During lockdown we ordered a Sunday lunch for home delivery on two occasions, and on both times the food was excellent. This is the first time we have eaten in the restaurant. We are so pleased that we chose the Anglesey Hotel Restaurant. We reserved a table for 3. The service, food and wine were all excellent.

We stayed in the hotel and had dinner in the bar both nights, something we would not normally do, but we were sufficiently impressed by the first meal to repeat. Menu and prices the same in the more formal restaurant and the bar. We sampled 1 starter, 4 mains and 1 dessert in all. All were very good and generous, except perhaps prawn linguine (6 prawns and very little of the promised creamy sauce). Service was friendly and responsive, although at times we could not get attention as there were no staff in the bar: they seemed to be stretched between bar, restaurant, kitchen and reception. Coffee machine not working on either evening (I noticed a similar comment on an earlier review). Food prices more hotel than bar but fair for the quality. "House" wine a touch expensive. We would be very happy to return for a meal or drinks, especially in warmer weather when we could sit outside and enjoy the great location.

Went for a family meal on Saturday evening. There were 2 other small tables dining. Menu was varied and the food was good although it was at the higher end of the price scale for (£6.95 for starters and £5.95 for desert). Lamb, steak and goat curry £17 +. The veg was overdone and soggy, in fact the roasted carrots were burnt. My daughter specifically asked for no beans and guess what? The service was such a let down considering. The water was put down on the other side of the table so someone had to get up and get it. The menus weren’t given out, just put in the middle so we had to sort ourselves. Had to ask for a wine list but were told there wasn’t one, she just told us 3 varieties of red. When she bought it to the table, again she put it in the middle, didn’t even undo it let alone pour any. The glasses not being used or the empties were not removed. Such a shame there was no attention to detail, which when I’m spending over £200 on a meal, I’d expect to be honest.

Arrived at the hotel after a 5 hour journey, given key to our room. Very disappointed as it wasn't very clean ,ceiling mouldy . Spoke to reception who said that the cleaner hadn't mentioned anything to them ......hence the grubby room. Was offered an upgrade but 1 we were too tired and 2 what if this room was the same . Slept badly as the bed was like a large double, plus mattress had seen better day. No bottles of water left in room either. Gave breakfast a miss ,as coffee was stewed, apparently coffee machine was broken ..Not a great breakfast menu either..Really disappointed as it wasn't cheap to stay . Definitely in need of a re vamp .

My wife and I had a dinner delivery last Saturday night. We had three courses, the main for both being the slow cooked belly pork. As you would expect during these difficult times, the food came in polystyrene containers .. but once we had transferred it on to plates, it was excellent. I would especially recommend the pork followed by the sticky toffee pudding! Thank you to all at the Anglesey.

We ordered two main meals for delivery during lockdown two and I was impressed. They let me order something from their in-house menu which wasn’t included on their takeaway menu as I really wanted to try it. I had the mushroom and spinach pie which was delicious! An incredible creamy filling. It came with really good mash, well-roasted veg and broccoli. My partner had the crackled pork belly which was sadly very fatty, but otherwise pretty good in his opinion. I’d definitely order again as I loved the pie and excellent customer service. Easy to order and pay, and the food turned up on time and impressively hot. Thank you :)

We had lunch here on Wednesday my husband had Panko Squid to start which was lovely then belly pork for main which was ok ,I had Fiery Nachos which were poor hardly any cheese or salsa sauce but lots of jalapeños, for main I had salmon. Which was awful it was served with leeks , peas, and fried potatoes which were swimming in oil , tasted like the potatoes were cooked in the salmon oil and that was really not a nice taste at all .. very disappointing!

Went mid week, not been before but nice inside and the bar seemed better for atmosphere. Ordered 1 each of the Pork dishes and they were very dry, lacked flavour (mine had foil on still?) and so bad we sent back. The waitress was superb and very understanding and we ordered burgers as a quick replacement. Unfortunately these were bad as well, questionable pink inside and Burnt to a crisp/cheese on top (which was wrong order anyway).Shame as we'd like to support local business such as this.In summary, nice for a drink, lovely Staff, but won't eat here again.

We had our whole wedding at the Anglesey Hotel. The ceremony was lovely but the organisation wasn’t that good. When we arrived we waited in the public bar which was cramped and busy with no reserved area for us or our guests. After the ceremony we went back into the bar to have drinks and canapés. Still unable to sit anywhere until some people left and then some of our elderly guests were able to sit down. The meal was lovely and the room looked lovely too.We were allowed to take music with us to play after the meal and into the evening. When we were later asked to turn the music down I was furious. No one had complained it was just the chef being difficult. This caused a bad atmosphere to the whole day really and not good memories of what should be one of the most special days of your life. We only had 18 guests including us.We did get a bit of a discount because of it but that doesn’t take away the memories.I must say the rest of the staff were very nice and attentive, but if I had to recommend it I would think twice.

I have eaten here a couple of times, always giving it another chance to impress - but I usually find myself disappointed. Trying to be a fine dining place - it doesn’t live up to it. The menu is large and confusing, trying to cater for most people, it has the best intentions but doesn’t quite work. Whenever we’ve eaten here, we have always found something “wrong” but not enough to send back or put us off for good. I suppose high hopes for a good sounding menu are always somewhat let down. I like the interior of this place, but it is more of a pub for me, and should try to cater as such. Will I come back here - not through choice I’m afraid. But I wouldn’t moan and complain should it be required.

My parents needed a one night stop in Gosport, and this seemed the best place to stay. We met them for dinner and had a drink in the atmospheric, and busy bar. When we moved to to the dining room we were the only people there, and I must admit I was a little nervous of what i thought would be cooking straight out of the 1980s..... however we all thoroughly enjoyed a hearty, tasty meal, which I though was well priced for what we received. After a tour of this Georgian building we decided to stick around and have a meal in the bar of the hotel. I have to mention that the menu is the same wherever you eat in the hotel, the menu applies to the restaurant and the bar. We would have liked to have eaten in the restaurant / function room, but that had just been used for a talk about the building, and although probably the nicest room in the building we had our meal in the bar.The bar is like your typical British pub: simple seating options with as decor 'anything that looks quirky, old or of interest' standing on shelves or stuck on the wall, including a few pictures of notable guests.Service is reasonably quick, and friendly. When I asked for a cleaner knife, that appeared in very little time. The menu has something for everybody, including vegetarians, and the food is not overpriced (which was a bit of a relief after having seen the rooms and the room prices). Our ciabattas were served on wooden cutting boards, and they were tasty and well prepared.Pity the machine for the hot chocolate wasn't working, but I suppose you can't have everything. All in all a good experience, and we've taken careful note of the interesting Christmas menu the proprietor was promoting - who knows...

Apart from that the staff were helpful, accommodating, although I did feel we were treated more lowly than those in the restaurant. The surroundings of the Anglesey are very grand (the area was modelled on the Royal Crescent in Bath), unfortuantely this time it wasn't grand for me and I felt a little let down for my birthday lunch. We also popped into the bar -very interesting, very nice and cosy lots of interesting things to look at on the walls superb little place.( waitress service is not always the most important thing to a visit if you have good friends to chat to whilst waiting for a good meal that's more important ) Will most certainly introduce this little find to all Friends and frequent visits are on the cards

Very nice meal in lovely surroundings. Service was slow because only one person was serving but then it wasn't very busy. The food was very tasty. I had the salmon with pesto mash and loads of separate fresh vegetables. Good value for money.

Nicely run restaurant with friendly staff. Used this for a working lunch recently. Good selection of food and drink, although not the best espresso I've ever drunk!Reasonably priced and quietly located.

Having attended several "country" theme evenings at the Anglesey last year, we were aware that some Trip Advisor reviews expressed concerns re sameness when they are repeated. To keep it fresh, this was a "Dominican Republic" evening, for which the restaurant was fully booked - probably around 40 covers. The change from a waitress service for a choice of two starters to the new one-course buffet with far wider choice worked well, as the dishes included salads and accoutrements (bread rolls, butter, etc.) for those who may have wished to create two courses.Alongside the salads, the hot meat choices were chicken with chillies, braised beef with olives, marinated pork with aubergines and "La bandera", a delightful Dominican dish with a great taste and a slight after-burn without being too hot. Vegetables included plantain, christophenes with aubergine, sweet potatoes, and the rice was cooked with coconut - tasty! The fixed price buffet is £9.95 and it is on the basis of eating as much as you wish, with no time pressures. We condier this excellent value for money. We now look forward to "All you can eat Ireland" on St Patrick's Day, 17 March!

We have been to the Anglesey many a time but have never written a review. Bar one bad experience at a theme night, the restaurant and bar food has always been very good. The Valentines dinner was exceptional and the new style, upmarket menus were well represented. Four courses and well cooked food plus coffee for just under thirty quid a head. Service was good and the restaurant was specially decorated for the event.Well done to Ray and the team for a wonderful night. If you want a good meal at good value in Gosport, you would be well served at the Anglesey

Was always curious to stay in this magnificent building and very much enjoyed the experience. Clean and contemporary room with excellent view, still retaining the character of the building overall. Excellent breakfast cooked on-demand and met the owner (it is great that he stays close to his customers). Would recommend overall.

My wife and I recently used the hotel for Sunday lunch, and I must say, it was very good indeed, with the food freshly prepared, and of very good quality served very hot in lovely surrounds of the hotel restaurant. Just one thing made us rather disappointed was the fact that although we ordered drinks, we were charged £ 1 - 40 for a jug of tap water was a little mean spirited.

Have eaten here numerous times, but the standard has seriously gone down. The service was pretty average and when I sent my starter back because it was pretty awful, no apology or alternative was offered. I asked them to take it off the bill which they did. I found their damage limitation poor. Service was sporadic and somewhat abrupt. The food selection is quite good, but the end product is mediocre. Not on my 'visit again' list.

Having gone to the Anglesey every Remembrance Day for the last 6 years and on multiple other occasions too I have to say how disappointed I was with our experience today. The dining room had been packed with people to the point where the waitresses had to squeeze through the smallest gaps between tables. We had to wait for ages to be given menus and have our order taken. The food was substandard compared to previous experiences and despite ordering children's portions we were charged full portion prices. I don't usually leave reviews good or bad but this was sorely disappointing.

Stayed at the Anglesey hotel in September as we were at a wedding locally. The room was lovely and had obviously been refurbished recently. Got very warm during the night though and couldn't open the window very wide. Only negative (which isn't the fault of the hotel) is there's a lot of noise from people walking by late at night. Breakfast the next morning was good - full English!Nice hotel and would stay there again.

We have been coming to the 'themed evenings' for almost 3 years, however now that we're into 'repeats', have decided to call it a day as the food does become very 'samey' after a while. And judging by tonight's service by the new young waitresses we have made the right decision. No staff to take coats and show us to our table and we waited 30 minutes for our drinks and 50 minutes for our starters. The buffet dishes were not replenished often enough and the whole experience left us very unhappy compared to previous visits.

We ate at this restaurant as we were staying at the hotel, we had arrived at 7ish and it was too late to find a table elsewhere. Out starters was a little dissociating, the goats cheese was deep fried, ok not such a problem, but it also had rice inside, why? The pulled pork was very nice and quite a large portion, the bread and olives were huge! It was just as well that the gentleman that ordered it was used to large meals. The steak wasn't cooked properly and was returned, the chicken Kiev was very dry inside not much juice and quite crunchy on the outside due to being over cooked. Coffee and deserts were fine. We had breakfast twice here, not consistent at all, asked for a pot of tea they didn't do that you had to help yourself on the table provide with breakfast cereal, fruit (well orange segments) yogurt, then they served another table with a pot of tea, asked for toast one day it came with butter packs, the next day it was served buttered which we didn't want. Not a lot of choice with jam, marmalade, so you either took it from another table or asked again, the waitresses are very young not very well trained and lack interest of there customers on the breakfast serving, not that bad on the evening serving.

Each month, usually in the third week, the restaurant offers a menu based on the cuisine of one country - recent examples are Moroccan, Hungarian and this month Thai food.My wife and I booked a table - just as well, as the restaurant was full on this Thursday evening - and were welcomed by the very pleasant young staff who work in the restaurant and elsewhere in the hotel. The starter was a sharing platter of chicken cakes (similar to fish cakes), shredded pork, vegetables and salad. It was tasty, and well complemented by the two dips provided with the platter. We then enjoyed the Thai buffet, which featured curries (one meat, one vegetable), chicken, a meat stew, spicy noodles, and flavoured rice. We tried all the dishes, and found them all tasty and well cooked. The price for the buffet is just under £10.00 per person, which is very good value. With reasonably priced buffets, the cost of drinks is sometimes exorbitant, but here my wife's Coke was just £1.30 and my J2O £1.80, both sensibly priced.Another good evening at the Anglesey - good value, polite and friendly staff, and good food, well cooked. We will be back in August for the Spanish evening!

My husband and I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday here last night and apart from the incredible architecture of the building, the food was excellent and all served by really cheerful young ladies! My guinea fowl was superb and the vegetarian options that my husband chose were first class! And, as for the Banoffe Roulade, well what can I say apart from amazing!!!! Have already booked to return!

Excellent menu. Very good quality, locally sourced meats and fish. Very well cooked. Lots of choice of the menus. Promo evenings, like Italian night or all you can eat Hungarian food. Lots of good ideas coming out regularly. I really cosy, friendly place. They just need to sort out the back garden and it would be 5 stars. The front garden is lovely for sunbathers and people watching though.

We booked for lunch for a special occasion. Since our last visit twelve months ago, the entrance has been redecorated and looks stunning. The young waiting staff were, as is usual, friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was delicious, very well cooked with superb quality ingredients. Good choice for veggies too, I would go as far as to say food was superior to a high class restaurant we visited recently in the New Milton area. To make this dinning experience absolutely first class I suggest that glassware and cutlery be sparkling and not put out condensated and dishwasher marked. White tablecloths over what are actually tatty tabletops would make it perfect. And make sure the carpet is thoroughly vacuumed. I love this place and will be returning soon and recommend it for any occasion.
