This is a handy place to eat when visiting Whitby Abbey especially after climbing up the steps. Decent number of tables inside and out. It can get busy and likely there may be a queue. It is part of the Youth Hostel and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, cakes as well as larger meal options. We all had paninis which were nice enough and the side order of chips were nice. Nothing spectacular but it filled a gap well and with nice views.

This cafe is behind the visitors' centre to the abbey and is not English Heritage so could be difficult to find. It is run by and in support of the YHA. Access from the ruins is a little tricky as you have to enter the upper floor exhibition space of the Visitors' Centre, then go down stairs and exit through the main door (hand in any audio tours before leaving or you set off the alarm - you will have to collect audio machine(s) again if returning to the ruins. On leaving the Centre the café is behind you and to the left but can be accessed in either direction around to the back of building - anti-clockwise is probably best. Complex if you parked on the Headland Car Park and want a coffee before visiting the ruins. We enjoyed our visit with good coffee and selection of lovely cakes and friendly efficient service. There is a large indoor room or an outdoor grassy terrace overlooking the town.

Nearly went back to get an all day car parking ticket as wait for food took ages. How long does it take to prepare 2 paninas and a bowl of soup? Welcomed by the staff upon walking in and took through their cake and drinks selection, plenty of choices available both normal and gluten free if needed... Ordered a panini which arrived hot and gooey as expected with fresh salad to side, also ordered a small plate of battered items (jalapeno/onion/gherkin) which came with two dips and a full bowl of bites, well worth the cost! Coffee was nice and strong from a Sheffield roastery and paired well with the food, All of the cost goes towards a great cause and charity too and I would highly recommend this establishment after a walk around the abbey!

Located right behind the main entrance to Whitby Abbey, this is the best opportunity for coffee and cake after you’ve had a walk around the abbey. It was exceptionally busy when we went and had to wait a while for drinks to be made. It was warm and cosy inside but the tables were bunched in and there was not a lot of space. Outside there were some picnic tables but it was blowing a gale and was a bit cold to be sitting outside. The coffee was ok but nothing to write home about.

We visited here on a Sunday afternoon - the place wasn't busy so we thought we'd be fine. We waited 45 minutes for hummus and pitta bread and a lousy cold dish of frozen squelchy tasteless "mediterranean" veg and pitta. Something that you could hardly get wrong but it was vile and how it took so long to prepare is beyond me. We were also told that they had run out of some of the ingredients which also never made it to our plate but we were charged all the same. This place looks lovely but I'd give it a miss if you're expecting something decent to eat and prepare yourself for a long wait for disappointment.

After visiting the Abbey we decided to have lunch in the YHA run Abbey House Cafe. The cafe decor is a cross between shabby chic and cafeteria that somehow works. The burgers (especially the sweet potato fries) and jacket potato we ordered were delicious, the pizza, however, was doughy and bland. After climbing all the steps up to Whitby Abbey I'm usually ready for my reward (eg. coffee and cake). The Abbey House tearooms cafe used to be a rather basic, uninspiring and pretty functional canteen, but now it's much nicer with very pleasant contemporary decor and a good selection of snacks. If you grab a table seat by the window you'll be rewarded with some outstanding views of the surrounding area (Larpool Lane out towards Ruswarp, lovely hills and fields to the west, Whitby itself to the north). Very relaxing and welcoming tearoom, staff were courteous and friendly, coffee and toasted teacake with jam went down a treat.

We visited on a quiet Thursday lunchtime. Our initial response was “how lovely”. The tea rooms are next to the Abbey, but are run by the YHA, forming part of the Whitby YHA hostel. The decor and set up are very stylish and welcoming, the views from the tearooms over Whitby are fantastic. All this offered us much hope for our visit. We ordered a light lunch, tea for two a panini and sweet potato chips. There were ourselves and another couple in the tea rooms. We took our teas and began to slowly drink them, drinking them so slowly, that they had gone cold by our final sip. Meanwhile we were told that there was a problem with the gas so they couldn’t do the chips. (I accept these things happen so we were perhaps unlucky) We therefore agreed to have a garlic bread. Finally the panini and bread arrived. To be told the chips would soon follow. We ordered another tea, as we like to have a drink with our meal. We duly consumed the food which can only be described as very average. Service was painfully slow to say there was only the four of us in there. Just as we were about to leave the chips arrived. ♂️Would I return, yes, but will have the tea and cake and take in the views.

Sited at the Youth Hostel to the side of museum at Whitby Abbey, the Abbey House cafe/tea rooms have been recently refurbished to provide an altogether improved experience. Bar style tables and stools overlook the allotment side, and the windows overlooking the harbour now have a breakfast style bar made from scaffolding planks giving a brilliant view over the town. Some of the old beech type tables and chairs remain, which would be necessary to accommodate hostlers at breakfast, but there are also several sofas and easy chairs with low tables, too. There is a varied menu available, including vegetarian and gluten free options, as noted in other reviews. The cake selection is back to its best and the tea is strong with real milk, not UHT pods.

We ordered tea and scones. The scones were very dry and hard and did not come with cream. The tea was OK though I think would be better served in tea pots. The service was slow considering it was not busy and the counter was not organised at all. The till used was inbetween the drinks and the cakes so people we queueing at both ends for the one till or having to leave the queue to look at the cakes. Wouldn't it make sense to use the till at the end so people can go along choosing and then pay at the end/till? The cakes we also not labeled (as far as I could see) so even if I liked the look of a cake, how would I even know what it was to order it? There was no menu displayed at the counter and the cutlery, napkins etc were at the till which really slowed the queue even more. I had to type my pin with someone reaching over me for cutlery. These are all really minor things that I think could easily be changed. The views outside were very nice.

Quick stop for food and drink before enjoying a stroll down to the town in glorious sunshine. Waited far too long for a panini and a pizza, which when both arrived were depressingly undercooked. Managed to eat some of the food, since no waiting staff seemed to be around to highlight the issue with. Before leaving tackled a young staff member, who said he would speak to management but continued to clear tables. As we left, he returned saying that his boss would 'have a word'' with the kitchen staff. We both felt extremely rude to not apologise or speak with us in person. Having made the trip up to the Abbey (we went up the slightly easier footpath, which comes up alongside the YHA, then went down via the 199 Steps), we walked to Saltwick Bay along the cliff-top (Cleveland Way). Well worth a visit, beautiful beach! Our return coincided with "morning coffee time!". You can access the Abbey House Tearoom without paying to enter the Abbey itself. However, it being so bloomin` hot, we decided on tea, &, rather than a pot for 2, they just do mugs; but, a lovely cuppa it was too! Add to this a couple of pieces of rather delicious cake, & we were fighting fit until lunchtime! We sat inside (too hot for us outside, but there`s plenty of space out there!), & the Tearooms is very fresh looking, with attractive, different styled furniture & fittings. Friendly staff, great views from the window seats, and reasonably priced (good offer on tea & a slice of cake!) Recommended.

Wasted an hour of a valuable day out in lovely Whitby at this 'cafe'. Great location next to the Abbey with fantastic views both of which deserve a better venue. Simple order for 3 people took 55 mins to arrive with no real apology other than they were a but overwhelmed. Lunchtime in high season on regatta day was always likely to be quit busy I think so staff accordingly or stop taking orders. When food arrived it was bland, tasteless and terribly overpriced. Would suggest when you visit Whitby definitely visit the Abbey and climb the 199 steps but head back down to the town for food refreshments or take a picnic.Dreadful experience.

After a walk round the Abby we stopped here for a drink.Quite busy as you would expect but the service was quick. The prices were what to expect at a location like this.We sat outside and enjoyed the views over the harbour

No speciality of the day burger available at 12:30. Ordered overpriced children's meal spaghetti bolognese at £4.95 which came with a small cheap choc ice roughly the size of a pack of cards. Won't be going back.

It was a very rainy Thursday when we climbed up the 199 steps to get up to Whitby Abbey. Drenched we decided to check out the YHA cafe at the Abbey. What a great little gem it's basic but served great coffee and cake all for £3.50. What's not to like the Jaffa Cake was fantastic and Coffee was also very good. Check this place out great value for money in a touristy hotspot.

Came here just for 1 night with wife and 2 kids, Amazing place that most people would not consider, This was a surprise for the wife. As we pulled up she said "youth hostel really" but left the next day converted. The accommodation is basic but clean. The staff excellent and more than helpful. I will now look at YHA as 1st choice to look at now when looking for a short break with the family.

Yet another visit to our favourite YHA and so far so good, we have been here 5 times now and we always have a blast. The rooms are what you would expect but the staff are superb, nothing too much and a welcome like no other. The cookers are in need of up dating and the kitchen knifes are blunt I must remember to bring a decent knife sharpener next time. I am been picky about the kitchen as there is nothing else to say really. The staff make it !!Location is outstanding set in fantastic grounds. Will be coming back

We came to Whitby to see a friend but it also happened to be a Steampunk weekend. The hostel is an absolute gem. Five of us shared a dorm for only £44 each for two nights. The location, right next to the abbey, is stunning and it is only a ten minute walk into town. It is a steeper climb back up but not too bad. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful (thanks for our coffees!). The room was warm and clean, the beds reasonably comfortable, the shower powerful, and we had a nice view of the abbey. The hostel has a number of rooms to relax in downstairs and does breakfast for about a fiver, which is a bargain. You also get free entry into the abbey but the hostel itself is full of history.Whitby is a lovely town, we really enjoyed it here. There are many pretty little shops selling beautiful things and some good pubs too. There was nothing not to like about the hostel if you are looking for cheap accommodation for a few nights. We were really impressed and will be back another time.

We called in this cafe (open to non-residents) on the way back from a cliff top walk. There is designated seating for dog owners outside the cafe itself, but under cover - however on the day we visited (Jan) they were happy for us to take our dog inside. A nice cup of hot chocolate and tasty scone was the perfect finish to our coastal walk, with great views down over the town.Would recommend.

Spent 3 nights over New Year with family and friends (kids aged 3 to 17) and it is one of the best hostels I can recall - fantastic location for walks, going to the local pubs, the Abbey etc), very big so even large parties like ours don't feel like we are crowding people / being crowded, great facilities for both self catering and a bar / restaurant, and a real historical feel. The staff are the best thing though - very accommodating, happy for us to come and go, have a party, use the gardens to watch fireworks etc - thanks fellas!

This is a cheap and fantastic place to stay in Whitby. It is very close to the abbey, to the start of a footpath to Robin Hood's bay. Through 200 steps you can reach the city center. Very nice people. Clean. Highly suggested.

Very friendly. Simple clean comfortable room. Parking a bit of a struggle but the staff do their best. They gave us a parking permit for the turning area outside the Abbey overnight and we got a space outside the hostel the next morning. Great location right at the top of the famous Whitby Steps. The hostel is a grand historic building situated inside the Abbey Grounds. A bonus is free entry tickets to the Abbey itself.

Just got back from a weekend away here with my university. What an incredible hostel; the grounds were sublime and the building itself was original ans warming. We were told to order and pick our food choices in advance: I would just like to highlight how impressed I was that the hostel went to the effort to make me a gluten free sandwich. The vegetarian curry was also delightful. The deserts felt a little 'school dinners' but when you remind yourself you're at a hostel you can easily let it slip. I would definitely recommend this place, it's at the very top of the cliff and the views are insane.

Five friends and I stayed for 1 night on the 29th. Originally a girls weekend we have a private room for 3 which was £99 and hen we booked out three friends into the Male Dormitories at £35 each. What can I say about the place? The look of the place is amazing, the views stunning, the staff friendly. Inside you could see the age of the place and was saddened I didn't get chance to explore more. The room was what I expected, it was basic, a single bed and a set of bunk beds. We had our own toilet and sink and separate shower. I considered marking it down a point as, although it was clean and tidy, fresh bedding made, I found some elements dusty, but a few years ago I stayed in a Hilton Hotel in Nottingham and I found this hostel a lot cleaner therefore it gets my full five marks. Mattresses had a protective plastic/material covering but you couldn't tell when you slept on it. Pillows were fluffy and full and the duvet, I wanted to bring it home, it was cosy. You also had a radiator which you could control to your own setting. Boys dormitories consisted for 4 bunk beds, they had wooden lockers which needed a padlock which you can hire/buy from reception (Just a small padlock, a little bigger then a suitcase lock if you have one so would recommend you bring one, weirdly enough my friend randomly had one in his bag). In the reception you can buy various items from pens and toiletries to snacks and alcohol. However, my friend forgot her toothbrush, but you had to buy a kit with toothpaste, mouthwash etc which was a shame as she just needed a tooth brush so bought one down in Whitby. As well as been able to hire towels. You can use drying facilities and have access to a kitchen if you want to go self catering. There is also a tea room/restaurant, we ate there on the evening as we was going to the Abbey and didn't want to go down to Whitby to come back up. The food was good and fairly priced. We was all dressed up as it was Halloween weekend and the staff brought us some sweets over which went down a treat in the room later that night. After a few beers we came home around midnight and was peckish, the night man gave us a couple of places yet the only one to deliver was called 'Bitz & Pizza', third one we tried and said we wasn't on the list for delivery, when I asked if they could recommend someone who would as we don't live here he spoke to his boss and delivered to us (£30 order so good order really) number for them 01947 602020. (Tip: if you suffer from anything which walking up stairs could hinder, I recommend booking a taxi for a rough time you want to leave as it was hard getting one and had to flag one down.)The Abbey is a great visit, we did the night one but would love to go to the day one also. There is also a church and grave yard up the top which spectacular views of Whitby itself, you could also hunt for Dracula's grave (Hint: It has no name only a skull and cross bones). For the price, I felt I got what I paid for plus more purely for the view and surroundings and when there isn't any special events on I believe you can get a free pass to the Abbey. If this was a hotel, this location would cost into the hundred pound category easily.

Called in for fish and chips to share - £10. Opened the box to find the fish in three pieces. Rancid oil taste to both fish and hard chips. Truly the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.

Use this pub regularly drinks at good price food reasonable for this type of pub. Comfortable surroundings, not the best weatherspoons compared to many others. Come here regularly could do with more staff.

The cat's pyjamas? Dog's dinner more like. After initially nearly leaving due to the horrible atmosphere we settled and ordered a breakfast and avocado and halloumi on toast with two coffees. Our drinks arrived quickly but the food mustve taken about 45 minutes to come, with no acknowledgement of the long wait. It wasnt particularly busy. When the food arrived it was awful. The breakfast was greasy and badly cooked and I couldnt finish it. The avocado and halloumi on toast was literally a few slices of avocado and overcooked halloumi, on the side of some burnt toast. Dont bother, there are far nicer places in Scarborough.

For a large pub and the fact it was late on in the day on a Saturday, it was very clean and the staff were very polite. Food was good and nice selection of beer.
