Absolutely delicious food, lovely friendly staff, very dog friendly (we weren’t in the restaurant because they have a separate section for people with dogs) there was a lovely warm fire and the place just gave off lovely vibes with throws and sheepskins in case you were cold. All the food was top nosh! And although we couldn’t manage all the cauliflower cheese they offered us a doggy bag before we even asked! An absolute find and a nice stomp to see the Roman villa nearby before hand, parking up to the right.

What a little gem this pub is! It has changed a lot since I first went there 44 years ago, although the main bar that I knew looks just the same. We've eaten there a few times this year and just can't fault it. Great service, well kept ale and delicious, but not overpriced menu. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. It is quite small though, so I imagine that booking ahead would be essential.

The Black horse was a great find. Ours wasn’t a planned visit but a “let’s get a pub lunch” after an abandoned shopping trip. Tucked away with a car park just up the hill it is a small gem with well kept beer and fabulous food. We had ham and egg which was the best we’ve had for a long long time. Made us wonder what desserts were like, which we didn’t need but had some anyway 😆 Flavours of main & dessert were subtle but perfect. We’re already planning our next visit with friends. A couple of reviews have mentioned the fire not being lit. It was the same when we were there (in the lower room), it was a bit chilly at first but there were many throws on chairs, I used one of those on my knees for about 10 mins and it was fine. We’re assuming there is a genuine reason for the fire not being used eg. maybe hasn’t got the relevant H&S certificate

We normally hike to the pub & treat ourselves to a cheeky drink but after continuously admiring the seasonal menu we decided to book a table to eat for our anniversary. The food was exceptional!! An absolute taste sensation & I would highly recommend anyone who is a food lover to dine here. The chef’s clearly have an high attention to detail & you can tell love, thought, craft & skill has gone into each dish. We did not even have to touch the salt & pepper as everything was seasoned to taste! We were greeted by friendly staff & a cosy feel with fires lit in each room. The pub has been beautifully restored with nods to its original heritage cannot wait to dine there again in the future.

This review is specifically about customer service. The new renovation was very inviting, cosy and seemed perfect for a Sunday roast. A small group of us had planned a walk to the pub to have a Sunday Roast. On the 9th of November I booked a table for 12:15 but called the next evening to change the timing to 13:30, a week in advance. There was no confusion in communication and all seemed absolutely fine, the women I spoke to confirmed the timing I had changed the booking too. When we arrived there was no record of the change in time. The young women serving us said they were expecting us at 12:15 so we'd missed our slot and there was no way they could fit us in. She was dismissive of the fact that I'd said I'd called to change it and clearly felt it was our error. When asked who I spoke with I'd said I don't know but it was a women, to which she replied in a condescending manner 'well that doesn't help'. In this circumstance a simple apology for the error is all that's needed. We had to ask for our drinks to be on the house. Basic training is needed here. Sadly I can't comment on the food but it did look lovely.

Had Sunday lunch here recently after not visiting for a long time due to various reasons. It was delicious, portions are large so forego the starters unless you have a big appetite. All roasts come with Yorkshire pudding, roasted veg/potatoes, gravy/sauce and you can order cauliflower cheese as a side. This is probably the best cauliflower cheese we've ever had in a pub. There are options for people who dont want a roast, we particularly recommend the risotto. Dessert was also fantastic, especially the dark chocolate delice. During my recent visit to The Black Horse in Cranham, Gloucester, I was so impressed by the food and drink, making this charming pub a must-visit for any food enthusiast. I wanted to try a selection of food for lunch, so between 2 people we shared a main and three light bites. It was more than enough food! The buratta with candied peanuts was heavenly. The creamy buratta was perfectly balanced by the sweet crunch of the candied peanuts. I enjoyed the grilled courgette with tahini. The courgette was cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of char, and the tahini added a rich, nutty depth that complemented the vegetable beautifully. I don't usually choose sweet potato, but it was one of the highlights for me. The sweet potato was wonderfully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, while the romesco sauce added a slightly smoky flavour, it was delicious. HOWEVER, the star of the show had to be the courgette and pecorino risotto. The risotto was so creamy and seasoned to perfection. It was topped with some sweet, juicy softened tomato's that did the perfect job of cutting through the lush richness. Then the pickled feta was a gorgeous tang. I enjoyed a Wolfpack pilsner which was so refreshing and delicious. I was super impressed by the drink selection. You can tell that both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic offerings have been carefully considered. Plus, the staff were so friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. You might just think this is 'another village pub' but I couldn't recommend it enough. You would never know how great the food, drinks and staff are until you get in there! Plus the location is beautiful so it's a great bonus. I just wish I lived closer to The Black Horse!

Popped in for a mid week lunch. The pub has recently been bought by the community and refurbished beautifully, keeping all of the old character, whilst providing a much needed refresh. The main bar area has been opened to create more space and a sense of airiness. The lunch menu was a nice mix of classics done to a high standard and it was good to see several groups eating. I am coeliac, but the chef was happy to adapt menu items as everything is cooked fresh to order. I had a gluten free scotch egg with a delicious sweet potato side, my wife had a honeyed brie sandwich with chips and my daughter had the soup. The food was excellent and reasonably priced for high quality pub food. Will definitely be back and highly recommend a visit, especially if you haven’t been to the Black Horse for a while.

I too was sat at the bar when the Negative poster “RT” asked for a Menu and was told Food had finished. Perhaps the reply that Food had Finished had caused him to “take the hump”. I personally eat at this establishment 2 Lunchtimes a week having used it frequently until David and Julie decided to lease the business out about 2010? When I realised they'd taken over the reins again last year I was back like a shot, in the knowledge that I could enjoy good Ale and superb Homemade Food (and sometimes endure the Landlords “corny jokes”). This is the first bad Report I’ve come across either verbally or on a website. I personally will continue to use The Black Horse until at least the time it sadly passes ownership later in the year. At which time I will wish David and Julie a very well deserved Happy Retirement!!

Special mention to David and Helen who welcomed us and treated us like kings the whole evening. Support this business, it’s all good.

Called in wednesday 23rd February, 2022 at 12.15 pm for lunch found both main doors locked, we got fed up & came away & went on to Syrlud & found somewhere else where we got a very nice lunch. Sorry i will not be coming back in a hurry. Parking was differcult here, i was very tired as a few months before i had had a stroke so i was looking forward to a nice feed . Maybe they were closed as many & family thought they were closed not sure though as i could hear noise from the kitchen .

Roaring log fire, an amazing meal and a warm welcome. The Black Horse Inn has a broad menu that caters for different tastes, we opted for beautiful ham egg and Chips and tender beef and Guinness pie. Really tasty... we will be back

should you fancy great walks in a beautiful place and a typical traditional Cotswold pub this is the place! everyone's food looked terrific - landlord very very friendly and doing a great job in what has been trying times - no vegan choices but not a problem for us - veggie choices and fantastic faggots and chips-,very friendly for dog walkers

I'm sorry to say, that after reading great reviews and having high expectations of what to expect....the experience was a huge disappointment. 6 of us booked in for Sunday dinner at 2pm,which started well,to be honest....as we were given a choice of the main room or a table set up for 6,in a separate room. We opted for the separate room and took our seats accordingly. After awhile a man came through to take our drinks order and I went 1st....."a o% Guinness please" sorry we don't have that "but I do at my other pub" OK then "could I have an elderflower please" ...."sorry we don't have that" again was the reply OK...."could I have a lime & soda please"....."sorry can't do that due to the trigger on the mixer not working" was the reply. OK...."could I have a lager shandy please"....."sorry can't do that either came the now familiar reply! By this time,it was getting embarrassing in front of the other's waiting to order their drinks and exacerbated,on the point of dehydration....I ordered a tap water.....which along with a gin & flat tonic didn't have ice in. Then.....dinner arrived. I had ordered the 3 meat roast, pork, beef & chicken (£23.50) and my expectations were high....well sadly it wasn't to be. The 3 meat roast consisted of a slice of pork,a slice of beef and a chicken leg plonked on the top...how bizarre! The meal itself was only warm and not piping hot as I would have expected.....after the drinks fiasco,I didn't feel able to complain without drawing attention myself in front of the other members of our party at the table. Finally....the bill came and as well as charging us for £2 for a lime & soda which I couldn't have, an £18 plus service charge had been added to the bill. That was the final insult.....£18 service charge for what exactly?? No drinks of choice and a luke warm meal. I wanted to dispute the service charge but again....I didn't want to draw attention to myself and possibly put my other party members in an embarrassing situation. I would like it refunded to be honest, as another issue I encountered while there....no soap in the soap dispenser despite visiting the toilet at the start of our meal and then again an hour or so later after the meal. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't eat there again or recommend to others to do so either......maybe it was "just a bad day at the office" for the pub on the day of our visit, but then the service shouldn't have been added automatically,if all of the above had been taken in to consideration.

Last time visited “ small Americana “ was 1.95. Then 2.10. Today……2.60. No reason despite costs…..to elevate to this price… There are unfortunately not a lot of “ good coffee shops in Dursley” could do with “Costa” or Coffee1 “ Wake up call……for these stupid prices…..if you want to “ stay open” I’d review all your prices/ ….or you soon will be “ gone” No one wants to fell “ conned” last visit for me!!

Lovely traditional English inn. Quirky spacious rooms furnished with antique furniture, pub and restaurant downstairs. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinner delicious, generous portions. And not expensive at all! So much so that we stayed there twice in February.
