Nut roast was the most bizzare concoction. As a vegetarian I've eaten scores of nut roasts, this one was like a pudding but really wet inside. I didn't eat it as I wasn't sure it was cooked. The chef said its supposed to be moist, it was sloppy rather than moist. I've eaten here before and enjoyed it but I wasn't taken with this dish. The location is lovely and the service was good.

Visited with my family and friends as a group of 7. Such a lovely warm and inviting traditional English countryside pub! We came for Sunday lunch and had cosy table by the bar with a bench on one side which I must say was very comfortable! The pub was busy with a great Sunday afternoon vibe. Considering it was busy, the service was excellent! Our main waitress was very attentive, smiley and patient as we dithered over our choices! I had the roast lamb and shared a side of cauliflower cheese with my husband. The meat was tasty and the giant homemade Yorkshire really topped it off! It was a perfect comforting roastie. All the puddings were a very generous size and I had the crumble which was certainly the best crumble I have had in a long time! The kids enjoyed their food too and probably down to the ambient atmosphere they were well behaved and happily colouring in while the adults chatted! We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back again soon!

A long wait ensued after ordering just the main course. Leg of lamb roast was awful. Cabbage was similar to frozen cabbage from asda, my fork had difficulty penetrating it, the leg of lamb was wafer thin from a packet and the frozen roast potatoes weren't even as good as Aunt Bessie's. This pub seems to be resting on the laurels of the previous owners who got such a good reputation. Will go back when current chef leaves

What a disappointment, this used to be a lovely place to eat and good value for money, I had Prawn and Avocado salad as a main course which consisted of a portion of prawns that would have been meagre as a starter and two pieces of avocado the size of a tangerine segment, four halves of a cherry tomato and a couple of slices of cucumber on a plateful of lettuce, highly over priced at £15 .Others in our group had the roast Beef which was tough and tasteless and roast potatoes which were under cooked. Hot deserts came out 10 minutes before the rest of the deserts so were cold by the time the rest came. will not be going back. On the plus side the waitress was very friendly

Been going here for decades and has always been popular but a recent visit very disappointed, a couple of us opted for the roast not a bad Yorkshire but chewy beef and the chef has no idea how to do a decent roast potato. Average prices but below average quality. There's plenty of places locally but will not be going back here

Grumpy greeting on arrival & the pub was almost empty, this use to be an amazing pub to eat in, along with a fine reputation for its food. Lunch today was poor, chips which were hard & you could'nt put your fork into. Salty Sussex Smokie & to be honest a very small portion. Side salad limp wet lettuce, tasteless vegetables too. We were a party of 4 who all left dissatisfied & hungry. Waitress more interested in closing doors at 3pm than any level of customer service. Wont be going back & do not reccommend.

The man behind the bar needs to learn how to smile he's the most miserable person to serve you can't not say thank or any thing. We moved away from the area been a way for 8 years and move back to eastbourne so thought we would go back to were the food is marvellous sure not its not . The whitebait is fried in bater and was cold £8 for 6 peice not worth it. The salmon salad was the only meal what was nice and the scampi was over cooked and was full of batter. Maybe got a new chef but that place on a Friday night was packed to 5he door and the food 8 years ago was marvellous don't go here it's crap. The only nice thing the two young lady which serve the food are plesent and no how and when to say thank you .the young lady said she would not charge us for the scampi but the unpleasant man was not having that £14.50 charge no refund disgusting.

Came here for lunch today, I had the Crispy pork belly. It was the largest piece of pork belly that I have ever seen! The veg was lovely as well. Then I had the banoffee pie, which was wonderful. Can't go wrong with banoffee pie. The staff were nice but there was one young man in particular that was so happy the whole time we were there. He seems ro genuinely like working there. Unfortunately, I didn't get his name, but he is a credit to the pub. We sat in the back garden, which is a lovely space with lots of trees, flowers, and plenty of chance for shade. All in all, beautiful pub, wonderful staff and tasty food. Will visit again!

A few years ago the Yew Tree used to be amazing. Packed every night and really good value for money. Last night will be the last time we visit. The food was mediocre at best. £14 for a small lasagna with some garlic bread. £22 for a piece of over cooked Sirloin(we asked for medium rare came up more like a bit of old leather). I think the streak had been in the freezer. Ordered Whitebait to start. 7 tiny pieces of fish for £7 got to be record. The place was empty which was unheard of a few years back but now we understand why.

I used to come to the Yew Tree back in the 1990s with my young family. It was a thriving, bustling business back then. Friday evening was the hottest evening this year so far, so my friend and I expected to have trouble getting in anywhere. Our first choice of pub, near to the Yew Tree was heaving and there was nowhere to park. So I suggested going to the Yew Tree. There were only 3 cars in the car park! We knew something was wrong and should have walked away. There was no welcome from the surly man behind the bar. I unwisely chose the roast lamb from the specials board. It was an appalling meal - reheated from many days before. The lamb was strangely lacking in colour, swimming in gravy and clearly reheated. The roast potatoes were dark brown and leathery. The Yorkshire puddings was dark brown, heavy, dry, and like leathery cardboard. The broccoli was squishy in places and yet uncooked and chewy in the middle. The waitress was brusque and rude beyond belief throughout. Her attitude was that we were a problem and not wanted. She snapped at me to put my small dog, who was asleep by my feet, on a lead or he would disturb the other customers! What other customers? During our visit there were only ever 4 to 6 other customers at a time and 7 in total. Other people clearly knew better. The food was over-priced at £14.50 for such poor food. Overall a very unpleasant dining experience. I shall never return. How sad to see such a once thriving business sink to such low standards.

Over the years I have been to this pub many times and enjoyed some great food. Today I took my mother and father for dinner having not been here for a number of years. I was shocked at how this wonderful place has gone down hill. From the very start I do not think I have ever met a more miserable barman. No warm greetings, no please or thank you just a barely functional exchange. On a positive note the waiting staff were friendly but OMG the food was awful! I cannot remember ever eating such rubbish,it was not freshly cooked but reheated. The cauliflower cheese was truly disgusting. There was not a single redeeming thing that I can say about the food. I was truly disappointed and will never eat here again.

Very rarely we entertain eating out these days apart from Birthdays special occasions, this being Fathers Day, we have had food from the pub before which has been generally quite good but this afternoon was pretty poor, the service was remarkably quick and the Pub was noticeably busy, the roast beef was very chewy and flavourless, roast potatoes were certainly not roasted at all possibly shown the oven ? The vegetables were quite possibly frozen and were flavourless and the red cabbage was pretty awful, my wife had the fish pie with salad garnish accompanied with rotting lettuce which was visibly black well past its sell by date....we didn't bother with pudding as the main meal was so disappointing. Forgot to mention the Yorkshire puddings which were quite substantial obviously spent far too much time in the oven compared to the roast pots.....heyho.

We’ve been here several times, and never really been disappointed. However, on Sunday, despite the pub not being busy, things were a bit hit and miss. All six of the lunches were cold, and the main courses came out in three servings over 10 minutes between 1st and last. All the roasts were fatty too, with hard uncooked vegetables. which is disappointing. The chicken was almost ok, as it does not have fat. Puddings were lacklustre and came totally frozen. It is a bit annoying, too, to have to pay each time you order a drink, or an extra pudding. Whatever happened to tabs? Other pubs, locally don’t mess about like this. 😟

Quite a date Inn, the restaurant appears to be stuck in the 80s, and the food wasn't that great. Turned up for my birthday after walking through the bluebell forest and working up a hunger! Greeted by a bartender who was a little abrupt, I asked if we could have lunch and she gave us a menu we asked to sit outside and if we could order a drink before going to find a seat, she responded that she can't give us a drink unless we come back and give a table number. Unless I opted to pay separately. We came back and ordered two of the roast lamb on their specials board. When it arrived the lamb was stacked on the plate and the potatoes were underneath a giant Yorkshire pudding - (for roast beef)! The lamb was chewy and the potatoes were not crispy and not cooked enough, the carrots served seperately were over cooked and the broccoli was undercooked. And to top it all the gravy tasted like boiled flavoured water and no mint sauce offered, so would NOT recommend the roast lamb at all.

We met some friends here for Sunday lunch. Good was really nice, but limited veggie options. I'm not keen on nut roast, but sadly all pubs see this as an easy/cheap option. 2 pies on specials, but both meat based. Perhaps a veggie option could be added for more veggie choice. Don't really want veggie curry for lunch when everyone else is having roast dinner. Could have done with a couple of more roast spuds and NO red cabbage. Puddings were to die for. Went for lunch with In Laws, ordered fish and chips as menu stated comes with mushy peas which for me really 'makes' a fish and chips as no one seems to offer them any more. Arrived and had garden peas swimming in all the scraps of other veg the chef had used his boiling water for. I was dissappinted and questioned with the waitress and she kindly said it was a mistake and they don't have mushy peas. Chips were not chips, they were thin fries. So not a great 'Fish and Chips'. I would have re-ordered a different dish but didn't want to cause a fuss with the inlaws present. Dessert menu had incorrect/ no longer on menu desserts on them. Sticky toffee pudding was nice but a bit small and very basic, no garnishes etc... Prices are on par with other pubs. Service by the young lady was good but as per other reviews; barman lacks a smile haha.

This place doesn't live up to it's reputation unfortunately. Went for a meal Thursday evening, and the place was dead. I thought then, this is a bad sign. I ordered the belly pork with mustard mush and braised red cabbage. The mash tasted like it was microwabable mash, there was no flavour is the braised red cabbage it was just sweetness. My fiance had the pie if the day (which the waitress wasn't even sure if they had a pie of the day on?) It was mint and lamb. His pie was tiny and not presented well at all! Literally just a square of pastry plopped in top of the pie mix. There was hardly any meat and the gravy was instant gravy. My daughter had the Mac cheese. I'm sorry, but what they served it in looked like a cat's dish and it tasted of nothing. By then my fiance and I decided not to bother with the deserts but my daughter had vanilla ice cream. She got one scoop. Very disappointed. Next time, I think I'll stay at home because my partner and I can cook better than that with our eyes closed and the portions are bigger and cheaper.

An excellent meal - hot and tasty. Staff friendly and efficient. Didnt have to wait too long for the meal. The atmosphere was warm and cosy and we didn't have to rush.

Didn't eat here, just a lunchtime drink. Pleasant enough when on an Arlington Reservoir circuit walk!

All the waiting staff were lovely, the food was really nice, garden lovely to hang out in on a sunny afternoon but the bar manager was incredibly miserable. It didn't spoil our day out but it did give us something to laugh about on the way home. Didn't even say thank you when we complimented his food and staff and paid a tip. Would still recommend and I set anyone the challenge of making him smile.

Food was okay but staff were unfriendly and bordering on rude. We were told it was table service only when we asked for a drink at the bar then saw others ordering from the bar. The waitress told us twice that it was table service only….it’s a pub you should be able to get a drink from the bar in an empty pub.

This was a real favorite of mine for years but having not visited for around 5 years I was disappointed . The garden was hugely improved and staff very pleasant but the Sussex smokie was very small ... no hint of mustard . Salad was browning on the edges and coffee cold . Don't think I will be returning . Very sad after such fond memories .

An unwelcoming host did nothing to improve a midweek evening. Chicken salad included bones, by all means use cheaper ingredients but don't leave the customer to remove the bones. Burger was overcooked and dry. Sussex Smokie pleasantly microwaved. Bill was not exorbitant.

Took the kayak down the beach and has a lovely beer here. Garden has superb view of the sea. Had the feeling of a throwback social club without feeling old or tired. Outdoor area was a great place to sit. Can't give too much comment on the food as didn't eat but what was coming out looked good.

The lovely staff here managed to squeeze me and my family in for a roast a couple of weeks ago and were very accommodating of my small children. Service was efficient and very professional, the pub was cosy and atmospheric and above all the food was top notch - the best roast I’ve had in years. We will be back!
