. Atmosphere and staff get top marks, food unfortunately does not i'm afraid. Better luck next time. Check it out.

The main meal was the size of a child’s meal. On a closing note to the management please clean the carpets I’m sure the carpets should be green with a feature of cream.

Simple pub by the side of the road. The landlord/staff were very friendly and helpful which is sadly not always the case these days. The menu is decent and what we ordered was excellent. So nice to go to a pub and come out happy and satisfied: good job!

Called in here on a Sunday lunchtime. They only serve roast dinner on a Sunday, but it was absolutely delicious and plenty of it. Will certainly call in here again when I’m next in that part of the country.

We called in to the Axe & Cleaver for lunch on the Monday of a short break staying at the Pilgrim Hotel, and what a welcome you will not find a more friendly and helpful landlord in the whole of Hereford. All the staff are so welcoming and helpful. The food is fantastic.

We were brought by friends we met whole staying nearby. I can see why they recommended it so highly. Delicious food, friendly staff and a lovely old building too.

Stopped here midweek and it has a nice car park. It is an old country pub but don’t let that put you off.

We had joined with a bunch of people for a group meal and as such we excted delays and food not coming out together. But not only did they serve ebveryone in good time but all meals were hot served together and fabulous food. Definitely recommend.

Called on the off chance of booking dinner. The restaurant was full but Manager was charming and found us a table. Food - pate, fish and meat dishes were all excellent. Desserts worth finding a space for - as they were both substantial and very good.

Beautiful scenic spot, absolutely stunning. Dog friendly. Food was amazing and atmosphere good too. Boat was running as water was too high but didn’t matter to us!

Only went in for a Latte - great flavour/strength. I have to write 100 characters but only went in for a coffee!

Rude, extremely disappointing, shocking and disrespectful staff! We arrived after making a booking the day before. I booked 2 Adults, 1 child aged 2. The booking itself was pleasant. We got slightly lost, rang in and again very pleasant. Arrived 7 minutes late and walked into a very ‘local’ pub feel. All eyes on us. We were told by the bar person that they were glad we found them. A woman appeared and looked at my Grandson and commented ‘we don’t have highchairs’ I commented that I’d booked ahead with a child on the booking? She said she would go down in the cellar and dust something suitable to bring up then asked me if I had a chair in my car???!!!! We approached the bar and I said I was confused as I’d booked a child ahead of coming. I was ignored, I said once again and the younger woman behind the bar looked at me and in a slightly raised voice utttered ‘well, yes she’s gone to get you something hasn’t she!!’ Based on this experience I told my Friend we were leaving as being treated like this was way beyond acceptable. I wasn’t happy and I let it be known! My Friend and I were left shocked and felt we had been treated appallingly by 2 extremely rude women. Whilst we were putting my Grandson in the car the older women came out and further patronised us with her offering of a dusted off cellar chair and we told her that her colleague was vile and it had gone beyond the chair. She walked off. Having read through the reviews I can see hands have changed and so this may be why I didn’t receive the reputation I had heard of. I have the feeling they felt they were above us! I’m not easily impressed so their Morgan cars and gold large Baroque chairs only further deepens my suspicions that they think they’re better 🤣🤣

As we entered the lovely lady came to us with menus. Food was brought to us on hot plates and presented very nicely. We all enjoyed what we had. Thankyou will return.
