Came here for steak night tonight and it was lovely! The Friday steak night is a definite must! For less than £20 you can get a decent sized steak of your choice and a pint, the steak can either be cooked by the in house chef or it can be cooked by you. If you request it you can have your steak brought out to you on a plate raw and you are then provided a hot (and by hot I mean searing hot) stone slab which you can use to fine tune your steak to your liking. Each steak comes with a generous side of chunky steak chips and salad with really tasty salad dressing on top, I can be a bit of a picky eater sometimes but by the time I had finished my plate was completely barren, not a crumb left it was that good. 😃 As for the rest of the pub, the atmosphere when I went was very calm with ambient music, which was nice because you could talk to people without issue but the pub had some character to it, the barman who served me was friendly and happy to serve customers. The beer garden out the back was lovely too, nice and quiet with a pond nearby to watch the ducks on whilst eating in the evening sun. I didn't realize until I had sat down that the beer garden actually stretched the whole way around the side and to the side of the car park. So there is ample room for all people and all group sizes. 😃 5/5 Would recommend if you are interested in eating a nice sized steak and having a laid back evening. 😃

Lovely welcome from all staff. Indian food was definitely up there with the best. Butter chicken, raita, railway lamb - platters are fabulous and great value. Raita was delicious, we will divert our usual route from Eastbourne to stop here!! Loved it!

Went there for lunch yesterday. Very disappointed. Had the Sea Bass which was very nicely cooked. However, the presentation let them down very badly. 3 big potatoes in their skins (supposedly new potatoes ha!ha!) with the fish on top of them. As for the vegetables least said the better Will not be going back there in a hurry.

Popped into The Bell for dinner tonight and we were all very pleased with the reception, the ambiance and the delicious grub. Unpretentious but delicious and interesting. Lovely atmosphere even though quiet on a Tuesday evening. We will be back!

We were greeted at the bar as soon as we arrived. The staff were polite and friendly. Our food was tasty and the onion rings were amazing (made from scratch). The chef checked if we were happy with the food and offered for us to have more drinks served to the table. We would come back again.

If you are expecting a modern and polished dining establishment , go elsewhere. This place is a true, timeless local pub. Sussex Best on tap and a merry environment that guarantees a good time for all. Would heartily recommend to those seeking a warm, rustic pub with cheerful service.

I know Burgh house well and always enjoy the museum and the art exhibitions. I had high hopes of the Buttery which has been nicely refurbished but I’m afraid both the food and the service were a big disappointment when I brought three friends for lunch last week. It wasn’t very busy and we were seated immediately inside and but no one brought menus, so we had to go and find them. Two of us asked for soup and a savoury scone and cheese but were told “we only have fruit scones “ as though they would go with soup! Bread was not such an interesting substitute. We waited a good half hour for the food to arrive. The soup itself billed as sweet potatoand coconut was frankly tasteless (we both agreed). I had asked for Cornish yarg but what arrived was Brie. When I pointed this out the waitress replied “aren’t they the same??” And “no one else has complained”. She added that they had run out of brie. Another friend ordered a mature cheddar sandwich but said the cheese tasted more like a processed cheese slice. Again no apology or offer to meet the chef. I fear there is a lack of communication within the kitchen. A dispiriting experience
