Came here today - one of our kids knocked the table which resulted in a full pint (only one sip taken!!) and a coke being spilled. The staff cleaned up the glass then replaced the drinks for free. Actually amazed by the gesture. Our boys are autistic and can easily be triggered - we were ready for ww3 cos one had smashed to glasses. Felt I needed to leave a review because this act of kindness from the staff at the old silver grid has made a massive impact on the kids and our stay. Thanks again x

I hadn't even sat down before a young waiter came to take our order, we ordered 2 bottles of beer, thought it was expensive but wanted to sit outside as it’s a nice spot. A lady came out and quite rudely told us that gratuity isn’t included. Then another young waiter came out and gave us 2 bottles of beer, and 2 glasses. Gratuity not included on taking 2 bottle tops off heavily marked up local beer. Drank our beers as fast as we could and I wont ever got back.

Cafe was this location but not this name. Table service, tick, menu looked nice and planned to have a sandwich. Thankfully went to the loo first, a wise lady many years ago told me to do this if ever in doubt. Needless to say we only had a drink, which was properly hot so another tick. Such a shame as a great spot but with so many alternatives not a place we'd stop at again.

Unbelievable sat down with the wife for food and drinks and told by a miserable woman as it’s a table for 4 and quite busy they won’t be serving us today as they would rather 4 people sat there. Speechless and being a business owner you gotta take it from wherever you can. Anyways had lunch and drinks elsewhere costing £80 so your loss silver grid what a terrible way to run a business. Never again and suspect you won’t be in business long.

Met my parents here for lunch, while waiting for us they were challenged twice by staff for sitting on a four person table. We ordered four different sandwiches (ham, crab, prawn and chicken), as they only had one crab sandwich left at 13:30. They were all rubbish, with a small quantity of low quality ingredients, on what looked to be a Warburtons 50/50 loaf. These were priced at £6.25 each on the menu and we were charged £7.25. Location is spot on and this would be a fantastic little cafe in the right hands. To paraphrase Arnie, 'we will not be back!'

Been here before for cake and coffee and it was lovely but this time it was very disappointing. There is a notice saying that they were having difficulty recruiting so were only serving sandwiches. We opted for a crab and a prawn sandwich. Came two slices of dry brown bread, filling okay but that was it - not even s bit of salad or a few crisps - not cheap either. Come on guys show some pride. We have used this cafe along with friends on our annual visit to Whitby over the past 10 years. This year was totally different. The staff were all (without exception) impolite. One of them even grunted "Do you want your change" when we paid our bill. After finishing our drinks I went inside to use the WC, Whilst inside it started to rain, my wife and a couple of friends sheltered under the verandah, the owner came along and asked what right they had to use the verandah to shelter as it was for customers only! Other friends within our group were hurried away from their tables having barely finished their drinks! Stay well away from this cafe would be our advice!

Stopped for a coffee here and sat outside in the market square. The coffee was okay but nothing special and the staff were pleasant enough. The whole place is a little past it's best and feels a bit grotty. I took the opportunity to visit the toilets which is something I would not recommend. The steep staircase down is dark and dingy and the handrail is ...well...I tried not to touch it on the way back up. Arnies is our favourite spot to sit and have a gin and watch all the tourists, perfect if you love to sit and watch the world go by. Arnies isn’t the place to go if you want fast restaurant fast service as due to it being outside and incredibly busy sometimes the service is a little slower. The food is lovely and they have a great choice of drinks, it is a small family run business and the staff are always lovely and attentive. I think people often forget how busy Whitby’s cafes can get when it is the peak tourist season. I was amazed at his total disregard to social distancing guidelines for hospitality - absolutely disgusting behaviour. Having read the recent reviews, we only had a coffee here. The young staff were fairly friendly and it was getting towards the end of the afternoon, so they weren't too bad! The coffee was OK and it was pleasant to sit in the slightly sloping square watching the world go by.

Please do not waste your time and money on inedible and poor quality food. Spent £30 on a luxury fish platter and calamari which were advertised as locally caught fish. It was dire rubbery gougons and the calamari was simply a ring of greasy batter. My tea cup had potato residue in it and the potato salad on the side salad was off.

I visited here with my husband and we had a very pleasant experience. After reading all the bad reviews we were surprised to have good service and staff, although the staff did seem very young to be serving alcohol! We sat outside and had our order taken. We only had drinks but they arrived swiftly. Not much more I can say apart from we would visit again.

Beautiful day lovely town only to be totally let down by this horrible man with attitude who told us whilst we were enjoying a very expensive beer to put our dog on the floor off his bench . Our little yorkie was sitting between us on our coats asleep . Never will we go there again and I would advise anyone else to do the same . Spoilt the whole day . Sneeped my wife and myself . Very close to punching him

Ordered a ploughman’s at £11 was poor quantity on the plate cheap crackers and over cooked side chips . The manager removed an elderly lady who was resting on the seats with an ice cream, although the other seats were empty it was not busy. She told the poor woman they were not insured for ice cream as they didn’t sell it! Disgusting attitude to an elderly person. Hope they are insured for health and safety as the toilet was disgusting and fan not working ! The water burnt my hands and no warning to say the water was very hot! Another reviewer has mentioned asking an elderly woman to go while resting! I won’t return ... I will let my feet do the waking the member of staff appeared to be a manager or owner and ought to be ashamed of themselves !

Called by for a sit down and drinks today with my family. Athough the behaviour of the staff provided us with light entertainment, it was far from what any decent human being would deem as acceptable... Staff were rude towards customers and frequently aggressively shouted across the seating area at them. This was both the older staff and the younger staff. Will not be returning any time soon.

I sat down at a table in an otherwise empty market square (except one man at the far end of the seating area). Young waiter came out to ask what I wanted. I explained I was waiting for my friend, to be told that I couldn’t sit there, they often had people pretending they would order and not ordering, and they had to pay for the seating area. I‘m sure the correct response should have been ‚ let me get you a menu while you‘re waiting and I’ll pop back when your friend arrives to see if you would like anything‘. With all the lovely welcoming establishments in Whitby I certainly won’t be darkening their doors again.

It’s such a shame about this place, the young staff are lovely friendly and can’t do enough for you, but the owner is an arrogant person, my husband and and I go to arnies quite a lot, and love the sun trap . But on this occasion I was with my 80 year old mum, I had my foot on his (very old chairs) was told to put it down, although my foot was on my leather bag, then he dragged the chair away!!

I sat outside with my sandwich and witnessed the most incredible aggressive behaviour from this guy who picks his victims carefully. He was rude to his staff (in public) and three customers while I was there. Apparently, if you have some bottled water bought elsewhere... you cannot sit outside Arnie's even if you buy food from him??? And even if you put the water away in your bag? What is this guy taking? As SOON as you have finished food and drink you must move on... no, don't sit there enjoying the view and digest your food. NOT ALLOWED. I saw one middle aged couple walk away with the man so red faced with frustration and anger I thought he was going to have a heart attack. He told me his wife had been insulted by the owner but didn't go into details. Arnie... you must read these reviews? It's time to call it a day mate, if you hate your work and people so much... pack it in. Because one day you will pick on the wrong frail couple who are staying with their cage fighting nephew who may just decide to pop in for a chat. Maybe that's what Arnold is looking for? I have no idea, but I have never witnessed service as bad as this anywhere. This is a man who could entirely ruin your day. Don't allow it. Stay away from this place until you see the 'Under New Management' sign.

I regularly come to Whitby at Holiday times andclook foward to my visits. We always go to Arnie's as it is such a lovely setting in the Old Market Square, being open air and watching the world go by. BUT today has left me wondering a cafe of child slavery. Having witnessed a young member of female staff being shouted at and then told to stop crying due to how she had been spoken to by whom I presume is the wner or Manager, a lady in her 50s with short spiky hair. This has left me disgraded at state of management style. I imagine if the waitress was probably older she would be able to contest whether she has been subject to bullying and harassment but, as a paying customer I do not expect to see staff being spoken to like this in front of the paying public and I certainly do not wish to hear or witness it. We left quickly after the event and hope that other customers were not subjected to this experience. Unfortunately Arnie....... "we will not be BACK!"

Stopped at Arnie's for a late morning break from taking in the sites of Whitby. My wife had the perfect cup of coffee and I had a very good cup of tea with large slice of Carrot Cake. Which my wife proceed to mug me for as it was delicious. Arnie's is very pleasant place to sit outside and watch the world go by. We returned later for lunch, after seeing the excellent food others had been ordering. We had ploughman's with biscuits instead of bread. Accompanied with a cold beer as it was a clear blue sky sunny day. All very good. Staff very friendly and service was quick and efficient. Good value for money.

This place is great to drop into for a real East Coast piping hot cup of tea! The food isn’t bad either, we had some Crab and Prawn sandwiches. The service was prompt and they also allow dogs inside for when the East Coast Weather hits! When the sun is shining there is a great outdoor seating area.

We called and booked afternoon tea for 4 people last night to have today at 2pm. I asked for a quiet area to sit as my mother is part way through chemo. We also asked for no fishy sandwiches. We arrived slightly early but I advised reception that we were here for afternoon tea, they didn’t seem to know anything about it but we were told to wait in the lounge which was no problem, we could not buy a drink as the bar wasn’t open, so we sat and waited, the manager came and said they were just preparing it and would come and fetch us when it was ready. We waited and waited and at 2.20 my father chased it up it was then brought to us in the lounge area around 2.30 and served on a coffee table with no room for it and with salmon sandwiches. I then advised that we didn’t like the salmon sandwiches so the waiter took away the whole afternoon tea and we had to wait another 15 or so minutes to come back. It’s was absolutely disgusting, apparently the scones were freshly baked and warm when in actual fact they were rock hard and stone cold and stale and looked straight out of a packet, there was barely enough cream to spread a very thin layer on some was that hard they were inedible. The white sandwiches were stale, they egg mayonnaise sandwiches were slimy and the small cakes were still frozen. I’m quite sure they forgot we were coming and threw whatever they could together. I don’t mean to be rude or nasty but the gentleman that served us was very unkept and had an awful odour. I informed reception when I paid the bill and can 100% confirm I will not be recommending or returning. This was a very disappointing as this was the first break and outing since my mother’s diagnosis, and was definitely the worse experience of afternoon tea I’ve ever encountered.

Terrible experience. Horrible atmosphere as soon as we walked in. The guy working there had an attitude problem, shouting at the young female waitress and telling the whole cafe that it was her second day. Had an argument with two other customers as they'd been waiting a while for two cups of tea. Even the customer said that he is stressed and he didn't like that and began arguing. Getting all the orders wrong and blaming the young waitress. Stated he is not taking anymore orders even though I'd been sat on the table and my mum ordered just before me. I had to tell him we were together. Such an uncomfortable atmosphere. How he works in hospitality/customer service is beyond me. Clearly the wrong industry. The poor staff, clearly not a very good trainer, but not his fault. AVOID as you'll only be left disappointed and leaving with a headache.

Really disappointed with our meal, I ordered a soup and was shocked, to say the least, about the portion size , literally half a bowl and when I asked the waiter if it was a mistake he replied that it was head office that control the portion size!!!! Shocking , considering I was charged £6.50 for literally 5 spoonfuls. Prices have risen so much in the last year, ridiculous! Unfortunately the pub lacks atmosphere and we won’t be back! Such a shame as we The Bay but there is a need for a decent pub whose sole purpose is not to rip you off!
