I may have just written the review for the restaurant by mistake. It was the pub I attended at 8:31 last night Tuesday there are only a few people in the pub about four. I arrived just before 830. Look at the menu and then go to the bar and I’m told by the Bar staff sorry Food finishes at 8:30 it was 831. I said I arrived at 8:25 and really sorry Food finished. This is why pubs and independence closed down. The staff should be ashamed of the way they look after peoples businesses.

If I could give 10 stars I would, this is the best place to visit in Stainland, I have tried the other places on the same road that also class themselves as pubs but they are nothing compared to here. Trust me don’t even waste your money in other places in Stainland, or West Vale. The food is amazing, the service is outstanding and given the current economy situation the prices are reasonable for the quality of the food and the portion sizes are the service that is given

The manager himself took us too our bedroom and explained all we needed to know. Very friendly and chatty.. A Lovely clean modern bedroom and bathroom, the bed and pillows were really comfy, had a great night's sleep. The staff were were friendly and helpful.. Had an evening meal in the restaurant, despite being very busy we didn't have too wait long for our food, which was absolutely delicious. We ordered fish chips and peas, the portions were really generous, piping hot and the fish was huge, lovely crispy batter.. The waitresses were really polite and friendly.. Next morning we had breakfast which was freshly cooked, and very tasty, again the girls serving breakfast couldn't do enough for you.. A really fabulous stay and definitely our go too place to stay on our next visit to Halifax..

We attended a function ad 1885, and stayed overnight. The pub itself is pleasant and the beer is good, with a couple of decent draft beers from Elland on tap. Staff were helpful and friendly. We enjoyed our time at the function - often function rooms can be poorly situated but this is served by its own bar and facilities so great for a private party. We stayed in room 6 - the rooms aren't large and there is a little noise leakage between rooms, but they're perfectly well supplied and comfortable. In terms of value for money we could not ask more. Breakfast was included in the room rate, and was very good. Plenty of choice, served quickly, and great quality.

Lovely place to stay. Room was spotless very comfortable, had a brilliant nights sleep. We had tea in the beer garden and it was beautiful, the steak pie was packed with meat and was delicious, husband opted for chicken burger which again was beautiful. Staff lovely very attentive, (a bit of me will miss the table service for drinks, when pubs open up). Breakfast in a lovely bright setting again cooked to perfection, even went to the trouble of asking if my bacon was cooked enough before serving. Staff again friendly attentive. I would totally recommend 1885 to anyone, no aspect could be faulted in our view

It is quiet some time since I ate at 1885 & 1st time at 1885 the Pub and i have to say the rump steak was beautiful, thick, juicy, tender & rare, cooked to perfection, full of flavour just how steak should be. It was accompanied with chips - crispy and firm, grilled tomato and a splendid caesar salad... The red wine was not bad, not full bodied but a little fruity number with a pepper after taste. I have no problem in recommending this meal to any steak lover. The two girls who were front of house where happy, smiling and chatty just right for this pub..

The place was warm and welcoming and the staff were friendly and efficient. The food was nicely presented, good portion size and very tasty. There were fish and vegetarian options as well as the standard Sunday roast. There were also a variety of drinks behind the bar. We were all very happy. I would definitely recommend. Visited on a Sunday evening and was given a very warm welcome from the chap behind the bar who showed us to a table. It was a lovely inviting environment, and all of the waitresses were very pleasant too. However, we didn't mention it at the time because everyone was busy, but a number of the high table stools were coming apart so need repair or replacement before someone falls off one of them. The food we chose was lovely-a mushroom burger and a butternut squash risotto from the specials board although there wasn't much else vegetarian and I didn't spot anything vegan. Will definitely visit again but would like to see more vegetarian options on the menu

Great meal with friends. The food is terrific. Beautifully cooked and presented. The problem - way, way, way too much. Is that a problem? It is if you're left feeling guilty about not eating most of what's put in front of you.A genuine complaint is that we were encouraged to order vegetables with dishes that then appeared that did not need extra vegetables. The club salad starter was a serious main course, which we saved to go with the main course...and then it was not needed. Great cooking...but there are times when less is more (probably like this review)

A large group of us had booked a table in the pub (not the restaurant) at 1885, Stainland, Halifax. It's undergone a make-over in recent years and they are still adding on to the building work, but this was not a problem. The bar has lovely décor and a great friendly atmosphere. Despite the fact that it was a busy Saturday in summer, we were served and attended to very, very well and quickly. Some people had starters and a main, others a main and a dessert - you'd think this would have cause some problems or delays, but no, the staff handled it all in their stride and food arrived without promptly and all together. We all found the food to be excellent. Portions were on the large side (bear that in mind when ordering!) and there was a great selection to choose from even though it wasn't a massive menu. Everyone in our party really enjoyed their meals and we all left feeling full and contented. Will definitely return to eat again or even just for a drink!

Called in for Sunday lunch - not too busy. A decent menu and good prices. Made the mistake of going for the roast beef when we should have gone for the fresh fish. The meal arrived remarkably quickly...perhaps too quickly. The veg was perfect, the Yorkshire pudding excellent and it came with extra gravy, which is all good. The beef, though, was a let-down - very stringy. But dessert more than made up for it - a rich chocolate tart with amazingly thin pastry...beautiful. Someone in this kitchen can cook and is clearly making an effort. Well worth another visit.

We have eaten here many times before as a family and always enjoyed it, tonight was an exception. My partner had a salad - he was the lucky one, with the best meal of the evening! I had scampi and chips - when I’d finished the scampi I discovered a slice of lemon buried under the chips upon which the scampi was served. The scampi was ok, I wouldn’t choose it again, but it was edible. Our daughter had a child’s lasagne, it was horrible and none of us could eat it.

The menu was enticing and the food was good quality and value for money. The seabass main was a very large chunky piece of fish, cooked to perfection. The pheasant was plentiful, although a little overcooked. Service was excellent. A very pleasant young man appeared to be running the bar, waiting on and clearing tables all on his own. The decor was slightly worn here and there but nothing a coat of paint could not put right. Unfortunately, it was quite chilly in the seating area, so we did not linger. My mum lives in a small village in Halifax called Stainland. This popular village has 3 pubs, all serving food, but 1885 The Pub is by far the best and I try to eat here whenever I visit mum for the weekend. On my last visit I was unaccompanied as mum already had plans. As I am quite happy to sit with my kindle or people watch this wasn't a daunting prospect. It was also made easier by the friendly and attentive staff. As a lone customer they regularly - but not too regularly to be intrusive - checked if I required anything. I had taken a seat by the wood burner and was content to watch people come and go and dip in and out of my book and facebook on the kindle - there is free wifi. When I did decide to eat I chose the three course Sunday lunch option, which has quite a wide selection of options for £17.95.For my starter I chose the Crispy Brie with Fruit Chutney. A simple but delicious starter of deep fried bread-crumbed brie with a delicious 'secret recipe' chutney (I think it has figs in there somewhere!).My main course was the Pheasant Breast with Sweet Potato Mash. Served with sides of bacon and lemon and garlic butter the main is also accompanied with a small metal le creuset style casserole dish filled with your roast and new potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The pheasant is sourced locally (as are many of the ingredients) and was delicious, juicy and tender. For dessert I chose the delicious Chocolate Mousse with Sesame Cracknel. While delicious I did find find the cracknel a little thick and therefore hard to munch! This was accompanied by a bottle of Botter 2011 Pinot Grigiot at £17.95. (Yes, a whole bottle to myself - but I was there for 3 hours!)Service was friendly, efficient and unhurried and the afternoon passed with with absolute pleasure. The decor of the pub is a sort of rustic shabby chic, utilising pale grey and sage green 'heritage' colours. There are four distinct areas in the venue, the bar area with bar stools and standing space (sport is shown on a large tv but not at a volume that is intrusive) and three eating areas, two of which are separated by a dual aspect wood burner.Every effort has been made to make the Pub accessible and wheelchair friendly, with a slope/ramp from the entrance to the bar and eating areas. Unfortunately this is not matched by the local authority outside, however I don't see how narrow pavements could be improved as the roads are also narrow. The Pub is situated on a small but steep hill, so if you are a chair user I would recommend parking in The Pub's carpark. If you are 'on foot' you would need a power chair for the incline or a very strong friend to assist you in a manual chair. After my lunch I retired to the bar area where the friendly locals and staff included me and engaged me in conversation. Also within this complex of buildings are an A La Carte restaurant, function suite and hotel rooms. I have not used these facilities, but seeing them on the website and knowing the level of service you receive in the Pub I can only imagine they are excellent. All in all an absolute must visit if you are in the Halifax / Huddersfield area, If you fancy a drive out, Stainland is easily accessible from the M62 making a trip from Leeds or Manchester a very straightforward option.

Really nice warm welcome from the bar staff but the food which was not cheap was substandard. The lasagne was a bowl of spaghetti sauce very strong tomatoe and no other flavour but there was minimal pasta, definitely an absence of pasta sheets. My theory is the kitchen junior was tasked with pub meals cos the real chef was working on restaurant meals. The burger was over cooked and had little flavour. This place needs to keep its eye on the ball with many new places to eat creeping up behind them close by offering better value for money. Such a shame the staff are lovely and the place is nice.

1885 review Woodford set on pastures new for the first time in a while. With their usual tendency to eat at trusted establishments in the local vicinity it was "shiny Charizard"rare to find the two hungry foodies in Stainland for their Saturday night meal. 1885 was the venue of choice, with the pub rather than the restaurant selected. Woodford we're not alone in this dining quest, it's fair to say that with the fire roaring and MOTD coming up on the box it was only with company that persuaded Woodford to brave the November night air and travel to Calderdale for tea. Ford's parents and brother making up the table of 5.1885 it's self was a smart establishment. A log fire in the middle of the pub took to wood's eye giving him a home from home feel where he had left his roaring burner and sofa groove to re-plump itself while he inhaled on more food. A decent pub menu made difficult choosing for Ford, she 'narrowed' her selection to 7 different dishes and had it not been for Ford's mum stepping in to offer he a half and half swap deal we may still be there now. Wood was at his decisive best and nailed down lasagne and chips almost on entry, Ford ending up with a half a burger and half a hot beef sandwich. The food came in a decent amount of time and got the nod of approval aesthetically from all 5 diners. A special note must be added here to the size of the fish and chips Ford's brother was tasked with. This was a whale had beached itself on a shore of think hand cut chips from a sea of mushy peas, it was a plate of epic proportions. The lasagne, hot beef and burger were all of a good Standard in both quality and quantity. All 5 diners polished off all the food they were presented with and all were happy with the evenings meal and the service of the staff. The bill for Woodford as a couple touch over £35 that you certainly can't grumble at. 1885 gets the nod with quality pub grub at a decent price.

I have done a few pub quizzes in my time but there are none much better than the pub quiz at 1885. There is an entry fee of £2 per person and for this you get a lovely home made supper with a vegetarian option. The quiz is four rounds of 10 questions with a prize of a £25 gift voucher to use in the pub to the winning team. After finishing the supper I was taken back to the 80s with a game of play your cards right which cost £2 to enter. A really great Monday night out well worth a visit for any budding pub quizzer and I was home and tucked in bed by 10.30.

Had Sunday lunch here with my family and I can't praise it enough. The food was excellent and very good value for money. The atmosphere was fantastic and the staff were very polite and couldn't do enough for us. Would definitely recommend it.

Have visited here in the past but can seriously say that it's changed....!! The pub carpet is disgusting. The tables have been thrown together and your sat on each others knees. The carpet just needs ripping up and replacing. It's stained and puts you off the food. So the food. Now that's also changed for the worst. The price of the Sunday special had gone up .. but value for money. The number of choices has been reduced The soup was over powered by mint. And left a funny taste in mouth. Didn't enjoy the food. The beef was ok but vegetables coming in a pathetic small metal pan is a waste of time. Shame as this was once a nice place. Will carry on driving next time and find a hearty pub for Sunday dinner. Like I said the carpet is discussing. Filthy filthy filthy. Expensive. Dirty. Trendyless pub

We were a group of 12, so lot to cater on.We all had the various sandwiches off the menu. Wow - the food was amazing, good portion size and although you think steep, for what you get it was worth it.The atmosphere in the pub was very good and the staff were very friendly. I would definitely recommend to anyone nearby visiting here for a bite to eat and drink.Shame more places are not like this as it is just what people are after.

Title speaks for itself. Pub feels welcoming informal but still with an air of "this is a nice place to be!". Wish it was our own local :) Great choice of drinks too.

We stayed 2 nights in the guest rooms celebrating our wedding anniversary. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with a large modern shower room. Tea and coffee making facilities as expected. The continental breakfast was first class. Croissants, jam, yoghurt, juice, ham, salami, cheeses and tomatoes. cereals and homemade chocolate cereal bars ideal to take with us on our long walks Lovely presentation in a hamper. We ate in the restaurant and the pub and on both occasions the food was excellent. Lovely weather whilst we stayed so enjoyed having a drink outside in the pleasant seating area. Good beers. Can't say a negative thing, they have it right. Llook forward to returning

Arrived at the pub on a busy Saturday night, straight away the atmosphere made us all look forward to our night ahead. Although the staff were very busy we were attended to straight away and with a smile. There was a large choice from the menu's and it all sounded delicious. I kept it simple and went for the large fish and chips, WOW, and large it was. Batter was perfectly crisp and was served with homemade chinky chips, my favourite. By far the best fish and chips I've ever had. All the rest of the party said there food was also delicious, very big compliments on the steak and ale pie. To our delight, the pub had cocktails on offer at 2 for 1, well, that was us set for the night. We tried the whole array of cocktails and they were all very tasty but porn star martini has to be the groups favourite (all though our new favourite bar man Will does make a very good old fashioned)Definetly will be new regulars at this pub.

we ahd been looking forward to our visit to the 1885 the pub . the pub itself is very pleasant and mainly set up for diners. the staf were also pleasant and very helpful. i had booked earlier in the week but given a squashed up table sat on buffets not what i would of expected . we chose our food and we were served promptly. unfortunately my soup was far too salty for my liking but i persevered and ate it. our second courses came unfortunately again salt had been added by the bucket load it would seem ,serving chips and added salt in the kitchen is a no no for me. let me choose please.my wife had the meat pie and again the pie and the crust was over salted . we had to leave our meals unfinished. i did mention the over saltyness to the staff before we left and to the waiter hopefully someone will pass my thouhts on

I have been a couple of times now to 1885 the pub, every time I have really enjoyed it and so have my friends. So much so I took my family on a Sunday, I didn't realise the menu is very limited and totally different on a Sunday. We were disappointed that we couldn't choose from the usual menu but we all had a roast dinner. It was lovely and it won't stop me going back. In fact I'm due to go again soon!

Stumbled across this place whilst following the sat nav to Shibden Hall. What a find! Family of 5 from 87 to 11 and something to suit everyone. Amazing food and very prompt, efficient and friendly service. My mother in law had misread the menu and ended up with a dish containing smoked salmon which she hates but they swapped it no problem. Order the small fish unless you have the most enormous of appetites. 'Fish butty' should be renamed 'whale butty.' Loved this place and we'll definitely be back despite it being 15 miles from home.

Haddock fish curry served on a banana leaf isn't always what comes to mind when you think of Sunday lunch. But it's so tasty. I like that they give you a little jug of extra sauce- and a pot of vegetables too.My partner was mightily impressed with the roast beef and all the trimmings. It's a great place for a family get- together.

The place has a right cold and uncomfy feel, like a school cantren. Probably a good concept for afternoon tea or lunch but not an evening meal. Booked a table well in advance for a birthday, but wasn't in the diary so good job it was quiet! The staff were all very young and as nice as they were didn't seem very experienced and made a number of mistakes (apart from the girl who was lovely and very helpful) .Food was very generously portioned , if you are going for the large fish and chips then you definitely don't want to be having a starter. One of the meals had to be sent back as it wasn't as described in the menu (added extras that someone was allergic to) and another meal had to be sent back for different reasons. The rest of the meals were enjoyable .

We visited last month for the Tuesday deal 2 steaks and 2 glasses of wine for £25. The steak was beautiful, cooked to perfection and huge! Served with home made chips and onion rings, flat mushroom and a sauce. Service was spot on and the wine was really nice. Would definitely recommend to anyone and such a good deal! Can't wait to go again.

Boxing Day fun run was very well organised & a fantastic turnout considering the weather. The pub spoiled the occasion by roping off half the seating area . You would think for a couple of hours they could accommodate the charity runners ! Not impressed !

Called here on a sunny Sunday afternoon after checking into our accommodation close by. Great beer, great decor and fantastic staff. We sat in the sunshine and had a lovely chat with Laura, who we will definitely meet up with soon. We didn’t want to leave this lovely place but unfortunately we had other plans for the evening.

Cracking service by the staff out front, shipping order in front of us and they sorted rather than us being sat for ages. Great Sunday lunch, 1 pork and 1 gammon. Fixed price menu for 1, 2 or 3 courses. Grand way to celebrate 18 million views of food on Google

Not been in to Yates for a while, but I was so glad that I went in. I got to see one of my old friends back behind the bar, Samantha, or Boo as she is known. So glad to have her back home. Will be coming back more often.
