Turned up for a reservation made weeks ago, to which we received a reminder about this week, to find the restaurant all closed up / in darkness. Odd that this happened to someone in the reviews last week as well. Upside, cracking dinner up the road at the One O'Clock Gate which really saved the evening

Poor, very poor. I really don't understand the high scoring reviews. It's been a long time since I've had such a poor meal at a restaurant. There was absolutely nothing right about the food tonight, poorly conceived, poorly cooked and poorly presented.

Went for Sunday lunch, first course I had a chopped up beetroot with 2 pieces of feta ummm. Second course a beef dinner was very small, veg consisting of 1 carrot and some chopped savoy, asked for extra gravy but it did not arrive, no heating in there so not very warm also had a bottle of cider all which came to £76 for two .not cheap for what you get. Have been there a few times in the past and was much better

Sadly had an awful experience due to poor staff. Had been waiting to eat here for a while so we chose this spot to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Sadly the restaurant was so loud due to an unruly table and zero sound control (the restaurant is in an old barn) so conversation was impossible. Staff were no where to be seen, was left at the end of our meal waiting on the Cheque while the two table staff were squeeling with giggles hidden up by the bar. Didn’t order desert as we waited on the staff for so long we instead gave up and waited at the exit to pay before interrupting the giggle staff. Then they have the gall to charge a 10% service fee… Also, if you’re going to charge so much for a side of fries, at least dry them off and salt them so you’re not serving a bowl of cold chip oil to your customers.

A birthday girl from three doors down, new in town. New mum. After the welcome in the star inn and rave reviews what made sense was to book a Sunday birthday lunch, if possible. It was! The staff are welcoming, lovely and helpful. Even when we set fire to the wrapping paper the other customers were ok too. Now, the fixed mains on Sunday … go for the beef. So so succulent. And as for the wine, forget the 4 x multiplier rule and £78 just enjoy the occasion. First class service, lovely restaurant. I hope to be back again soon.

First time at The Humble Onion, and it was for Father’s Day. A hidden gem, tucked behind the Star Inn pub in Dinas Powys, it’s a renovated cow shed I believe. Beautifully decorated, with only a handful of tables per sitting, we were welcomed by such friendly waiting staff. The Sunday menu gives a small variety, but fear not - there’s something for everyone! I had the asparagus starter with the featherblade beef Sunday roast for mains, my dad had the same, whereas my mum and brother chose the chicken rilette starter with the pork belly roast mains. WOW! Hat off to the chef, the flavours were incredible. Each element on my dish was cooked to perfection, the vegetables - so fresh and prepped well with the slightest al dente bite, alongside the meat which fell apart as soon as your fork touched it, to the rich bold gravy perfect in thickness and in flavour that truly brought the dish together. You can tell a chef by his roast potatoes. These were amazing! So fluffy inside, with the crispiest golden exterior. It hit the spot!! Portions were great, enough to make you full, but not too much so it would go to waste. My only criticism was the dessert menu. As much as my stomach said no more, I would have made room for a classic dessert like a crumble. I have no doubt your menu is delicious, and I understand you can’t keep everyone happy, but I would have snapped it up in a heartbeat! (A crumble might be a bit heavy as a dessert, but I bet the chef could make a cracking one!!) Would I come again? Absolutely! Next time, would try the Saturday menu to see what the menu has to offer! Thank you for a fabulous Father’s Day - dad loved it!!!

Amazing food and front of house team. Wanted to visit for ages and managed to book a Sunday lunch. From the moment you enter to the drinks arriving I was looking forward to the meal. Well it was excellent The starters were just right perfectly seasoned and amazing flavours. The main meals were also a triumph. The beef so soft and flavourful the potatoes crispy and fluffy. The veg cooked to perfection. We were unable to have desserts and the mains were large. Well worth a visit.

The beef was really nice on the Sunday dinner, just pulled apart and the veggies that come with it tasted great. Cauliflower Cheese was a bit burnt and had the korean fried chicken which tasted great too but was like a single chicken nuggets on a plate. The biggest downside was the price as it stated on the menu from their website £25 for 2 courses but when we got a menu at the restaurant it was £28.50. Overall really nice and glad I went but if you're a vegetarian which 80% of my group was, there was only 1 choice, but meat eater the beef I would highly recommend 👌

Absolutely divine sunday lunch, the flavours were just stunning, so so tasty. The cauliflower cheese is probably the best I have ever tasted, yet at £6 a dish as a side I feel like sunday lunch should come with cauliflower cheese already, especially as you are paying more than your bog standard carvery. Roast potatoes little bit hard also, possibly as we were a 2.30 sitting but still tasty and fluffy inside - everything on the plate was yum. Really underwhelmed with the dessert though, 5 of us in the group of 7 ordered the poached pears and everybody commented on how hard they were - not something I would expect after paying £8.50 for a dessert, lacking in something special on that particular dessert sadly. 10/10 lunch but wouldn't rush back, few tweaks needed to make perfect at the prices expected.

I had such high hopes having heard amazing things but for the money spent, it was just a bit average. I shelled out for the venison which was hard to cut and a bit chewy, and whilst staff were lovely, service was slow at times (albeit we were a big table). I don’t go out to eat much anymore, so when I do, I like going to smaller places which I know add a premium, but this was just a disappointment for nearly £50pp I’m afraid.

So the reviews were great and we wanted a treat after my husband being away with work for a while. Service was ok - took a while but not too intrusive. My main issue was the plastic in my son’s meal. Apologies issued but rather than take the meal off the bill - the others were fine - we got one free dessert. Anything covered in copious amounts of popcorn is fine for an 11 year old but hardly makes up for plastic in the meal. It’s ok but that’s about it. The Ox cheek on a Tesco crumpet was interesting 🤨.
