We visit anchor at whixley on a Saturday for the carvery once every 4 to 6 weeks and have done so for a few years now. It,s always been unbeatable quality BUT today was terrible. The portion of Pork was small and tough and half of what was on my plate was pure tough fat. (See photo) So disappointed never had this before and may give it a miss in a few weeks spread our wings and give somewhere else a go.

Brilliant&Amazing staff that work in here!! Can't commend them enough!! Every single pint&half (HANDPULL INCLUDING) were all perfect. As a barmaid myself I am rather picky but not in this establishment. Each and everyone who works in this establishment, all go above and beyond for each customer and treat everyone equally, with such beautiful manners and always a smile. Landlord & Landlady are wonderful people who welcome you in with open arms local or not. Such a warm and welcoming environment for all (including the pooches) absolutely brilliant. CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH!!! The Anchor Inn I wish I could give you beyond more stars!! Side note: The snack/crisps choice is beyond any other pub I've ever been in.

Thought we’d give it another try - wish we hadn’t. Wine by the glass is served as a screw-topped small bottle of cheap plonk. The level of sophistication here has to be endured to be believed. Never again.

Well it all depends on what’s important to you. If you want half decent food and plenty of it, the ability to pile as much veg on as is physically possible in a “I’ve paid for it so I’ll eat it mode” and after queuing with plenty whose sole aim is to do that, then this place could suit you well. The place itself is dire, badly in need of updating and just like a school or works canteen of the 60s or 70s. I am surprised that a place that looks as well healed as Whixley has a village pub like this. It is low cost and good value if that floats your boat.

The food was nice but the staff were extremely rude and discourteous. It was like they were doing you a favour by selling you a meal. Wouldn’t give us any side plates for our birthday cake and abruptly wanted us to leave once our meal had been finished so they could have the table back. It was their attitude and arrogance which was very very poor.

5 family members arrived for a 50th birthday celebration at 7o’clock. On our arrival we went straight to the bar to order and get drinks. There were no people except our family at the bar, but we felt rushed to order and pay. The meals were very good as always and were enjoyed by everyone. Unfortunately it was spoilt by 2 plates being cleared away while 3 people still had a lot of food on their plates, staff were hovering near the table while we were eating and the second our cutlery was put down they cleared the remaining plates. This also happened to our drinks and this really spoilt the evening. Needless to say we did not linger and left at 8. There was no atmosphere and no music playing. Don’t know why they opened as they obviously did not want us there. We have been going for years and felt upset at how we were treated. Disappointed, as we really love the place.

Below standard Sunday lunch, the meat was well cooked and the there were other options including a veggie option which looked great. However the veggies lacked salt and were bland, the gravy lacked flavor and needed lifting with horseradish and mustard. The beer was reasonably priced and good, however they like to serve well below the measure and needed to be asked to top my glass up twice. When you consider the other fantastic options in the area for Sunday lunch, I’ll probably not return. The only bonus is that is open all afternoon to allow some flexibility with day out

Booked a table for Sunday for us all - grandparents, parents and three children. If I say that the food tasted home cooked and the choice of menu for a Sunday Lunch was awesome, far more than you would expect for a family pub. It was a buffet style service (which did at times result in a bit of a queue), but the portions were generous and SO tasty……. Excellent value for money! The Staff were friendly and helpful and you did not feel rushed at all. Definitely well worth a visit, we will certainly be going back very soon!!!!!

We visit quite often and find that the carvery is good value for money (doing particularly well on a weekend), with a good range of dishes and vegetables. The meat was well cooked, the potatoes were well seasoned and it is nice to be able to add our own sauces. The price has increased quite a lot over the past 2 years, but is still good value with all the price rises that have impacted on restaurants. The only thing that would be helpful is to allow parties of less than 6 to book tables. We had visited for a family members birthday and wanted to book a table well in advance (in the alcove with the fireplace) but despite calling two weeks before, were told it was not possible.

We’ve been before on “pensioner’s” Tuesday. It’s so popular that people are queuing before the noon opening of the outside doors and the large car park gets full and cars park along the country lanes. And the popularity doesn’t seem to diminish. Walking along the buffet display you can see why as there is a magnificent array of dishes from which to choose. On our visit there was a choice of turkey or beef carvery, a wonderful tray bake pie, mince and dumplings, liver and onions and a fish dish as well as a veggie option. There were lots of side dishes to fill the plate. The queue at the carvery was moved along very quickly but, even so, that queue did not diminish for nearly an hour. A very quick turnaround. Plates were cleared quickly. There is a great selection of ales at the bar too. A splendid lunch in all respects

My boyfriend and I visited for a hungover carvery last Sunday and it was just what the doctor ordered. I’m not a huge fan of beef or pork on their own so the steak and ale pie was a lovely surprise. The meat was really tender and the ale gravy was very tasty. The pastry wasn’t my favourite because I prefer flakey pastry but I can appreciate that would be difficult to keep well on a carvery. My boyfriend said the pork was very good and the vegetables were cooked well. The mash was especially nice. I would have liked the cauliflower to be cauliflower cheese but I know I’m extra picky.

I cannot comment on the rooms, we only called in for dinner. Parked in the village and walked up to Brimham Rocks. After a nice walk out it was only right that we call into the local public house for a well deserved meal and beer. I will keep it simple... the welcome was polite and friendly, the beer was spot on, the menu, was varied enough, but also not that big to be confusing. The food!!.. perfect!!! We had, Royal oak burger, Hunters Chicken , and slow brazed lamb shank... All meals were fantastic, and for me.. without question some of the best food I have had while out walking in a long time. I will be returning in the future as its well worth a visit.
