Lovely place! I had the tomato salad and blue murder cheese. Delicious. First time here and will definitely go back. Loved how you can sit outside too. Dogs are very welcome.

Braemar has changed so much lately (for the better), a lively little village with the now amazing Fife Arms and its bar - The Flying Stag - being its centrepiece. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for a contemporary mixed with traditional Highland (Aberdeenshire) hospitality.

We really enjoyed our evening at the flying stag. The food was superb - I had the pork belly and black pudding starter followed by the Haggis neeps and Tarries and both dishes were just lovely. I'd forgotten how much I like Haggis and this brought it back ( and more) and the Neeps were just lovely. Service was great and the venue spectacular. Loved the whole evening here. One question though - what are the numbered birds in the photo?

The reviews pointing out the poor service, and wafer thin steaks are spot on. Food amd drink is generally good, but the male waiters genuinely cannot be bothered which really lets down the broader hotel - the females did their best though. Given there have been multiple reviews of the same thing and we experienced the same we will not be choosing to take a step further by staying at the hotel.

Very nice venue in a beautiful part of Scotland. Rustic bar and dining area with good attentive staff. High end hotel but food is very good and not too expensive for the standard and venue. Casual wear is more than acceptable and dogs are more than welcome. Would recommend black pudding and pork belly fritter to start.

Back in the area visiting family and met at the Flying Stag, wow once again a wonderful meal in a fabulous venue and outstanding staff. I can highly recommend the black pudding Bon Bon, the tomato and blue cheese salad and the roast beef. The venue is amazing with so much history, dog friendly and no rushing you to eat your meal. Will be back later on in the year and can’t wait. Thank you all and well done on the fabulous food and service

Great food, friendly welcome, only wished they had more choice of lagers but that’s a personal choice as ones on offer were very hoppy! We enjoyed chicken and leek pie with garlic mash - disappointing that everywhere you go these days, when you want some variety and colour to your meal, you have to pay an extortionate EXTRA amount for a few cheap veggies!

Called in for a midweek early dinner, the chap in tweed squeezed us in despite the pub being nearly full. The staff were fantastic, even though we’d walked in from the street they took a real interest in us. They took time to recommend us places to see in the area whilst we’re here. We had the fried chicken and both roll to start, with the chicken pie and ham, egg & chips for mains. All the food was spot on, exactly what you expect from a village pub.

Service very poor considering it’s the bar of a 5* hotel with prices to match for what is really bar food. Couldn’t find our booking initially on arrival at correct time, we were met with blank looks, despite having made it in person 3 days earlier. We were then directed to an unset empty table so clearly they weren’t prepared for us. No tap water offered only bottled which my daughter ordered. We then saw tap water on other tables & cancelled. First main was wrong, veggie haggis ordered but traditional haggis arrived so had to wait for replacement. Cutlery for starter only brought so had to wait for it to be replaced when both mains & desserts arrived. No greens/veg/sides really with main unless you pay extra. Wild garlic butter on mash far too strong, chicken pie had a tarragon taste although didn’t see it mentioned & tartare sauce with fish tasted very strange. No extra sauces like mayo, mustard etc offered we had to try & attract attention to get some - amazing how some staff despite walking past can almost blank you! One dessert forgotten completely so the rest of us had finished by the time it arrived, after a second reminder, with not even an apology. One of our party was very ill overnight afterwards (chicken pie eaten). We got the impression the (young) staff didn’t really care about customer service & were maybe supplementing their summer outdoor activities with a bit of waiting on, rather than being professional staff. I did tell the member of staff who came to take payment that I would not be adding a tip as the service was too slapdash but he didn’t seem to understand what the word meant so I clarified it by using poor - no response other than ok. Tried it, won’t go back.

We arrived at 7pm for our booked table, but did not get our food until 8.30 pm. We complained very politely and they explained that it was our fault, they said we ordered our drinks 20 minutes after we got in, but that was because no one would take our order earlier, they said we did not order our food until x, but we could not as again nobody would take our order. Food was fine, but we were past it by the time it arrived.

We booked in for lunch at The Flying Stag as a birthday treat for my toddler and father in law while he was up visiting. Waiting staff were lovely with my toddler and so helpful with information about a food intolerance. They were so kind and engaging and also made suggestions about places we could explore locally and encouraged us to look at the art in the hotel, which is amazing. My little one enjoyed colouring in at the table and seeing people in the bar with dogs. Food was out of this world. Father in law had steak, I had mussels and my little one had fish. Loved how many local and Scottish ingredients were used including wild garlic. Afterward we had a cheese board and sticky toffee pudding. Atmosphere in the bar was great: a mix of family, couples and dogs. We enjoy looking at the art later on too.

We went in after walking in the local area for a few pints. Great selection of local beers and great atmosphere. Perfect place to wile away hours with a pint, the historical setting was really picturesque and the pub is clearly at the heart of the community. We were there for several hours in the late afternoon and met lots of staff all who could not do more for us. We ordered at the bar and each time they insisted on bringing the drinks themselves. All young lads who were really kind and welcoming. One was very kind and explained to me exactly where all their hunting displays are (I had explained to him I have a slight phobia of them) which was HUGELY appreciated. Another was very nice and enquired about our holiday - he was thrilled when I told him we were on honeymoon and was clearly proud of his local community and wanted to give us more suggestions of what to do and see. Really great pub for experiencing the Highlands. Don't forget to say hello the Jonathan - the REAL flying stag.

It is our third time at the Flying Stag (we stay at a hotel near Blairgowrie for fishing ) , the Tay was unfishable so we headed to Braemar. Great place, nice uncomplicated but delicious food and the décor is superb. Nice staff, busy as bees. I think the people who leave bad reviews are most probably a bit envious sad souls as we can’t fault it. Yes it is not cheap but why would it be, they use premium ingredients and the building is fantastic. Well done guys, if we can’t fish the Tay tomorrow we will be back (maybe for skiing by the look of it, love Scotland in April 🤣).

Met friends for lunch as an easy hour’s drive for all of us . The location and the interior of the restaurant and hotel were excellent. We had a window seat for our meal and then moved to a sitting room at the back for coffee. The log fire was lit and very cosy . Staff all very friendly and helpful. Food was piping hot and very tasty . Only adverse comments were that the hake bites for starters were a bit overdone and we could have done with more sauce and salad to improve the plates of venison burgers.

Our waiter was a very friendly young man from Dewsbury near Leeds , he was courteous and attentive . The food was exactly what we wanted .. there’s a good choice of “ Gastropub “ staples .. Don’t be intimidated that the restaurant is in a fancy expensive hotel , it’s very regular , reasonable value .. and accessible to all .. highly recommended

We walked into the main reception area at the Fife arms and we were asked by a young man what we wanted so we said we would like tea, he said we should go to the Flying stag bar for that, we found a table and sat down we waited a while and eventually our order was taken, there was no menu for afternoon tea so we just ordered 2 coffees and a hot chocolate. Went out drinks were brought to the table we asked if there was any cake in which we were informed there was no cake we also enquired on biscuits which we were told they were out of stock. This isn’t the most friendly venue and £12.00 for 3 hot drinks was a bit steep. Plenty of other friendly venues in the area who do stock cake and biscuits.

We decided that we had to visit this bar due to its interior decor. We walked in the main entrance and were guided to the bar by a smart chap in tartan plus fours, via the shop! The bar is interestingly decorated and the staff uniforms make them look very smart. There was a wide selection of drinks and the barman was happy to help and give you a taste. The only downside was the price, my choice was £7.50 a pint. The only time I recall paying more was in the Shard in London! but there were plenty of people drinking, so it obviously works for them.

Went to this pub for Hogmanay. Having travelled many thousands of kilometres to get there, the experience, sadly, fell short of expectations. The pub, while warm and reasonably well appointed, seemed a little forced, almost formula if that is the right word. There was a clear demarcation (at least that was the vibe) between regular patrons and the rich guests at a function in another part of the pub. As an example, live music was scheduled in the main bar area but this was re-located when the band for the posh event failed to show up. It just felt like a bit of a “screw you” to the ordinary punters but a good example. This, I fear, is a management problem, which leads me to the next point. Staff in the main bar were extremely good. Friendly and genial, with no pretensions. Ready to engage with customers, they lifted the experience. The food, also, was quite good and the haggis, tatters and neeps are definitely worth a try. Portions could be a little bigger. I did hear from some of the locals in the district that the Flying Stag had become too commercial and had “priced itself out” of the local market at least. Maybe something for management to consider.

Wonderful atmosphere, beautifully decorated for Christmas. Pub staff were very friendly and helpful and the fish pie was sensational…best I’ve ever had! Compliments to the chef! But…we were there for Hogmanay, visiting from Australia, and expecting so much more. The lunch service was very busy and we were glad we had booked well in advance, although communications regarding our booking were sketchy. After lunch the atmosphere completely died off. We had been led to believe there would be a band…which never appeared. The staff seemed to be really pushed (despite how quiet it was) and had no real idea of what was going on. There was a BIG NYE function going on in the Fife Arms that seemed to take priority, and we were left feeling that if you weren’t part of that function it would have been better to just go home. Which in the end we did. Feeling rather disappointed. We did however return for the midnight fireworks and stood on the village bridge to watch them…and they were wonderful!

Followed by the venison burger and fish & chips. Decent portions of all the dishes and value for money. The Flying Stag has a really relaxed and welcoming vibe. Went in for a quick take away ice cream for me and the kids. There were 2 young girls behind the counter. 1 person was paying for their sit down meal and a mum and push chair were at the ice cream. Seemed to be struggling with Apple Pay and took an age to serve the ice cream. The other staffer was making coffees. A queue started forming and the mum left. Unfortunately I was ignored and the person who just walked on got served. I walked out and got served instantly next door. Not the first time happened in there. I won’t be back

Right next to where we stayed this little cafe was calling out for us to get coffee and cake. The cake offering was very good with lots of choice and the same with the drinks. Both were delicious - however, the service was so slow due to there being one member of staff trying to manage everything with a queue forming outside and orders coming in on an app. There needs to be more people helping.

Was having a family Christmas lunch there were 4 adults and 2 children, we were welcomed in,all proper procedures were adhered to, server asked about allergies before we ordered great but went down hill fast from there 3 of the adults had carvery we were asked what meats we wanted 2 wanted all 3 1 wanted gammon and turkey that was all we were asked. When the meal came she did not know what was on plate.Potatoes, vegetables etc were already on plate not in dishes to take what you wanted (as we were not asked what we wanted) the food was not even look warm and there were very full plates went back, it was not even asked when the server saw the full plates if there was a problem, as this was a Christmas family lunch and £60 we were very disappointed and would think twice about visiting again.
