Anchor & Melt in Portsmouth

Absolutely fantastic fish and chips! The batter is crispy, the fish is flaky, and the fries are golden perfection. The service is friendly, and the portions are generous. Five stars, without a doubt!

Chips served in a flimsy polystyrene box like a kebab shop. Sausage taken from the hot hold and reheated in fryer which meant it was horribly burnt tasting and absolutely soaking in grease by I got home and unwrapped it.

We were in town for a gig at the Wedgewood Rooms, very few places for food found which is how we ended up in here...thank goodness! The food doesn't sit for ages under heat lamps, it is cooked to order. This didn't suit someone who flounced out saying he'd find somewhere that had food ready to go, but he missed out! The regular chips are a decent portion size, we had 2 between three of us, and the fish was perfectly cooked. It is a cash-only place, but there is a cashpoint just across the road so it's not a hardship, and the option to sit in was a nice chance to enjoy the good food. Would definitely recommend.

Okay so the lamp on wall is nice, but it ends there, he obviously makes too much money ripping off his customers who probably too drunk to remember, says wide variety but actually a very limited chip shop menu, maybe they still waiting for curry sauce to be invented, who knows, food hot and fresh but, three different sizes of portions of chips are all same size portion and a large cheesy chips costs a pound extra on chips and a pound extra on cheese to the small portion prices of £2.50 ish, becomes £4.50, but the chips portion smaller than the small portion, Tried him 3 different times and same poor service as he makes you wait for him by walking into back maybe hoping you change your mind, but ask for a small amount and you get the large, plus he's either deaf, or really ignorant, I try chatting with him each visit and he just walks off until you stop talking at him, really odd chap, avoid, there's a good one up faucet road, and you don't have to remortgage for a decent size portion of chips.

This is very delicious freshly cooked fish and chips !! It is run by a very friendly couple who recommended lots of things to do in Portsmouth and Southsea . 5 out of 5!

After 30 days of lockdown and fed up having to cook my own meals every evening I was extremely happy to come across this fantastic fish and chip shop open, cooked to order everything was delicious and I will be back again very soon

Seriously overpriced apparently 2 portions of chips for £5.20 that was barely 1 portion from any other Portsmouth chippy! 4 tiny chicken "strips" more like nuggets! Chips were like warm pea fritter was GREASY. Sausages were barely battered. These boxes are small. Really not impressed for the money it cost we could of had twice as much tbh

Have been here a few times now - the food has been great! Really nice chips which are properly fresh, not reheated, and lovely hot crispy fish. Good sized portions - its our first choice for fish & chips in Southsea now 😋.... The place is called Anchor & Malt btw, not Melt!
