40 Maltby Street is one of my favorite spots in London. The food is hearty and the wine is just delicious. I highly recommend: everything. We waited around an hour for a table and were allowed to wait inside as it was quite windy out the Saturday we passed by. The service was just lovely, and the whole experience felt like a pleasant warm hug.

We got news that 40 Maltby Street were hosting one of our favourite chef duos Has Dac Biet- who we have eaten with at one of their residencies in Paris We came just in time for opening even though we had to rush to a theatre performance shortly after. The waitstaff were as accomodating as ever and really were super nice about getting us all our food before we had to leave! The food once again was amazing… was obsessed with the beef tartare last time from the guys in Paris but this time just levelled up! Stunning, fresh and a perfect experience. Thank you all <3

A really cute wine bar for a chill date. Reasonable prices for high quality, inventive dishes. The wine by the glass options are also funky (in a good way)! We got 5 plates and that was perfect for two people. My favorite had to be the croquettes!

Overpriced wines for the low quality. 12.5£ for a too young and acid Chardonnay from Australia is just a no! 9£ for three slices of coppa, come on! Revise your menu. Staff is also not welcoming.

40 Malby Street in Bermondsey stands out as an excellent wine bar, particularly notable for its impressive selection of natural wines. Despite a concise menu by glass, the offerings are well-curated and of high quality. The evident passion for wine from our waiter added to the positive experience. Although my friend and I only indulged in drinks this time, the enticing aroma of the food around us convinced me to return for a dining experience. The walk-in-only policy may require patience, but the charming and cozy ambiance makes it worthwhile. A definite recommendation for those seeking a quality wine bar in London.

Often when visiting a restaurant for the first time I only look at the bad reviews, and one person said the waiter was grumpy and gave this place 2 stars!! Imagine being that sort of person! LOL (as my nephew would say without irony) Rather you than me mate (grumpy reviewer not nephew). This is one of the best bars and indeed restaurants in London without a doubt. A cracking menu full of game (as it is the season) and interesting dishes backed up with a really impressive wine list (as one would expect, they're wine traders). There is nothing not to recommend about this place, the waiting staff are charming, the food is really well conceived and it was busy all night (we arrived at 6pm when it was not too busy but 30 mins later it was full). Bravo to all involved, a really impressive venue.

The hype and praise is well deserved. "Celebration" is the perfect word to describe what the kitchen does with British produce. The staff are all very knowledgeable, wonderful and helpful. There's no air of pompousness here. It's a beautiful but simple venue tucked inconspicuously underneath a train track. The food too is beautiful and simple without, I suspect, the use of tweezers. I'd recommend going with a group of 4 so you can justify ordering most of the menu.

Arrived 2.15pm on a Saturday and was immediately told that the kitchen would be closing at 3pm, with the inference we were cutting it fine for any idea of lunch. This was followed by two other staff members telling us the same information, during our short time there. Might be old fashioned, but telling a customer on arrival, when the kitchen is closing… especially when it closes unfathomably early, is not a particularly welcoming trait. Especially when all the staff seem obsessed with the fact as if this was our problem to deal with, not theirs. Wine and food very average. Dirty bar and tables left for far too long and seemed an effort to clean, we were offered a table at the back by the toilet in an empty space, when a much better table at the front was not offered because it hadn’t been cleaned. The whole vibe came across as up its own backside. 40 Maltby Street has the superiority of a high end restaurant, without the substance to back up its own attitude. Much better food options further up the street, without the price tag and snobbiness.

One of the best restaurants in London. Excellent, excellent food and they almost always have a good range of options for coeliacs and vegetarians. The food is also v reasonably priced for the quality, you can get enough food for £25-£30 each (as a vegetarian, meat/fish is pricier). Simple things done really beautifully and interestingly. The staff are very friendly. Lovely wine range, the drinks are pricier (around £10/glass) but unusual and delicious. Warning - this place is always busy, either get here early (6pm), or get here earlyish and wait for a table whilst you drink a bottle. Arriving after 8pm leaves you at risk of not getting a table.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding 40 Maltby St. and so expectations were not low, but it's wonderful when a restaurant can impress you even when you're already wary. A wonderful experience top to bottom with great wine sourcing, super fun and atypical small plates with more esoteric flavor profiles, and a cheerful staff that never left us looking around for help. Seriously, I have very little to fault with 40 Malty, especially since we managed to walk in without a wait on a Friday night. We ate as a couple, but I think it would be especially fun with a group.

The waitress who served us last night made our whole experience so joyous. Even though the restaurant was full, she went above and beyond; including putting a pudding aside for us as we didn’t want it yet but she knew they were running low. The leek fritters were heavenly, the cabbage, onion and coriander salad surprisingly tasty and the celeriac gratin was hearty and I definitely mopped up the whole dish with the continuous flow of complimentary bread. The wine (les deux terres) was fruity and delicious. The atmosphere was buzzy and you could tell all the staff really cared about the food and your experience. Would recommend to anyone!

40 Maltby Street is quite fashionable at the moment, and we did enjoy it but it wasn’t quite what we expected. The food was on the whole good (with the exception of the tomato jelly which we really didn’t like) but the seating was a bit weird- we were sat on a high table directly facing the wall instead of towards the kitchen. The service was friendly but was a bit hard to get at times. It was pretty expensive to have a full meal, as with all small plates restaurants. We ordered a cheese plate with the wine and were underwhelmed with three small pieces of cheese for £9. Had we made a mistake to come here? First and foremost the staff were awesome, we were guided through the incredible wine menu, full of so many surprises and treats. It was a set menu, an absolute joy to be given plates of perfectly considered food. The mussels in white wine sauce were some of the meatiest I’ve had, the only downside was that I needed more bread for the sauce. Following on from that was the roast beef and lightly pickled girolles. The parsley butter singing on top. So much fun. The food here is seriously well worth the visit. Forget the other small plates along the street and in Hackney which are overhyped. This is the real deal. Each of the 6 plates we had were really tasty and the only one that we did not finish was because we realised ox tongue as not our thing. The menus are up on a chalkboard but are also on their instagram for those who don't like craning their necks. Wines by the glass are limited in selection but staff are happy to recommend you off-menu ones. Staff here are lovely - they actually close at 10 but on the night we went they were making an exception for all the groups of people clearly enjoying themselves, and never once did we feel like we were being chased out.
