The Black Horse Inn in Stroud

A fantastic local village pub in Cranham. Whenever I pay a visit I am struck by the warm welcome by owners David and Julie. The food is fantastic and a great range of ales available. I feel the need to add this review as I was also present when a previous reviewer arrived too late for food and felt this was reason enough to leave a poor review. Sour grapes from this person, who despite being treated with courtesy has attempted to leave an unfair review. Keep doing what you're doing so well please Black Horse

I too was sat at the bar when the Negative poster “RT” asked for a Menu and was told Food had finished. Perhaps the reply that Food had Finished had caused him to “take the hump”. I personally eat at this establishment 2 Lunchtimes a week having used it frequently until David and Julie decided to lease the business out about 2010? When I realised they'd taken over the reins again last year I was back like a shot, in the knowledge that I could enjoy good Ale and superb Homemade Food (and sometimes endure the Landlords “corny jokes”). This is the first bad Report I’ve come across either verbally or on a website. I personally will continue to use The Black Horse until at least the time it sadly passes ownership later in the year. At which time I will wish David and Julie a very well deserved Happy Retirement!!

I was at the bar when the previous reviewer came in. My experience was different, it was very busy at Easter & my Guinness & ale pie was great. The dry humoured person had agreed to do two large groups after the cut off 2pm, then he walked in and was told no. This is a very good country pub with ales. If you are in a bad mood don't come in.

Very slow service at the bar and when it eventually became my turn I asked for a menu. Yhis was at approximately 2:20pm. The man behind the bar (Landlord?) laughed and said "we're not doing lunch anymore". Minutes earlier he had been discussing food orders with those ahead of me There are many ways he could have handled this. Most obviously, "I'm so sorry we stop Don't go here! So many good pubs in the area: The Falcon in Painsiwck is great and the Royal William on the main A46 a few minutes away is helpful and polite with food all day.

A wonderful pub with proper grub. We stayed in the village and had two evenings at the pub. Friday night was all about the food, the locals and the dogs. A great evening and a warm welcome. Saturday night the fire was lit and the beers were flowing. Well worth a visit.

Such a lovely pub/restaurant. What a friendly welcome too. We were staying in the village and decided to have a night ‘at the local’. What a find. Brilliant local people and fabulous food and beverages. We had a Guinness and ale pie and Lamb Chops. All freshly made and all local. Special mention to David and Helen who welcomed us and treated us like kings the whole evening. Support this business, it’s all good.

Roaring log fire, an amazing meal and a warm welcome. The Black Horse Inn has a broad menu that caters for different tastes, we opted for beautiful ham egg and Chips and tender beef and Guinness pie. Really tasty... we will be back

should you fancy great walks in a beautiful place and a typical traditional Cotswold pub this is the place! everyone's food looked terrific - landlord very very friendly and doing a great job in what has been trying times - no vegan choices but not a problem for us - veggie choices and fantastic faggots and chips-,very friendly for dog walkers

Phoned yesterday after a very cold dog walk.told to come straight along. Had beef and pork and opted for larger portions plus cauliflower cheese. As ever, our food was sublime, everything was perfect. I love the feel of this pub! Thankyou for making another perfect Sunday.

We called this morning to see if there was space for lunch and although they were fully booked they squeezed us in for an early lunch. It was well worth it. Everything was delicious, I had the roast pork and my partner the nut roast. Service was excellent and the atmosphere in the pub is lovely. Thank you!

Visited again yesterday for Sunday lunch. We booked at 2.00pm as told they were busy earlier. Arrived at 1.50pm and it was extremely busy. Ordered our food and as there was a mix up had rather a long wait...the food especially the beef and pork were outstanding! Veggies freshly cooked and plenty of lovely roasties. We have our gravy separately and that was delicious too. The Landlord came and apologised for delay, which was good of him... we will be up there soon again! Great country pub!

Visited this evening and we were very impressed with our meals. Everything was cooked well, with lovely fresh vegetables and extremely generous portion sizes. I had the faggots and my husband had the roast lamb. We were too full to eat puddings!

What a lovely classic English Country Pub. A wonderful building, a warm fire, excellent service and lovely food from local produce. My idea of how a rural village pub should be. Sadly you don't find many that do it to this quality. Highly recommended.

El personal fue muy amable y hay una gran selección de comida y bebida. 3 de nosotros optamos por una baguette que estaba llena hasta el borde con rellenos y muy sabrosa. Solo visitamos para tomar algo, nos sentamos afuera y nos sorprendió cuando la pareja en la mesa de al lado se fue y cuando la mesa se despejó, no se limpió ni se serilizó en ningún momento. Debido a covid esto debería haber sido limpiado, etc. Estuvimos allí por lo menos 30 minutos después de que la pareja se fue y en ningún momento se limpió. Esto necesita ser analizado.

The place was heaving with locals, which added to a warm and friendly atmosphere! Staff accommodated we visitors with warmth, humour and efficiency. Roast Beef dinner was enormous and delicious! Service was excellent and would certainly recommend!

Wide range of lunchtime food including 3 'vege' options, sandwiches etc. Food was lovely - service was attentive and friendly. Food was not quick arriving but was obviously freshly prepared. Arrived at 12.30 to an empty pub but by 1.30 is was busy.

Visited today for a Sunday lunch and can honestly say it's the best roast dinner I have had when eating out in a long time. I had roast lamb and my partner had the roast beef; the food was amazing (especially the gravy and roast potatoes). The ambience of the pub was delightful and the landlord and waiting staff were so accommodating and helpful. Also a lovely bonus that dogs are welcome. I would have loved a dessert but was too full from the delicious roast. We will definitely be returning soon. Thank you.

We have been staying close to the pub for a few weeks and have visited a few of the local pubs recently and this is a really great pub. I understand that the young landlords and quite new to the pub, but based on our experience when we visited it going to be a huge success. We hope so. Firstly the beers are very well kept, the Tom Long from Stoud Brewery was perfect. The food was delicious, I had a Wagu burger with homemade chips and it was really good. The pub is quite small so its worth booking a table and we had visited on a Tuesday Lunchtime and it was packed. The menu isn't too big which I like because its clear that everything is fresh. It did take a long time to come to the table but I am sure that they will sort those issues as time goes on. I really hope that The Black Horse is successful because we are losing these unique pubs and this a lovely example of what a Great British Pub is all about.

Just returned from enjoying an excellent ‘homemade’ Sunday roast dinner . We have tried quite a few pubs around Gloucestershire in search of the Holy Grail of roasts and this so far is the best we’ve had . Newish owners , a young couple , served a top notch dinner with everyone of our party of five leaving very happy and very full .Very friendly atmosphere, nice warm open fire , and the waitresses were also really professional and courteous ! We should mention the cauliflower cheese as a side order - 10 out 10 !! Shame we didn’t have any room to try the puddings , next time .

Nos detuvimos en el Black Horse Inn para el almuerzo del domingo, y estuvimos muy contentos de haberlo hecho. La comida era ideal, había un montón de cosas, y el ambiente en el pub era acogedor y cálido en un día frío. Servicio amable por parte del personal y fuego de leña real para un almuerzo perfecto. Muy recomendable, una vez que logras encontrarlo. Hay una señal en la carretera principal, pero cuando visitamos, no hay señales una vez que entras en el pueblo. Vale la pena una visita.

We visited for Sunday lunch. I can highly recommend the roast lamb, and the puddings are to die for. There is a lovely open fire, the staff are friendly and the pud has a really welcoming atmosphere. A return trip will definitely be made.

A GREAT pub - lovely friendly clientele makes for a fantastic atmosphere. Very welcoming by all the staff and new owners Emma and James. Mi esposa y yo acabamos de pasar unas semanas de vacaciones en Cranham y usamos el Caballo Negro en cuatro ocasiones. Almorzamos el domingo con ellos, que era un buen asado de carne a la antigua. No nos podemos quejar de la comida o el servicio muy amable. Una buena selección de cervezas, muy bien presentada. Bien hecho a todos los presentes, nos hicieron sentir muy bienvenidos.

Great dog friendly lunch stop in this lovely village near the Cotswold Way. Was given a very warm welcome by the landlady; very refreshing to visit a traditional pub. There was even an original push ha'penny table there. Amazing place.

We have been frequenting this pub for a while and the recent take over by the new owners, Emma and James, is like a breath of fresh air. The food is plentiful, and as good as ever, and the atmosphere is as friendly as you'll find in any local village pub. If you want good food, good beer and a good time then please look no further.

After a hike through mud wind and rain what a welcome retreat from the elements. Lovely pub with great food...so good had to have pudding too and what a pudding. The food was fantastic roast dinner with gluten free Yorkshire puds now that's rare and the veg selection and quality was perfect. Puddings big enough for two but far too good to share.

We had a fantastic time. The food was first class as was the service. We will certainly be back very soon. Thank you to all the staff who went the extra mile to ensure first class service.

The owners have taken back the pub from a tenant and this truly traditional friendly pub is now back in its former glory as a prize place on a 'must visit' again list. The food, the atmosphere and the bar humour makes it a best choice for me anytime. It is wise to book in advance. Feb 2019

Stayed a week in the area and was advised to visit the black horse for drinks as a change of management had taken place.It is a cosy pub with a good selection of ales and beers. At the time we decided not to have food as it was approaching 4 oclock but understand that food is excellent both in the variety and cost

Turned up to the pub at 12:30 today having heard the old team were back in charge. Walked up from Gloucester to find the place totally shut up. No signs or anything to explain why it wasn't open as was advertised on all online resources. We went hungry and thirsty back to where we came. So disappointed. As were others who had turned up hoping for a visit. Communications really need to improve.

After reading that the Black Horse was now back on track we decided to visit on Saturday evening. On arrival we were told that no real ales were available and that our table had not been reserved. The menu only consisted of 5 dishes. My husband chose the Burger and when it arrived it was raw and cold in the middle. The waitress told us that this is how all burgers are served! We asked for another to be cooked and for it to be well done. This eventually arrived. After finishing our meal we were told that no puddings were available so we paid our bill and left! I have done some research on the internet and it clearly states that you should NEVER eat burgers that are undercooked because of food poisoning! I would be interested to hear the owners comments about this please!

Great delight that 'The Horse' in Cranham is back again after a recent decline. There's a great range of well-kept ales and the food is beautifully prepared and delicious with an increasing range of dishes - a brilliant village pub.

I was invited to join family, friends and locals for the chance to sample the wares of two talented local chefs, Joe and Elliott. They had been invited by the owners, Julie and David, to assess the feasibility of guesting twice a week at this small very traditional local pub.

Lovely roast and a Lancashire hotpot for tea, pub back in all its glory thanks to Dave and Julie being back in charge. Need to book though as food not available every night!

Had lunch here yesterday and fantastic faultless Sunday Roast. Hot plates generous portions beautiful and well cooked beef delicious gravy and vegetables. Very welcoming behind bar and serving staff delightful attentive and cheerful. So good to see pub back to former glory under David and Julies helm. I would suggest that any previous negative comments that where posted before owners back in charge are ignored as ever since the pub back in their hands from around 6 weeks ago you can expect great food great ales range of wines and drinks and a warm welcome. After several years of disastrous management the BH is now back in the hands of the old owners, thank goodness. A "free house" serving excellent real ales and traditional home cooked food is a rarity nowadays, now everywhere else has "gone gastro". In these days of sameness the Black Horse is a one off, well worth a visit if you can find it, I suggest you phone first if you want to eat , and always closed on Mondays. Having said that my experience was memorable , excellent beer and very friendly locals.

I cannot express in words how wonderful it is to see the Black Horse back in capable hands. The atmosphere was back instantly and I am looking forward to eating there once again. For all of those people that experienced such an awful time over the last year, please come back and see how fantastic our village pub is. ☺

Walking in the area on a cold bright Sunday, we stopped here for lunch at 1pm. Empty other than the barman. We asked for a coffee to warm up, but were told they didn't serve coffee. So, seeing the menu on the blackboard we asked about food and were told that there was no food until Wednesday! We ordered a drink and asked for nuts. We had the only packet of nuts in the place, drank up and left. Another 3 miles to the lovely pub in Sheepscombe where we were made very welcome and enjoyed a superb Sunday roast. So, ignore the website and TripAdvisor details and avoid!

We, a group of five people went there for christmas lunch. The food was average, a bit expensive but quantity was very good. The restaurant was cozy with nice ambiance. We were staying in an accommodation just behind the pub, so was very convenient.

If I could give a 0 rating I would. Disgusted and so sad at how what was a fantastic country pub has been completely ruined. The heart, soul and history of this pub has and continues to be being bled dry. Gone are the staff who not only knew you by name but also made newcomers feel like they were as old friends. Gone is the standard of food that tasted Devine, filled your belly and enticed you to return. Gone is the excellent service and gone are the regular customers.
