Ate O Clock in York

went to Ate 0’Clock last night for my birthday meal with my husband and daughter and we all give it 10/10! We were warmly welcomed by Harry, which really set the tone for us. He was so obliging and professional and did this all with such lovely smiles! The restaurant was clean, loved the decor and the food extremely delicious with great portion sizes. Just go along - you won’t regret it!

We saw the set menu offer and decided to give it a go. It proved to be very good value for money. Starters were generous and tasty (tempura prawns for mum and halloumi fries for me - easy to share too!) and the confit duck leg was delicious and so tender, just falling off the bone. Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, and the atmosphere was lovely.

We had pre booked our table and just as well as it was very busy. We were warmly welcomed and the restaurant looked gorgeous. The decor was really stylish. It also has a really good ambience. Everyone who served us was attentive, friendly and professional. Our food was amaaaaaaazing. I had chicken supreme and it was perfect. For what it was, it was reasonably priced. We went elsewhere the next night but I was wishing we'd gone back to Ate. If we return to York we will be back. Thanks to the team for welcoming us.

Friendly vibe, great food! We enjoyed a lovely evening here, food service was quick and efficient but we didn't feel rushed. Two courses with drinks felt reasonable in price and the meal was gorgeous, tasty, hot and freshly cooked.

Visited Ate Oclock for the 2nd time this weekend, the restaraunt is quirky and a great ambionce. The food was beautiful the staff brilliant and attentive. Lovely place and reasonably priced. Deginitely recommend.

Not such a great place I’m afraid. The decor is lovely and the food decent but it’s certainly NOT vegetarian friendly. The staff were cold and unhelpful when asked about vegetarian options. We came for Sunday roast dinner and I asked if there was a veggie option - the staff member said Yes but the only “option” was a roast dinner without the meat. And despite other veggie items on the menu they flat out refused to even contemplate any sort of substitutions. Really unfriendly and can’t recommend it.

Really amazing food and really lovely staff. We were served by Liz and had a really lovely evening. Great selection of food and drinks. Also had some lovely cocktails.

My partner and I went here for my birthday meal. For starter I had the bread and oils and my girlfriend had garlic bread. The garlic bread is better as a side as there were 4 pieces and we didn't want to eat too much prior to our main meals. I ordered the sirloin steak and she had the mushroom linguini. Both meals were hot and tasty and the waiter was great. The steak was a very thick cut, cooked perfectly for my taste (medium rare). I had the garlic butter on top with some chunky chips. We had a side salad of rocket and parmesan which was nice to put on top of the steak too. The mushroom linguini was creamy and delicious. I had the chocolate orange creme brulee for pudding with a glass of Taylor's port. Very nice when I didn't think I had any room left! The malbec red was nice as was the rose white zinfandel. We were booked in for 18:30 and as we were there the seats quickly filled up. Booking is a must. Lovely evening with lovely food. Thank you.

A really enjoyable meal with excellent service. Staff members were friendly and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Also had a light lunch here on another day - and the soup was "to die for".

This is a lovely restaurant. Excellent food and nice staff. We had a very pleasant evening. Would definitely recommend.

This was the first time I had been here, we were greeted and shown to our table, we were provided with menu's by Emilie who introduced herself, we ordered and the first course arrived after short wait, the soup was tasty and was not a skimpy portion, the main course followed which was plentiful and tasty, I did not have a sweet, but my grandson did, and he said it was excellent. We finished with coffee, served in what I would describe as a decent sized cup. All in all the food and the friendly service, was excellent. I would have no hesitation in going back next time I visit York. One thing that I felt was good was the way the service charge was explained. This was followed by and excellent evening at the theatre.

Looked so promising with the fab entrance and decor, but the effort stopped there. The tables were crammed in, the food was terrible, and definitely microwaved. The scallops to start were like jelly and we did not trust that they could be eaten. Would defo not recommend

Food was lovely, dauphinois potatoes were a bit stogie. I prefer the potatoes to be slightly separated not resemble a cream slice. The lamb was beautiful as was the Wild Mushroom pasta. Brie as the starter was delicious too. Service was great, very attentive and pretty location but be cautious of sitting under the outdoor heaters, that’s why we didn’t stay for pudding.

Such a shame! It was a birthdays trip for both of us, asked for a nice table, did not get one! Had to ask for drinks waited ages! Food just microwaved! Tasteless seafood arancinis, more effort needed!! Mains ok bit nothing to shout about!

Absolutely stunning place and beautiful food, I can honestly say that was one of the best meals we’ve ever had! It was my birthday and the team made it very special for me and brought out a birthday pudding which I really appreciated, it was the perfect end to a special day. I would definitely recommend this place and we will definitely be returning when we next visit York!

Not the best by a long way corridor leading to dining area smelt of sewage nearly turned round at that point but as celebrating a special occasion decided to continue thankfully smell not in restaurant area not impressed with the food had the fish and chip very poor fish more batter than fish same smell in corridor as we left

We tried this restaurant for the first time 24/02/24 during our visit to York. Upon arrival we managed to get the only table for two available as we hadn’t pre booked. Initially we thought we were lucky to get this but as the afternoon progressed I think it would have been better if we had gone elsewhere. The table was located near the door. This area has only one infrared heater and in the middle of winter is incredibly cold, made worse every time the door is opened. The cold restaurant was only the start however. Adjacent to us was the loudest and rowdiest table for 6 I have ever encountered. I have no issues with people enjoying themselves but the noise resonating off the cold hard surfaces made for a terrible afternoon and this review is being written by someone who is hard of hearing. The maitre d and the waiting staff were clearly aware of this issue and had regular ‘group chats’ about it but didn’t do anything to reduce the volume. I guess if a big table spends a lot of money on alcohol then that’s a good thing for them. Ignore the rest of the customers at you peril however. This isn’t a pub but a family restaurant. Food, when arrived, was served on cold plates. Surely this is a basic for anyone working in the catering industry. So cold food on cold plates in a cold and noisy restaurant made for quick eating. Ironically the desert plates were warmer than those used for the main course. Upon receipt of the bill I asked for the discretionary 10% tip to be removed for all the reasons above. The waitress agreed to all the above. If that was the case why didn’t she do anything about the noise and the temperature? But mainly the noise. So weve been and tried it. Will we be back? Lovely food ..attentive staff .Well priced for the portion size. Very busy for a Wednesday evening..but got a table right away

Really disappointing, decor looks fab but menu very boring and a lot with a red wine jus that didn’t seem to fit the dish. The service was ok but the servers didn’t interact or smile at all. Had the cod with squid ink risotto and didn’t really taste of anything. Shame as good central location. Would not return.

My partner and I had our first date here, it’s definitely our go to for a guaranteed nice meal. Lovely service always and the food is fabulous.

The food - rump steak, halloumi salad - was succulent and really well cooked and prepared. They obviously really care about what they put out on plates. This could be the best rump steak I've had. Friendly and attentive staff added to it. Maybe the main dining room needs a little bit of TLC and I wasn't overly impressed with the Malbec. Just upgrade this wine. It could be a little bit richer. But overall, this was a. REALLY good meal out. Lovely espresso too! It was busy and I'm not surprised. I'd go again tomorrow!

We visited Ate O'Clock last night to celebrate a friend's birthday, There were 6 of us, all of a certain age, 2 of us locals and the others visitors, Our waitress was lovely but the food was so disappointing. Most dishes were slightly overcooked, the worst was the beef burger which was dry and very 'chargrilled', the accompanying bun was also charred. The waitress took it away and came back, quicker than expected, with a replacement. It looked exactly the same as the original apart from the bun, which was not burnt. When the guest pointed this out, she explained that they were not legally permitted to serve the burger medium and offered to replace it with another dish. Unclear as to whether this was to be charged or not. The guest declined as the rest of us had nearly finished our mains by then. Previous reviews have also mentioned the same complaint. Perhaps this is because the burgers are frozen? A very disappointing birthday meal. Would hesitate to return.

We must have gone on a very bad night! I ordered haddock, fries ,peas. When it came out the fish was so greasy, the peas cold and the fries more or less burnt. The presentation was dreadful. The lovely waitress could tell by my face I wasn't happen, she agreed it was so greasy. She offered to change it for me so I had the burger instead. All was ok apart from the soggy but wedges. Will jot be returning again. I must add the waitress was so nice about it.

We had reservations (recommended) and seated promptly. The decor is modern and friendly, but not luxury dining. The menu had numerous options so one would be able to find something they like. The food was served in a timely manner and was hot, which I like. It was very good, but not great. It was a very nice place to eat, rather busy, but nothing about the experience suggested that I should make a special effort to eat there again. I.e. it was a nice place for dinner and you would be happy eating there, but not superb.

We visited Ate O Clock yesterday for our wedding anniversary. We stayed in york for the weekend and wanted somewhere nice to eat that offered gluten free as I am coeliac. It was fantastic, the food was amazing and so was the service. It offered an amazing gluten free menu aswell. To top it off at the end they brought over complimentary glasses of Prosecco and dessert to wish us a happy anniversary which was so lovely. I highly recommend this place and will definitely go back when we next visit York!

Lovely place, friendly staff. The food was lovely. However, it would have been helpful if the waitress had informed us at the start they had no brie starter instead of letting us choose it, then tell us. Also, we ordered biscoff cheesecake, and when it came, it was green as a Halloween twist, which didn't look very appetising. We felt we ought to have been warned in advance.
