I was absolutely astonished by the rudeness of the male staff member working today and to be honest it totally ruined our experience. I didn't realise the food on the menu was pre-made so asked for a baguette with 3 ingredients not realising it would be a problem. When the young girl at the til advised me that they didn't have what I asked for, I asked if it was possible to have it made it and she said no which is fine. I then asked what did they have available for vegetarians thinking that because they were pre-made they might not have everything available as it was getting later on in the day. She asked the gentleman making the food what was available for vegetarians and he walked away while mumbling something under his breath, went through the back, and then shouted through ITS ALL ON THE MENU in a disgruntled way. I was so taken aback. Talk about good customer service during the festive period wow. The poor girl at the til had to then apologise for his behaviour after seeing how I had not taken kindly to his rudeness. The food is fine. Nothing special. Very limited menu and very overpriced for what it is. Had my Dad not been extremely hungry I would have walked out after being spoken to like that. I am all for supporting local small business but there's absolutely no way I would return. The customer service was lacking throughout. Watching the female server interact with other customers she also appeared irked by the existence of people in the cafe. Perhaps if you don't like the general public your business shouldn't be based on providing a service to them!

We stayed in Birkhall for 5 days and managed two visits to the restaurant. On both occasions, we had a friendly welcome. Excellent service with great custom service. We felt the service was attentive. The food was excellent on both occasions, fresh local produce and well cooked. The coffee we ordered were hot and better made than Starbucks hit and miss. We will return to Ballater in 2024 and will certainly visit again. I don't leave reviews often at all but felt the service we received deserved one.

This morning, I went to the Bridge House Café and ordered a Haggis and Black pudding Sausage roll. I saw this written on the menu board. As I am a lover of both Haggis and Black pudding, I couldn't resist; I have to try it. It came with fried egg, tomatoes and a portion of baked beans. It was delicious and well-presented. The pastry was well-coloured and crispy. It was a feast for the eyes and taste buds; the taste jumped out. With a good cup of coffee, my morning couldn't be better and a pleasant start to the day. Kudos to the chef and the team. No doubt about it, Anthony; I'll be back soon.

In summary, the worst breakfast I've ever ordered! Overpriced, stingy and luke warm. One egg, one tattie scone, one sausage, one slice of toast and half a raw tomato for ten quid (the photo tells the entire sad story). We both left still feeling hungry, which is the opposite of what you'd have hoped from a cooked breakfast - we ended up stopping at the Bothy in Braemar afterwards as we were still hungry (wish we'd went here for breakfast instead and can highly recommend here as an alternative to Bridge House!!). No beans or mushrooms, and excluding the toast that you'd expect as standard with any breakfast, there were only three and a half items on the plate! A pack of six tattie scones is 90p, box of six eggs £1.50, four pack of veggie lorne sausage is £2.25, six pack of tomatoes 85p and a loaf of bread £1.60 from the supermarket - so one egg, one tattie scone, one sausage, one slice of toast and half a tomato adds up to about £1.22. I know we're in an cost of living crisis but who is doing well out of this? Certainly not the customers of Bridge House Cafe! To top it off, it was luke warm. My friend also had one of their fancy hot chocolates - watery and tasteless. Ultimately, this place is all style and no substance. I, however, cannot fault the waiting staff who were the only saving grace as they were all lovely and this is clearly a management issue (if management say otherwise then it only highlights that management are the issue). You have to order at the till and so we had already paid by the time our food arrived, which is very sneaky of management as I would not have paid for this if I hadn't already! The staff were lovely and we didn't want to further ruin our experience by having to have an uncomfortable conversation with them about the management's decision to offer up such stingy portions for their breakfasts. I actually left feeling ashamed, knowing that so many tourists pass through Ballater and this pathetic breakfast is the impression visitors will have of a "full" Scottish veggie breakfast. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Ballater is a lovely small town to stroll around; all the usual upmarket gift stores, bookstores which offer something to read on holiday, and plenty of different games and puzzles should you be staying here and find the weather gets a bit wet and grey! And in the summer, you might come here for the Highland Games. If you are in town and looking for a place to eat during the day, Bridge House cafe has a lot to recommend it. Coffee and cake or sandwiches with either soup or salad, there is a range of options in every category. They were happy to prepare a gluten free sandwich for our daughter. We also appreciated the friendly and efficient service, and the pleasant indoor eating space with a bit of character, and an attached gift store (of course) which you walk through to get to the toilets. The big glass shopfront windows let in plenty of light and enable you to watch the world pass by.

Subjective? Perhaps but we were not alone in our experience today. My daughter met the mother of a family of six - eating by the window - in the Ladies who, bemoaning the cleanliness of the bathrooms, shared our thoughts on both the food and service. We did follow the lunchtime rush, admittedly, but there were no baked potatoes and little choice of vegetarian paninis. However, it was the attitude of the older woman which irked. My son is gluten-free and, eventually, it was agreed that they would make him up a panini/toastie. Happy to wait - but not that long - two paninis were brought (£9.95 each) on plates filled with non-descript crisps and the most basic of salads. The gluten-free one? Whoops! They made a mistake - after 15 minutes - and would make one up! Five minutes later, the same plate of cheap crisps and salad arrived with a tiny toasted sandwich - the END of the loaf? Filling? Apologies for pieces of chicken and bacon! To serve up THAT at a cost of £8! Aware of our feelings, it was clear that our table was avoided ... In summary? A bad day? Perhaps but the cost of mediocre food and service is prohibitive. Remember, we were not alone in our experience.

Visited 15th July.. utter disappointment Service was terrible, the person who served us didn’t put the order in, nothing was coming.. I asked her and blankly was told I never ordered anything, she asked to see my receipt, I showed on my banking app I paid £20 to be told she never served us despite being the only people in the cafe to have come in. Eventually the manager comes over, we explain. He apologies gets the order. However I had protest when he explains a Turkey panini will be 10.95.. not value for money at all, he did refunds for the difference of a normal panini but even at 7:95 it was expensive. I had an empire biscuit it was too soft and crumbled to bits and was too sweet. We were not greeted even with a hello when we arrived. The server looked bored, wasn’t listening clearly and didn’t even bother to order and proceeded to deny serving us to our faces. We did not enjoy the experience at all and should have gone to the one further up but we gave this one a go. Understand mistakes are made but to deny serving and argue I didn’t order and ask for my receipt I can only hope it’s a one of and not a regular occurrence.

The shop is not really on the main square so people can miss it, this cafe is definitely worth visiting, no loud music etc, table arranged within good distance. My fiancé and I found ourselves in Ballatar today, chilled by the cold wintery weather and hungry for some warming food and a welcoming atmosphere. Realising we'd stopped right outside the Bridge House Cafe, in we went. They evidently have a great host of offerings - the plates in front of other diners dealt me food-envy before we reached the counter. After a lot of belly-rumbling angst simplicity won the day. A haggis, cheese and chutney toastie for me and a coronation chicken toastie for my partner...we both had (excellent!) homemade tomato soup on the side...plus another classic cheese and ham toastie to share. All was top-notch but I'll give special recommendation for the haggis toastie. Really hit the spot and, clearly, high quality haggis. Coffees were also pretty perfect (we had a latte and a flat white) and there's a heap of non-dairy milk options, too. Will definitely be back. A few hours have passed so I'm getting hungry again...!

We asked for the breakfast without beans and it came ( after waiting a very long time ) and was smothered in beans, I ordered a tomato soup but was given a potato and leek, Soup was then changed over and honestly the soup wasn’t great really lacked flavour. Staff were rude apart from the man who served us at the till who seemed to be the owner, not sure? Menu was very very limited compared to last year which is disappointing as the menu used to be amazing!! One of the members of staff actually took our dogs water bowl and gave it to another table without asking which we felt was incredibly rude. Also very overpriced for what we received, i don’t generally leave reviews but i really hope you take it as constructive criticism as we used to absolutely love this place and would come for breakfast / lunch everytime we stay in ballater! The staff (who were little more than children) didn't know what a regular coffee was. I had to break down the process of putting some coffee in a cup and putting some milk in a separate jug. On top of the coffee, we had tea for two and a plain scone which came to nearly £12. Watching a young lad shuffling across the floor with trays of food and drink slopping over the tray was reminiscent of Mrs Overall from Acorn Antiques. I'm sure that the staff would be more than capable if someone bothered to train them the basics. Having fought successfully through Covid with friendly staff in medical grade PPE, they have changed their menu and format. Gone are the lovely burgers, pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, sundaes etc. along with the friendly staff taking orders at tables. Now there is just a counter at the back where you order from the limited menu. Staff said it was not under new ownership but they had just made changes. We tried the chicken bacon Caesar wraps with salad and tortilla crisps but were very disappointed. Wraps themselves were OK but not sure what they had put on the salad. Seemed like a little lettuce with a lot of potato salad and what suspect might have been Couscous but it was not on the menu. We didn’t like whatever it was. Whilst we were not affected, there was no information regarding allergies. Food was brought to table but whilst they were not busy, nobody came back to ask if everything was OK. With just Cokes to drink, £35 for three people did not seem great value either and we won’t be returning to what used to be one of our favourite restaurants

Having fought successfully through Covid with friendly staff in medical grade PPE, they have changed their menu and format. Gone are the lovely burgers, pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, sundaes etc. along with the friendly staff taking orders at tables. Now there is just a counter at...

The food we got was pretty nice and most of us enjoyed what we got, however they got one of our orders wrong and the soup wasn't very nice considering the high price point. Two of us had smoothies which were very nice but quote...

Great place to sit and chill, it has the usual cafe fare, there are plenty of tables without it feeling cramped there is a shop next door (accessible through the cafe without going outside) which stocks a miriad of products, some great gifts to take home. Toilets are available to the rear of the shop. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented.

I enjoyed the food that i got.. I was stunned at the price however. We ordered the following; 3 rolls and sausage (two with potato scone) 3 teas It cost us just over £27.. Absolutley shocking prices for something so simple. When I was in they had ran out of sausage after 11.30am for other customers. The two of them just left. In hindsight I wish I had done the same. I could of went to another local cafe that had reasonable prices.

Lovely place. Cosy. Reasonably priced. Perfect portions and most importantly, phenomenal food. This was clearly the best food we had during our 6 day holiday in Scotland. The taste is just perfect, no matter what you order. Our group of 8, including elderlies and kids, were all equally satisfied and happy with the food, ambience and service at this place. The staff is ever smiling and accomodated our preferences. We ordered the following and everything was just yum yum.. Mushroom soup Parsnip soup Mushroom and cheese toastie Falafel sandwich Chicken coronation sandwich Nutella croissant Onion and tomato quiche Falafel bowl

What a shame. Travelled 65 miles to get breakfast as I loved the last time I was there. What a waste.

We were passing through Ballater and fancied a spot of lunch. The window display enticed us in, it has such a homely feel to it and the staff were very friendly. I enjoyed a tuna and cheese toastie with homemade soup. So comforting and tasty!...

I visited the cafe with family for breakfast. My cooked Scottish breakfast was probably the best I've had in many years. Carefully wrought scrambled eggs, butchers square sausage, the tattie scones tasted home made. The haggis and blackpudding were astounding, and all washed down with...

The Scottish hospitality industry is not noted for its customer service or friendliness. The norm is to treat customers with contempt. This place breaks that mould.
