This lovely place certainly made an impression on us following a chance visit to get out of the rain. Me and my mum mostly had the small tapas dishes were were nice, nothing spectacular as far as Japanese food goes, but it wasn’t bad. Portions are tiny, the restaurant itself is also very small inside with only a few tables and mostly bar like seats, all stools rather than chairs. Services was good for the most part but very slow for certain dishes, particularly the Katsu dishes which took almost an hour. Anything other than that arrived pretty quickly though, so am not sure why. No sushi, no free selection of sashimi, very limited menu. Overall average at best, certainly not in my recommendations for Japanese or Asian restaurants in Manchester unfortunately.

The restaurant itself has a nice welcoming feel, the staff were friendly and helpful with regards to my allergy - confirming the food I ordered was nut-free. Had the tofu for starter, and veg and chicken udon bowls for meals. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, it tasted fresh and did not upset my stomach at all. I will definitely be returning to try the other dishes on the menu

We were here in Manchester for the night and for lunch the next day decided to try yuzu out as i had seen good things online, dont believe them, the food was bland and cold, the wait staff, especially the older lady was incredibly rude toward us and other white customers, the drinks rang was large but every thing i ordered was ‘out of stock’ the portion sizes were minuscule for the price too.

We went as we were in the area, highly disappointed. The food was greasy, bland, had barely any drinks and tasteless. We had the sashimi and it said it came with scallop, no scallop and the prawns and salmon were slimy and chewy. The vegetable tempura was greasy and tasteless and the prawn gyozas were burnt, greasy and had an odd flavour. The waitress who served us and took our food away was rude and very standoffish. Avoid!

Yuzu is a little gem around the corner in Chinatown. With a simple, minimalistic interior there’s a relaxed and charming feel to the place. We opted to choose several plates and share. The chicken yakitori practically melts in your mouth. The prawn tempura was so good we ordered a second portion (it wasn’t greasy at all), and the sashimi is possibly the best I’ve ever had. Those dishes were definitely the highlights but all the foods we tried were delicious. Our server Noa was really lovely and attentive. She was very polite to us and helped us out with the menus too. Food came out reasonably quickly. The umeshu sake I was recommended was nice and sweet. Our bill came to £64.50 which is pretty good for 3 people. I’d definitely recommend going here for a chilled time and great tasting Japanese cuisine.

Yuzu is a small and quaint Japanese restaurant in Manchester's Chinatown. When we went the fryer was unfortunately broken which meant a lot of things were off the menu, but I tried the Oyakodon on the specials board, and it was one of the best Japanese dishes I have ever tasted. If it's on specials again I highly recommend it!

As you may have seen from my other reviews I eat Japanese food a fair bit. It is always such a palette changer from what is usually available in England and when it is done fight well it is an entirely different experience. Walking into Yuzu you know immediately they are only halfway there. Yes the scene does look like a Japanese eatery with the open kitchen and bar for eating. The empty saki bottles and the head waitress but before you have sat down you also know it is not done properly. There is no welcoming greeting, the counter top is a little sticky and the height of the chairs compared to the table mean you are not quite the right size. Even when the food is put in front of you, no chopstick rest, the soy sauce provided in little jugs. It’s a good approximation, but it is an approximation. Despite all the accolades on the door from the various restaurant guides, If you do not know what you should be eating you probably would be quite satisfied. The food is Japanese, but the art of Japanese food starts with buying the right ingredients and they do not quite get there. The salmon is excellent, but the tuna is just tuna. The breadcrumbs on the tonkatsu were over cooked and possibly not of the style you would expect from Japan. The tempura is the biggest letdown. The batter should be bubbly and light instead of clinging to a thin film to what it is attached to. No shiitake, the aubergine thin and juiceless. It is a good effort but it is a little sad that the things that could be done better aren’t.But the price is reasonable even if portions are a little on the small side. Certainly it is an option if you are in Chinatown and don't want Chinese or Thai food.

I have never seen such rude restaurant staff ever in my life. We waited for 45 minutes and they didn’t even place chopsticks on our table. When we enquired about our food, the woman receptionist just waved us off!!!! No apology, no explanation, but wave us off! We can’t take this, so we just walked off. And the woman receptionist tried to stop us from leaving, and wanting us to pay for the food we didn’t eat as she said the food is almost ready. What is this logic? We waited 45 minutes for nothing and being waved like a dog, and she wanted us to pay for the food that we didn’t even eat.

This is a lovely little restaurant and the food is good. Went tonight with my sister and had a nice time but we were somewhat put off by how rudely one of the chefs spoke to a customer who tried to place his order with him. The customer clearly didn't know how to order but the chef practically told him off for trying to order with him and made no attempt to get a waiter to help him. Thankfully the waiter must have seen what had happened as he came over straight away but it was horrible to see a grown man being told off and treated like a naughty child for misunderstanding the ordering system. Maybe he was having a bad evening and food and other service was lovely but not pleasant to witness and must have been fairly humiliating for the man.

I have walked past here for years, so I'm glad I finally went in. We wandered in on the off-chance there would be space for two on a Thursday evening. Luckily there was, so we sat by the counter, which felt like you were nose to nose with the wall. It forces you to focus on the food or turn to talk to your dining companion. Most people were eating something from the set menu - probably the best value. Not being in the mood for rice, we shared gyoza, daikon and wakame salad, agedashi tofu and a large portion of sashimi mori. There wasn't any tuna, but they had pink sea bass. Everything tasted fresh and I particularly liked the yuzu dressing on the salad and the savoury tofu. The meal a light but satisfying and flavoursome, served without fuss.

I love their udon soup and their Katsu pork, service is always good but this is a small place, if you're coming on holidays or weekend I would suggest to book your seats before coming

Authentic Japanese food in general is hard to find in the UK... However thankfully somebody introduced Yuzu to me a few years back. For me it's everything Japanese food should be: fresh and delicate flavours, immaculate presentation, and ALWAYS consistent. I've been to Tokyo and enjoy most things Japanese, most importantly their culture. Yuzu is great value for money, in a nice casual and calm atmosphere. We're really lucky to have a restaurant like Yuzu in Manchester. It surprised me when I read some of the negative feedback for Yuzu, I suppose everyone is entitled to an opinion, it's just they're wrong (haha but serious). I can only imagine they just don't quite 'get it'. The place is focussed on delivering amazing food and drink, so if the service is a little slow at times, just get over it..and enjoy the experience. Favourite Dishes: Gyoza (the best I've ever had to date)Ebi Katsu Chicken Yaki Udon

Authentic simplicity at its best. Best Japanese food in Manchester; a tiny, teeny family run restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide, yet incredibly down to earth and excellent value for money. We shared prawn gyoza and chicken katsu for starters. The prawn gyoza....were plump prawns veiled in thin, stretchy, translucent dough. The chicken katsu was satisfyingly crunchy and succulent.I had the Organic Salmon Don for £8.95, which was salmon sashimi served over sushi seasoned rice with a side of crunchy, fresh pickled cucumber seasoned with the lightest touch of sesame oil. It was so good that I keep craving raw fish...a bit like Golemn from Lord of the Rings. This came accompanied by the best Miso I have ever tasted; earthy umami flavour, savoury, salty but light, complemented with a crunch of green onion served in a simple black lacquer bowl. Delicate, simple, flavourful. Washed down with a glass of plum wine.... why has this wine been kept a secret from me for rhe past 37 years!

Yuzu provides a simple atmosphere you would expect to get in an average Japanese restaurant meant for an every day nice quick meal, not a special or exceptional day. The food was definitely Japanese and something that a friend would have cooked informally to another friend. Looking at it so, it would not be a little bit of a problem. The humble setting did not make me doubt, only food could.I chose Yuzu because it had the highest rating of all the nearby restaurants and the menu looked a lot more varied than the others. When we arrived in front of it, we fell a little more in love with the idea of it.But then, the price and the hype around it can be slightly deceiving. Although the food is definitely not bad at all, and I could go back, it would definitely be because I would truly know the place. It would be like I am missing my life in Japan and I am re-incorporating the food as a routine not as a special moment. You see, I had the Teriyaki Salmon and the fish was clearly quality and corresponded to the price, especially as the menu specified that it was organic. But it was hard to taste the Teriyaki and a third of the salmon was a bit lost in a bit of overcooking (the outside on the other side of the skin), another third in undercooking (the inside) and a third, well as flaky and yummy as you would want, but caring little about exciting my palate beyond its lovely texture, not even with a bit of salt. The meal was accompanied by an average Miso soup, which I would deffinitely have again on a normal day coming out of work and not expecting luxury.I was accompanied there and we wanted to taste as many things as possible but that possibility was extremely limited. I came to spend in proportion to new exciting taste discoveries and I clearly had got the wrong place for that. The haricots verts on the side were done al dente, crunchy and had a lovely sauce and what I believe to be sesame seeds. This great little side was far too little for proper feast-savouring. As little as it as, it remain a little highlight. My daughter had the Tonkatsu and thought it was good. We both enjoyed the Japanese rice and to be honest, just being surrounded by some sense of Japan. The Kara-age she had as a starter was also good especially as the chicken was beautifully tender. Unfortunately, she was soon bored with the lack of excitement in it and did not finish it.We had a great time entertaining each other in spite of feeling that our expectations were poorly managed. There was enough of a Japanese setting, enough of japanese taste to help us enjoy ourselves. I would have preferred an eperience that would raise the ratings but maybe that is a pleasure that might be awarded to us another day, another time. Three and a half is ot bad a rating after all, even when the half cannot appear in this particular rating system.

Nothing much surprised with the taste after I ordered a lunch set Ten Don. I think is too pricey for the foods there.

Tuesday night, solo booking (reservation made on advice of other reviewers). Had to wait around for someone to show me to my seat, there were two waiters who were ran off their feet.I ordered a small sashimi mori - didn't have scallops which the menu said it should have. Otherwise sashimi were average. Tuna wasn't as sweet as I expected them to be. I had Tonkatsu set menu - the breaded pork was excellently cooked. Miso soup lukewarm and wished they had given me more than 10 strands of halved cooked cold beans. With 2 beers it came up to 33 pounds. A bit pricey in my opinion.I sat around the kitchen which had bottles of consumed sake to block my view of the action. Unfortunately the ledge where the bottles sat was lined with dust. Overall I think this is an average place. Disappointing given it was on the recent Michelin recommended list.

Pre-theatre meal of prawn Gyoza and Salmon teriyaki with Asahi dark beer (a first for me) beautifully cooked & served. Must book ahead as small venue. Never got chance to practice my recently aquired Nihon-go skills.

And the food wasn't bad. Completely ambivalent about everything else here. No harm done, no fond memories.

I came to Yuzu after a trip to Kyoto, Japan, having found no truly authentic Japanese restaurants in the North of England. Yuzu was my first experience of Japanese-style dining in England, bearing any resemblance to traditional Japanese cuisine, and I was not disappointed. With no sushi or ramen on the menu, Yuzu offers mainly donburi, udon and sashimi dishes, served in traditional lacquer ware bowls and trays. It also offers imported alcohol, and specials are updated regularly - consisting mainly of fresh grilled fish and meat. I had the tempura kishimen - a large bowl of flat noodles in a broth of subtle umami flavours alongside a dish of tempura veg and prawns. All elements were simple, but executed to perfection, with the broth requiring no extra seasoning, and the tempura being light and not oily as is so often the case. My only criticism, is I would love to see a few extra vegan or vegetarian options on the menu. Other than this, the food and service were immaculate, the setting was small and quiet, and the experience was a pleasure from start to finish. I cannot fault it!

We booked the Yuzu based on other reviews and was looking forward to visiting on a weekend stay in Manchester. The restaurant was small but cozy with bench style tables. Although arriving at 8 in the evening we were surprised quite a few of the dishes and drinks that we wanted were no longer available which curtailed our selection. Service was pleasant enough but mixed as they forgot to give us napkins and chopsticks with our first dish..which took a while to come out. Watching others, the waiters seem to be a little disorganised. I cannot fault the food which was well prepared and good....but having so many items taken off the menu list, so early in the evening, means that this restaurant ultimately disappointed a little. Would I go back there, probably yes....as the food that we did get was really nice.....but there is always that nagging doubt about not being able to get what I really want from the menu.

As soon as you walk in you feel you are back in Japan. From the decor to the quirky staff Yuzu feels very different to the typical Manchester restaurant. It's small, smells a little of 'cooking', and table layout is odd too. Staff seem all over the place and service is slow BUT this was one of the best Manchester dining experiences I have had for a long time. The food is exceptional, authentic and I will return.

Really good quality food. Service is a bit slow and the restaurant is pretty basic, but this place serves great sushi, hence being consistently busy. No wine or spirits on the menu..beer and sake only.

My daughter found this little Japanese restaurant for us and we're so pleased she did. Small and intimate, Yuzu lends itself well to casual dining. The four of us had a good selection of dishes on the menu and we enjoyed all of them and even went back for seconds! The gyoza dumplings were very good and the accompanying sauce full of flavour. You won't leave here feeling full if you stick to the sets only, but that is the way with Japanese restaurants- everything was fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. Good selection of Japanese beer and sake. Would definitely come back!

We had diner in this restaurant I found checking Michelin stars restaurants in Manchester. The place has a nice traditional atmosphere. The waitresses were really sympathetic and efficient. We had edamame and Yakitori chicken brochettes first then some tempura and sashimi with miso soup. It was all delicious and we ordered another plate made of udon rice pasta with prawns. Delicious as well. We drank barley and green tea and a Azahi black bear. We found the price really cheap for the quantity and the quality: 50pounds. Really worth it. I highly recommend!! Book your table in advance as they're not many tables there.
