Visited today. Place smelled of smoke or cooking oil soon as we opened door. Should have turned around then! Went in, sat down ,chose our food & went up to order. Asked for sandwich as on menu. Told no sandwiches. Only what made up in chilled cabinet. .which were bland, baguettes lined up rows. Totally unappetising looking. Asked for a ham & cheese one. Asked if they could add chutney to it as it was mentioned in another filling on the menu. Lady said couldn't say. Man who I presume was owner or manager was walking past. She asked can we add chutney to a sandwich? His answer..without even looking over was 'I suppose so!" That was the 2nd time we should have just left. Tea ordered. No milk please. Tea came. Teapot of tea, cup with a milk jug in it and mill out the jug spilled all over the inside of the cup. Asked for a new cup. No apologies. Food came. The 'sandwiches' had been toasted. We never asked for toasted rolls. There was salad smothered in a dressing I didn't want and tortilla chips added for some reason. The 'sandwich' bread was chewy, disgusting. The tuna mayo tasted acidic. The whole experience was horrific. A complete waste of £25. I'd advise anyone visiting Ballater not to visit this cafe. Disinterested staff, unappetising food. Just awful. And yes, we're still waiting on the chutney.....

Had a really enjoyable lunch with family. Very nice options on the menu all clearly prepared fresh in the kitchen and amazing cake options! Service was attentive and friendly - a really pleasant experience. We were fans of the establishment previously so great to see new ownership continuing high standards of the past.

Having taken the long drive through the village to get to the Linn of Quoich and visit Queen Vicky's Picnic cottage and Punch Bowl, we had to drive back through the village and pulled over to find somewhere for lunch. Having spotted the sign (below road level) that the pub was open for lunch we were so hungry that despite in being in The Fife Arms and was going to be pricey we'd gone past the point of caring. How wrong I was and pleasantly so. We got a table up the stais in the window which was perfect and our drinks and food order swiftly followed. We interrogated Sam (as it wasn't busy) on pretty much his entire life story and his choice of vocation. Thank you Sam - it was genuinely a pleasure to talk. Anyway onto the most important bit - the food! My wife has talked about nothing else (not even the week away) than how perfect the Steak Sandwich was, which she demolished in it's entirety. I opted for the Shetland Blue mussels with cider and it was truly the best dish of mussels I've ever eaten (taking into consideration numerous visits to France, the South Coast of England, and the Yorkshire East Coast. We dream of nothjing else than that day. It was perfect and if you're passing by, drop in. You will not be dissapointed.

Small portions chicken barely edible needed a chainsaw to cut through the panko breaded chicken fillets which was replaced by a chicken burger again burnt around the outside (deep fried at too high a temp) When we complained for the second time we were threatened with the police We won’t be returning
