We came here on a Tuesday evening - the pub was out of a lot of dishes but that didn’t affect our order. The Greene King pub boasts a lot of craft ales and lagers and a medium house wine 🍷 was a steal at £5.40. I’d recommend the burger 🍔

What an amazing pub / restaurant this is !! It is hidden down an alley way in York city centre but you can’t miss it as it has a massive sign that expands across the whole street. David, Steve and Aidey are awesome and so welcoming !! But hats off and a massive thank you to Harvey. We had an issue that was no fault at all of the Inn, but Harvey was soo helpful and accommodating beyond what he needed to do !! What an amazing person he is! Claims to be from 1644, during the English Civil War and thus the oldest pub in York. ( When the Woke Puritans killed you for being happy.) Been a few times but gets crammed with tourists. A good selection of real ales. Mainly Greene King but good guest ales. Boothroyd had the house bitter. Madge a good pinot blush...a glass..not a pint.. The sign that crosses the road in one of only a few left in England. ( One in Stamford, Lincolnshire we visited in 2018.) Lovely interior when not crammed. Several rooms and outside seating wraps around the pub.

Brilliant experience and absolutely would go again if I'm ever in York. Not only is the rusticity of the food and the pub itself comforting for any time of day, the food itself is spot on. The classic steak and ale pie was perfect, and is one of the best, if not, the best steak and ale pie I've had. The chips are very nicely done and it's overall a hearty meal that'll certainly fill you up, whilst maintaining some balance. If you've got room, the sticky toffee pudding is also lovely - very rich and delectable, whilst still being a simple dish. However, the best part might be the very reasonable price for the food. The portions are more than generous for the amount you pay, and this is not always the case at pubs. Last but not least, the staff are also very friendly and helpful, making this an all-round outstanding pub.

A friend and I were on a trip to York, this place sounded good as it was an old Ale house. We went for the classic British Pie & mash, the service was great, fast and professional. The food was served in good time, and they were busy too. Food was very good, a decent pie, I liked the grilled cabbage also, mash wah good along with a little pan of extra gravy. Couldn't fault the place or the service, good job everyone that works there 😎👍👌

Ye Olde Starre Inn is right in the tourist centre of York, so you could never call it a “local” pub. It is however a most pleasant place to go for a drink. It is a spacious and good looking pub with lots of dark wood furnishings and panelled walls, some with decorative glass panelling and dividers. The fact that there are several little nooks and crannies also lends the place a generally cosy feel and we enjoyed our visit. The service and the ales were all very good.

We visited the pub for a drink but then decided to have desserts. We opted for the apple pie and sticky toffee pudding. I asked beforehand if the apple pie came hot and it did. I had it with custard. My mum had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. Both arrived promptly. The apple pie was good, not very sweet. The sticky toffee pudding was a huge portion and far too sweet. It came with ice cream which was delicious BTW. . All in all I would say less sugar in one and more love in the other. The atmosphere was good. It was chilled and cosy. I've only realised that it was a Greene King afterwards. Not very well advertised. Other than that, I think we might be back for couple of drinks soon.

Great old pub bang in the centre of York, we visited with our two young boys and had a lovely pub lunch, the pies were lovely and they had a good selection of drinks on draught, prices on par with the other pubs in the vicinity, we were there on a Thursday afternoon during the school holidays and had no trouble finding a table but I would imagine it gets very busy during weekends, we would recommend visiting for a refreshing drink or food.

My wife and I decided to have a meal in one of Yorks oldest licensed premises. Approaching it through the alleyway, it opens up into an outdoor courtyard and smoking area. The pub itself is lovely - it’s an old building with many small rooms where none of the walls, floors or doorways are straight. It has character to spare! Bar service (after 6 on a Friday evening) was quick and friendly. I had a pint of a local brew - Ainsty Ale’s Flummoxed Farmer which was delicious, and my wife had a large vodka and lemonade, served with a large slice of lime, which she said was lovely. We ordered burgers - I had the Korean burger and my wife had the cheese and bacon burger, both with home made onion rings and triple cooked chips and people? They were AMAZING! I would heartily recommend this pub to anyone - good beer, good food and great friendly service. It is what every pub should be!

Cracking establishment that’s been a paragon of good beer and great hospitality for a long, long time. That the high standards and excellent service on display here have remained intact over the years is something to be applauded. Rather fitting given this is one of the oldest public houses in the ancient City of York. If you’re after an excellent pint in a friendly, hospitable and traditional British pub, come here. They’ve got it spot on.

We visited during the Christmas period, had no trouble booking a table for two, the menu drew us in as we knew we wanted a cheeseboard which is hard to find in York and decent veggie options. We had nachos to start which were a nice sharer and the pulled mushroom chilli which was gorgeous, really tasty! The cheeseboard didn’t disappoint either and was enjoyed by candlelight in a cosy environment. We loved the history of the pub and all the facts placed around the place. Only negative was the toilets, they need some love. Will always return.

Lovely medieval old pub, slanted roof's, crooked doorways, old wooden floors, windows slanted, arched entrance way into a lovely court yard. We had Christmas day here with the family, my wife booked the table with the help of John (manager) , he looked after every single detail for our time here, arranged for us to have a cosy corner, the food altered (for the kids), John's customer service is outstanding, we seriously all had the best Christmas ever thanks to John.
