A lovely old style inn with a few bedrooms, bar lounge and restaurant. The bar was well stocked with several traditional beers and ciders available including gravity fed draught bass. The food is well presented and cooked to order. Very tasty and the dining room is very pleasant. The bedrooms are well laid out , decorated and furnished. There are all the usual tea/ coffee with nice extras, a fridge, fresh milk, fruit juice.and continental style breakfast which is complimentary . The rooms are accessed via an outside set of stone steps. There is free carparking available and the bar, dining room are accessible. This inn is very dog friendly too.

Had the pleasure of spending some time at The Anchor Inn in Oldbury on Severn recently, and it was a truly delightful experience! This charming countryside pub is a gem, offering not just a cozy atmosphere however also fantastic food and drink. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. I especially loved relaxing in their tip top beer garden – the perfect spot to unwind. The Anchor Inn is a must-visit …will revisit for sure !!

Was looking forward to booking a family meal here but felt we were not welcome after an afternoon visit especially as we were told they had run out of a certain drink only for someone local to be served the same item- not very welcoming Also we were told children were not allowed inside after sitting in the garden and becoming cold! After a phone call to enquire we were advised children could come in to the restaurant For a first visit to the area, we didn’t feel welcome

I’ve been here for drinks on a number of occasions but the other day we had food, which has put me off ever coming again. Taking a small amount of frozen chips and smearing them in Thousand Island and a little grated cheese does not make ‘dirty fries’. The server brought our food without cutlery (classic) and then went back to get knives and forks when we had ordered soup and two ice creams! 🤪 Utter pelican! The bar is poorly stocked, the staff didn’t even know what an Aperol spritz was and they come across as the least engaged people to put behind a bar. It’s ok to use a few children for staff but when the whole place seems like an episode of Grange Hill you have to wonder where the adults might be hiding. I asked if the Oldbury Sheep Dip whisky was made locally and was told it was. 😆 It’s local if you live in Glasgow! 😆 They don’t allow dogs inside the pub. What year is this? My toy poodle is the size of a cat and completely well behaved. We received this information only after we had paid for drinks, of course! Finally the garden atmosphere was completely spoiled by a bloke and his 3 kids with an electric car. Total space invaders who can’t grasp that other people might want to enjoy a drink without the constant whirring of an electric motor and shouting children. Worst of it was that the guy seems to live there. I’d rather not go again - we’ve given them enough chances and they don’t get any better.

We booked the Anchor for a family meal for almost 20 of us. Having read the reviews we were very worried about whether the food would be nice but it didn't disappoint. My father in law said his roast lamb was the best he had ever had. Everything was well cooked. The puddings were delicious. The decor is old fashioned but perfectly enjoyable. Initial service took a while but the food came quickly and puddings, no mean feat for 18 of us. Perhaps they have off days, I don't know, but today our meal was lovely and we had a wonderful meal.

Have been using the Anchor for evening meals for at least 30 years if not more. Decided to take a family friend for a meal one evening early June. We have always been happy with meals served. Not on this occasion… We ordered Fish and Chips, Vegetarian Burger and Fish pie. Every one of the meals was less than adequate. The fish had been reheated a number of times and the fish coating was very dark brown and hard. The fish inside was a dark grey colour. Our friend could not really eat the fish. The vegetarian burger lacked colour and taste and looked cheap. The Fish pie was lacking in fish. The vegetables were way undercooked. We asked twice to talk to the manager but there seemed to be no one in authority on site. We were offered free puddings which we declined. We stated that it was unreasonable to pay for the Fish meal and the price was taken off our bill. We will not be back. This is a lovely old pub in an attractive setting. What has happened to the food?

We haven’t been to the Anchor to eat for some years but it always used to be very good. We visited on Sunday and I ordered fish and chips. It was not a freshly made fish and chips. It was like a frozen piece of fish just warmed up in the oven. The fish inside was a grey colour and not pleasant taste. My sister in law is veggie and ordered a ratatouille and feta bake which was inedible. It had zero flavour and topped with soggy breadcrumbs. She said she couldn’t even see or taste any feta in the bake. When we told the waitress she just said sorry and she would feed it back to the chef. She didn’t come back to offer any refund or even just offer a free dessert. Won’t ever be going back to this pub to eat. Plus very expensive. which is a real shame as it’s a very quaint country pub. Recommend getting a new chef!

*Feedback is for the meal* Four of us met for Sunday lunch at the Anchor Inn, Oldbury on 9 July 2024. Very limited menu for vegetarians with two options - standard Thai veggie burger and ratatouille and feta baked with herby crust which I chose. Completely without flavor, had to ask if they'd forgotten the feta and was told it was mixed in. Spotted some tiny (smaller than a grain of salt) specks of feta so small coukd barely see them and couldn't taste them. The herby crust was an inch or more of soggy breadcrumbs under which sat a few vegetables in tasteless liquid. This meal was inedible. We fed back to the waitress who was sympathetic and replied it's not what you want when you are paying for your meal and paying alot for it - great thanks for pointing that out but then doing nothing about it!! Expected her to pass this on and for someone to come and speak to us about it but no-one appeared. The fish and chips was very disappointing, soggy fish that seemed to be straight from the freezer not freshly battered as expected. The other two meals were OK. They were edible but pretty small portions. Overall extremely unimpressed with our meals and the lack of response to our feedback and would not recommend anyone to visit.

March 2024 and there are still only 2 vegetarian options. (None vegan). 1 of which is a Thai bean burger. Avoid ! It looks like a frozen one from asda. And tastes like it. Everyone else seemed happy with their choices. Service was great and everyone got their food at the same time. We booked for a 90th birthday lunch for 20 in March 2022. Excellent from start to finish. Food was delicious and came out all in one go, piping hot. Great variety of meat and fish dishes. However could do with more vegetarian options. Waiting staff were superb. Helpful and attentive. We brought our own cake which they were happy to bring out then plate up. Everyone had a great time. Came back on Saturday for an early evening meal (5.30pm), group of 10. Service was superb. Food delicious and we didn't wait long. Would like to see more than 2 vegetarian main options. (Went for the goats cheese starter with extra side of chips - delicious) Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the generously portioned food.

Have visited twice for a light lunch & have been disappointed both times. The starter pate with piccalilli had a very small amount of ciabatta toast, not enough for the portion of pate. A basket of bread & butter was needed in addition to the ciabatta toast. I should have learnt my lesson from ordering this starter previously. But I do enjoy pate but this recent time the underside of the pate was much darker than the rest, so it was probably the dried end piece. In my opinion this starter is not good value. No Guinness sold here. Although we frequent local pubs regularly for lunch we will not be returning.

When I asked the waiting staff what the seasonal veg were I was reluctantly told " oh, peas, broccoli, cauliflower oh and carrot I think" .. she wasn't sure and didn't go and check but stood talking to the otherstsff who were looking over at me as though I'd asked some weird question.(there never were any peas). Although the large sign outside stated that it was a Theakston pub when we asked for Old Peculiar the girls hadn't a clue. Evidently they were not a Theakston pub and had never heard of this ale! Went to visit the Anchor Inn on a Saturday evening and had a lovely meal. Sadly the mood changed after our meal as we were rushed out of the restaurant. Once we had finished our meal, the staff kept visiting our table to ask if we wanted anything else which made us feel uncomfortable and as if they wanted us to leave. The waitresses were taking drinks off our table as we were still drinking them and one of the waitresses finally said "can I get you the bill now?" Before we had time to even finish paying, the lights were turned off and the staff left. We were not asked politely to leave or to move into the bar area and it wasn't even 10pm. Very disappointed as the food was lovely but shame about the customer service.

This pub has everything you’re looking for on a sunny afternoon in the countryside (maybe all times of the year!). It was the first time we’d been for a while and it seems there have been changes (for the better) with the garden now well maintained plus a lick of paint to the main building or so I was told. Plenty of choice with drinks and food but (there has to be a but right, no one’s perfect) firstly the service was slow due to young staff seemingly happier to chat to friends in the bar rather than serve the customer, the food very nice but small in portion and our starter came at the same time as the main so you may have to say if when ordering if you like in the conventional way i.e. as a starter. All in all good place to go, but why spend all that money on the upkeep of the building and the garden and what appears to be very little on staff/staff training!!

We stayed nearby for my partners birthday in Thornbury and were having a lovely time until we visited the Anchor Inn. We went for a walk along the Severn and decided to have something to eat when we were out. We saw the pub at the start of the walk and thought we would give it a go. I popped in and spoke to a girl that was pleasant enough to ask whether we could come in with a dog. This is where the pleasantries ended. I walked to tell my partner that we could come in with the dog and walked into the drab and tired bar area. We sat down and asked for menus. The lady behind the bar with blonde hair was quite abrupt and seemed to have an attitude problem. We sat down with our drinks that were delivered with no thanks or manners. I looked through the menu and picked our food and ordered it at the bar. Again no manners. The blonde lady had an issue with my partner and was glaring at her the whole time we were there for some reason. My partner was understandably quite angry about receiving filthy looks and was ready to leave but I asked her to stay which she did under duress. Whilst we were sitting there the barmaid was talking to an elderly local gentleman in an aggressive and dismissive manner (she had a real talent for being unpleasant). So after a long wait for our food, it was delivered by who I assume was the landlord. Safe to say he didn't change our minds about how poor the Anchor is. He quite literally threw our plates on the table and then threw the pre-wrapped knives and forks alongside the plates. He muttered something about sauces but it wasn't very clear. We ate our food which was mediocre at best and left as fast as we could. I think that if you are local you may have a very different experience but if you are visiting I would recommend that you drive a bit further and go elsewhere. A thoroughly terrible place to be. They must have only had customers due to them being the only pub in the area.

We picked 'The Anchor' as it was local and it had been recommended by friends. We were advised that an early booking would beat the rush and ensure prompt service so we started at 6.30pm and were shown into the back room which is reserved for dining. It was empty on our arrival and the service was indeed prompt. There was a slight mix up with the starter but that was soon put right. I was a little disappointed that no toast was served with the terrine although crusty rolls were provided when I asked for something to spread the terrine on. Most of us had the turkey as the main course which was a generous portion, succulent and tasty accompanied with a good selection of well prepared vegetables. A variety of puddings followed, all of which were well presented and agreeably tasty. The meal was rounded off with coffee. As our meal, and the evening progressed, the room gradually filled up slowing the service to a barely acceptable level with long periods of waiting as the 2 waitresses struggled under the additional demands of over 20 more diners. A third lady helped from time to time. With the increased numbers came an unwelcome rise in background noise to the extent that conversation was, at times, a little difficult.Overall a good evening with a very nice meal with the edge taken off by slow service after a good start and an unacceptably noisy dining environment.

I hadn't eaten at the Anchor for quite a while, but a friend took me. It was quite busy being a Friday lunchtime but we found a table and placed our order at the bar, I ordered a Lasagne which was very nice not too heavy on the pasta. No problems at all. No qualms about going back.

The staff at the Anchor have excelled themselves once again with their Sunday lunch service. Piping hot, pure deliciousness delivered by very courteous young ladies. We have found the standard of food to be consistently good as is the warm welcome at this gem of a pub. One of our 'go to' venues where we can be assured of a good meal and great atmosphere.

What a delightful surprise, just a quick overnight to Bristol and I happened upon this place in the good pub guide. Inexpensive but immaculate room with a DIY breakfast that was excellent. Good beer and superb food. The service and greeting were first class, the young ladies staffing the restaurant and bar were a credit to the pub. I would go out of my way to stay here again.

A warm, sunny day at the back end of Summer. It would be nice to sit and have lunch just one more time in a lovely country pub beer garden, next to a gently flowing river.

We have been regulars at the Anchor for many years. Last time I reviewed I thought that standards had dropped, however recently we have noticed an upturn in the quality of the food. We called in spontaneously having returned from holiday that day, so they were not expecting us. Found us a table in the restaurant and served some delightfully cooked food. The duck with noodles was a great taste and the fish was exceptionally well cooked. they even thoughtfully provide half bottles of wine which are good if two of you wish to complement a meal without going for a full bottle.

Great pub with lots of choice and friendly staff. We went as an (older!) family of four and all had empty plates at the end. I have to eat gluten free and always worry about getting a decent meal. I did not read anything on their website about GF but when I phoned before, they said they could cater. I ordered leek and potato soup for starters and expected no bread. However I did have a nice GF roll. Followed by chicken with a lemon and thyme sauce with dauphinoise potatoes. All gluten free. They always brought my dish out separate to the rest of the table so I felt assured.

We went for Sunday lunch with family friends visiting from London. We had heard that the Anchor Sunday lunches were excellent. Everything was dished up on the plates and it was piled up and did not look very apertising as a result. It was all well enough cooked and there was loads of meat which was well cooked but we would have preferred a dish of veg and a jug of gravy. The meal was covered in gravy, some people don't like this and especially with cauliflower cheese.

We thoroughly enjoyed an excellent lunch with close friends. The menu covers a good selection and choice. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The location is great and is a very nice 20 minute walk to the River Severn. This is a lovely typical 'English' pub in a little village located just outside Thornbury.

It's a nice pub, dog friendly which I love as I have 3 dogs. Very disappointed to see customers there who are known by the staff with a dog on the seats. I love dogs but don't want my clothes covered in dog hair

Very meaty steak and Guinness pie with chips, petit pois and carrots. Absolutely delicious, only complaint was that the small portion was still too large and we had to leave lots on our plate. Good service and friendly staff.
