Great service from the team and a really lovely view out of the castle window whilst having breakfast. However, the food was awful. We had a full English breakfast and everything was just bland, the bacon was overcooked and the sausage was pitiful, the bread was also incredibly thin. It tasted as it if were made using super cheap products as opposed to the locally sourced farm referenced. We’re incredibly surprised and equally disappointed. In addition, as I hardly ate my breakfast I went to check out the pastries which were overcooked …… or burnt.

Setting was beautiful. Building was incredible. Hotel room was shoddy, shower was broken and hurled water all over the bathroom. The paint was peeling in the bathroom. Windows filthy. Carpet taped to the floor, showing the shower has been behaving like that for a while. As it seemed to be the cause of the carpet needing to be tapped down. We were booked in for the sample menu a process that took 3 calls over 3 weeks with the final call being 3 days before. The reason we chose to go here in the first place. We sat down to be told they don't do that. Options then are 4 uninspiring starters and the same for mains. Amuse-bouche was bread and butter. Delicious but let's face it it's bread and butter. Always a little concerning when you get half a loaf and butter as an amuse-bouche. Starters were awful I wanted to cancel the mains but the rest of the party said we would try. Options for mains, 4 more uninspired dishes that were essentially slow cooked meat and potatoes of some description with the only other available side being parsnips. They were cold and tasteless as was the rest of the mains. Felt like someone whose never cooked before and can't really be bothered having a go at fine dining. The table next to us waited an hour for starters, soup and pate. The pate was left uneaten after the first taste. Our own waits for courses was similar. We went to the cocktail bar. Great location really interesting room. I like a dark cosy cocktail bar but our table was fully pitch black and given the price and the garbage from the kitchen decided to mix our own back at the room. Asked for a bucket of ice for the room. Got back to the room. Ice bucket was full of holes and leaked water all over the table. Transferred the ice to glasses and the bucket that was full of holes was filthy so just threw the icy away too. Whoever is in charge here does not care. They are living of the beauty of the building and instead of doing it credit they just don't care. This is not an exhaustive list but you get the gist.

Dined here with my wife and was extremely disappointed. We ordered cauliflower soup which was tasteless and the texture of semolina. Not what we were expecting for £8. The chesse scone accompanying the dish was not bad but so small it was laughable. Main dish was the vegetarian option at £17. One very small undercooked onion in burnt, greasy pastry, one nearly raw carrot and green puree that didn't taste of anything. The service was slow bordering on stop. The waitress was surly and couldn't even force a smile. Come on Mark Burke I have seen lots more interesting dishes on amateur master chef

Elnar & his team couldn't have been more hospitable and the quality of the food was exceptional and good value. We were married here back in 2010 and it was incredible from start to finish; we think the quality of the restaurant and the surroundings continue to improve year on year - its a stunning location and worth a visit!

Sunday Lunch at Peckforton - So the location is not the easiest to find but with the aid of Sat Nav we made it to the entrance okay. The Castle is not that old, in fact my previous house was the same age 1840ish. It looks fantastic and there is a semi dry moat around the Castle. The car park is a muddy clearing (so ladies - high heels are not possible) entrance is poorly signposted and we ended up initially in the Land rover experience. Having made it into the correct entrance we were shown upstairs to a mostly empty restaurant and sat in the window. It is single glazed and there was a minor draft but no issues. Off the very limited menu, my partner had a Soup Starter which was fine, however they didn't bother the bring the bread roll which we asked for, then they didnt bring the butter which we asked for. Onto the mains, a pork and a beef. The pork and stuffing was lovely but the "slow cooked" beef was red, rare, thick, leathery and hard to cut. It looked as if it had been in the oven ten minutes. Slow cooked it was not. It was also cold as was most of the vegetables. I say vegetables but using the plural is a misleading menu phrase as there only was a one sliver slice of carrot and two minute florets of broccoli. That was it! Bugger all veg and a cold tough uncooked main, which was slightly warmed by too much gravy. I shared my pork to compensate for my partners disappointment. The food had it been cooked for another two hours (after all it was slow cooked allegedly), and if there had been even two full carrots and a normal portion of broccoli could have been ok. Pudding was a disappointing lukewarm Stick Toffee Pudding. We complained to the waitress when she disinterestedly asked how our our meals were and said the chef was made aware of our comments. The manager was oblivious to our complaint or never mentioned it when he passed. We also asked for our drinks not to contain ice but as expected this was ignored so we removed all the cubes from our glasses. Frankly the staff for whatever reason are not trained or motivated to provide a usual level of service. The restaurant could improve massively with better QC and management. Afterwards we found the bannisters were wrapped in Christmas decorations thus defeating the safety aspects which is why they are there in the first place. If we have known there was a nice room behind the reception it could have been used for coffees, no attemt was made to advise how we could see the rest of the castle which i would have been interested in so we headed off never to return I suspect!

Our Sunday lunch was below expectations considering the prestigious venue. We both had the roast main course & dessert. Small portions with minimal vegetables…..one slice of carrot, a few florets of broccoli and some roast potatoes. We were not asked if we needed any condiments with our main course. String left in pork was mentioned to the waitress but no feedback or apology given by the chef. The main course was however well presented, tasty & well cooked. Desserts, although delicious, were small portions & looked lost on the plates. Ice cream /cream was needed to accompany the lemon tart & chocolate delice. After waiting 25mins for dessert plates to be removed we got up from our table, to pay and leave without having coffee as we’d planned to.

I had booked Sunday lunch at Peckforton Castle as part of our 40th wedding anniversary celebrations. I had forgotten that I had mentioned it was our anniversary when I booked, so it was a lovely surprise when we were shown to our table, by the window, to find an anniversary card and balloons, much to my wife's delight. Service was excellent, professional, polite and attentive without being overbearing. The food was very good. I have to be honest when the starter was served, I did think I would probably leave the restaurant hungry, however after 3 excellent courses I was more than satisfied. Thankyou for an excellent start to a month of special anniversary treats.

We went for dinner here on a fine summer evening and the drive up to the castle through the woodland was lovely. The car park is actually in the wood and a five minute walk to the castle. We arrived half an hour before our meal but there was no one on reception and we had to go hunting around the rooms before we found 3 staff chatting in the brasserie. We had a drink here then went up to the restaurant. We were comfortably sat by the window and had a great view of the wedding party getting their photo's taken. The restaurant was nicely decorated, wasn't full, service was prompt and friendly. Food was beautifully presented, and delicious. Despite the surroundings, it felt as if there was something missing by way of atmosphere. We spent over £100 for the two of us including drinks which is way more than we we usually spend. For the quality of food offered, I feel there needs to be something more happening here by way of ambience.

We've eaten all over the world, in multiple Michelin star restaurants, yet this was one of the best meals we've ever eaten. Normally we go for tasting menus but this was a standard 3 course 'fixed price' menu, yet they were happy for us to both order two starters each and only one of us have a dessert. There were plenty of vegan options for my wife but this way we both got to taste a few more flavours. First we had an amuse bouche and bread, then for starters we shared a wonderful tomato soup, cauliflower with truffle and an artichoke starter - I also had the chicken ravioli. Maybe I'm used to smaller tasting menu portions but these were decent sized and gave you more chance to taste the array of flavours in each dish. For her main my wife had the vegan potato black garlic and onion dish, beautifully presented and full of intense flavours, the potatoes having been sliced down to their base to allow the coating to infuse them. I'm taking her word for this because I didnt get a look in ! My main was chicken with a langoustine ravioli, a decent size for a fine dining restaurant but cooked perfectly and again bursting with flavour. My wife had a glass of port but I had the chocolate desert - another work of art and it rounded off the meal perfectly. Service was friendly and efficient, the room was great, the wine was decent enough and not too expensive, but the three course meal for £30 was simply incredible value. Some options had small supplements but we've paid double for food half as good. It really was perfect. We're already making plans to come back. Can I give six stars?

First time visit this evening to the restaurant for a meal and it did not disappoint. Myself and my husband took my mum for her belated birthday gift and we all agreed it was the best meal we have eaten in a good few years. The quality of the food, the presentation of the food and ALL of the staff was just perfect. My mum rarely eats a full meal and she ate everything, all the courses. I have to say the brown roll mum was given tastes just like the bread we had as children, just incredible. The only thing I was upset about was I couldn’t leave a tip added to the bill. We have just got so use to going out and not taking cash we didn’t even think. I just want to pass on my thanks to everyone that served us, you were all so lovely and I am so sorry we could’t leave a tip, you were all so nice.

A much delayed visit to this restaurant did not disappoint. Having read other reviews I was concerned that this would not meet expectations but this was unfounded. All three courses were excellent. Granted the main course needed a side dish to be complete, but this is nothing unusual. We chose Spiced Lentil Soup, Belly Pork with Mustard Mashed Potato and Eton Mess for my wife and Chocolate Brownie for myself. The service was paced just right for me and friendly, the ambience in the restaurant relaxed. Well worth taking the time to travel to this venue.

I must stress - the taste of the food we were served was excellent - as was the presentation. The environment in the castle is lovely & the tables are roomy & well set, linen napkins etc. However, the food was not hot on arrival. I did mention this on our first night, & chef immediately served me another 'mini meal' which was hot, & equally as tasty. The portions are not huge, but we found them adequate & didn't leave hungry. The wine list is good & for a hotel reasonably priced.Staffing was lacking on our first night, but better on our second meal there, & the senior staff member, Ellen, was excellent on both nights, but her staff were in the main not up to the task - either too new or simply not good enough to support her, or not enough staff in the first place - so she was having to keep on top of everything herself. We were on an inclusive package so I can't comment on prices, but we had 4 choices per course with good variety.I must stress again the taste of the food was excellent, & we gave our compliments to the pastry chef for his Chocolate Pebble! Hot food & better trained (& enough) staff & this would be a top notch restaurant.(Although in a castle & on the first floor there is a stairlift allowing access if required)

I visited 1851 this week with 3 friends for dinner under a Travelzoo offer. Perhaps that was the reason we received such poor service. The problems started from the very beginning when we had to wait for about 5 minutes before anyone appeared to seat us. We then ordered and the drinks and first courses arrived, which were fine, nicely presented and quite tasty. 2 of the main courses however were served in cold dishes which made the fish contents lukewarm. We returned one of the dishes which was then served slightly warmer, but not hot. I myself persevered with my lukewarm offering as I don’t care to send food back to a kitchen as you hear so many horror stories about what can happen.....As we dined no one appeared to enquire about the food, which incidentally was lukewarm but ok, nothing very exciting, the best that could be said was that the fish portions were of a decent size for a change. We completed the main courses without having been troubled by any staff to see whether we would like another drink or any more water. The deserts were served and again, my panna cotta was just ok, nothing to write home about, it looked great, but that was about it. We were then totally abandoned, no one came to clear our table or offer us coffees, so we left. Naturally we didn’t leave a tip as we were so underwhelmed by the service. As we left the Castle we noticed that a function was in full swing elsewhere, and we then wondered whether this was the reason the service was so lacklustre. Anyway, we won’t be back to try again, but we did wonder why they bother using Travelzoo, if they then don’t capitalise on the dinners when they arrive by offering further drinks and coffees. They seem to be missing a trick there.

Oh dear what a disappointment! It sounded so promising. I’ll set the stage. We booked and were picked up by the chauffeur service that the castle provides when you eat in the 1851 restaurant. Steve our driver was lovely and very professional. We arrived at the castle on time and what a sight it looked magnificent all lit up and very Christmassy.Steve showed us to the restaurant....so far so good. And then that is where the service ended....yes just like that!!!We were not greeted for quite a few minutes. Eventually a young lady showed us to our table. Now bearing in mind this was at 7.00pm 3 weeks before Christmas and there was only 4 tables occupied (that should have set alarm bells ringing) so there was very little atmosphere. We were then presented with a table d’hote style menu with about 4 choices for each course which surprised us as we thought it would be a super menu for a restaurant which purports to be a quality restaurant. We ordered our food and wine but once the food and wine arrived we didn’t see the waitress at all. We had to call a member of staff over to ask for the wine list which was delivered when we had nearly finished the meal and then nobody came to take the wine order. After the meal we asked for Armagnac and coffee to served downstairs in lounge. That took absolutely ages to come and then the waitress appeared to say she had hunted all over the castle but there was no Armagnac. The coffee came with no spoons and one of the cups had no handle and turned out to be a sugar bowl. There was a wedding in that night and the castle is a very big wedding venue. But these places have to make up there mind what they want to be you either are a wedding venue and don’t try to run a restaurant at the same time or you get more staff in. Conclusion. The food was excellent and extremely good value....applause to the chef. But the service was diabolical with not enough trained staff, no maitre’d, no sommelier and a couldn’t care attitude. My tip would be make sure there is no wedding on when you book and you may hopefully have a completely different experience.

Well this is my second visit here to sample Jason hodnett's food !! Last year was joyfully great !! This year was definitely a little under par !! Which has shocked me and disappointed me...Last time we had a choice of a taster menu ! This time we just had the 3 course menu choice. So i told my brother-in-law will have two starters, one main, and 2 desserts just to try out a few things on the menu!! Having saying this to the waitress and we was given the reply of "sorry I don't think you're allowed to do that" ?????? Then having to explain to the waitress that I've been to some restaurants where I do this, then she had to go to the kitchen to us the head chef if it was ok for us to do this and have this many courses !! To which i known the reply would of been OK, which was said when she come back!!!So first to come was the complimentary bread and butter! The bread was ok not the best of breads of had !! First course...Duck tamarind breast + whipped liver parfait + chicken skin + pineapple..I like to point out that this was a cold starter. I cannot fault the cooking of the duck breast was nice and pink and tender and flavoursome the liver parfait was flavoursome and well made, but the quenelle of it look well sloppy !! With texture from a great crispy chicken skin & sweetness from the pineapple tasted good !!! But the plating of the dish wasn't the greatest Second course...Heritage tomato + smoked goats cheese + mint tapenade + pimento..Now this was definitely a cracking starter beautiful quality tomatoes!! The saltiness this from the tapenade brought out the flavour of the tomatoes with beautiful tasting goats cheese with a nice hint of smoked flavour !! This was definitely great Third course...Lamb rump + English peas + onion textures..The cooking of the Lamb and the taste of the lamb was Flawless !! With a great charred onion and baby onions !! With an onion seed tuile, which to me was tasteless and pointless to be an element the plate????? This was a a tasty lamb dish but I'm afraid to say I've had better tasting lamb dishes else where !!! Maybe there was way to much onion textures on there ???Fourth course...Vanilla whipped panna cotta + lemon curd + shortbread..This was a great dessert great taste and texture in the panna cotta with lovely Sharpe taste from the lemon curd, and a crunchy crumb shortbread with fine slices strawberry !! Definitely a winner Sixth course...Strawberry cheesecake + compote + crème fraiche sorbet..This was a good tasting cheesecake !! Its wasn't and outstanding one !! I must admit that it had a absolutely good wobble !! But sadly the sorbet was melting fast, i wouldn't had minded if it was a very hot might but it wasn't !! And by the time i got halfway through the cheesecake I just had a poodle of sorbet i pick this because if you're going to put a cheesecake on a menu its got to be a dam good outstanding one..... Just seems the dishes was better on last years visit !! And at a 3 AA rosette restaurant it just seemed to be lacking some what this year....Will i be back in the future again ??? Yeah most probably !!!

Good quality, attentive service, the £25/head set meal , we thought, represented good value in an AA starred restaurant.

Firstly the positives , lovely restaurant and the food was very tasty and service was good.Negatives- for a three course set meal the portion sizes were disgraceful.. They were the size you would expect as part of an 8 course tasting menu, of which we have had many. My wife’s starter consisted basically of a croquette with a few bits, mine was slightly larger. For main we both opted for the lamb which was lovely but consists of 2 small pieces of lamb ( I would guess at 50g ) a few peas and a smear of pea purée with an action man sized pot of slow cooked lamb. The whole meal lasted less than an hour start to finish. Also for fine dining we are used to having our wine topped up through the meal not left to fend for ourselves. Having had lunch in The Brasserie earlier in the day we were much more satisfied by that experience than the Siniture Restaurant of the Hotel which was the whole purpose of our visit.

Anniversary visit (21 years to the day since we were married at Peckforton, whoever took the booking said that they had made a note of this, but no mention on the day). Ambience was poor with strange acoustics which meant that some neighbouring conversations were very loud. Staff were poorly trained and inattentive, once we had ordered we were not asked if we wanted anything else, no offer of extra water once our bottle was empty. Gap between main and dessert was so long that we felt forgotten, and then took ages to get the bill. Food was very ordinary, small portions and quite bland, a triumph of presentation over substance. Bass starter was over-cooked as was the very small portion of lamb. Overall a very disappointing experience as I was expecting something a lot more polished and sophisticated given the surroundings. Still a beautiful venue for a wedding but will not be returning again to eat or recommending to friends. Such a shame.

Meal was OK nothing to write home about. I didn't taste anything that I would have ordered again. If you are staying at this hotel don't go when there is a wedding on because you cant use the bar. Why would you stay in a Castle, order a fabulous dinner and then not have use of a bar or lounge to relax in after dinner. You could sit in the Brasserie (cafe) but only had tables and chairs not comfy armchairs. This place needs new management - and don't even go in the Spa

Our family of 6 ate in this restaurant 3 times whilst staying in the Castle. On the 2nd night we were joined by another 8 family for a birthday celebration. The only complaint we had was that 5 people chose Sirloin steak and they were almost inedibly tough. Not wanting to ruin the atmosphere we said nothing to the waiter and also the rest of the food over the 3 nights was impeccably good. The staff are fabulously friendly and nothing is too much trouble, they made the celebration very special.

Nice decor, good ambience. Very efficient and pleasant waiters and waitress. The food was fresh, nicely presented. The salmon starter was a strange combination of ingredients pickled cabbage and flaked almonds was not to my liking .The beef main course the flavours of the vegetables and jus were divine. The desert with a ganache like truffle on top was absolutely delicious.

We had dinner here last night as we were staying at the hotel and it was absolutely perfect, the staff are so friendly and knowledgable and the food is amazing, we ordered from a £25 set menu, I am one of the fussiest people when it comes to what I like to eat but everything was amazing, a beef starter followed by Duck which was cooked perfectly and tasted Devine followed by a dark chocolate mousse which finished off the meal perfectly. The staff are perfect they know when to approach the table and when not to to check you are enjoying your meal. Can’t wait to return.

Wanting to try somewhere different from the usual branded restaurants we thought this would be nice for a special occasion. A set three course meal cost £25 pp which i felt good value for the surround ambiance and service. Drinks were no more expensive than what other hotels charge. We found the Waiters or Waitress very pleasant not overbearing just wanting us to enjoy our evening and that we mattered . We found the food tastefully cooked Steak and the fish which aptly named Brill turns out it’s a flat fish. You need to book if at busy times i believe. No jeans or trainers allowed it’s smart casual. Small flight of stairs to enter but a small chair lift to use if needed.

Stayed here for the Land Rover experience and enjoyed a great dinner bed and breakfast. The meal at the 1851 restaurant in my humble opinion was an excellent fine dining experience. All three courses were well presented, hot and delicious. Value was excellent and service was first class.

The restaurant was included in the price when I booked the room at Peckforton Castle overnight. The menu was a fixed 3-course menu for mid-week. Plenty of choices. Presentation of food was excellent and the taste was sublime. The dessert was to die for. Would highly recommend to visit.

Such a beautiful castle. Well worth having a wander around. Ate here twice in a week. Firstly in the bistro which was lovely. Our meals were delicious. Second time was in the 1851 restaurant, where we had a wonderful meal. It was so good, especially the desserts. I love this restaurant. Nicely decorated, lovely view, pleasant staff. Will be back for sure.

We had high expectations of this restaurant having been granted 3 AA rosettes. The restaurant has no character of the castle, it is modern and bland. Our starters were ok but nothing special, portions were on the small side. We were most disappointed when the mains arrived, we had both selected the pork fillet. We had 2 small pieces of fillet each (about 1 forkful per piece), with a table spoonful of apple sauce and a tea spoonful of mash with a small slice of roasted parsnip. We concluded that the more rosettes a restaurant is awarded, the smaller the portions that are served. We had cheeseboard to conclude as despite being small eaters we were both hungry. Not worth a visit.

My husband had the salmon and I had the Duck both were not good. I then ordered a cheese platter and a glass of Port, they forgot the Port by the time it arrived the cheese was gone. They have a lot of different staff serving you so no connection can be made with one staff member. It is advertised as five star however definitely nowhere near that.

We had Sunday lunch last week to celebrate parents anniversary and have eaten regularly in 1851 in the past. This visit was a big disappointment with poor and non existent service as we tried to complain or resolve problems. Examples were that the bread was not bought out with the soup starter and the vegetables were not bought out with the main courses and I had to get the bar staff to chase the kitchen to provide this. The off the bone beef was described as 24 hour slow cooked but was as tough as leather and we were not the only party in the restaurant to complain about the quality. We hope this lunch was an exception as the restaurant has previous provided an excellent experience both in terms of the meal and the setting but we will be waiting to hear other feedback prior to booking again

For the past two years I've wanted to try this restaurant. so it was time to book up and come and sample there delights! Having found out that Jason hodnett is now the executive head chef it made this trip more pleasurable, having tried his dishes before a few years ago where i live I knew what to expect. This time i was bringing my brother-in-law with me as he never been to any restaurants with accolades. This place it self is in the middle of the countryside and the Castle is beautiful site within itself..As we sat down to our table and giving menus on deciding what to have, chef gave us a choice either stick with the menus or have a surprise unexpected taster menu for the same price!! Which made my eyes light up so had to try the taster menu and see what will come out of the kitchen!!!First was Grain risotto + truffle & morel!!Beautiful texture from the grains nice and creamy and la dente with a nice nutty earthy flavour from the truffle and a beautiful tasting morel on top Next was Sipced lentil bon bons!!The spice taste from this was unbelievable not overpowering didn't burn your mouth with lovely lentils, i could of eaten more of these they was that good...Next Chicken ballotine + chicken wing + pickled cauliflower + chorizo!! Ballotine had maximum flavour !! The chicken wing reminded me of the best deep fried chicken you could ever taste just wish that wing was bigger !! The acid from the pickle was needed for the richness feom the ballotine and chorizo always works with chickenNext was Fillet of wild bass + wild rice + smoked eel + apple!!!This dish was superb, this was the best quality bass I've eaten! And cooked to perfection and i love smoked eel and was glad its was on the plate, witha lovely crunch from the rice which was needed !! Top marks for thisNext up was Duck + scotch egg + beetroot crisps + mushrooms!!!I love a good duck dish and this didn't let down! Duck cook how it should be and tender and melted away in the mouth!! With what me and my brother-in-law thought "the best scotch egg with ever tasted ever" the flavour from the scotch egg was just awesome !! If they was in a shop I'll would buy them....Next up was the dessert.Chocolate + raspberry + pavlova ice cream + mousse!! A chef comes out and smashes the chocolate dome for you to discover raspberries underneath and mouth. Cracking dessert 'literally' raspberries is my favourite fruit so was always going to be a winner for me And then a fine selection of cheeses just finish off a great night of fine food.....Was a great night friendly staff that had time to speak to you !! Chef come out with one of the dishes to explain withs on the plate it was worth travelling in the countryside from Telford to experience this beautiful place with excellent food...

We had dinner here on Monday as we enjoyed an overnight stay. The menu although not extensive was lovely. The bread was homemade and the butter amazing. The portions are not big and wouldn't be enough for a large appitite. The flavours were delicious and presentation perfect. Only criticism would be the fact our wine was presented to us to taste and the first glass poured but after that is was left to us. This was the same throughout the restaurant . Even the people behind us enjoying a bottle of champagne we pouring their own. Excusable perhaps if the restaurant had been busy and the staff very busy but this wasnt the case. Small point but in my opinion it's the little things that make the 5* experience.

Very nice meal shame the ambience of the restaurant was spoiled by a baby crying most of the time we were in there. Don't think children and babies should be allowed in the fine dining restaurant. One of the main reasons I chose to dine in here is because I thought it would be child free.

fantastic experience to dine in a Castle with a fantastic menu either a La Carte or tasting menu, or set menu etc. Fantastic food, extra in-between nibbles and dishes, all served in a booth or private area for you and your guests, great wine list, a unique experience, fantastic for a special meal or to treat friends to somewhere special. Valet parking, just arrive outside the main door, they take the car away and bring it back when you come out.

Firstly what a wonderful place to go and have dinner. I live just outside of Liverpool but within the hour I was sat in the middle of a wood in a lovely and impressive castle having dinner with family. We had dinner at 1851 Restaurant which is situated inside Peckforton Castle. I had never heard of Peckforton or 1851 before but we had received a gift voucher for Christmas and I'm glad we did. From parking the car the views were beautiful. You walk through a portcullis and into a courtyard seeing the magnificent castle in front of you. It has everything a castle should have, Thick walls, towers, chapel and felt impressive but not intimidating. 1851 itself was wonderfully decorated and felt classy but human. The food and service were outstanding, The staff were very attentive and welcoming and we didn't feel out of place which some places like this make you feel. Overall our family dinner was made all the better by eating top quality great tasting freshly prepared food in a magnificent surrounding. I would highly recommend this place.

We booked the complimentary pick-up service to dine for the first time at the 1851 restaurant. The exceptional service started at our front door where we were greeted by Anthony who was extremely courteous and gave us an exceptional welcome. This continued at the Castle where he showed us to the wine cellar where we ordered our drinks, and also took our drinks to our table in the restaurant. The food was lovely and excellent value for money - full of interesting combinations but not overly fussy, and there was plenty of it! The restaurant staff were attentive but not constantly at our table like what we've experienced at other restaurants. Our evening ended by being met in reception by Anthony who gave us a lift home. Highly recommended!

I booked a meal for 4 a while ago as I've been to 1851 restaurant a few times before and thought it would make a lovely place to celebrate my sons 30 th . I emailed reception to ask if the chef could do something with the dessert course to say happy birthday such as write it on the plate etc as we thought we had booked for the 5 courses and so a birthday cake would have been too heavy - I received an email back saying no problem a note has been put on for the chef on the night , which I was more than happy with I had noticed that the 5 courses menu had been taken off the website and I had seen quite a few lovely dishes on it so enquirer as to when the updated version would be available to view? I was told it changes daily at the moment but would be available Friday , which it wasn't but as the food is usually excellent anyway in the restaurant it didn't worry me We met my son and daughter in law to be at the castle , which remains gorgeous and we're shown to our booth , but handed one sheet of paper with 3 courses for £25 odd , I asked where the 5 course menu was and was told sorry there isn't one the new chef didn't like it but it will be available in a few weeks . This was disappointing to me as it was for a special birthday but my son said not to worry , and the food we ordered was indeed as lovely as ever with some wonderful new tastes, so no issues there at all . As we ordered our desserts I began to wander if the chef would remember about the birthday request - when dessert came there was absolutely nothing , even though I had mentioned during the meal to the waitress that it was my sons birthday . I could not find staff to ask and by the time I could it was too late , the portion sizes are tasty but small ! This was another disappointment . We ended the meal with coffee and I went to show my son and daughter in law The brasserie and part of the Castle as it is beautiful and I said I would bring them to The brasserie for afternoon tea very soon What a pity the 5 courses wasn't on - they never informed me or I may have postponed this time and also that sons birthday went unmarked I have been told that my email asking why this happened has been passed to both the Manager and the Restaurant so await to see their response ? I will return though once the new chef sorts out the 5 course menu as I love Peckforton castle and the food is always excellent as is the afternoon tea in the brasserie and the castle remains as magical as ever

The restaurant setting is very romantic. I was expecting to be wowed by the food after reading the write up on the website. I found the food fairly average to be honest. I had belly pork which I found to be quite dry, and the small amount of sauce that accompanied it was over reduced. I much prefer The Chefs table in Chester, Chef Liam and his brigade work daily miracles that excite the taste buds. Overall pretty underwhelmed with 1851 restaurant

During our weeks holiday my wife and I stayed at 3 different hotels all rated the same as Peckforton Castle and without a doubt the food served at the 1851 was by far the best. We had a three course meal on both nights and there was plenty of choice and range over both of them. Even the butter served with the bread was lovely (leading to my wife buying some smoked butter from the internet on our return home) the food was well presented and filling (after three courses I had a lot of problems moving).

The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

This place has a vast amount of things for children to play on. However don’t expect to get food quick- they have two cage areas but one is never open and the other has a constant huge queue because the staff take forever! Even if you want drinks you have to queue with the food and last time we queued for 25 minutes! Ridiculous when you have children to supervise and feee!
