As an older women who comes to cafes often, this cafe is okay in touches. I come here about 3 times over the past 2 months. Once with my granddaughter and the other two with one of my friends. Both said it wasn’t the best. First time was okay, would not recommend their Full English. I don’t know but the texture of everything was odd, sausage seemed cheap and their egg was cooked lazy. But the next two times I tried their ham, egg and chips meal. That was much butter, plate filled but the chips come pale and undercooked. Had to ask for it to be replaced or cooked more, no issue though seemed as if they had an off day. The times I’ve gone there is always poor management. There once was a man who works there, young, who acts out and makes the visit quite unpleasant. There was arguing so me and my granddaughter left. The next time, I believe the bosses, older man and women seemed very lazy. Always outside and only came in if there was a new costumer. I get it’s good to have a break but the other works (the young man from earlier and maybe 16 year old girl) had to do loads. I was there for about 3 hours during lunch period and I didn’t see them take an understandable break. Maybe 10-15 minutes or so to eat lunch. I’m not to make judgements but I think the younger two must’ve been working all day. On the other hand, they are all polite to costumers it’s just not a very positive atmosphere to be around, I think the two bosses should be kinder. But again, I’ve only been there 3 times. Meals good, cheap. Wish they did an actual cappuccino and stop lying, when it’s just a milky coffee.

Sunday lunch. Sadly they’d run out of Pork, one of the trio of meats and the only one that I would have chosen if the others were unavailable. So we had the beef which was lovely. The roasties could have done with another twenty minutes to crisp up a bit but they were lovely and fluffy inside, well cooked. The veg was lovely but oh dear, the gravy had a very sticky consistency and the Yorkshire puddings were almost inedible due to being almost impossible to cut, rubbery is the best I can describe them as. We had a late lunch but still a couple of hours before the end of service so no real excuse for running out of Pork and rubbery Yorkshires. The pub was lovely and clean, including the WCs, the staff were lovely and very helpful. Beer was reasonably priced and well kept, sadly the cost of wine was almost as much for a glass as the cost of dinner. One of the better Sunday lunches in and around Newbury and reasonable value. We will go again and hope that next time it warrants 5 stars!
