Athena B Fish Bar in Brighton and Hove

Honestly might be the best fish and chips in the world. I come here regularly and am never disappointed. The staff are all lovely, the cute one with curly hair is always up for a chat, I bet he brings all the tips LOL!! Overall a 10/10 experience, fish is not too greasy, and the batter is perfect. chips are double fried, and there is a perfect mix between long chips and the little crispy ones. OH MY GOD THE VEGAN OPTIONS ARE AMAZING!! Cooked separately, and I now think "ToFISH" is my favourite meal... I LOVE ATHENA B <3333 Keep up the good work.

Havent been in here for years so thought id give it a go , Sorry never again , Two reasons ,prices were over the top , and i just couldnt believe when I saw them weighing the chip portions and even removing a few chips ! What food I got tasted ok ,but seeing them weighing the portions has put me right off .

Really disappointed how this establishment has gone from great to awful.! Rates extreme and I understand prices have gone up, but weighing portions of chips now and them being a lot less , it’s not a good combination. £4.10 for 450g - Yes they weigh them and confirmed the weight.! Not customer friendly and exploiting young staff members ( 15 or 16) who look lost behind the counter. On minimum wage. I won’t be returning and the chips weren’t that good either.

Disappointing, perhaps an off night? Not particularly busy when I visited but the member of staff on the till seemed very confused and lost, he had to be helped with each order I saw being taken by his colleague who was doing the frying. That's forgiveable if the foods ok but it really wasn't. I only ordered two portions of fish and one chips to take away to eat at home which is barely 5 minutes walk away. The chips weren't very hot or crispy but benefited from a few minutes in the oven. The fish looked ok (although not the lovely golden colour in the headline photo) but flabby batter was left in the cardboard tray when I took it out and even after a couple of minutes in the oven the batter was crispy in places on the outside but it was thick and wet on the inside, particularly for the pollock. Was it edible? Apart from some of that batter Yes. Was it expensive? That's relative, but I suppose it wasn't for a take away but it was compared to supermarket fare. Was it enjoyable? For me no, not at all although my other half thought it was better than I did. I also asked for 'no salt and vinegar' as I prefer to add that myself but the chips had been salted. I'd prefer not to criticise a local business but at the end of the day, local or not the food needs to be up to a certain standard and this evening it just wasn't so. A case of buyer beware. Perhaps it was just an off night and we were unlucky but based on this evening I wouldn't rush back.

Large cod was definitely not large, we were still hungry after eating. Usually buy from another fish and chip shop but thought I'd give Athena B a go. Wouldn't go back. Chips were nice though.

This is a really nice restaurant and take away with great options for food, with vegan, vegetarian, meat and fish options available

I have to admit I steered clear as my previous review stated I was disappointed. However I went again recently and IT WAS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. REALLY TASTY AND FRESH. CHIPS weren’t too crispy and cod was delicious!

Ordered for 3 people, 3 cod and 1 large chips, the cod was medium size and we only ordered 1 chips as from previous experience with chip shops, 1 bag is more than enough , however for a large it barely went between 2 people! Food was tepid when it arrived, but very tasty all the same, £44 for 3 medium pieces of cod and 1 chips plus delivery definitely put us off ordering in the future!! Maybe just the odd treat every now and then!

Delicious mini fish chips and peas which we ate outside. Really friendly staff who gave us plenty salt and vinegar and sauce.

Paid almost £10 for regular cod and chips. It was a small piece of cod which was okay but the chips were crispy and had, clearly, been been recooked or reheated. You will see they don't display the chips in the fryer. There is a reason for that. I enjoyed scampi and chips there a couple of years ago and had high hopes but they have gone downhill badly since then. I won't go back.

We were recommended to try this place and it didn’t disappoint. Very reasonably priced and great selection on offer. We were the first ones to use the click and collect service which was really simple to use. The chips were fluffy as they should be, the fish all white and crispy batter, sausage in batter spot on and peas and tartar sauce really good. Staff were really nice and can’t believe I didn’t know it was there. Will definitely go again but probably not go for large as portion moosive

I was told when I moved to Hove that this is "The One". It is. The best fish and chips ever. Spikey batter, moist fish, just perfect. So often fish shops overcook the fish. We had a large Cod and the Hake special. Perfectly cooked, perfect batter with well timed frying. I fry fish at home but if I could replicate this I would be in heaven. Thank you for the best that I think anyone can do. We will be back whenever we want fish and chips.

The Athena B is our local fish and chip shop and since their recent refurb they are serving the best fish and chips in the area. The batter was light and crispy and the quality of the fish good. Chips perfect.

Wow, we just tried Athena B for the first time. We had hake, scampi, chips and the best part - “Hove Actually” loaded chips - soooooo delicious, best fish and chips we have had in Brighton! Thank you!

Lovely haddock and chips. Cooked fresh to order, well presented. Restaurant has been redecorated and has upmarket chippy feel. The haddock was really nice, succulent and light batter. Great service and so pleased to have this as my local chippy!

Lovely food and great atmosphere at the shop. Very chatty owners :) I had tofish with chips, mashy peas and vegan tartare sauce. Don't understand why people complain about the portions. It's enough to fill you up! I went for reg chips so if you're extremely hungry go for large chips. Everything very delicious and fresh! My only one suggestion is to skip nori sheet for tofish as it looks like fish skin. Thank you and see you again soon!

This is now our go to fish and chip takeaway. Amazing vegan options and everything is always delicious. Is isn't even our local but it's worth the extra distance. Attention to detail is great, down to the vegan tartare sauce

Been meaning to give Athena B a try so we made the trip down to portslade. Blown away with the portion size which defeated me though I did have the tofish(massive portion) chips mushy peas and tartare sauce and two battered sausages to try. The chips were the best I've had and certainly was worth the journey from Steyning. Next time i hope to try their tofu fishless cake read great reviews about them. We don't often have takeaways but I know where to go next time I need a chippy fix

I wrote a review regarding difference between online order of Large fish portion and in store order of Large fish portion. When I questioned this in store, I was told all portions are weighed.. So large portion in store is the same in weight as online bought Large. Yet in comparison huge difference in not only fish but box size. See photo. Hugely disappointing from a shop that is much loved in the community. You can fool some people sometime but you can't fool everyone all the time.

Amazing vegan options! I ordered some take away with my sister & brother in law and was absolutely delighted by their vegan options - so tasty, generous portions, reasonably priced, & it was just lovely to have some good old “fish and chips”. The vegan tartare was to die for, and the tofish delicious! The service was really friendly and super quick & fresh. 10/10!

We ordered through Deliveroo as we usually do and our piece of cod hadn't arrived. This was the second time in I think three orders that an item hadn't arrived. The first was a portion of chips and when I rang that time I was told I could have the chips on the house but had to go get them which entirely defeats the point of ordering a takeaway. I shrugged it off as a one off and actually didn't even request a refund of the item through Deliveroo.This time we phoned again and effectively were called liars by somebody who said they check every order before it leaves. Well, either they don't check very well or the Deliveroo driver has a taste for cod as the only fish round here are alive in our neighbours pond! We were told the fish would not be coming because they don't have delivery drivers so this time i've requested the refund of the fish through Deliveroo. Athena B, your chips are very nice which is why we have ordered from you a fair bit but that is the last time and you have lost a customer.

Finally got to try the vegan menu and it was really nice. We live in Kemptown so kade a special trip but was worth it. The best thing was the vegan fish style cake and tartar sauce, absolutely lovely. All home made and not just out of the freezer and into the fryer. It was so nice to have proper choices in a chip shop that wasn’t just chips. They do tofish and battered Richmond sausages too, all really nice. Lovely people,Thanks so much

Have been a customer for over 10 years and obviously tried fish and chips elsewhere, but nothing beats Athena B for the quality and quantity of their food. Personally I order using JustEat when not able to pop in myself and never had a problem, the food always arrives hot and tasty :)

Firstly I would point out that Athena B has been our choice of good old British Fish and Chips since living in Hove over 10 years. The quality and quantity is normally perfect and I would recommend.But did they start running out of fish on Saturday evening? Normally my premium Large Battered Cod would be the best looking and tasting meal, except this time it looked like a creation from Dr Frankenstein! It was definitely not a 'whole' piece of fish, rather chunks put together and disguised by heaps of batter and scraps. It was tasty as usual, I was hungry and finished the lot. And as I expected did not leave me feeling full up and content as it usually does.When you are paying £2 more for an item on Uber Eats I expect the full quality as before.To summarize I don't want to put anyone off this usually fantastic Fish and Chip shop, I will still be buying my traditional meal from here, but I think I will be collecting for a while to make sure I am getting what I pay for and not unpleasantly surprised.

Absolutely the tastiest version of tofu 'fish' I've ever tried (and this is Brighton, after all). Really delicious marinated flavours and the most delicate yummy batter! The chips are stellar too, looking forward to trying the other new menu items soon. Great service too, the owner was very helpful regarding ingredients info and everyone in the store was really friendly.

This is our favourite fish and chip shop. The food is always delicious, flavoursome and fresh and never greasy. The people who work there are kind and provide free meals to the homeless, for an hour of the day. A small business to continue to support!

Unfortunately a bad meal tonight. Pie was congealed, and chips seemed coated in something like a fine black dust. Like they had been dropped. Deliveroo unresponsive. Shame as previous meals from here have been OK.

I understand this changed ownership in the last few months and I did enjoy it before but I think has improved. The food is nice and there is now quite a big range of items on the menu. The pricing is OK but it's the service which really makes it great. The owners are always really friendly and nice. I've been about 3 times now and each time is really good.

Situado en la bulliciosa calle principal de Portslade, el Athena be Fish Bar es pequeño, está amueblado de forma sencilla y está impecablemente limpio. La bienvenida es amable y el servicio es bueno. Nuestro pescado y patatas fritas eran deliciosos, ya un precio razonable: el pescado fresco y suculento, las patatas crujientes y doradas por fuera, y harinosas dentro. ¿Que es no gustar? Un chippy británico tradicional, y muy digno de elogio.

My second visit which was as good as the first. Crispy batter and golden chips all served by friendly staff. Just wish I lived nearby so I could enjoy the experience more often.

Sometimes when we go to Brighton we try to find some really good Fish and Chips for tea before heading home. After lots of average chip shops I decided to have the 10 minute detour to try this place beacuse of the reviews. Excellent Fish and Chips as voted by the kids and myself.

Came across this place by accident and discovered it was amazing. I chipped over the doorstep and haddock a bit of a fall. I banged my eel, battered my sausage and chipped my tooth. The man said to me "oh my cod bless my sole " The man behind the counter had huge muscles . He helped me up and said " a lot of people skate on my floor don't worry you won't hake for very long. Just DAB it with cotton wool" we became good mates and had a WHALE of a time! I asked him what his name was and he said John Dory. This is just a load of codswollap but the fish and chips here are seriously amazing LoL

I have eaten cod &amp; chips on several occasions in this restaurant, &amp; they are excellent. The cod is only lightly battered, which is lovely because you get more fish. Unlike other establishments that serve you with all batter &amp; a tiny bit of fish inside. Also the fish &amp; chips are not greasy. Lovely for the tummy. No need for indigestion tablets. The only reason that I have rated it as 4 is because they don't serve bread &amp; butter as an option with the meal. However, they will serve you with a burger bun if you ask for one.

The Athena B serves brilliant, crispy fish and chips at a low price and the staff are friendly. The best thing is its proximity to nice quiet parts of the coast (5 minute walk to Hove Lagoon). Being further out from the centre of Brighton you can take your food to the beach and have it to yourself (or share it with the seagulls if you're unlucky!) The cod is always great but their fishcake is really flavoursome too.

Be prepared to wait for your fish , which is not a bad thing as it's worth the wait.I have to be honest loved the fish n chips .I'm trying to be honest I have tasted better, but it's pretty close to my personal best fish n chips I've had in the area .

Freshly cooked fish with nice chunky chips. Generous portions, with table service and under a tenner including a tea! No limit on condiments either. I had the Huss (Rock Salmon) - actually the dogfish, a form of shark, but its white (ish) and very tasty.Level access for wheelchairs and level but not wheelchair access to toilets.I'd prefer better quality cutlery which is more comfortable to use, and larger paper napkins, but .......A thoughly good lunch - I'll go back.
