This hotel has been going for years and the room for the price was excellent. Yes the furniture could do with updating but i like that quirky, kitch vibe... in fact i think they should bend into that! but I'm not spending my time in the hotel room to notice it tbh! I'm too busy having a holiday! So for what I do need in a hotel room is exactly what these guys offer. A comfy bed, blackout curtains, decent central heating, tea and coffee and a gorgeous roll top bath with really hot water! Perfect! Don't need anything more for £50 in the middle of Liverpool! Excellent staff, excellent building, great location and dog friendly rooms too! Jasper loved it!

This is a review of the hotel. Lovely quirky old building, our room was comfortable and clean with a great roll top bath, but some of the furniture was a bit tatty. The staff were lovely, and I'd pick this over a chain every time if the price was right, but the room definitely needed a bit of TLC.

Came here with high expectations of a lovely dinner following raves from friends, Liverpool ECHO and TripAdvisor reviews/ratings. Booking was easy over the phone. There is so much history here with the building and previously a private gentlemen's club. When we got there we were the only ones for dinner on this particular Saturday night. There was a private party of 20 in the private dining room. Laura was our hostess and she was friendly; a warm welcome on a winter night. We had the seasonal vegetable soup and minifish and chips as starters. And then the rump of beef as mains. Shared the dessert Bakewell tart with ice cream. My only criticism for the night was that the house rose wine, diet coke and specifically the tonic water (Schweppes) in the first vodka and tonic water were flat! Otherwise the night was enjoyable as we were the only customers and had all the attention.

We were warmly welcomed and served a glass of bubbly on arrival as I had said it was our anniversary when i booked this. This was our first visit, you could walk straight past it as its set within a block of classic buildings. Its mostly used for weddings but is open when none are taking place. The choice of artwork is somewhat odd, as it didn't always blend with the natural architecture of the building. The waitress/barmaid was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the building etc. It was however very quiet, only 3 other couples were there in a very large bar and restaurant area which sadly didn't help the atmosphere as it was too quiet. I had terrine of hock to start and hubby had soup, which were both lovely but the bread served with it was very hard which we gave feedback at the time. For mains I had pork chop with potato and hubby had the chicken, again both were lovely and good sized portions. Prices were very reasonable around £15:00 for each main. Cheese for afters was £7.95 with a good selection. Wine menu was varied and again very reasonable, we paid £23 for a lovely bottle of white This is a perfect place for quiet drink when the bustle of Liverpool gets too much. Its a great little secret really so I'm only going to share it with my trip advisor friends…..

I'll start by saying that this meal was purchased through Living Social so it may have impacted on the menu. That said, it should NOT have impacted on the cooking! The restaurant is not particularly welcoming - we had to wait nearly 5 minutes before anyone appeared to take us to our table. Not a great start. We were then given a menu and the complimentary glass of wine that we'd purchased as part of the deal - I say glass, but thimble full would be more apt - for an establishment clearly using these deals to increase their footfall and their reputation, this doesn't exaclty endear them to guests!Meals duly ordered, they appeared at our table in record time. I think it was 2 mins after ordering that the starters appeared. I chose the belly pork and my wife chose red mullet. For some reason I needed to move my plate and alarm bells started to ring when I found the plate was stone cold but was extremely shocked when taking my first mouthful of pork to find that not only was the plate stone cold but so was the pork!I called the waitress over to complain - and was asked "which bit is cold" - I showed her the piece I'd spat out and asked if she wanted to feel it...she mumbled an apology then took the plate away. My wife meanwhile was enjoying her mullet and she'd almost finished hers when my starter re-appeared - this time the plate was scorching hot, and so was the pork. The same pork I'd sent back and which was now crispy belly pork - including the piece that I'd spat out!!!Clearly they didn't believe it was necessary to give me a fresh portion...We moved onto the main course - I went for the pan fried chicken breast in a mustard cream sauce, my wife chose the lamb which came with a horseradish gravy. My wife asked very nicely if there was any way she could have a plain gravy but this was clearly too much for the person cooking the food (or reheating the food in my case) so she had her main without gravy. The waitress also failed to serve any bread with the starter - a bit of an elementary error! The lamb was fine - I had a taste of my wife's. The chicken was, to be frank, disgusting. The meat was moist, but the moisture consisted mainly of water - the chicken had clearly been frozen and then cooked when just defrosted and it had retained a lot of the water. There was absolutely no taste to the chicken breast - just the taste of water. If there was any mustard in the sauce then it was the mildest mustard known to man as again, there was no flavour. It was interesting to note that the chef (?) spent most of the time hanging out with his mates in the kitchen and wandering around the bar rather than actually cooking. We were offered a free desert by our waitress to make up for the meal, but based on the experience of the first two courses, we decided to give it a miss. This meal rates amongst the worst meal I've had anywhere. We were in the restaurant less than an hour and we were made to feel that by being there we were an inconvenience. I'm amazed by the other reviews as clearly we visited a very different restaurant - or was it because we were eating on the cheap.Either way I would certainly never return to this place - there are far, far better restaurants in Liverpool. Such a shame as I was really looking forward to the meal based on reviews on here - shows you that you can't always believe what you read.

We went on Saturday 9 August. We were the only other couple when we arrived (6.30pm) but the restaurant soon filled up. Husband didn't enjoy lamb he'd chosen for his main as he said it was too fatty but that was only negative. We were looked after by Helena Martel who is an absolute asset to the Racquet Club. She looked after us on a previous visit and is so good at what she does. I think that the price of drinks is very reasonable. £21 for a good bottle of prosecco isn't far off what we would pay in a local pub and a few quid cheaper than what we've paid in other restaurants. We spent the rest of the evening chilling and chatting in the lovely atmosphere of the bar in this lovely building in Liverpool. Helena, thanks again for taking such good care of us.

Ate here with two friends on a Tuesday evening.Somewhat soleless venue. It's a very big room, with high ceilings, and somewhat characterless. There were two young waitresses who continually disappeared, when not serving food. Normally staff are there to meet and greet, show you to table, offer drinks, wine list etc. We had to ask for the wine list, after the 1st course was delivered! Not even a mention of it when being seated. Midway through the main course, we decided to have another bottle of wine, but could we contact a member of staff, without actually getting up from the table, to join in the hide and seek game, they were obviously playing. When ordering the first bottle (an Aussie Shiraz @ about £18), the waitress returned to say they didn't have any. I suggested an alternative @ £24. She again returned to say, she couldn't find that either. She said there may be some "upstairs" (whatever that may be), but seemed reluctant to pursue this avenue. I eventually just picked one of the house reds (a Sangiovese - which was decent enough). And the second bottle was unceremoniously just put on our table, unopened!!!The food was simple and tasty. But nothing I could not have cooked at home. The pink duck (as described) was decidedly unpink. The chicken quite nice, with a tasty portion of creamed savoy. The pork chop was, well just a pork chop!!Would we go again. Unlikely. Value for money. Good - because I used my HiLife card. I would begrudge paying full whack, for such simple food. And we saved on the tip. Why should we pay for service that was almost non existent?

We ate at Ziba last night and loved eveything from start to finish.Friendly service, a well thought out balanced menu leading to superbly cooked food and great wine. You really have to try this place, needless to say we will be going again.

Recently visited ziba with my husband.i have been before although it was a few years ago, I am happy to say the food is still as good as I remember. Full of character and comfortable surroundings the staff were lovely the two young ladies who served us were great. nothing was too much trouble, this place is on a quieter side of the city near to the river front but its worth a visit if you like fine dining menus then give it a try prices are mid range portions are good the cheese board is fab too.

This famous Liverpool members' club changed hands some years ago and is now privately owned. The Ziba restaurant is bright and welcoming and the staff are charming.I met a friend for lunch here and the food was competently prepared and filling. The prices are fair too.Located close to the Pier Head and convenient for the Business Quarter.

Celebrated my brother-in-laws birthday in the private dining lounge, 10 of us. What a gem of a room. Decorated beautifully with extra touches of a candelabra & soft lighting. Food was good although I wasn't sure about my own, turkey, but that was just a personal thing. I have ate here before & the food is good. One of the benefits of this room is that you have your own personal waitress/waiter. Ours was Elena. (apologies if I have spelt this wrong). She was fantastic, most of the time we didn't realise she was there. Our glasses were always filled up, food was served hot & she took any specific orders for drinks for the bar. We never had to leave the room. The whole family had a wonderful night which was made extra special by this place & the staff. Thanks from us all.

I'd been to this venue for a party before and thought the decor and atmosphere were lovely. very classy but not intimidating so decided to try the restaurant on a Monday evening, Though we were the only table in at around 6.30pm (when the restaurant opens) there was still a nice atmophere and it wasn't awkward as it sometimes is as the setting is intimate. The ham hock starter was delicious and having never tried ham hock before I'm definitely now a fan. I had the Goosnargh chicken breast and can honestly say (and I did, several times) that is was the best chicken I've ever tasted. It was succulent and beatifully complimented with a delicious sauce. My partner had pork which is not usually a meat I'd choose but it was equally as perfectly cooked and tasty. We both had brownie for desert and were silent throughout other than the odd mmm and occasional ahh. Again, this was perfectly cooked with a crispy outer layer and delightfully soft centre. The portion sizes were just generous without being too much. Our waitress was very professional but still warm and friendly. She was attentive and suggested a lovely wine which we both thoroughly enjoyed.I'd definitely recommend eating here, in fact, I already to have to almost all of my friends.

We returned to the restaurant for my mum's 80th birthday and had another fabulous private dining experience. The food was lovely even better than the last event (also 5*) and chef was happy to provide alternative choices which was appreciated. The customer service before and during the event was very good and thanks to the staff who decorated the room. Our waitress worked really hard and the barman (sorry forgotten your name) not only was excellent but very kindly downloaded music onto his phone and loaned it to us for the evening. It is that kindness and support that is evident throughout to ensure our celebration was successful.I would recommend this restaurant for its food service and for hosting an event and it is great value for money.Thank you to all.

Ziba at Racquet Club is situated on Chapel Street, in one of Liverpool's many beautiful old buildings. Italian marble columns outside, marble staircase inside and then into the restaurant itself - excellent food, beautifully presented. Prices a bit on steep side, but we had a discount card, so it made it cheap in fact. The inside of the dining room is brill - high celings etc. The only downside is that the restuarant had no view - it would be packed out every night if it did.

After being intrigued by some the carved reliefs of Spanish explorers like Pizzaro and Cortez and even Anacoana, an Indian queen of Hispaniola, on the façade, we ventured in the Hargreaves Building to have a look at the Racquet Club Hotel. Although we decided not to stay in the hotel, we did stay for a light lunch at the Ziba. While waiting for the kitchen to open, they served us coffee and hot chocolate. Some of the chairs in the pub / café part of the restaurant were very worn and a bit uncomfortable. The restaurant itself, not yet open for lunch, was made up of several elegantly furnished dining rooms. The soup, salad, and vegetarian club sandwich we had for our light lunch were all fine, and we had a nice chat about life abroad while settling the bill with the very friendly Turkish restaurant manager.

We used a great Travelzoo offer for my birthday treat. The restaurant is in a grand old building but no tablecloths made it look a rather austere. The food was really great, very tasty, well presented and hot. Sadly we found the service really poor. We had a table booked for 7.30 but weren't seated for our starters until 8.30. There appeared to be just 2 waitresses and whilst they were friendly they both seemed somewhat lack lustre and we had to ask at least twice each time we wanted order more drinks - just to place the order. From reading other reviews I'm guessing we just picked a bad night for service.Despite this, we all had good evening with great food and wine and would give this place another try.

We both started with different forms of salmon. A good choice. One of us had duck and the other had pork chop - both of us enjoyed it. The cheese was better than the chocolate brownie, which was a bit too sweet for me. I'll know to choose cheese next time.A bit of feedback about the furnishings. It was very noisy - possibly because there was no carpet. Or possibly because it was a Friday night.

The restaurant might not be the most luxuriously appointed but there is a lot of interesting artwork on the walls. Food and wine was great, as was the service.

As other reviewers have already reported, the service received at this restaurant was excellent from front of office to waitressing staff. Our event ran very smoothly and the private area was ideal. We had prebooked our menu and the selection available was very good. WE had a great time and would recommend it.

The staff were excellent, very helpful and friendly ensuring they provided you with an excellent service, and all done with warm smiles. The starter was average but the main course and dessert were very tasty and well presented. The dining area was spacious and comfortable and had character. The walls are painted in pale colours which is fine for modern buildings, but this building has character and this needs to be presented in it's decor. Overall staff excellent, food very good, atmosphere good. Recommended!!!

We got a voucher from travelzoo for a three course meal for two and a glass each of bubbly for £39, very good deal. The food was excellent, I had a chicken liver pate followed by pork and then chocolate brownie with ice cream. The portion sizes were very good and the food was tasty- nothing to complain about, although my boyfriend wasn't a fan of his dessert (passion fruit creme brulee) as it was a bit bitter. The service was helpful and friendly and we had a good night overall. The thing that makes this restaurant only average sadly, is that it looks outdated and a bit cheap and feels as if the people around you are just hotel guests coming downstairs for a quick dinner. Wouldn't pay full price due to the atmosphere not being right however we did have a lovely meal at very good value!

Excellent value for money especially with the latest deal of £39 for 2 people with pleasantly chilled fizz. Opulent surroundings and decor except for brasserie-style chairs (as mentioned by previous reviewers). Better than pub grub but definitely not haute cuisine - ingredients are fresh but chef's style is a touch on the amateur side and not all desserts are homemade. Service is friendly and highly professional, however the somewhat stark atmosphere could be muted by dimming some of those high wattage pseudo-chandeliers! All in all a good experience and sufficiently well priced to warrant a 4 as opposed to a 3 rating and possibly a return visit if in the area. With a few tweaks and a little more culinary innovation, this place could easily improve and potentially attract a foodie-type crowd, as does the nearby Noble House. However, I suspect that the target clientele will, for the foreseeable future, remain the lucrative wedding sector, in which Ziba no doubt shines amidst a sea of city centre mediocrity.

Had breakfast at the Ziba restaurant as part of a business get together and must say the surroundings are of their time, however their time is not now and the style is not for me.The food service was ok, however, I did have cutlery thrown over me and my table space (twice) as the tables were being cleared. The general quality of the food was acceptable, but it did not hit any high notes, also the coffee was a little flavourless.I have not had lunch or dinner here and think its ambiance would be better suited to the latter. However, it provides a function and is reasonably priced, but just lacks something, worth a visit, no, if you are invited – yes.

My wife and I dined here last evening. Very well looked after all evening. Each course nicely presented and delicious to the taste. This is a wonderfully relaxed venue with absolutely no pressure on the evening. There are several different wines on "the house list" - we choose a delightful Chilean Chardonnay that went down rather well. We took our post-prandial coffee back in the bar where the good customer care continued. 3-course dinner with wine & coffee & tip - £100. I look forward to the next excuse to go back there.

Was looking for a somewhat special lunch for my better half´s birthday and mentioned this when booking. Also asked whether there was a wedding that day and was told yes but not until 3.30 pm so we would not be affected.Food was fine overall. The main courses were tasty and well presented and we each enjoyed either our starter or dessert. However, the melba toast with the pate was simply toasted French bread and the summer fruits with meringue had all of two raspberries and half a strawberry. There were several other customers but all were eating from the bar menu. Twice we were asked whether we would like our full three course lunch in the bar area but we opted for the restaurant. It then transpired that the main restaurant was already laid out for the wedding so we were seated in an area between the restaurant and the bar at a table with what looked like a formica top and with no napkins. The arched windows, of which much was made on the website, had no blinds or curtains and looked out onto derelict land used as a car park. All in all not the setting that we had hoped for from the description and photos on the website and not our idea of the wedding not affecting our lunchtime enjoyment in any way.The outside of the building, which I have passed on many occasions, is impressive but our experience inside did not live up to expectations and we will not be returning.

AMAZING FOOD, staff and rooms. I have attended many weddings here and eat here most months so I am in very good position to comment. Helen and the staff are very pleasant and can't do enough for you, I'm hoping to have my work Xmas Party here at the end of year and would't consider anywhere else. For a weekend away, event or even Wedding you have to visit The Racquet Club, I love it.

Empfehlenswert

This a beautiful building and the bar and restaurant is a slightly odd mix of modern and antique that works really nicely. I had a really nice lunch it's not a big menu but I had salmon and it was really well cooked. The head waiter has been there for ever and is a charming man. The only drawback is that it's surprisingly a bit quiet.

We live in the city centre and have tried most of the restaurants in town. We were both delighted with the quality of the food and the service. The starter of crayfish and roll mop herring was a delight and the sirloin steak cooked perfectly followed by a a cheese plate that was one of the best I've had in some time, though it was enough for two to share. My girlfriend loved the goats cheese starter and goosnargh chicken main, followed by plum and cherry tart. Whole deal including a decent Sauvignon and a couple of beers was less than ninety quid, which is exceptional value compared to the likes of San Carlo and Restaurant Bar and Grill. Only downside was we felt the dining tables were a bit bistroish for a high end restaurant with such lovely decor, but we will definitely be back.

My wife and I like to dine well. At the Racquet Club we dined exceptionally well. The young waitress from Cornwall was excellent I think her name was Donna, and was married to the chef or was about to be. We met the chef after the meal as they left to go home and told him how much we enjoyed the food, the very modest man thanked me for the complement and said he would like us to return we have already booked a return meal and are taking friends with us.

I wanted to like this place. First up, the building is marvellous and the private room looks like it would be wonderful. The main restaurant where we were, however, was let down by cheap tables and chairs which gave a bit of a canteen quality, completely at odds with the surroundings. The service was good, but the food was a bit muddled, almost as if it was trying too hard?

Visited Ziba's on a friday night and were practically the only people there so the atmosphere was non existant. Waiter however was pleasant enough and explained it was unusually quiet. Menu choice was ok and food average. Main issue was my wife's main course which was described as a "vegetable tart". What arrived was a goat's cheese tart with some soggy veg. Waiter apologised and did not charge us but would not recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for gourmet food. It's an ok functional hotel restaurant. I won't be going back.

We tried going to Ziba for a drink. Went to the bar to order drinks to be asked if we were part of the party, when we said no, we were very rudely told that there was a private party on, with the balloons being pointed at around the room. Guess we should be mind readers as there were no signs on the door or door man to inform anyone of this. Simply rude and badly managed!.
