After reading about this bakery in the local paper I made a special trip to see what the bread is like. WOW! The best Portuguese Custard Tart I have ever eaten! There were amazing little quiches as well….to say nothing of the Rosemary Focaccia! What a find.. Worth the trip.

Good looking pub located in close proximity to Ickworth. We went for Sunday lunch. Service was ok though many staff seemed inexperienced or not much incentive to care (slow, seen on mobile rather than checking on you). Roast wasn’t the best, veggie basket (the only veg option) was ok but very small. Stuffing or cabbage not to our taste, broccoli raw. Dessert was slightly better but also disappointing - for a nice looking pub we expected more on food quality, but was let down and won’t return.

We cut our planned two nights visit short to a single one because Ickworth, despite its beautiful setting and stunning architecture, was such a disappointment. We found that it did not live up to the standard that it advertises to be. Pealing paint, mouldy bathrooms, worn and soiled carpets and a musty, damp smell summed up the buildings and the room we stayed at. The restaurant food is a throwback to Britain in the 70s; overcooked, lukewarm and bland. Aside from the astonishingly poor food, dinner was not cheap at £199 for a family of four with no extravagant dishes or wine ordered. Staff was friendly though enough.

The hotel and the grounds are lovely. The restaurant however is abysmal. we ordered two scones and a cheese and pickle sandwich. This took over 35 minutes and when the sandwich arrived it looked like it had been made by monkeys. Imagine 99% pickle oozing out the side of two slices of thin cheap bread. Couldn't see any cheese whatsoever. I honestly don't think this was prepared by a chef. The staff were clearly flustered, we could hear other tables complaining and I suspect someone just cobbled it together. Embarrassing.

Booked lunch after seeing their widely advertised ‘Stone’s Throw Kitchen Menu’ promotion: 2 or 3 courses, locally sourced menu, complimentary glass of wine. But on arrival there was only a limited lunch menu of expensive snacks available. Staff said the kitchen had not been told of our booking for the promotion, staff didn’t seem aware of it, but it’s all on the hotel website and being advertised locally and on social media. I had a miniscule slice of tart for £10 very poor value. Disappointing.
