My wife and I opted to have a meal at The Orangery having seen that they were offering a Valentine’s Dinner. We were also married at the adjoining hotel (over 20 years ago) and so we felt there was a romantic connection to the evening. The table had some red petals and a tall white candle. The room was lit beautifully and the temperature was comfortable. It seemed like a good choice on arrival But then the “restaurant machine” was switched on and any first impressions we had were soon evaporated. Our order, including drinks, was taken and within 5 minutes the starter and wine had arrived. Our empty plates were whisked away and the sorbet mouth cleansers were popped in front of us. They were removed with the upmost efficiency and we were on to the main course. And so on.. in fact, we were seated and proficiently guided through 4 courses in around 1 hour and 10 mins. Our main courses were cooked very well, though they lacked imagination. In contrast, the starters and desserts were prepared well in advance and we felt they had been bought in. Overall, we felt that The Orangery had stage-managed a Valentine’s Dinner. The speed at which we were whisked through sapped any sense of romanticism and the food was better than average. We may return to sample what the chef could offer on a non-themed evening, but we will consider all our other options first.

The website suggests that breakfast is served till noon so when we pulled up at 11.15am and noticed they were still closed was confusing, but we waited regardless till they opened at 11.30am as we were starving. It's been a while since I've visited King and Miller myself, and I used to rate the place quite highly. However, despite the refurb it had years ago - it seems to be doing with another one sometime in the near future. The place hadn't been cleaned from the previous night it would appear with under the tables not being cleaned, coins still on the sides and the tables near the arcade machine. The tables were sticky too and despite one of the reviews on here stating that the table salt and pepper pots were blocked, wet and messy and they got a response stating that sachets would be used as a replacement so that this wouldn't happen again - as you can see this hasn't been implemented. £18 for a bog-standard breakfast, where Heinz beans were apparently used as advertised but unfortunately this wasn't the case and you can tell they're not branded. The bacon was obviously done on an unclean grill, however, the egg was free-range and the hash brown bites were a good shout. The orange juice I had tasted like the carton had been left out in the warmth and then refrigerated also - my partner agreed with me and neither could finish it. The money spent should go to the staff who seemed friendly and helpful enough, but the food just wasn't up the standard, nor was the decor and cleanliness. I don't think we shall be returning unless there was some form of deep clean/refurb.

10.30am - quiet time, 3 tables and 5 customers including myself. At least 4 staff. An elderly couple had ordered drinks, when they were prepared the member of staff at the service station called the table number, no response and called a second time even though they had spotted the table! The elderly gentleman put his hand up and the staff member said 'your drinks are ready' another customer offered to take the drinks as I was on my way to do the same. I asked why they hadn't taken the drinks to the table as the customer would clearly have struggled, I was told there wasn't a procedure for it 🤔 I pointed out that the procedure should be use your common sense, there wasn't any orders being processed and there weren't busy, almost equal staff to customers, what has happened to customer service 🤨 being trained to think on your feet, read the situation and the customer who's paying your wages comes first.
