Some very positive great things about the Bathhurst Arms as a food venue, but still some room for improvement. The interior of the pub is much cosier than many pubs in winter, with wood burners, but some steps between rooms which are tricky for elderly or less mobile customers. The staff were friendly & professional and service prompt. We went for Sunday lunch. The food was piping hot & portion size good. We had one vegan in our party, who is willing to eat vegetarian when out to make things simpler. Also one who is gluten intolerant. However, the vegan fared much better, despite prior warning in writing when booking online. The gluten free meal ended up just a standard meal with various components removed, but no offer to reduce the price accordingly. They were not offered a g/f alternative menu. Even the roast potatoes were not g/f! 2 meals accidentally had items removed. Would strongly recommend phoning beforehand if you have any special dietary requirements just to make sure they can meet them. Otherwise a great place and lovely space for outdoor eating by the River Churn in summer. The carpark does need redesigning/ extending though. Would be very difficult to park on a busy summer’s day.

We booked early at 7pm on Saturday. It wasn't very busy with not many tables occupied. It was our first visit to The Hungry Horse and we were impressed by the menu options and the reasonable prices. Service was good. However, two of the three meals were ok but the fish and chips was poor. The fish was overcooked and dry. I really should have sent it back. We were then told the bar was shutting at 8pm and we were asked to get any further drink orders in. The reason was apparently trade and staff issues because of the A417 road closures. I had some sympathy for this because managing the pub in this location must be difficult during the A417 construction. However, that was no excuse for the poorly cooked food which we commented on. The website hasn't been updated with changes to opening hours.

Very poor and seems even worse since refurbishment. Staff limited and not paying attention to table service. Having to ask multiple times for the same thing. And when we left and went up to pay for additional drinks we were not served at the counter, which we could have been and directed to wait more time at “wait to be served” point. And then the cherry on top was extremely attitude of the lady that served us to pay. Who had no interest in apologising for service and just told us how bad her day was. A real shame…!
