The Roost on Rock Road in The Vale of Glamorgan

Consistently bad, Used to come here a few years back, food was stunning and top notch, this past few visits have been seriously questionable, the garden doors were open which was nice untill the smell of smoke bellowed in as about 10 people chain smoking next the the restaurant with the doors open, which is a massive turn off when your eating but the cigarette smoke actually masked the taste of the awful Frozen food I was served. The food is the worse part ! Frozen produce, undercooked mess of a night out meal, dirty table/cutlery and even the “chip buckets” where full of mould and rust , didn’t eat any of my food apart from one bite (tasted undercooked and like dog food) slimey veg - sent it back with it all on the plate, the owner didn't take it off the bill or offer a discount, we had few bottles of wine starters and sides n all sorts - was all Terrible, the bread starter was just ciabatta cut up ( not rustic bread like advertised) abysmal if you ask me, they asked me for advice on how to do better next time which was strange while taking a seat at my dinner table - definitely won’t be coming here again ! This place has gone down hill big time ! Such a shame and I was embarrassed to have taken my party there. Never again.

Excellent food, Excellent service, wonderful ambience. A wonderful night was had by all. Parking a little bit of an issue.

We have been to the Roost a number of times, but this visit was not the best. The selection of toasted country bread was a cut up ciabatta turned into garlic bread, the smoked butter was runny and not smoked and the oil was of poor quality for dipping. The large plate sirloin steak was average pub steak, not cooked well. All in all disappointing.

Wow! From start to finish, my experience at The Roost on Rock Road was nothing short of 5 star! Check in details and information were spot on from Joanne, lovely, responsive and polite correspondence from the beginning. On arrival, I was greeted by Tom who was most accommodating, friendly, polite and helpful! Tom was sure to include me in the local chat as I was visiting alone, and he made me feel right at home. Then there was the food!!!!!! The best Thai fish cakes I’ve ever tasted and steak to die for! Jorden the wonderful and very talented chef produced what I can only say is above 5 star food!! If only there were 6! Delicious, tasty and cooked to perfection! What a wonderful, albeit short trip! That said, I will most definitely be returning for leisure and not business next time! Thanks to the wonderful team!

Absolutely 10/10. Me and my partner came in for our 2 year anniversary and everything was PERFECT! From the staff to the food we couldn’t have asked for more. I recommend the steak night and the chocolate brownie for desert. TRY IT FOR YOURSELF.

We love love love this pub. So lucky to have it on our doorstep. Food is so tasty and the chef Jordan never disappoints. We love to have breakfast there, enjoy a cool drink in the sunshine in their garden and the staff especially are always keen to make our visit special. Special thanks to Jo, Andrew, Tom & Niamh as well as Jordan too for looking after our guests recently at the wake of our lovely mum. It’s just such a lovely place to be.

Located on a side road in St Athan - this is worth seeking out. Great visit. Very good summer menu. Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. Good value.

Visited for Sunday lunch (second time). Both occasions food and service were excellent. Beef, salmon and vegetarian options were all spot on. Dessert, if you can fit it in, again, super - lemon curd Eton mess, white chocolate cheesecake and the cheeseboard were delicious. No sign of any course language or unruly behaviour at the bar (as mentioned in previous review) and staff were all lovely - to the extent they alerted me when I tipped on top of service charge. Will definitely return. Thank you!

This was our second visit to the Roost, the first time for Sunday lunch, and I have to say it really was the best lunch we have had, and we visit many restaurants, I would strongly recommend a visit, amazing food, wonderful friendly staff, we ate in the bar as we had our two dogs with us, and they were made extremely welcome, can't wait to go back, thank you the roost for a perfect Sunday afternoon.

We booked for Sunday lunch today on arrival the atmosphere is warm and inviting made more so by the hosts Jo and Andrew and their great team You straight away notice that that everyone is made to feel welcome be you a regular or a first time visitor We ordered the Thai fish cake with sauce and beautiful crisp salad just enough to start you off . Our main course was locally sourced lamb with roast potatoes cabbage selection of vegetables perfectly cooked copious amounts of gravy a side order of cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding The lamb was I have to say for us both stunning We stared a sticky toffee pudding and ice cream which was gorgeous

Beautiful rooms decorated to a high standard. Our welcome was very warm. Food was disappointing to say the least. Lots of loud drunk people filled the bar who had foul mouths and abusive behaviour was tolerated which totally spoilt the experience for us. Will not be back unfortunately. Used to be a fantastic venue. It certainly has potential to be great again if the focus is placed back on food and rooms.

Another fabulous meal at the Roost to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary and as always it did not disappoint. The beef dinner was absolutely delicious as was the chicken dinner my husband had. Lovely place with a really friendly atmosphere. Joanne and Andrew are very welcoming and cannot do enough to help. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again soon.

What an Incredible afternoon we had on Mothers Day Second to none service and hosting from Jo, Andrew and team and absolutely stunning food as always . I felt thoroughly spoilt with my glass of fizz upon arrival , ate far too much as always. Thank you for the best time x.

Excellent lunch yesterday. Food and service was perfect, great value for money. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would definitely god back next time we are in the area.

We booked in for dinner on valentines night and had a wonderful time. We received a warm welcome as always from Jo and her staff and secured a lovely cosy couch by the fire. The dinner service was fantastic and our waitress was ever so friendly. The meal was gorgeous! We both started with Thai fish cakes and then had the sirloin steaks. Both were mouthwatering and perfectly cooked We will be returning soon and I would recommend this little gem to anyone

Loved the hospitality there, such a clean and beautiful place. The room itself was incredible. Imagine a show room, The cleaner done a grand job.(pay rise) 🤣. And the host, fantastic. Although I live fairly local, booked here for the night with my partner and booked into the restaurant. Firstly, the rooms are stunning. Well appointed, beautifully finished, luxurious, clean, peaceful and comfortable. Lovely big bath, amazing shower and underfloor heating in the bathroom! It was heaven! Joanne met us in the restaurant, what a wonderful and welcoming lady. We felt very welcomed from the start and nothing was too much trouble for Joanne or any of the team. Kudos to the chef too, the Thai fishcakes were stunning, the pork belly was gorgeous and that lamb was probably the best I’ve ever had! We didn’t have dessert because we were so full, but that dessert menu looked amazing too! Can’t wait to come back and try the Sunday menu as well! Very good value for money all round. The rugby was on this weekend and St Athan is a stones throw from Cardiff, so the room was very well priced considering and the food was worth every single penny. 100% will be staying again!

We've been to the Roost several times since it first opened. Last time though was autumn 2022 and we really enjoyed it. Food then was excellent and something a bit more special and of better quality than a lot of places in the area. Roll on to this time and the food was decidely average pub food. Would not bother with a return visit. Nothing stood out, parts of meal over cooked to beyond recognition like dauphinoise potatoes, other bits under like unrendered pork fat on the pork belly. It feels like whereas before the focus was the restaurant and food, now it's become a mish mash of drinking pub with meals an after thought.

A little gem of a place that left a big impact! I stayed here with friends to celebrate my 50th birthday, our room was adorable! Very spaceous and comfortable. The decor is very relaxing and homely. It was lovely to wake up to the birds singing. The food, WOW! It was fantastically presented, it tasted wonderful. The white chocolate cheesecake, left me speechless! I would highly recommend the food here….you must go! Jo & Andrew could not do enough to ensure we felt welcome. The chef, Jordan is one of a kind! An absolute pleasure to meet you! We will definitely come back, in fact I can’t wait to book a table for Sunday lunch! Thank you to Jo, Andrew and the team.
