Brilliant.

We had the unfortunate "luck" of spending a night at this place. Got a "suite" under the creaky flooring of the pub with noise-channelling ventilation ducts overhead, a substandard kitchen with no cupboards and wobbly table, a toilet with no ventilation, exposed pipes and disjointed faucet and a door with no handle in sight... All this came with a delayed check-in and service that leaves much to hope for. While the rooms above the pub may make for a better night's sleep, there is little hope that could improve this establishment's culture of hospitality.

First of all if you are looking for luxury this is not the place. However the facilities are adequate and the staff are exceptional, Tony and Yvonne made us very welcome during our three nights stay and Becky makes the pub one of the friendliest pubs we have stayed in. The breakfasts and evening meals were good, you order your breakfast the night before. Would recommend this place for a quiet out of the way friendly stay.

Well I did pay a very reasonable price here which included breakfast so I was not sure what I would find. Firstly beautiful location in the village and north York moors. Arrived Friday night my room was and looked like the bargain I paid bedding obviously clean but stained with nail varnish I think/hope, it was a bit cold too. Had a ok meal meal but staff and locals pretty friendly so thought happy and value for money. At Breakfast (which you order in advance via a tick sheet) I ordered full English however mine appeared with no sausage? I asked what happened and was told I had not ticked the right box but was told sorry and the waitress walked off , I thought surely they would just bung some in? They would have been veggie 2 mins in the microwave? Did not worry me too much until I left but she was so dismissive. Verdict- probably worth paying more elsewhere….

Been out for a ride on motorcycles with friends and my son. Booked this hotel after a quick call to see if they could accommodate 6 motorcycles. Arrived at the hotel stunning views and a very warm greeting. Its a 3 star hotel and that pretty much as its an old building and it doesn't try to be the ritz but was spotless clean and cosy. Good shower, clean towels shampoo body wash tea coffee etc. But what wasn't short of 5 stars was the staff they couldn't do enough for you. The young man behind the bar was very friendly and chatty and the young lady that looked after the rooms and serving us really couldn't be more helpful. The food I am going to say was some of the best home made pub food I have ever had the chips are something to die for. And the breakfast is a proper breakfast not a mouth full but you left ready for the day. If you want a very friendly and fair priced hotel near whitby with some brilliant food and better staff I would recommend 100 percent thank for taking care of us we will see you again I'm sure 🙏❤️

The pub is located outside the village and we found it difficult to locate- our fault for assuming it would be near the shop. Eleven walkers arrived to an empty pub and we were greeted warmly- others trickled in as we downed cold Peroni and pub food. The nut burger was ok although the bun was more like cotton wool than bread. It is not the intention to carp about the food because we should be glad that the place is open at all during a sleepy August afternoon. Friendly and efficient service makes the experience pleasant and it better than a standard packed lunch when you are walking the coast to coast and in need of sustenance.

We were staying locally and decided to call in the village pub for a few drinks early in new years eve which we quickly regretted. The pub is not very welcoming at all, the seating tired and uncomfortable with random dart boards scattered cross the floor... It was still Christmas time yet the Christmas tree stood bare and isolated in at the back of the room undressed adding to the depressing atmosphere. It became even more depressing when we assume he was the landlord walked over, yanked the tree from its position and dragged it out the room! We were just waiting for somebody to say 'leave now Christmas is over, we don't want any customers'. It was a real shock to enter such a miserable atmosphere on a new years Eve but not only that for a local pub in a quaint village to be so dismal. My advice would be for the owners to take a trip to nearby Egton and experience the fantastic hospitality at The Wheatsheaf Inn where the staff are happy and the evironment warm and friendly.

Having dined in restaurants all over the UK & Europe, the stroganoff was the tastiest i've ever had, as was the scampi and steak pie. The guest ale "Striding the riding" from the Helmsford brewery was out of this world, so as pale ale connoisseurs drinking almost 3 gallons of it in a week, I think that says it all !!

Overall disappointing. Came here for a pre-theatre meal ( Esk Valley Theatre.. again excellent this year) and left feeling that the food was very average. Limited choice and served up with little finesse or imagination and of variable quality. A starter of plaice goujons was good, if scant as in three small pieces, but the pate which was supposed to be served with toasted ciabatta arrived without butter and with barely warm limp ciabatta. Accompanying both starters was a salad garnish with a few mixed leaves, chopped red and green peppers and no dressing. Mains were minute steaks, both fairly tasty but sinewy and rather tough and with the same saladgarnish....not a piece of tomato , cucumber or onion in sight, or any dressing again!I understand that you only get what you pay for, and at £12.95 per head this could hardly be termed expensive, but with some minimal additional culinary professionalism the meal could have been made acceptable.Plus points: a pleasant friendly waitress, decent wine and good beer.Minus points: small, cold dining area with hard wooden chairs the lack of a friendly welcome on arrival

we called at Arncliffe on a Friady night, we had been driving round looking for somewhere to eat, and being unable to find a table anywhere. We were not dissapointd. It was a veritable oasis, as we were hungry ,tired and fed up.The pub can best be descrbed as homly, not at all dirty, but rather lived in. We sat in a dining area of the pub, which whilst not exeptional, was very much ok , I have eaten in far worse places. We chose the mushroom stroganoff ,which we love, and to be fair there was not a huge veggie choice. That came with rice, and being hungry we ordered a portion of chips as a side. WOW what chips, they were proper chips. The whole meal was first rate. We were unable to eat a sweet, but I really wish I could have tried there bread and butter pudding , I am sure that would have been lovely.Service was good, price very reasonable.

Stayed here on our last night of Coast -to Coasting. The worst B & B of our walk. Room was extremely small, just space for a poor quality bunk bed, which had once been part of a pair, tatty bedside table. No wardrobe to hang clothes, just a couple of hooks on the wall. The bed linen was very suspect to the extent that I did not sleep in the bed, but preferred to sleep on top of the bed covered in my anorak. Shower room not very clean, mirror still had not been cleaned from use by previous occupants.Had the air of a DHSS B & B accommodation. Food O.K. For the standard felt that it was very over-priced.

We ate at the Arncliffe Arms when we were doing the Coast to Coast walk. It was a Thursday but there were only six other people in the pub, all diners, all walkers. The pub as a reasonable ambience. The staff are efficient but what makes this establishment is the chef. She really knows her stuff. I was sufficiently impressed with dinner to take the trouble to discover that the chef is a certain Anthea, that she is local, and she is a vegetarian. Not for the first time during our walk we were surprised at the quality of food being served up in a North Yorkshire pub. My wife ordered Beef Stroganoff and I ordered Pork in Peppercorn sauce. Both dishes were beautifully cooked and presented and far, far better than what you would expect to find in a pub. I doubt that you would get better in a reasonably expensive restaurant. The more I eat in Cumbria and North Yorkshire the more I realise that we are getting a raw deal in pubs and restaurants in South East England. This was definitely one of the best pub meals we have every eaten. If driving, it is well worth making a detour to go there.

We stayed here on the final day of our Coast to Coast and compared to where we had stayed before this was a huge disappointment. The room was poky and small, the shower door broken and the staff watched as we struggled to carry our bags upstairs having run over 30 miles that day and didn't even offer to help. The evening meal was ok but very greasy and I would have preferred not to have had to share my dinner with a dog who kept wandering around and putting it's head on other people's tables. If you want a good night sleep then don't go on a saturday night as we did. Karaoke was on and we were told it would only be on until 11pm but it went on until after midnight. We also wanted an early start on Sunday morning to finish our coast to coast and we were told by the barmaid that we could have breakfast at 7.15am. We came down at 7.15am and there was no one up and we had to leave without breakfast. We walked past other people who had stayed over who also had to leave without breakfast. It would have been nice if they had at least told us that they wouldn't be serving breakfast at that time and we would have tried to make other plans. I wouldn't recommend. Very, very disappointed.

Party of 5 was expecting a good evening meal after long days walk. Interior looked a bit tired but menu seemed ok. Were looking forward to a good steak and going by the price of this and the other meals had every expectation. The others had some chicken smothered in cheese and rather greasy chips. No steak knife was provided but doubt a surgeons scalpel would have cut the steak. On complaint the plate was taken away to do what with the steak was not made clear. It returned just as the others finished their meal with the statement 'that the worst bit had been cut off'. It had but the rest was still inedible. No apology and we left having paid for the other meals and drinks. Very disappointing experience and far removed from their slogan. We really hope that other clients have a much better meal as this is one of the few places on the C to C route in Glaisdale where you can eat.

I stopped for a drink and lunch at the Arncliffe during June 2013 and was disappointed to find that my first 2 choices of beer were not available and the food was and I am sorry to say - awful. I had a sandwich with a side of chips. The chips were the worst ever - dripping in fat and soggy. I also noticed that there were groups of American tourists who seemed to be there due to prior arrangement with the travel company and landlord. Fortunately, for the Arncliffe, the tourists seemed to think the food was acceptable and were very gracious. All i can say is that that yanks think dirty dank interior, bad food, satellite TV and empty beer casks is typically british and "twee"I dont know the situation with regards to the management however I do know potentially they are sitting on a little goldmine and the manager/landlord needs to up his anti - be more socialable, get to grips with stock and sort out the food. What he needs to remember is that tourists do re-visit areas so there is futuristic business however I and I am sure others wll drive past the Arncliffe when next on the Moors. Very, very disappointed.

This is not the norm ... but here I go.My friend and his missus (plus son) intend to stay at the Arncliffe on their visit from the USA in June.I was shocked to read the most recent review , and have just noticed (before typing) that that the person who wrote the most recent review, had given such low marks to the Arncliffe. In accessing Trip Advisor, to start this write up, I noticed that this same person had also given bad reviews to other establishments in the locality. No matter - and by a stroke of luck - this being Sunday 12th May 2013 - I attended the quiz at my local pub as usual. It came to pass in conversation (in between questions) that my friend Fred with his sister , had visited the Arncliffe today for Sunday Lunch at approx. 2.00 pm.Fred ( and sister) like all of us in this part of the world , love their food and I was anxious to see if standards had dropped as dramatically as the previous subscriber had described. Fred had had Roast Beef and his sister had Lamb.He told me ,it was beautifully served, plenty of vegetables , but Fred, the rascal that he is, says he could have done with a few more roast potatoes , and parsnips and maybe a bit more veg, I should point out that Fred "could eat for England" and said that in the overall scheme of things ,that , his sister was delighted with her meal and Fred was more than pleased despite ( because he was driving) being unable to sample the delights of the cask ales ( Black Sheep and Bombardier). Readers I hope will believe that I have absolutely no connection to the Arncliffe , I'm just so pleased that the bad review will not stop me and my wife enjoying our Sunday Lunch there , and just as importantly , will not spoil our US cousins stay in this part of the world.I'm going to tick the boxes on Fred's behalf so that I complete the review - trust that I do it properly.

The pub was dark and dirty and the manager not very helpful but the thing that will put me and my wife ever gone back was the food that I would not even feed to my dog. Had fresh fish n chips or so the menu said when the fish came out the batter was very dark and teased of old oil and the chip teased the same. What was once a nice pub has been turned into what it is now. One can only blame the new manager and clear lack of ideas

Eaten here several times over the last few years. New manager Paul is trying hard to get it right and has made many improvements. I had a special - pork belly, black pudding mash and apple fritter which was excellent. Pork succulent and a good proportion of black pudding in the mash. Veg were cooked nicely too, just perfect. I could have eaten another fritter though. The other half had a huge fish with chips which he really enjoyed. And good value too.

Our friends had eaten here and gave a glowing report so we decided to try it for ourselves. Glad we did, the food was fantastic(spicy beef enchiladas highly recommended) and a very cosy and friendly atmosphere made for a great night. Looking forward to our next visit.

Stayed here in September. Weather was awful but the pub made up for it. Basic but comfortable at reasonable price. Food was good, home cooked and freshly made , which understandably took a while to arrive but was well worth the wait. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Would not hesitate to recommend it at all. Will be back again.

This review is for both the dining and the accommodation at the Arncliffe Arms. I stayed one night here before the final walking day for my Coast-to-Coast trip. The food was quite good, portions were generous, and staff was very helpful. Many of the patrons seemed to be locals from Glaisdale, as this seems to be the only remaining pub in town.As for the room itself, it was small but cozy, and the en-suite bathroom was quite clean. However, I did have a fair bit of trouble getting the water temperature in the shower adjusted -- despite my best efforts, it would either be too hot or too cold. After a very hearty breakfast in the morning, I certainly felt refreshed and ready for the final stretch before the finish line.

We stayed in Glaisdale for a week in September and initially went to the Arncliffe as it was the nearest place serving food. We were greeted by the new manager who had only been there for a few days himself. He chatted and told us some of the ideas he had for the place which seemed really good. The food was really good and the atmosphere very welcoming. There must be a very good chef there as everything we ordered was excellent. I really hope people give this place a visit when in the area as we will definitely do if we are anywhere near in the future.

We were visiting friends who were staying in the accommodation at the Arncliffe on their last night of the Coast to Coast walk. The owners and staff were very friendly and really went out of their way to look after everyone. The restaurant part of the pub was very busy with a steady stream of diners, many of them locals which always bodes well, the food was great and loads of it.At the end of the evening we said our goodbyes to our friends and asked the landlady for the number of a local taxi as we were staying 2 miles up the road.Without hesitation she bundled us into her Porsche, and made two trips to drop us off at our digs,it isn`t often that you encounter such hospitality and kindness these days and I am now considering moving to the Glaisdale side of the Pennines! If you visit that part of the east coast make sure you pop in or stay there,my mates said the accommodation was great too! Thanks again to the owners and staff at the Arncliffe Arms.

Situated in almost the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors. Easily accessible from Whitby by motor car, bicycle (your own or hire one), on foot if you feel like stretching your legs or by train there and back. It is a typical British pub, not a glamour palace with loud music thumping all the time. Fabulous, fabulous food. Service, second to none. Plenty of room to walk about, sit and drink or eat. Outside too. Warm beer to remind you that this is England. Oh and did I mention those fabulous ladies behind the bar...

We stayed in the village of Glaisdale whilst on our holidays and after a long drive to get to Whitby we decided to go to the local village pub for dinner. We had already stopped there earlier for a drink and found the young barmaid serving very bouncy and friendly .We ordered a steak pie each with veg and homecut chips, the pie and veg were beautifully cooked and piping hot, just what you need after a long day, The chips were a bit on the dark side and a bit soggy but overall a very good meal and good service for a nice village local!!!

Our family stayed here on the Coast to Coast walk. The staff were friendly and very accommodating eg allowing our dog to be booked in at the last minute and allowing him to sit in the restaurant with us. I understand the current owners have just taken over the pub. They clearly need to make many more improvements. Our rooms were cramped and not particularly clean. Both of the showers cut out twice while we were using them so that we were left cold and wet while the fuses were sorted out. The radiator was leaking so the carpet was wet. However the beds were comfortable and the rooms were not noisy. The setting is very pretty. The food in the bar was reasonable although it arrived very late. Some people walking with us did not receive their food orders till after 10pm.

Had a great dinner at the Arncliffe Arms recently. After walking the C2C track and eating at pubs all along the way the Arncliffe Arms had the best menu. I can thoroughly recommend the stir-fry (the only one I saw along the track). Don't hesitate in giving this pub a go - great food!

Arrrived after poor weather, wet and cold, no heating on and when enquiring if heating could be put on informed they don't put heating on in the summer. However they suggested we use their drying room for drying our boots and clothes. The following morning on collecting our boots and clothes, the boots were no dryer, when i put this comment to them they became extremely upset and abusive.Their drying room is a tumble dryer and when on the room is dryer than a normal room.We spent 18 days walking coast to coast and this was the only B&B with no heating and the worst service

A long but easy day’s walking on our Coast to Coast trip, until we got to Glaisdale !! Steep slope down into the village was a nasty surprise. However, the Arncliffe Arms is on the route and is one of the few places to eat in the area so once we were there we could settle in for the evening. Lots of fellow walkers came in during the evening so we had a great evening- the pub ran some of them back to their B & B’s to avoid the uphill struggle !!. Good food at dinner (Val’s pie was enormous !) and the room was comfortable. We wanted to leave at 7.30 the next morning so settled for cereal and toast rather than wait til 8 for the full breakfast. Staff were all friendly and helpful.During the rest of the walk we stayed at the Black Bull, Kirkby Stephen, the Keld Lodge, Keld, the King’s Arms, Reeth, The Buck Hotel, Richmond, The Blue Bell Inn, Ingleby, Wainstone’s Hotel, Great Broughton, and the Victoria Hotel, Robin Hood’s Bay

I don’tknow if this place is any good. After 15 minutes waiting at the bar, only 1 person got served - by the 2 staff. The 1 ‘serving’ then left 6 of us waiting and went outside to wipe down tables. Rude, surly, we up and left.

I came here during each visit from Canada and we were just getting ready to return again. I am just shocked to find out that they have closed permanently and I can only live with my memories. I wanted to bring my wife there for what I hoped would be another incredible weekend. I can only hope the very best for the family and say thanks for all of the memories and the fantastic bar towels that I still have after 20 years Thank you. Muchas gracias. Hvala, arrigoto, Merci,

What’s really interesting about this cafe is that it’s part of the now closed second funicular tram at the top. Loved the Yorkshire owner of the cafe ☕️. Great bacon rolls before we checked into The Grand next door 🚪 (which we liked ❤️ too)
