Excellent Chippy, always good service and banter whilst waiting for your order.

Chips and curry, it's a joke. You get a teaspoon of curry. Won't be going back there. Also staff are miserable.

Last week we tried fish and chips from Hallcroft after spending ages trying to find a good local chippie. We have finally found the best! And we loved it so much, today we tried the kebabs and they were also excellent! Great food, great value, great service from lovely people. We will be back!

Visiting some relatives from down south. The quality of the fish was exceptional. Also had a chicken kebab wrap which was delicious. The owners and staff were very friendly and polite.

I was shocked on Friday evening when i visited for large cod and chips and there was about 4 other customers in at the same time as well as 2 younge girls with a few kids one of which was wearing the uniform of the shop when the girl behind the counter started hurling abuse at her while serving, she did get hushed into the back by a male member of staff but continued shouting and banging from inside the back of the building Then she returned to the front of the shop to continue her abuse on the ladies that was waiting in the que with there children for food So one of the ladies told her to shut up and come outside if she had a problem to add to the shock the same male member of staff who had previously hushed her into the back then screamed and shouted and continued to bang on the counter to the girls waiting with the children like it was there fault I am truly disgusted that any male could talk or act to anybody in that way let alone to females with children but then for the lady member of staff to be able to continue to work and serve after everybody in the shop had listened to her potty mouth is beyond me I will not be returning and hope the 2 ladies and there younge children are ok

Good food, good portions, good price. All prepared and served in a clean environment by friendly staff. Came again on a day trip and it's still as great as usual.

Ordered a large cod with large chips. Had to wait while the fish is cooked fresh. Worth the wait, it's a long time dance I had cod as h good as that. The people are friendly and talk to you.

As always our food, ( family of 5!) was absolutely bloody scrummy. Never ever once have I had a bad meal from Hallcroft fish bar, not once. And if I was to ever experience it I wouldn’t be writing about it the one time you went in 🙄 Keep doing what you are doing, Boss Man and your amazing staff. Happy new year.

If I could rate customer service zero stars I would. Went in tonight and was surprised there was no queue. Despite this unfortunately we didn’t get served straight away as the two staff behind the counter were too busy chatting. When we eventually got served, the lady was very rude and continued to chat to her colleague despite not fully taking our order. Our first meal that we ordered was sat wrapped up going cold whilst they were deep in conversation so we made the decision to leave and go elsewhere. Very disappointing.

Went there for two mixed kebabs had to wait 10 minutes and got charged £18 for the pleasure tasted okay to be fair, but one hour later I am passing oxtail soup from my bum ring something not right I’m just hoping for a bit of lettuce to block me up

I reviewed this business in 2015, not long after moving to Retford. At that time I gave it a score of 5 and praised it for it's offering to the individual customer. Since then, as a member of the bowls club just down the road, I have used them to cater for fish and chip suppers for 40+ people. Others have continued to do this culminating in another supper last week. As ever the meals arrived on time, warm and fresh just as if we had been to the shop as a couple and bought over the counter. In summary, the service and product are impeccable, whether you are buying one meal or dozens. They gave never failed to impress. Well done!

The lack of warmth and genuine care for customer satisfaction only compounded the disappointment caused by the declining food quality. While I understand that establishments may face rising costs and the need to adjust prices accordingly, it is disheartening to see these changes impact the overall dining experience in a negative way. It is crucial for businesses to strike a balance between maintaining affordability and delivering a consistently high-quality product to keep their customers satisfied and loyal. In conclusion, my recent encounter with Hallcroft Fishbar left me disheartened and disappointed due to the combination of declining food quality and rising prices. The lackluster offerings, coupled with the disinterested customer service, made it clear that the overall experience was not what it once was. As a result, I find it difficult to recommend Hallcroft Fishbar as a preferred option for fish and chips, as there are likely better alternatives available that offer both superior taste and better value for money.

The food is great, service is great, but my issue is that on almost every visit, you have to order, then wait. I understand that in todays economic climate it is difficult, but it's a fish bar, but you have to wait for the fish to be battered and fried, why can't some be ready.

Fish and chips are usually okay and seem decent quality, but had a chicken kebab from there recently and it was absolutely shocking. The salad was a few chopped tomatoes with a bit of cucumber and some lettuce....very very average. The chicken, what there was of it, again very average. But the sauces were shocking and sickly and left a bad taste in my mouth. Needless to say the lot ended up in the bin. Won't every be ordering that again!

Good takeaway chippy got all the standard food of a chippy plus extras that are good too. Food is good and one I would definitely recommend to go to.

We ordered cod chips & muchy peas x 2. One cod lightly battered, this was that dry it ended up in the bin, the muchy peas were disgusting, all you could taste was viniger. Afraid to say its gone down the tubes, wont be going again

The best Chip shop in Retford. Food taste lovely and always hot. Yes you may have to wait now and again, but that's because it is so popular that a lot of people go there and order ahead. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. If there was 10 stars I would give them a full 10. Prices are really good and you get good amount for what you pay. I always go there after work at least twice a week

Disgusting fish and chips tonight, Both had fish and chips and peas and I've being sick and fetched it back up. My partner is feeling sick to and only eaten this meal. Certainly won't be back. Not first time this happened.

Love food wish they did smaller chip portions to many for one person don't like wasting good chip shops should do 3 different size portions to there for a family not a person who lives on there own

Best chippy for miles around. Well an up date on my favourite chippy after yesterday's tea the Donna kebab was swimming in oily fat and the chips were soggy and greasy it made me feel sick from for though i tryed to eat it but so glad i left it sorry but this chippy as seriously gone down hill rippedly time to find a better chippy.

Only reason I went was because they are slightly quicker than West Carr Chippy in Ordsall. Foods alright but have been two weeks on the trot asked for salt an vinegar but they never put it on (can't get the staff ;) )

Last week we ordered chicken portion for my wife. Day after she had diarrhoea. Last night we went back and she had chicken. Today diarrhoea. Fish is great, don't eat the chicken.

Visiting Retford for the day on 30 December and found nothing open around the market square. Turned to Tripadvisor and found this listed and a shot walk from where I was visiting. Fish cooked fresh for me, generous portion of chips and good sized mushy peas. Worth the walk.

Spam fritters are great meal deal good value and just the right size for dinner time

Travelled 7 miles to buy F&C for supper. Whale-size haddock, super-crisp batter and proper, tasty chips! Hygiene rated 5* - spotlessly clean premises. Open long hours and obviously very popular. Will buy from them again. Good prices and definitely value-for-money!

Asked for 2 large fish n chips with curry sauce and they didn't even get that order right. Terrible service staff would rather talk to each other about there lives than paying attention to their customers. This has happened twice now

Warm and friendly staff. We had chips, cod bites ( to die for) peas and curry sauce. We live about 5 miles away and they didn't travel well. If we had sat and ate them in the car they would of been excellent I'm sure. The Hallcroft fishbar is........CASH ONLY!!, which did trip me up, as had to leave to find cash point after I gave my order and the member of staff who had already wrapped up my order. ( Nearest is Morrisons). I Would go again and eat in car. Therefore I give Hallcroft fishbar 3 *

Queued for twenty five minutes while looking at 12 cod bites to then be rudely told I would have to wait while more were cooked but only wanted six. Not sure why they needed to cook more don't bother going we're not any more

Hallcroft Fish Bar has Gone from being the best chippy I’ve ever been to, serving fresh food, to being the worst, serving inedible slop, in a matter of months! So disappointed.

Visited on a week night after it had been recommended considering it was a Wednesday evening it was busy, fish was freshly cooked, the portions were large and an added extra wax they served potatoes fritters which you can't get everywhere. The premises were very clean and the staff friendly and polite. Only complaint was there appeared to be a new member of staff who served us and we weren't asked if we'd like salt and vinegar- consequently our dinner was bear of salt and vinegar
