Went for a birthday celebration. Our usual dining preference is a definite cuisine with homestyle cooking and no pretension. Once a year or so we do a fine dining option. She is vegetarian, I am less fussy.
I am a good home cook, she works in the restaurant trade and we are sympathetic to current difficulties.
We didn’t need to be so here; OK so I usually blench at the sight of a man tweezering food and waitstaff that serves the first course with “Let’s start our journey”,; it often signals a night of pretension and not much else, but this was excellent cooking and service to back it up.
There is a £65 four course menu and a £85 tasting menu incl a veg option. We had the 4 course.
Yes the portions are small, its not quite the ‘bag of chips on the way home’ scenario but its not gluttony either and ‘langoustine’ is exactly what it says. One langoustine, £15 additional option, doubtless because of the dab of caviar on the top of it, but it was the most perfectly cooked specimen I have ever had. They don’t travel well and often past their best before they arrive at a kitchen.
The brioche melted in the mouth, the risotto was al dente but not raw and the parmesan crisp on top of it had obviously taken a lot of work, a sea bream ceviche was seriously fresh and beautifully balanced. The monkfish delicate and moreish. The wine list is expensive but that’s how it is these days – deal with it.
The (presumably) head chef with the tweezers had obviously put in a lot of hard work in prep before he picked them up. Watching the kitchen staff in the open kitchen you saw zero macho heroics and a lot of surefooted care.
The room wasn’t full all night and so I cannot vouch for the noise level past that, but mercifully no-one had turned up a ‘curated’ playlist.
Service was attentive without being obsequious; you don’t usually get a recommendation for a Ukrainian ‘shots bar’ at the post dinner chat – we will check it out on a less refined evening.
Really enjoyed it, you would be hard pressed to find better at this style of cooking and certainly not at this price level. Definitely worth a visit. Damn fine stuff.
Excellent breakfast in The Common Room, really enjoyed it hugely. Beautifully cooked and presented, it was quite delicious. Very, very good value for money and I will ve back.
My then girlfriend and I first ate at Chada when we were students in 1986. We didn't have much money, so we would share a starter and sometimes a main, and restrict ourselves to one beer each. Even so, the owners were unfailingly kind and welcoming, and the food was always fantastic. Fast forward to 2002 and as a now married couple, we revisited Chada to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday. It had been a few years, but the restaurant was as good as ever. Shortly after we moved to Wales, but in November 2022 we visited once again to celebrate my sister in law's 70th. Every dish was absolutely delicious and the owners were so gracious. With our grown up son now living in London, we hope to resume visiting Chada on a regular basis.
Southwest Eleven WOW we’ve used this amazing venue twice in the space of nearly 3 months (22 December 22) for my surprise 60th birthday and (15 March 23) for my big sister’s celebration of life funeral reception. This venue was perfect for both events it created such an amazing intimate ambience from the interior with a bar which had interchangeable luminous different coloured lights, a stage area for live music DJ set up or even performances (we had a gospel singer performing at my birthday party) and the sound quality from the venue speakers were superb. There’s also some space to dance on stage or on the floor area if you want to boogie suffice to say our guests utilised these spaces really well practically non-stop dancing all night to the excellent music being played. There are 3 big booths with tables that you can put together or separate to walk in between the gap to get to your seat without disturbing others. Come to think of it it was spacious enough for dancing as l saw many a guests standing up and dancing in the booths. There’s also a back dinning space which is on a platform adding another dimension to the premises we organised this space to maximise the seatings and to comfortably fit in the caterers by pushing the covered pool table against the back wall which we used to store the desserts/salad bowls, plates and utensils. The exterior secret beer garden with fake grassed semi sheltered tables/benches seating smoking area with disabled access has huge glass windows so we could view what’s happening from either outside looking in or inside looking out keeping us closely connected throughout the night. This makes the venue stands out amongst others as this fabulous cosy area meant that none of our guests were loitering outside the very front of the building causing any disturbances to the community making our function truly special and private. On both these dates we were extremely amazed by Dmitri’s warm friendliness, professionalism, he was very accommodating because he allowed us to decorate the venue from the night before in order to help take the stresses out of the funeral day. In fact we found all staff from the Security Guard at the door to the barman were all excellent. My family and l highly recommend Southwest Eleven for all your special occasions if you’re wanting something unique and classy? Well what are waiting for contact Dmitri and book your events today we did twice and we will absolutely 100% book with Southwest Eleven again.
There are many good places to eat in Tooting but it's just off the radar.
Finally made a trip because of Harringtons pie mash which became a priority over Vermicelli.
I'm so glad I tried it and it was certainly memorable especially the menu as liquor is spelt LICKER.
The jellied eels were delicious and they were able to give me extra jelly on a half portion.
The liquor was also comforting as you could taste eel in it as well.
I was always sceptical of this place after walking past multiple times but it hasn’t met up to expectations - it’s decorated like a 8 year olds bedroom - purple walls and butterflies.
Food was okay but not many gluten free options (which I assumed there would be more after reading reviews) aside from gluten free bread. Tasted good though - meal choice ~Ape pictured
Everyone here seems to order oat lattes so if that’s not your scene- avoid.
The employees working there were lovely people however the managers were rude and dismissive. The coffee was watery and the food was cold and bland. Overall, not a good experience and i would not go again.
