I will always from now on, highly recommend the Windmill to anyone I know. It's lovely inside and the staff are just as lovely. It was recommended to me by a friend so l booked a surprise meal there for my nans birthday and everyone had the best night and enjoyed their food. Service was incredible, food was delicious and the night over all was so much tun. Very relaxed vibe in there, lots of food to choose from and drinks too. Thank you so much to the staff at the Windmill! We will most definitely, be coming back soon.

I went with a group of 10 family members to be together for an anniversary of my partners Dad's birthday - who sadly passed away last year. The atmosphere was lovely, the staff were very accommodating and the carvery was just amazing. Everything you could wish for on a plate for Sunday lunch! We'll done to all the staff - keep up the fantastic work! The only thing I would make people aware of is having to go up some quite steep stairs for the carvery, which could be tricky for the less mobile.

Loved the windmill for years and was looking forward to visiting again as we hadn't been for a couple of years. It was great to see a few of the old faces that still use the bar and have a catch up and the beer is still a great pint. Missed seeing Dennis but good to hear he is enjoying his retirement. Was looking forward to the famous Windmills good sized portions but here is where it all went downhill the food though I must state is still great seems to have shrunk! I honestly thought i had mistakenly ordered off the children's menu! and for this reason I'm gutted to say we won't be going back again for food. Staff was as polite and friendly as ever and will go back at some point for a beer in the bar area to see some of the ole faces again but really gutted about the food size.

Have visited the Windmill on numerous occasions, more particularly for the Sunday carvery. The food never fails, it’s delicious! Good choice of meats and certainly don’t scrimp on the meat like a lot of places. Good choice of vegetables and potatoes and can have as much as you like! Definitely value for money. The lady (sorry I don’t know her name) who is behind the counter serving the carvery is so friendly, serves with a smile and always takes the time to have a chat. Nothing is too much trouble for her and she keeps my daughter (who is a fussy eater) well supplied with the Yorkshire puddings. I definitely recommend a visit and we as a family will be visiting on a regular basis

We really wanted to enjoy our meal, as the Windmill is our local pub, and the food in the past has been excellent. We hoped the new ownership and menus might mean things were improving. On walking into the bar area, my elderly mother wanted to sit by the fire- we were told that the table was reserved, but nobody sat there during our stay. The barmaid and guy serving the food were both friendly and cheerful, but the food was average, especially when compared to other local places we've recently eaten at. Whilst the Windmill was cheaper than the other places, both our meals were bland, and the bar area now looks tired and dark. It could really do with a refurb. I'm afraid we won't be coming back again, despite the 25% off our next meal offer, which is sad.

We're really not happy with our visit today we have been coming to the windmill for about 40 years and this is the longest wait for food took over an hour for food to get the table (this was being echoed by everyone else in the restaurant, all experiencing long wait times!) Not to mention that when the food did arrive it was luke warm, we had to send one meal back to be reheated as it was cold, everything on the plate was different temperatures with cold chips and hot meat. The menu said it was £9.95 for scampi and chips and the hunters chicken however we were charged £12 for them. We didn't get the chunky chips mentioned in the menu, it was fries all round we did mention it to the waiter who said "we ran out so had to just do fries" There was no apologies given for the wait on food or for the temperature of the food. Only a "it's been a very busy couple of days"

Christmas Day lunch . The service was a mix up . Nobody knew what they were doing .. paying over £70 per person you would expect a good service .. The dinner plates were not removed from the table when the puddings came.. Christmas pudding was served with a fork .. I asked for a spoon as it’s difficult to eat custard with a fork .. the answer was we haven’t got any as we are behind with the washing up !! We wasn’t offered mince pies or coffee either which was included.. The family on the next table were served mince pies by the manager who just plonked them straight on the table with his hands without any plates .. shocking.. needless to say we were all very disappointed at the whole experience.. Sorry wont be coming again

I've found this place to be hit and miss over the years. Booked a table for early doors today on a Sunday. I ordered the lamb hotpot, only thing to complain there was the "wrong veg" advertised with tenderstem broccoli but ended up with some lovely roasted carrots, cabbage & leek, not a bad swap! My companions ordered the sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce, both steaks cooked to perfection. No table service seemed to be offered in the upstairs dining area, however service on the bar was quick, with a lovely selection of wines. Food came in a timely manner. All reasonably priced. Staff check backs were bang on, even had a check back on our desserts! Already booked again for a couple weeks time to try the carvery which looked amazing!

The windmill is a central place that my ex work colleagues meet at and have a catch up. The restaurant is ok - it never changes much even though it’s been refurbed. I can only comment on my food - it was average, barely average. Pretty dry ( over cooked ) and not huge in portion size. I’ve eaten at this pub so many times over the last 35 years and know that its reputation was fantastic and I would say the food was the worst I’ve had: the staff are friendly, the company was great but still feel there’s so much room for improvement. The loos aren’t great …never have been. Won’t rush back for the food.

Where do I start ? Been about 5 or 6 times and every single time it has been superb. The carvery on a Sunday is just fantastic. The (massive) Yorkshire puddings are hand made by the chef. She is proper lovely and very friendly. Decent serving of meat and the veg is well cooked and plentiful. It`s not in massive trays so gets used up and replaced on a regular basis so it never gets hard or soggy. Top grub. The ales are cracking. Had some really nice beers. And last, and certainly not least, are the staff..... Everyone actually seems to enjoy being there and has a smile on their face and is very welcoming. Such a rarity nowadays ! Will I be back ? You bet I will. Highly highly recommended. Oh and as a bonus it`s also dog friendly. I took my mutt for a walk over Gentleshaw Common (a really nice place) and popped in for a quick pint. TOP place.

Been going to this lovely pub for 30 years +. What can I say, cod and chips gone from the menu and the cottage pie was to die for. Got there for 6pm and normally it would be packed, however there were only 3 tables being used. I was gutted the above was missing from the menu so ordered the lasagne……. The lasagne just tasted of tomato and could not eat the garlic bread as it was harder than the plate it was served on. I bought it to the attention of the waiter and he just smiled and asked me 3 times if I wanted another one. I heard the table next to me say their food was cold. It’s a real shame, it’s where we would always go for family get togethers but the food is not far off weatherspoons standard. May sound harsh but unfortunately true. We visited this restaurant this afternoon as a family. We were disgusted with the food served. £21.95 for a 10oz rib eye steak which was served on a child’s plate with 12 chips & a small bit of salad& also 2 greasy onion rings. How that kind of money this is disgusting. Asked for a medium/well done 16oz rump steak which came out with blood dripping from it, that is not medium/well. Someone in the party had mashed potato which wasn’t even fresh it was cold & tasted like it was a powdery packet mix. This has completely ruined our Sunday afternoon out, we will NOT be visiting again. The prices are extortionate for disgusting food ….

Met a friend here for lunch. We both had the Caesar Salad which I forgot to take a picture of, and we shared a side of chips. The salad was delicious, the dressing, the combination of the perfectly cooked chicken and the slightly salty crispy bacon was a delight. The croutons were fantastic too, big, chunky and not at all greasy. The chips were also really really good. Now I was actually full after the salad so it's a good job that I have a pudding tummy too for the sticky toffee pudding, pictured. Delightful. We have been using the pub for several years and have noticed a change for the worse since Red Cat took over. We always enjoyed the Ploughman's lunch but this was taken off the menu after the take over The staff are excellent and friendly as is the licencee and service is good However we have noticed a change in the food as the portion size and quantity seems to have dropped off A few weeks ago I made comment to a staff member regarding the very small amount of cheese in my baguette and the small portion of chips accompanying it We visited again on 28 April and noticed the menu had changed and were disappointed to find out that sandwiches are not available on Sundays We really wanted sandwiches but I opted for the steak pie instead. The pie was not a full pie but a dish of meat with a puff pastry top. There was plenty of meat which was tender and the gravy was tasty. The menu stated it was served with roasted cartots and seasonal greens which turned out to be 2 little carrots and a very small cabbage leaf! It was also served with a very small portion of chips which were undercooked and certainly not the "chunky chips" advertised on the menu We did not get chance to mention this to staff as no one visited our table after our food was served and there was a large number of people arriving filling the bar which occupied the attention of the staff We will continue to use the pub for drinks as we really enjoy visiting but will not be ordering food for the foreseeable future

Unfortunately I didn't get to try anything at this cafe. My party and another party stood waiting to be sitted, 3 members of staff walked past and said "be with you in a minute" that minute never came, so we all walked out and went next door to the 'Dam good cafe' which was fine.
