We stayed in Annie the shepherd's hut, what an amazing experience, we stayed 2 nights. It was a pure chill/relax time after 2 very difficult years. We can honestly say we chilled and relaxed. The hut is warm and we didn't use the log burner, we even had a window open during the night. The bed is sooooo comfortable and the quilt was to die for. The bed was more comfortable than some hotel beds we have slept on. Thank you for the lovely welcome basket, so thoughtful. We ate in the pub on Tuesday night always the welcome from Jayne and Miles was as friendly and warm as normal. The food as always was tasty, hot and delicious. Special thanks to Alice a real trooper and obviously a big part of the Butchers Arms team. See you soon, even though its a short drive from Swindon it was definitely money well spent. XX ❤❤

We stopped here for lunch, what a mistake. I ordered the lasagna salad and chips, the lasagna wasn't in a dish, it was just a tiny little square with little or no taste. The salad with salad cream was something from the 70's. What a disappointment, not like your normal pub grub fare these days. Other people had cold jacket potatoes and wrong orders. It shouldn't really be happening these days......

In a very scenic part of the world, the Slad valley has a charm all of its own. Deeply wooded valleys and streams make it ideal walking country; you'll certainly work up an appetite and thirst climbing up the slopes and wending your way through the little hamlets that pepper the hillsides. So, where to go? The Woolpack is an obvious choice, offering a range of good local beers and dishes that include classic bar snacks, and more substantial meals in the restaurant. The pub itself is an unpretentious set of rooms where everyone can feel comfortable, with simple stripped tables and chairs and various local photographs and memorabilia - including the inevitable collection devoted to the life and works of Laurie Lee. The food on offer is a bit more imaginative than usual, but not excessively so (no "concept dishes", thank goodness). Everything seems fresh and is well presented by the very welcoming and friendly staff. The only slightly negative comment I would make is that, along with several other reviewers, I found the prices slightly higher than might be expected. Perhaps this comes with the struggle in running a pub these days, but it's a fine balance between running close to deficit and putting people off. On the day of our visit the pub was pretty busy, so perhaps they have judged their market correctly.

Very polite staff accommodated two scruffy walkers for a last minute afternoon tea in their comfortable well decorated lounge - excellent quality food and we weren’t left hungry which is often the case in London where we live. You absolutely get what you pay for, we’ll be visiting again if we’re in the area.
