A great pub with a lovely coal fire , the staff are friendly and chatty and recommended an IPA which the husband tried out . We would’ve stayed longer but were on a market day trip . Would definitely go back here if in Harrogate again

Perhaps the best pint I've had in a pub, Theakstons Old Peculiar, but wow is it expensive. A pint and half a Strongbow cider, £8.50. Same pint in Wetherspoons is £2.46. Being a true Yorkshireman, guess where I was drinking Old Peculiar from then on? Also, a bit strange, you couldn't stand up and drink, outside the pub, but could take your glass 50 yards away and sit on the wall and drink it, outside some-one else's premises....

Went to this pub on a break in Harrogate, the Landlord was very friendly and the pub itself was clean and tidy with a nice open fire. The downside to this pub is the Drinks are very expensive whether it is a glass of wine, a beer or a cocktail you choose to drink. You need a big wallet to drink here. They do not serve food.

My husband and I called at the Montpellier for a relaxing drink to celebrate my 71st birthday. My husband went into the bar to order and was told he had to scan the Covid app. He replied that he didn't have his phone but would supply our details. The owner/barman snarled at him and said " No app, no drink". I took my phone inside and attempted to download the app but there was no wifi signal and no password available. I told him this and pointed out that the notice said "either scan the code or give your details." He looked at me as if I was dirt on his shoe and snarled "we don't take details. Get the app or go." This was in front of a bar full of people. I can safely say in all my 71 years I have never been shouted at, or snarled at in public. This was from someone in his early 50's who being in the hospitality trade should know better.SHOULD BE A ZERO RATING.

I will never visit this pub again. I have been going to Harrogate for years and frequent this pub every time I go either with my husbands or friends. The landlord took an instant dislike to my friends and I just for trying to sit at table outside.. He spoke to us absolutely disgusting was arrogant and then proceeded to make his own rules up about the seating arrangements, changing his mind several times as to what the rules were. There was a funeral party there at the time and he seemed quite stressed trying to accommodate them which is fair enough but he should not treat the rest of his other customers with the contempt that he showed five mature ladies. We didn't deserve to be treated the way we were and I would not recommend this establishment especially to ladies. The Licensing Officers need to take a look at this pub.

Myself and 4 lovely friends went for our first much anticipated "girly" weekend away in Harrogate last weekend following the lifting of restrictions. Just to give some context we are all professional women in our 50s. We were having a lovely time enjoying the sunshine and being together after so long apart. After enjoying a lovely lunch at the Fat Badger (which is AMAZING by the way and which we would highly recommend) we decided to have a glass of wine at the Montpellier, a pub which we have often frequented in the past. It was so warm we decided to stay outside (observing the group of 6 rule of course) We were trying to find a place to sit and we asked the landlord, Andrew, if there was anywhere we could sit. He quite abruptly and rudely suggested we "sit on the grass over the road". Well, being ladies of a certain age we of course much prefer the comfort of a chair when sipping out Prosecco and to be fair some of us might not even be able to get back up again if we sat on the grass so we stood for a while longer but then noticed there was a table near the front entrance of the pub. Right next to this on an adjacent table was a group of 6 people. As there were only 2 chairs at the table we had spied we asked people sitting at other tables if we could borrow some chairs until we managed to find 5! Brilliant we thought, a nice comfortable place to finish our drinks. About 5 minutes later Andrew, the Landlord came out of the door and said "Hey you cant sit there only 2 people allowed at that table" ??? Why? we asked politely, "Council rules" he retorted. We said, puzzled, "ok but how come there are 6 people at the next table? His response was "I don't want you here move!" which we did but of course we were somewhat affronted! To add insult to injury the next minute 8 people pulled up chairs and sat at the very same table (only meant for 2 apparently the council said?) We pointed this out to Andrew whose churlish response was "That's different they have all been to a funeral so they can have 30 people" Really? Whilst we completely respect that those people would want to be together and would have been more than happy to accommodate being told rudely that we are not welcome is not the best customer service I have ever experienced. We decided that we would leave and go somewhere where we felt welcomed (as it happened the Fat Badger welcomed us with open arms) This experience really upset us and put the dampeners on our lovely weekend and we can say with confidence we will NEVER frequent the Montpellier again nor would we recommend it to anyone else

Went to this pub yesterday with my other half, filled in the track & trace as is expected these days. Was told to go to the bar and order the drinks and they would be brought to our table. Went into the pub and ordered 2 Black Sambuca and a pint of Snake Bite. Upon on ordering the Snake Bite I was immediately informed by the manager that I could no longer be served in the pub and would have to leave. This was purely and simply due to the fact that I had ordered a pint of Snake Bite. Now please someone correct me if I’m wrong, but as a grown man of 58 years old I’m pretty sure that I’m allowed to order a snakebite if that is what I want to drink! I understand that this is a mixture of lager & cider and a little stronger than other pints that people order but at the same time it is weaker thank some lagers that you can buy on their own. Now what is the difference between me & other customers who were sitting drinking cocktails that have a various number of alcoholic spirits mixed together and are probably as strong if not stronger than my pint of snakebite. It is safe to say this is a pub that I will be avoiding from now on.

The pub operates as it has always done except there is now some sticky tape round the floor of the bar that is ignored. No contact details are taken; there are some signs suggesting giving your contact details through a pub trace website but absolutely no encouragement to do so and no attention drawn to these signs. The pub layout is such that some tables cannot be accessed without compromising social distancing but the staffs only concern was to fill these tables. The drinks were also very expensive. We will not be returning or recommend this pub based on the rude barman.

After a morning shopping in Harrogate, we needed grub and drink! Found this place and after a quick glance at the menu decided we would eat here. I have to say I've eaten Steak and ale pie many times, but none this good. And all our portions were very good sizes. Food is cooked perfectly and they serve great beers too. Old Peculier on tap is rather nice.

As a previous supporting customer, I am disgusted from my recent visit. To start with, when I entered and remarked that the owner's polishing looked nice and shiny, he stomped off and ignored me. Then the non-smiling young girl served me, practically throwing down the drink at me without any nicety. I'd been in only 1 hour, at which point the owner marched up to me declaring I had to leave. He said I'd been 1.5 hours, but I know from my watch it was 1 hour. I politely asked if he was closing early, as it was only early evening. I was just on my mobile sending a course email. He declared that "we're not an office", and offered me a refund if I left immediately, saying I'd no choice! He said you couldn't even have that long in a restaurant...Well I can say he's incorrect: in all the restaurants here I've visited, they are not hostile like this place regarding a time rule of 1, 1.5 or even 2 hours. I said let me save my email, then he questioned how long it woukd take, then I said I'd drink up and go, to which he said " No, if I'm giving you a refund you can't drink up!" What was he going to do, pour it back in and re-sell it?! I said I go all over town and no other firm give you 1 hour only before turfing you out, I think it's not a long time. He said "I think it is". I politely pointed out there was nobody else in, except a couple at the bar..." I don't care" were his hospitable words. No kidding! I'm appalled at his inhospitable manner, but as someone else on here said (just on a quick look), it's not a welcoming place. Perhaps why this guy made a new 2019 page to hide previous bad encounters. It's a shame as in the past the young guys serving on were really friendly. But this owner, bizzarely, seems keener on keeping people away. It's comparatively expensive, and the unfairness of the place in comparison with all else that Harrogate has to offer, means I am baffled at this man's choice of a career. Avoid it in my opinion; such ignorance of people is not good at all in our welcoming town.

Have eaten countless F&C; at numerous pubs & shops in my time but I can honestly say that the offering at this pub (to include the obligatory curry sauce at additional cost) was absolutely brilliant. Sizeable, the freshest fish, piping hot and delicious. Friendly service and coming from the West Country, the chance to have one of the best pints this country has on offer, a brilliantly served pint of Old Peculiar at the pump; what’s not to like.

The ambience in this pub was great. Friendly and attentive staff. I had Thai Curry and can honestly say I have never tasted anything as good in years. The people I was with enjoyed their food equally. The bill wasn't bad at all for four people. I would travel to Harrogate just to eat there - about 70 miles.

Awful service. Landlord has a real attitude problem. This used to be a busy pub in the evening and this landlord has sucked the life out of the place. Apparently he doesn’t care excuse it’s busy by day. Goodness knows why considering the tepid welcome, expensive prices and cold atmosphere. Sort it out while you have a business left.

Went here today after walking around town for somewhere to eat lunch (didn’t want a chain). So pleased we stopped here, was busy when we arrived but we found a seat, loads of choice on menu, really friendly member of staff came over and told us about some of menu choices and what had sold out etc. Did not have to wait too long for food and it was lovely! My husband had beef Yorkshire pudding wrap (see pic) was huge! I had pate, there was loads, did not finish it all! The gravy which came with yorkshire pud was so good, homemade and delicious, I had it with the chips we shared! Staff were lovely, came and checked food was ok and were attentive. Will defo go back again! Great find.

They do amazing food all home made and have great quality drinks. the Sunday roast is huge. so many people say about the price I don't see what they are on about. You get huge portions for a good price. If you want cheap and tacky try the local spoons. Be prepared for not having WiFi access but that's a small price to pay for quality food and a great environment.

I was appauled by the way myself and 8 friends were treated today in this establishment. I have never experienced such an arrogant, rude and obnoxious man in my life. We only asked if we could use the table beside where we were seated to be told ( " do what you like!") In a most appauling time! When we asked if he was sure it was ok his tone and attitude only got more aggressive. We decided to leave having not even got round to looking at a menu. ( how fortunate for a business to be able to afford the loss of takings for 9 lunches with drinks !) This man have serious issues with people skills and perhaps should not be front of house and more suited to the pot wash station. Harrogate is so beautiful and places like this just just spoil the town. If this person is the owner leave it to the staff , if you are a member of staff you should be given your p45!! Complete and utter disgrace
