Second Visit: Disappointing Compared to the First! My first visit to The Touring Club left a lasting impression—minimalistic Scandinavian design, a welcoming atmosphere, and excellent food and drinks. Unfortunately, my second experience didn’t quite live up to the same standards. The sleek black exterior and Scandi-inspired interior remain highlights. The glass roof and open kitchen add charm, while the mix of bar seating, window stools, and cozy tables offers versatility. On this visit, I sat upstairs at the long communal table before moving downstairs as seats became available. However, space management remains an issue. By 2:15 PM, the venue felt cramped when a group of five arrived. The food aromas were present but not overwhelming, and the view of the chefs from the bar seating is still a nice touch. The Beef Sliders: Disappointingly dry, with average-quality meat. The kimchi and cheese added some flavor but lacked the moisture or richness a good sauce could have provided. The Crab and mango Salad: A lackluster dish with a small portion for the price. While the pesto was passable, the crab was underwhelming, and the accompanying vegetables didn’t elevate the dish. Gin Basil Smash cocktail : A letdown this time—less intensity and balance compared to my previous visit. The drink lacked the vibrant flavors I had enjoyed the first time. The team is warm but seemed somewhat overwhelmed - the wait for order was long and had to come down to ground level to prompt. Also be aware of a food service break between breakfast and lunch (12:30–1:00 PM) creates a gap where no food is served, which could be inconvenient for some diners.

Tucked away just behind The Star Inn in Dinas Powys and near the village green triangle, The Humble Onion shares an entrance with the pub’s rear drinks terrace, which can be a bit confusing if you’re navigating via Google Maps—you might end up on a nearby residential street facing a brick wall. Look instead for the driveway by The Star Inn, where there’s some adjacent parking. The restaurant itself is set within a converted cottage, cosy and characterful, with a charming bar area, exposed wooden beams, and a slightly rustic banquet-style dining setup. It’s an intimate space, seating just 8 to 10 tables, and the menu is tightly curated: four starters, four mains, and around six desserts. We sampled three of the starters, all of which were excellent. The mackerel patty with crispy bread and beetroot was well-balanced, the potato and Parmesan croquettes came perched on a bed of sriracha with generous Parmesan shavings, and the boneless fried chicken—served with Asian slaw—was particularly good. For mains, the standout was the crispy lamb breast served with sautéed pancetta greens and garden peas. The sauce was delicious, though a little more of it wouldn’t have gone amiss. Service was warm and welcoming. There was a single front-of-house staff member on the night, who was charming though understandably stretched, especially with a few larger tables (a party of six, one of four, and a couple of smaller ones). For dessert, the mandarin cheesecake was light and pleasant, though not quite memorable. We saw the chocolate pudding pass by and suspected we might’ve missed out on something more indulgent. Overall, The Humble Onion offers a relaxed, enjoyable dining experience with a genuinely well-crafted menu. It’s small, focused, and full of flavour—a real gem for those who appreciate thoughtful cooking in a cosy setting.

Booked for Sunday lunch and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Service was outstanding and the food was very very tasty and looked incredible. We had Lamb and the Beef and it was cooked perfectly. I would personally recommend the scotch eggs for a starter as they were outstanding. 100% going again to work our way through the menu ☺️

Food is good and at a reasonable price, especially for a restaurant. The only reason that let's this restaurant down is the price for drinks. It is the same as ordering another meal. Very, expensive, which put me off eating here again.
