From the delicious nibbles in the bar, through the outstanding scallops and celeriac purée with chorizo to the stunning beef wellington with pommes boulangères and spring veg, this was one of the best restaurant meals I have had in a long time. Traditional in all the right ways, this restaurant serves the kind of food I love. Wines are great too. Highly recommended.

A lovely little cafe but with excellent food at good reasonable prices served by friendly and jolly staff and very well situated from the main car park in Sturminster Newton (Stur) Also don't forget to buy their lovely Turkish Delight.

Friendly welcome. Yummy Mocha and good toastie. Nice light space. Clean. Good Wifi. Plenty of parking. Shared a Gluten free slice, not so nice, but that's a very personal thing as I am not gluten free, SO a positive that this is on offer.

£13.95 for a large breakfast, doesn’t even come with black pudding or toast as that’s extra, £1.75 for a slice of black pudding, £1.50 for a slice of toast, seriously a loaf bread is £2 max for a top brand loaf, save your money and go elsewhere. £9.95 for a club sandwich. A sandwich! Noticed the children’s menu, £4 pretty much £5-£6. Doesn’t even include a drink in the price, not even a cheap glass of squash. It’s a cafe in a local “supermarket” not 4* restaurant.

We've had lunch here a few times in summer so decided to have dinner one evening. It was okay but nothing more than that and very expensive for the standard of cooking, especially when compared to nearby similar pubs like The White Horse or The Fiddleford Inn. Everything was as described but the absolute bare bones of it so the sirloin steak was about 30% fat and only came with one smallish mushroom and half a tomato and chips, the fillet was about half the size you would normally get and the fruit crumble amounted to 4 spoonsful for £8, and the price for our puddings was actually £2.50 more than on the online menu. You can get away with small portions if the food is imaginative and cooked to a high standard but this wasn't and we could have made the whole meal to a similar standard at home for a fifth of the price.

The Trooper's Sunday Roast is absolutely superb! It was beyond fault, both for quality and presentation, and we were very pleasantly surprised by the intimacy and cosiness of this little pub – a rare gem indeed! It is quite small inside (although there is outdoor dining for those who prefer that). Thus, there isn't the type of Sunday Roast 'pick & mix' buffet one is accumstomed to in many pubs; the main course is 'plated up' and served complete at one's table, but it is none the worse for that. To say that the portions are gargantuan is an understatement, well presented and cooked to perfection. No inedible al dente vegetables at The Trooper!

Great food as always. But be aware when ordering online you pay over a pound more per dish. And a service charge. So although collected as normal cost us nearly £5 more for a couple of dishes.
