My partner and I just wanted coffee and cake as a treat, but my partner wanted really good cake, and he wanted to sit outside, so Zugers was the first place to spring to mind. We chose to sit out in the courtyard space at the back, and that is such a lovely place, as it is so peaceful and tranquil, especially as Chester was extremely busy at the time with race-goers moving from the pubs down to the course; we literally couldn’t hear any of it. The staff are warm, friendly, and professional, with a good range of knowledge about the products. There was a fantastic array of cakes, covering just about every taste, and it was difficult to choose. Presentation was excellent, the portion sizes were generous, and everything tasted amazing. It was perfect, and we’re looking forward to going back again as soon as we can. Happy to recommend.

Just slightly out of the way but not without the normal amount of hope when discovering places in chester, there is zugers on st johns street. They have the perfect little quiet spot, as an outdoor back area to the rear of the restaurant which definiately needs a mention as it resembles some sort of secret garden, tranquil and relaxing. Amazing attentive staff, super friendly and the right amount of attention and service given. Food was sublime, one of us had a toastie and the other 'big one' breakfast. Fresh ingredients, quality produce. Attention to detail was noticeable aswell, hot plates always a winner! Thank you zugers, we will definately be back!

We popped in for a coffee and light lunch. Staff very welcoming and friendly. We chose to sit in the beautiful courtyard which was a bonus find and very relaxing. Coffee was excellent and soya milk available. Had a plate of sandwiches with salad and crisps and all very tasty. Glad we found this place and we will be back!

Spent the day in Chester when staying in nearby Wirral and came across this cafe/restaurant when looking for a lunch stop. General Swiss theme so I opted for the smoked salmon rosti which was delicious. Mrs M chose the quiche and salad - also very tasty although I suspect she may be going for the rosti next time after tasting mine 😀. A licensed premises with a good choice of refreshing beers and wines. Overall a good experience and we will probably be back when next in the area.

Had lunch today at Zugers. My husband had the Alpine rosti which he really enjoyed. I however had the open danish sandwich with smoked salmon and cream cheese and salad and melon. This consisted of 2 small circles of bread with the cheese and salmon toppings. The salad consisted of a small amount of iceberg lettuce, 1 salad leaf, 1 cherry tomato cut in half, 1.5 slices of cucumber, a minute amount of red onion, bit of coleslaw and grated carrot and the smallest bit of melon all for the sum of £10.95. A member of waiting staff asked if my meal was ok I replied that I expected more salad for the price. I was told I could order a side salad. When paying I also said I was not happy with my meal. The member of staff apologised but didn’t bother asking why. A very disappointing experience.

My friend and I decided to go on a day out in Chester and they picked Zugers, it looked really nice and felt welcoming, the staff were nice and friendly, we ordered some food and it came out in a decent amount of time, I had a cheese and Ham toastie, it looked really nice but when eating it the cheese melted inside wasn’t properly done, it tasted a bit burnt and it looked like scrambled egg, it wasn’t the best one I’ve had and I thought changing the cheese to say mozzarella cheese may work better, I did think the price for it was a little high but it was a nice place to eat out and I would recommend it

Decided to treat ourselves to a breakfast out. It was very pleasant sitting in the plant-filled courtyard outside the back of the restaurant. Zugers offers a good range of fairly priced breakfasts and we had a standard breakfast plus the vegetarian version. Both were cooked extremely well, presented nicely and were extremely tasty. The staff were courteous and efficient and the whole experience was highly enjoyable.

My wife and I love Zugers, it is one of our regular lunch venues in Chester. On this occasion I had such a tasty lunch, that I had to pen a glowing review for them! My wife much enjoyed her Big Breakfast Toastie, and I had a Chicken Schnitzel baguette with Curry Mayo which was exceptional. As always, the coffee was lovely, the service friendly and professional, and the ambience sophisticated and relaxed. The food is always very good. We will, of course, return (again and again!).

We went here as it was round the corner from the hotel we were staying in and we were so hungry. What a great little find! It was really quiet when we went, but it was not long after they opened. You can see through the day that this place gets busier. I had a mocha and French toast. My partner had a cooked breakfast, tea and orange juice. Food was really quick and was beautifully presented. Both really enjoyed it. Reasonably priced too, good quality food and freshly made. Staff really lovely and friendly too.

This was a terrible disappointment yesterday from this long standing establishment that used to have higher standards of courteous service and quality of cooking. We opted to sit in the 'garden' at the back outside - all fine until a lunchtime noisy game of handball from neighbouring office workers adjacent to the screened area ruined our digestion as we fled indoors... After 15 minutes of being given menus and as we were on a tight schedule I went indoors to order at the till as our waitress was chatting outside to be chastised by the manager for placing our order with her rather that at table. We ordered 2 house specialities- Alpine Rosti and 2 lattes. Lattes came in those dreadful tall sundae glasses, topped with foam & were devoid of coffee, tasting of warm skimmed milk so I asked for another shot of coffee to taste some. This was one of the worst coffees (if you can describe it thus) that I've ever had. The extra shot helped but I was charged an extra 40p for it. After a further 20 min wait after we had almost finished the now cold milky coffee I had to ask one of the 4 waitresses (in a quiet cafe) to check that the rosti hadn't been forgotten. Shortly they arrived (25 mins after ordering) to be told they took time as they were 'cooked to order'. This was hard to imagine as the grated potato and onion forming the basis of the Swiss named dish (& house speciality) was bland tasting & far from crisp and cooked as it ought, quickly resembling mashed potato rather than the crisp fried creation it ought to have been. Topped with 2 grilled rashers of fatty bacon and a fried egg, I couldn't detect the gruyere cheese the description on the menu claimed to have. I would have complained that it was below what used to be cooked to perfection in Zugers Wirral branch of old, but treating a friend prevented me from embarrassing him and complaining. Instead, i most reluctantly paid the bill (an extortionate £12.95 each for a gimmicky skillet of MASHED potato, 2 rashers of bacon and a fried egg!!) and the WORST weak coffee in Chester ( & I've ever had). Please think twice about eating the Rosti here. The cakes and pastries on show (previously excellent and tempting) looked dull and tired, so we avoided them. It's possible the previous excellent management sold out to new owners - hence the shock fall in manners from the staff and quality of cooking in the kitchen, but we hadn't been here since pre-lockdown - and we won't be returning... There are better cafe coffee/tea shops in Chester. This falls short of being one of them - at a price.

Very bemusing especially in such times ... you wouldn’t have a business if it wasn’t for customers so I’d have thought it would be more appropriate to be nice at least. We booked ahead to order afternoon tea for Sunday afternoon. Staff were friendly and patient when half our group were delayed by traffic problems following a crash on the motorway. There was gluten free bread and scones and cake for our birthday girl. Everyone chose their favourite sandwich fillings and the staff were happy to customise the fillings to suit, so everyone had sandwiches they loved rather than the often disappointing roulette of assorted sandwich fillings that often accompanies afternoon tea. Scones were warm and served with individual portions of cream and individual pots of jam. We chose our own cake from the selection available - i had the lovely black forest gateaux - moist chocolate sponge cream, cherries , kirsch, and grated chocolate. Will definitely visit next time we're in Chester.

It is not the cheapest of Cafe's in Chester, but then you get what you pay for and personally I think the food is worth the money.

A group of us came here for breakfast on a weekend away and it was so good we came back the same day. We had a range of things from the menu - full breakfast, vegetarian, and scrambled eggs. The quality of the ingredients was fantastic - sausages, bacon and tomatoes etc. The scrambled eggs were gorgeous and the portion sizes were good. The service was so friendly too - nothing was too much trouble. If I come back to Chester I’ll definitely make a bee line for this place. PS. Although we didn’t have any the cakes on display looked fantastic!

We dropped in late afternoon, mainly for children’s food. Their food was very good, and the staff were welcoming, and great with the children. It’s an ideal atmosphere for a relaxed, family friendly meal.

Lovely place and all the staff were lovely. We were seated by a very helpful young man who was warm and friendly. I had the soup and so pleased that I’d ordered it as it was delicious hot and full of flavour. Happily go back and have it again. My husband had two milkshakes ( yes they were that good! ) . Wouldn’t hesitate to cone back next time we are in Chester.

Went to Zugers for a late lunch, our party had the Rosti, Welsh Rarebit and Chicken Schnitzel. They were all very tasty and plentiful portions. We went after the lunch rush and service was a little slow but excellent.

Very nice place, lovely staff but I was disappointed when I ordered a bacon toasty off the menu on the table at about 12.30 pm thinking it was £4.50 but not realising it went to £5.95 from 11.30...very expensive for a small bacon toasty.

Well we’re not disappointed, very nicely appointed, staff were amazing.....nothing was too much trouble and one of the best breakfasts I have had, the scrambled eggs were light and fluffy, all in all a great place to go, gets busy very quickly with people queuing for a table......no surprise, we will be definitely going back there.

Went for breakfast and were very pleased with both the food and the service. You can get cheaper food elsewhere but the combination of quality, service and environment mean this is a lovely place to spend 30 minutes.

RUDE management, expensive food, cramped, used to be very loyal to this place but after rude and unprofessional treatment by member of management, we have taken our custom elsewhere and so have lots of our friends.

Zugers is the café where all the locals go. Very nicely laid out also with tables in a small courtyard. Had a great lunch meal. Good service and reasonable prices (delicious fish cakes).

After a dreadful breakfast experience at the hotel next door, we decamped to Zuger's the next day. Hot cups and plates, a delicious breakfast and a brightness that set us up for the day. The staff were great. Not surprised that they've won awards.

Having spent the day in Chester and feeling hungry after the river cruise and not being able to get a table at another eatery we were enticed by the courtyard, beautiful late Summers day calls for food and fresh air. As soon as we entered Zugers we were met with a smile and a warm welcome, the courtyard didn't disappoint it's a lovely oasis. The menu has something for everyone and prices are good, we chose homemade fish cakes and ham and eggs, both were absolutely delicious as was the Vino Tinto! Portion size was spot on to, quite rare these days. Service was swift and very friendly, such a refreshing change to most places to eat these days. I must say thankyou to the other place (who weren't really bothered enough to accommodate us) because we would have missed Zugers Highly recommended, sit, relax, enjoy, great job Zugars!

Another lovely lunch, we got exactly what we wanted, including an extra bowl of hot chips for our granddaughters, this is a special place. A quiet oasis in a very busy city. Always good service with the extra attention to detail. Thank you zugers

We went here today for a late lunch. On ordering I specifically asked for the salads to have no peppers as I am intolerant to them. The waitress went off and then returned to ask if I was allergic or “just didn’t like” peppers. I explained I am intolerant peppers make me ill. The waitress went off to note this down. Our meal came and the couscous salad hiding under my fishcakes was full of peppers. Luckily none of the peppers had touched my food as there were no staff outside to inform. On paying I complained only to be told the waitress had “been distracted” when writing down my intolerance. We were given a vague apology but you would think more care would be taken.

Attended Saturday night quiz. Arrived at 7:00pm. Started with a glass of red wine and Mediterranean platter followed by a to die for cheesecake( all food freshly cooked by Jason ( chef ) and the team. Wolfed the cheese cake down and realised I hadn't took a picture. Had a few more vino's during the quiz along with some banter with Jason and the regular customers. All tables were booked and nice to see a full house. Made a change to the average Saturday night and will certainly do it again. Would recommend to call in prior for some brekky or lunch to book quiz any day before or on Saturday. Quiz moved on quicker than your normal pub quiz which was great with the light banter and no typical interruptions from pub scene. Didn't win the quiz but enjoyed trying.

Stumbled on this wonderful cafe as we were on our way home from a camping trip. The staff are incredibly friendly and were so welcoming and kind to my 5yo daughter. The food was amazing, we both had the breakfast and my daughter had a lunch box which she loved and I thought it was great value, when we went inside to pay we couldn't not buy one (or two) of the amazing cakes. So delicious. Thank you :)

Our favourite place to come for brunch after football. The team, as always, went above and beyond with the orders for our family (all with different dietary requirements). The boys had the classic big breakfast with local products at a great price. I tried the weekend special eggs Benedict and it was amazing. The boys filled their boots. The girls enjoyed new things. The doorstop toast alone is worth the visit. Sadly, no room for my favourite one the menu - parsnip cake, but the cake-away option meant I could enjoy it later. We brought a friend for their first visit and she was blown away.

Not religious at all but like other reviewers found this true OASIS when looking for refreshment in Chester Just great, lovely staff and clientele and great quality and value coffee and cakes... Interesting selection of books, gifts, cards etc Would use regularly if we lived locally Staff say they may have to relocate soon due to "commercial development of the site" Surely the Church which is not short of funds can provide an alternative venue for this wonderful place which probably does more for spreading the religious message than many more traditional churches etc...something in the Cathedral Precinct maybe?? Good luck to you all and God bless ( if it helps)
