Popped in for a beer and despite the wide variety of beers the bar staff were incredibly rude and grumpy. Definitely no jolly publican here! Ask for a tester of a beer and that's a big no! Genuinely why wouldn't you offer testers for a modern orange sour.

We’ve met many lovely people in York on our holiday. We wish we hadn’t visited here because he wasn’t friendly at all. Asked to taste wine before buying which is standard and accepted but not by him. Dismissive and didn’t deserve trade. Too many nice pubs to give him trade. Avoid

One of my 'go to' pubs in York now. Great selection of drinks and the pints are always spot on. I went in around 1pm by myself to relax for an hour before meeting friends. Hands down the best pub in York. I could go on and on about the black sheep ales, the cider, the live music and the relentlessly friendly and upbeat staff! But, in all seriousness check it out for yourselves they are truly worth a visit.

It's a very nice pub, probably the best in York. If you are not sure which beer to order, they will tell you to try until you find the right one. I liked a creamy stout they have there, I think it is called "Milk Stout." The bartenders are also nice guys. Good service!!

The Three-Legged Mare was one of York Brewery's last remaining pubs in the City until Black Sheep bought them out in 2019, although it was sad to see the slow demise of York Brewery Black Sheep did at least invest some cash into the Mare, giving this old school boozer a much needed renovation and it's still in good nick today. The pub is named after the infamous three-legged gallows which are depicted on their sign and is affectionately known as the Wonky Donkey. It sits proudly on High Petergate between Bootham Bar and the Minster in a prime location. It's a light airy modern space with fresh white walls and dark grey half height wood panelling throughout. The warm glow from Eddison style industrial wall lights softens the simple pallet and a tough wooden bar top. With bistro style tables in the entrance area and more standing room around the large bar to the right. The Three-Legged Mare has quite a peaceful ambience most of the time, contrasting to a livelier bustling environment in the evenings, often with live music. The smart and clean toilets are accessed from the entrance room down a wrought iron spiral staircase into the basement and there are accessible toilets to the back of the conservatory, which is bright and inviting during the day but a little stark later on. Beyond this there's a tiny little yard with a couple of seats which is shame as there's much more outside space that could be utilised. The slight let-down on our last visit was the massive change on the bar, once upon a time there was a vast range of 10 casks and 10 kegs beers available, now the cask range is mostly just repeats of Black Sheep beers. Despite that the prices were pretty average and there were some more interesting beers on keg, so it's definitely still worth popping down to the Mare, just don't expect the once award winning range of beers under Black Sheep's management.

Of an evening an encampment of fiddle, bodhran and string players set up and open their lungs with some captivating arias. This place is also home to York’s most knowledgeable barman who talked us through every drink and more with such eloquence and erudition. I first came here after watching a game at York City twenty years ago and been a few times since. Boothroyd tells me that the Three Legged Mare was a hanging post for the times when having an opinion the ruling class hated was enough to hang you. Now coming back into fashion in the 2020's Woke State. Madge remembers it as a York Brewery bar but now Black Sheep .. two guest ales. I had a Half Moon Brewery Pale Ale. Long bar with another room to rear.

A group of us visited here on 16th December, we were sat on a small table in front of the bar chatting and drinking. We had come on the train from Sheffield to visit the Christmas markets and to go for a few drinks and food. As women do, three of us went to the toilet together and went into the cubicle together as girls often do. TMI but we were chatting and stuff whilst using the toilet and one of us came onto our period whilst in there. As we came out of the toilet one of the bar staff were outside waiting to use the toilet. We washed our hands and I noticed a basket of tampons on the side. I told my friend to take one and save it for later as she did not have any as was not expecting to start her period. She said she would be fine and I again said take one and save it for later to which she agreed. We rejoined the group and one of the group went to the bar to order some more drinks. Another of the bar staff then approached the table removed only one of the empty glasses then came back for another and said "just to let you know my college thinks you were sniffing in the toilet. We won't kick you out but don't do it again" and abruptly walked off before we were able to even defend ourselves! We were then declined service at the bar! As you can imagine we were shocked and annoyed but thought to ourselves there are many other pubs in York so it should be fine. Oh how we were wrong!!! The next place we tried to get in to refused us entry. At this point we were tipsy but in no way rowdy or overly intoxicated. When we questioned this, the bouncer explained we had been reported to all bouncers in York as a group taking drugs. We asked how they could possibly have known it was us, and the bouncer showed us a picture the bar staff in the Three Legged Mare had taken of us. We asked if they really thought we were taking drugs and the bouncers said not at all but they still couldn't let us in. So overall, we were refused service in a pub and blacklisted from all pubs in York for three girls using the toilet together! The bar staff who was outside the cubicle when we left was also a girl which baffles me even more as I'm sure girls going to the toilet together is a universal experience. Thank you for ruining our trip to York with your false accusations. Will not be returning.

We popped in on Friday while waiting for Kevin Sinfield to finish his first 7 in 7 at York Minster. Jack Merry was such a welcoming host and all of his barstaff were incredibly friendly too. When Kevin was due to arrive Jack and several of his lovely customers said we could leave our drinks and belongings on our table and they would look after them until we got back! When we got back Jack invited my group of friends to go behind the bar to have our photos taken. He then gave us a full tray of Rob Burrows IPA, and lots of Rob Burrows beermats to share between us as souvenirs! Above and beyond kindness!! The friendliness and banter was brilliant and we will definitely be back the next time we are in York. Thank you Jack and thank you to your fabulous staff too.

Came across this gem of a pub whilst strolling around York on a week’s holiday. So glad we did, lovely welcoming pub (both staff and clientele) and perfect for a few afternoon drinks. Whilst i stuck to the lager, it was interesting to see how popular the real ales were selling, maybe a hobby i need to partake in? On Saturday 12th August 2023, my Wife and I just happened to be passing this place and were drawn in by the excellent Music supplied by Reciprocals Music. Sadly this is where the good review ends. After finding a table, I approached the Bar. There were two Barmen. One with a Beard who seemed run of his feet serving customers and another who was standing there but doing his best to avoid serving. After making eye contact, I asked this Barman for a Beer and a J20. He looked at me and replied with what appeared to be a rude reply but pulled a Pint then walked off. When he came back some minutes later he asked me what else I wanted and I again asked for a J20 which he then got one out of the fridge. I had to then ask if we could have a glass. When I produced Cash he abruptly produced a Card Reader and I paid. Whilst sitting down near the Bar it was obvious that this same man was not pulling his weight leaving all the work to the other Barman. If I was the owner of thus Pub, he would have been sacked on the spot as he clearly is quite unsuitable due to his rudeness and lazy attitude !

We go in this pub every time we come to York (which is quite often). We went today with my service dog. We walked in and were shouted back by a member of bar staff and told we could only go in the front bar with a dog. We told her that she was a service dog (she had signs on her harness and I was wearing my badge). She wafted her arm at us and glared and said "Well if it's a service dog , I suppose you can sit anywhere." This was said in an extremely rude tone of voice, whilst still glaring at us. I suggest she attends a customer service course and acquaints herself with the Equality Act 2010.
