We had an absolutely brilliant lunch here. Despite being Easter Monday, the pub wasn't very busy (it really deserves to be) and we nestled in to its incredibly ancient interior. Everything the four of us ordered was faultless and delicious, from a simple burger to the perfect pork belly roast. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. This was a delightful and happy experience and we'll be back.

Lovely little pub with great staff who were very accommodating to my young child, along with substantial portions of very good food. Would highly recommend the scotch egg as a starter or bar snack, and the roast was the best pork belly I’ve ever had. Had sticky toffee pudding for dessert, and while the whisky custard was delicious, the pudding itself felt a little stale. Others had the brownie and ice cream which were delightful. Would absolutely recommend.

Absolutely delicious roast today even though we were 5 minutes from the kitchen closing. Pork belly so crispy and not a bit of fat, it pulled apart very satisfyingly and was so succulent. The potatoes were crispy as was the parsnip. Giant Yorkshire, crispy on outside and fluffy in the centre.

Now under new ownership, lovely pub, lovely location, new owners nice, the blonde lady behind the bar should not be working in hospitality, very rude, short and miserable looking, didn't want to engage when asking about the menu. Unfortunately it's tough times for pubs and as a business owner myself I feel that this staff members attitude could have severe consequences for the future of this lovely pub

Stayed in an AirBNB in the village and had Sunday lunch which was excellent. Great quality and portions, good service and well kept ale. The pub was obviously very popular. The only negative point was that the pub was cold. I don't normally feel the cold but I kept my jacket on. Unfortunately we tried to call back in for an evening drink but the pub was closed despite the fact that their website and Google said they were open. Good job we didn't walk far.

Very disappointing meal. We were there in a group of 6 friends. 4 of the meals were fine, nothing out of the ordinary but 2 of them were inedible. One, the seafood Lasagne, was just a very dry solid mass. It was dry and tasteless. It seemed like something cooked the day before, left overnight to go cold into a dry block. It was dry and tasteless. I only ate a few mouthfuls and left it. That was £25. When the waitress came to collect my plate I explained why I had not eaten it. She made absolutely no comment, no sorry. The other meal was a Cajun burger, minus the Cajun. It had no flavour was dry and tasteless. The chips that accompanied it were overcooked to the point of being almost black. When the waitress was told she returned with a fresh bowls of chips. At the end of the meal we were surprised that there had been no allowance for the 2 uneaten meals and queried the bill. We were given 10% of both the main courses, a deduction of £4.40 against a £270 bill. We will definitely not be returning.

Outstanding food and hospitality in a beautiful pub/restaurant. My husband and I had the perfect Friday night out here. The menu was amazing, making it so difficult to choose what to eat. We both ended up choosing the chicken, chorizo and cheddar croquettes for starter, my husband went for the rib of beef and dauphinois potatoes for main and I opted for the vegetable and cashew curry. Even though we were full we couldn’t resist going for a dessert - raspberry and pistachio cheesecake and spiced apple crumble. Everything was delicious, so much work must have gone into preparing the food. We will 100% be visiting again soon as I believe the menu changes and I’d love to try a Sunday Roast. Hannah and Richard were so welcoming and hospitable too, and the pub itself is gorgeous, with a lovely, cosy ambience. I will be recommending this pub to everyone!

So sad that, after many delightful visits to this lovely pub, we were so disappointed with our meal. From a very reduced and uninteresting menu, we chose the beef & stilton pie - which was unavailable so we had the suggested alternative - chicken pie. This was a big mistake. We were served a pile of mash on which a very commercial-looking pie was oddly - and precariously - balanced. The mash was surrounded by a glaucous beige concoction purporting to be gravy. 'Nothing ventured....' we said and attempted to eat. The mash was lumpy - can't eat that, the pie was tasteless and the gravy was revolting. Having had no breakfast, Husband managed to eat most of his, saying, 'My Mum was a terrible cook and this is no worse than hers.' I was not so stoic and just left it, eating only the side dish of vegetables which were OK. As always, the service was charming but could not compensate for the appalling food. The menu appears to have changed slightly and the latest reviews are good but do we dare to try again?

Old pub, new management. We came along unannounced on a dark winter’s evening and had a very warm welcome - not only from the new owners but from their 3-dog entourage (a pointer, ‘Smartie’, and an accompanying duo of dachshunds). I had a burger and unusually was asked how I would like it, like they do in France with steak haché, which was a nice touch. It was extremely good, chunky pickled gherkins and all. My partner enjoyed a crispy chunk of salmon too. We wish The Old Yew Tree much luck!

Busy Bank Holiday weekend, garden full even at 12:30 I told my friend to book just in case and glad we did. I've eaten here on a number of occasions and never been disappointed. Today was no exception, the staff are friendly and the food is generally a high standard, not too cheap but good portions and tasty sauces, whatever some negative reviewers might say. I first came here in the early 1980's when it was a much smaller pub with a small counter by the corner and people playing domino's and shove Ha penny at the bar or cribbage! It's got bags of character and simple seating with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Be sure to ring and book just in case! Great place to start or end a walk from! Often full of walkers and cyclists as well as car trade! Small car park at rear of property, if you have elderly or disabled guests drop them off before parking as the pub is located overlooking the former quarry pits in the valley below!

Food was hit and miss. Half of mine was delicious, but the potatoes were dry and chewy. Obviously microwaved. Chips were lovely, however kids meal is incredibly insulting. £8 for pizza and chips and the pizza is nothing more than a supermarket individual margarita which costs no more than 80p. It was also burnt to a crisp. I don’t understand why country pubs such as this really let themselves down with the kids meals. One member of staff was very unwelcoming. Grumpy and miserable. Food - absolutely delicious - good amount of choice even on the set lunch menu and it far exceeded our expectations. In fact, we would say the photos do not do the food justice - and we're pretty fussy. Our only grumble about the first two courses was that we had no room for a third despite the tempting choices! We'll pace ourselves better next time. Service was very friendly with just the right amount of attention. The building itself is fascinating and our only small moan is that we were rather cold despite the token fire in the amazing inglenook fireplace. It's understandable that there can be no central heating in such a historic building so this is just a warning to wrap up warm!

Roast heaven. This is the gold standard of Sunday Roasts locally. Tender new season kentish lamb, roast potatoes with crunch but fluffy inside and al dente vegetables (with cabbage lightly tossed in a little olive oil). Companions had beef and slow roast pork belly (fat beautifully rendered and perfect crackling - I pinched some), both praised similarly. Leave room for the desserts. Service professional and just right despite being very busy. Not a gourmet pub but a very high level of cooking plus a lovely and very historical setting.
