Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Great food and service. But… Prices were a bit higher than expected. The only toilet is outside, the lock doesn’t work, there was no soap and it was dirty. Staff didn’t seem to care and said “oh”. But apart from the toilet issues it was good.

My gorgeous lady wife randomly spotted a view of Ullswater posted on Facebook by Bill Bailey, and thoughts turned to a quick visit to The Lakes, where I grew up but Karen hadn't visited. My old home town of Grange- over-Sands that I departed manh moons ago was selected as a base for our two night break and after a bit of judicious Tripadvisoring we picked on the Commodore Inn for it's location, bay views and frankly astounding value (I was so surprised by our two night 'Winter Warmer' deal, booked on the hotel's own website, that I rang the hotel to check it was correct!). We arrived mid-afternoon on the Sunday (joys of being retired is that we can be flexible), parked in the public car park right in front of the hotel and checked in. The welcome was warm and inviting, as was our recently refurbished room (The Captain's Quarters) with a comfy bed, good bathroom and two chairs positioned to sip coffee and take in the stunning views out over Morecambe Bay. Our first night dinner and a bottle of wine were included the deal and food was top rate pub grub, with portions so generous that, with the help of some helpfully provided takeaway containers, we had a picnic sorted for the next day! Breakfast was also good and plentiful, and could not fault the friendly and attentive service from all the staff. All in all an excellent, great value location, with good grub and friendly staff. Just note the portion sizes and don't over order!

A stunning little cafe set in the grounds of Holker Hall. We called in for a cuppa and sweet treats after spending the afternoon wandering around the grounds. We were lucky enough to have a glorious autumn day, so were able to sit out in the courtyard, which is beautiful. The staff were amazing, so friendly. The prices were good too, I was actually surprised at how reasonable it was, given the location. I had a pot of tea and shortbread, which was to die for! Such a wonderful little spot, it’s a must try when in the area.
