Me and my girlfriend went for lunch and unfortunately there was some kind of mix up with my girlfriend’s order. She had ordered a chicken dish and whilst we waited for our orders to come, she spoke about the dish she had ordered as she’d had it before in other establishments and she hoped it would be as nice. She also told me she’d had a brief but nice chat with the young guy who took her order at the counter. When her dish arrived, a short while after mine, it was clearly not chicken. In fact it was duck. We were both hungry and I suggested it looked nice but at that point as my girlfriend, who never orders duck, was considering whether to settle for the duck, an older woman who looked like she might be the chef told my girlfriend she’d been standing behind the young man as my girlfriend placed her order and she’d quite clearly heard my girlfriend order duck not chicken. My girlfriend challenged this assertion and made it clear she’d ordered chicken not duck but the older woman stuck to her guns and insisted she’d heard my girlfriend order the duck. My girlfriend became understandably agitated and insisted they serve her the chicken dish she’d ordered but the woman repeated duck was ordered not chicken. It was then that I decided we should leave the cafe as it felt to me as though my girlfriend was being accused of being stupid or a liar. Misunderstandings can happen but I felt the older lady handled the situation badly and it was better to leave than insist on a replacement meal or a refund. My girlfriend wasn’t happy with me as she felt she was perfectly within her right to insist they serve her what she ordered plus she’d paid for the meal. I persuaded her to leave and I paid for a replacement meal at the Thai restaurant next door. So we had paid for two meals and two soft drinks but left without getting a refund or the dish my girlfriend had ordered. This could well be an obscure one off but I’d advise other customers to ask the order taker to confirm what has been ordered before paying.
