4 of us were on a trip to York and decided to have lunch here. 3 of us ordered fish and chips. 1 of our party had a sweet. The orders come. 1 sweet and 2 fish and chips. We told the young man we had ordered 3 fish. He said " so sorry about this" he went off and we waited a couple of minutes and order was complete. Lovely lunch. One draw back tea and coffee machine out of order.

We arrived 20 minutes early for our Sunday lunch booking to be told there were no roasts available as they had sold out. Other menu options were limited. The 'salad' consisted of lettuce leaves, with a couple of tomatoes, topped with a Ragu pasta sauce, a very strange combination and at £15 very poor value ! The IPA chicken burger was tasty but very beige. Vegetarian options are very poor. Drinks were expensive.

Absolutely awful meal. Unfortunately chose the mussels in a creamy sauce with chip. A lot of the mussels didn't open, the sauce was like dish water (in fact, even though I've never tried it, I'm sure dish water is tastier). The strangest thing of all was the bowl of 'mayo' concoction that looked like a horde of people had already dunked food into. It was served with chips which were so heavily spiced you really couldn't taste anything else. To the pub, if you're going to try to provide mussels and chips (moules en frite) please TRY to make a proper sauce and serve with french fries and bread. Alternatively go to Morrisons and buy a pack already prepared for £2.65.

On a very wet day in York, we were pleased to see the gallows sign across Stonegate. Th very old pub is up an alley. We had a good lunch of selections from the Light Bites menu. Prices for food were more reasonable than for drinks which struck me as a little expensive. Service was good. Our disabled friend had no problems accessing the facilities.

The food was mostly good, my house salad was great but the chicken was very dry (prolly grilled earlier during the day). The mac n cheese were ok and the sticky toffee pudding was really good - delicious and moist. The good vibes of the place and nice staff really make up for any downers on the food side. Best part was the 'invisible mac n cheese' from the menu: ordering it gives you nothing but your 1 pound goes to a cancer charity.

Beautiful old pub with an incredible history, staff were great and the place is well maintained. My only complaint is the music that was playing whilst we were there, modern pop I guess, it did not suite the atmosphere of the building at all and soured the experience for us slightly. Other than the music a great place to visit, great ales too!

A great, atmospheric pub right in the centre of York! With a good variety of drinks, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic at reasonable prices. Their are many seats inside with a cosy, heated beer garden umbrella's on tables (just incase of rain!) & a wide-screen T V. Washrooms for men, women & disabled. Friendly, quick service from staff! Great c1640 pub. Food menu was good. Atmosphere was great. Staff were friendly and helpful and efficient. Chef knows how to cook a real burger. We actually missed it, so if you see the banner over the street look down and find the little alley that leads through to the pub. Costa about the same as most other places in York we have tried but the food was much better. Plus it’s almost opposite the German Christmas shop.

On the same day we visited both Ye Olde Starre Inne and Lendal Cellars in York, both Greene King pubs participating in the summer sale of Amstel lager. Unfortunately, the pint at Ye Olde Starre Inne had a terrible aftertaste. However, just 10 minutes later, the same drink (Amstel) at Lendal Cellars was significantly better. Greene King definitely needs to implement some quality control measures. That said, thanks for the summer sale! I’ll be posting this review for both pubs. Well done, Lendal Cellars!

Imagine drinking a fine beer in the oldest pub in York. Established in 1644 the pub retains the fragrance, aura and the feel of a time long gone. Yet I felt transported back in time as I enjoyed my local dark beer and a plate of homemade fries. The bartender offered me a taste of three local beers, that itself very interesting. So I chose and settled in amidst the era of nobility and enjoyed a fine drink. Why don’t you? It’s right at one end of Shabbles: the iconic street in York.

An almost hidden gem (their sign spans stonegate so you can't really miss it) on one of Yorks busiest shopping streets but you may miss the entrance. As well as the pub itself, there are 3 little courtyards for you to enjoy your beer and dog friendly to boot. Pricing is light on the pocket and the atmosphere during the day is peaceful, perfect for a small break and to put down those shopping bags. At night, it can be electric, great for those wanting to start their evening with a buzz of excitement before venturing out for further entertainment.

a historic pub. although we were served by a learner, you could easily tell she was dedicated to her job and did her very best. our food arrived a little later than expected due to understaffing, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the food. the onion rings were the best I've put in my mouth, by the way. the outside seating made the tables wobbly, but what can you expect. the music was subtle and cheerful but not fitting to the name "oldest pub in york". overall, I would come back here wanting more onion rings, good for a humble night out.

We had lunch yesterday at this pub, it was a lovely old pub. We sat in the sunshine outside enjoying the atmosphere but unfortunately the food was poor. The steak and ale pie didn't have any meat in it. I didn't make a fuss as we were with some lovely friends and I didn't want upset our day. If you order the pie , remove the top and check inside. Picked this place out of many for a Sunday roast. Considering the price point of £16 we thought we were in for a treat, unfortunately we were wrong. We both got the beef and it was tough as rubber. They had ran out of carrots and decided to just not tell us until we asked where they were. All of the items that accompanied the beef were very small portions apart from a huge wedge of charred Cabbage that they used to hide the fact that there was barely anything else on the plate. First and last time eating here to say the least.

Nice pub with a nice little beer garden. I only rated 2 because it was so expensive. We had 1 cranberry juice and 1 pint of camden ale and that cost £11.15 which I thought was a complete rip off, especially for a greene king, I'm convinced the staff just put in any price and ripped us off. We went to Lendal Cellar, also a green king and also in York centre and that was £9.80 for half pint of lillys cider and a pint of IPA which makes me think even more that this pub purposely overcharged. Wouldn't return based on price

Pre booked a table for 5 on a Saturday lunchtime in York (we were recommended by a friend). The welcome from the man at the bar was really personal and the lady that served our food was great too. We all ordered food, it all arrived together piping hot and was very tasty-excellent value for money-5 empty plates. The place was really busy and had a great atmosphere. I might suggest more staff as the ones there, were really busy all the time (but they still managed to provide great customer service). We would definitely go back and recommend to others

Noticed this pub was completely empty as we were passing so thought we'd help boost their sales. We soon realised why it's empty. They were unwelcoming and awkward about my friend's assistance dog and said the dog wasn't allowed. We had to explain what an assistance dog was and my friend is registered disabled (not a great , welcoming start). The barmaid put her glasses on and leaned over the bar to inspect his harness before we were allowed to order a drink..... I asked what white wine they had and they only had one. I asked if I could try a tiny taste to make sure I liked it - no that's not allowed either. We promptly left before any more rules could be forced upon us and headed down the road where our custom was more welcome.
