A very nice warm and cosy 'proper' pub with good cask ales and friendly staff. Has kept its character and is nicely located.

Went out of our way to visit, based on web site information. Unfortunately they closed two and a half hours earlier than advertised, so declined our business. Poor form - very disappointed

Doesn't accept reservations??? Doesn't accept customers after 10pm.😲 Don't advertise you are open till 00.30 when you wouldn't serve me at 22.15. Poor form.😡

Fantastic bar , great atmosphere. A taste of old beers . Staff happy to let you taste beers before ordering. Proper old pupil house

Awful place, awful drinks, more than awful staff. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone unless you want a terrible night. Avoid unless they’re paying you to go, even then I’d question it

A historic bar but vary basic offering.

This is a lovely old bar in central Harrogate, lit by gas light. We arrived for a quiet drink at 6 pm on a Sunday.Due to live karaoke, the main bar was noisy and packed. Nothing wrong with that, we chose the adjoining bar, almost empty. Here's a note for the staff. If you have loud live music in one bar - HOW ABOUT TURNING OFF THE RECORDED MUSIC IN THE ADJOINING BAR.There was nobody to ask, and to be honest I was expecting someone to realise we were being subjected to the mashup from hell at any second, and put an end to it. It has really put me off this lovely historic bar and my hearing still hasn't fully recovered. We recorded the sound in the bar we were sat in and I am trying to sell it to the CIA to be used for forcing confessions from prisoners.

We went to this pub while we were visiting Harrogate for the Christmas markets. It is very cute and good atmosphere. We will definitely call again if we are back in Harrogate.

Had a wonderful evening all around,good menu selection . Will definitely recommend and return on my next Harrogate visit.

First visit to Harrogate and having done a google search for Harrogate gay bars the first one on the search was this bar not far from our hotel. It isn't a gay bar but it is full of character and had an excellent choice of drinks. Good prices too. Very pleasant staff and lots of atmosphere.

A CAMRA Heritage pub with a classic interior you just have to see (Main bar to the right) All the cask ales appear to be locally brewed inc the Hale’s Pale which is spot on. A proper drinkers pub - no food served.

Fantastic pub in Harrogate. Great decor and ambience with good beer choices. Visited during the afternoon, when perhaps a lot quieter than it can be. Has a reputation for being both lively and entertaining in the evenings with karaoke and other activities. Definitely a place for the open minded and adventurous!!!

This was the nearest pub to our hotel which we visited because the hotel only served bottled beers. What an interesting place this is, the gas lights on the bar, the barrels in the wall, the olde world look! A friendly barman keen to answer my questions about the pubs history. He had a pre printed sheet with some incredibly interesting information on it. Had a nice couple of pints of Theakston's bitter, before it ran out and some good conversation with a local whose dog had brought him here!! An old intriguing pub believed to be the oldest in Harrogate, worth the visit.

Food N/A as I've never had food here though this little bar in Harrogate is absolutely awesome. I highly recommend the karaoke night on a Thursday.. I believe. The atmosphere and service is fantastic!

Stumbled across this bar during an overnight stay in a nearby hotel. Warmly welcomed, friendly ambience and great to hear the history of this establishment from Suzie. Fellow drinkers were pleasant company and we look forward to revisiting when we next stay in this part of Harrogate.

Always seek out the oldest pub on our trips. Hales bar didn't disappoint. Fantastic decor, delicious ales and loads of character.

Stumbled upon the pub on a weekend away. Full of character and good beer. The staff are amazing, really go the extra mile for their customers.

A fantastic historic old pub. We had a very warm welcome by the barman Nick. A great place to sit with a pint and take in the wonderful surroundings and gas-lighting. A one of its kind rare pub. Definitely worth visiting.

Caledl in today at about 12.45 l was very impressed with the pub until l received a pint of Harrogate Amber ale which was not acceptable it was obvious the first pull from the barrel it was cloudy bar person assured me that OK and that was way it should be the bar person would not change my beer and not willing to return me.my money so buyer beware.

Atmospheric traditional pub with four or five real ales and the normal range of lagers etc. We called in on Easter Sunday and they weren't doing any food but I think they normally do.

We went here twice on our stay in Harrogate, both on a Sunday. First time it was quiet around midday but was good to have a chat with the friendly staff and have a look around the bar, which is small but a lot of character. We went back again for the live music which started at 4pm, if we hadn’t had dinner plans we would have stayed until 8pm when it finished. Defo worth a visit!

Probably my favourite pub in Harrogate. The main saloon has lots of lovely Victorian fixtures and fittings, but I actually prefer the snug next door for a cosy pint by the wood burning stove. Perfect 👌

Really enjoyed this pub. They stock nice cask ales. I had the Taylor’s Landlord Dark. The staff were lovely. Special mention to Suzie who was talking to my Mam about the time she worked with the railway. Very comfortable, old-world pub with dogs lying around. I’d happily go back, next time I’m in Harrogate.

Tonight I was accused of been smashed in hales bar, when actually I had right sided cerebral palsy and can fall or stumble when having a drink even sober. The boss took my drink off the table without speaking to me about the situation. I tried to show her as evidence with the leg brace that I wear with my foot on my leg but she would not accept or speak To me even after I went to the bar to explain this has happened on multiple bars over the years and every manager had spoken to me about it and let me in I would appreciate in the future that staff are educated on this topic. How about is people had Prosthetic leg. How would they feel and how would you feel if you were in the same situation? I understand that you weren't aware but training would be be useful to prevent situations like this. Communication is always the best and I was willing to explain.

Amazing place with a great atmosphere and friendly and welcoming staff. It's as a pub should be. They also have old gas lighting on the bar and ceiling. If you're in Harrogate you really should visit.

Visited these guys as we'd heard that karaoke was on. What a fab evening - the staff are just the best & we had an amazing evening.

Lovely ambience, even on a rainy Monday October night and place was virtually empty. This is a small bar that gets very busy during peak times. Nice to visit off peak.

This is must bar to visit when you go to Harrogate. The oldest one I believe and the interior is fantastic with gas lights! Yes gas lights! The beer is excellent and the staff so friendly, fun and knowledgeable. A great experience, we will be back.

Last twice at Harrogate, came across the pub by accident, absolutely fabulous atmosphere, service with a smile, I'm not into karaoke, but hey plenty of laughs and some fabulous singers 😀 love the place 💓

Excellent service. A band was on in the main bar. Good band, obviously crowded in main bar, so I went into the side lounge. Staff were excellent and came to see me even though I was the only one there. I couldn't see what beers they had on, so the staff member came back with a selection of tasters, fantastic!

Popped into Hales Bar, the oldest in Harrowgate after visiting the Turking Baths. Excellent beer and Sunday had an open mic which really showed some class musicians and singers.
