Stopped in for some lunch on a quiet sunny warm Thursday aft. Lovely little sun trap in a quiet small secluded beer garden by the river. Beef curry off the specials was well presented and delicious. Beer was also well kept and refreshing. Perfect

We ordered two Sunday roast dinners, one chicken and one pork. The meal came with a massive Yorkshire pudding. The whole meal was delicious and the bar staff very welcoming. Highly recommend eating here.

This place is amazing. They fit us in last minute on a busy Saturday night. Lots of staff all working very hard behind a busy bar serving meals. Very extensive menu which must surely suit every taste and while we waited a while for food (there was a board on the wall advising people during busy periods there may be a wait), this was understandable because when it arrived it was clearly freshly cooked and piping hot as well as delicious. Well worth waiting for! Will definitely go again!

Sunday Lunch at 5pm. Roast Pork ordered veg came on the plate I prefer I separately. Veg was over cooked the parsnips were soggy the gravy was very thin and poured all over the meal. It’s better to serve the gravy separately it also tasted very sweet/sugary. In the past I have had good meals here albeit it was a few years ago. I have used the pub on and off for over 30 years. Very noisy environment the table behind me had a guy swearing most of the time in conversation throughout the duration of my meal which was terrible. F ing and Jeffing most of the time. Not a great experience clearly a local who liked to bellow and curse while drinking in ordinary conversation. Friendly staff and attentive perhaps earlier in the day would be better. Not great today for me today.

Comfortable pub room but very small with limited space to move around. A large chair in a corner of what is already limited space made getting round the bed difficult. Suitable for a 1/2 night stay . Not very accessible as a room on an upper floor with a metal staircase which can be slippery when wet. Car Park is situated down a narrow lane between the pub and another building off a busy main road. Has limited spaces and tight however the staff were helpful in directing us to where we could park with other people leaving. Bad parking on the part of others meant a space couldn't be used. The pub was excellent with table service, good food and real ales from Black Sheep brewery. Staff were super friendly and kept us topped up all evening. we found out the pub is very dog friendly with quite a few in on the Friday night. I wasn't keen on that on a busy evening tripping over dog leads. Location is handy for a walk or bus into York town centre, the shambles market etc and if you want cheaper food or drink wetherspoons is across the road (you get what you pay for though). Room facilities were great considering the price point with a mini fridge, tea and coffee, wi-fi and ensuite shower. Quiet enough at night for a good comfortable sleep. Lose the chair though. Some bedding and curtains looked worn and could be replaced.

Stopped by for lunch and wasn't disappointed at the Mason Arms. I was met at the bar with friendly front of house staff and the food matched the welcome. toe t for meat and potato pie in the end and only just managed to eat it. Large menu at reasonable prices. With a nice selection of ales. Highly recommended if your passing for traditional home made cooked food.

Lovely traditional English pub on the outskirts of the city. The menu is also very traditional pub fayre but done very well and quite reasonably priced for york.

Rang up the Masons arms with little notice looking for a table for 6 , confirmed availability instantly . The service was great , food was excellent and a great atmosphere in the pub . Highly recommended .

Great pub with a relaxed atmosphere and good music. We went for the Sunday roast and it was delicious. All homemade and the best Yorkshire pudding! I highly recommend a visit.

Stayed here for two nights and ate here a couple of times , rooms small but very clean and food was brilliant. Staff in the bar were so friendly and welcoming and allowed us to keep our cases behind the bar on our last day. The Masons Arms are in a great location with only a five minute walk into the city centre. I would definitely recommend this unique character full tavern and would stay again on our next visit to York

Great night tonight, staying for a couple of nights on a whim, but I'm really pleased we did the Sunday roast was top-notch and the curry tomorrow sounds amazing. Update - Came back for the curry, mixed meat medley, the blend of spices was excellent, loads of flavour and not just heat. My wife had the veggie burger, it was home made rather than a shop bought pretend meat thing and was also delicious. Can't fault this place at all, a real gem

We came for food and drink not staying over. If the service is as good in the pub you won’t be disappointed it’s close to York walking distance I’d def stay here if visiting York as a traveller

We had enjoyed eating here a few years ago when we stayed at The Barbican; so, now with young black labrador in tow and staying at Rowntree Park CMC site, we returned. And we were not to be disappointed. Very olde worlde, with a fire alight to banish the Winter chills, we received great hospitality and great food at a great price. Erin was absolutely wonderful, though all staff welcoming and dog-friendly. We are sure to return. Thank you everyone, and keep up the good work!

There was a Sunday specific menu, so no chef special for the Sunday. I went with my family. It was a cosy pub with attentive staff. There were 3 options of ales, Black Sheep, Black Sheet blond and Timothy Taylor Landlord. We had Pate and Calamari for starters which was tasty, particularly the former. For main courses, we had roast beef, roast pork and, pie of the day, beef and potato pie. The Yorkshire puddings were massive, good quality of meats and food gravy. The pie was the best with melt in mouth beef and tasty pastry. The chips were chosen as the side of the pie, they were clearly homemade rather than standard frozen. I would highly recommend this place.

Really disappointed with what looked so promising. We booked for 6pm for 8 people during a visit to York. We ordered as soon as we arrived, however the mains didn't come out until after 8pm. We were ignored by staff, and kept having to ask where the food was. We had 3 kids with us, who all ended up in tears as they were so hungry and bored - waiting 2 hours for food is unacceptable. When the food came, it was terrible. We had 3 steaks which were all ordered medium or rare, but all overcooked (even for well done) extremely dry, and very poor quality cuts of meat. Trying to find a positive the chips were good, and they knocked the price of one steak off after we complained, but overall it was terrible, and would rather have paid full price for some nice food served in decent timeframe.

Went to the Mason's Arms while visiting York with family. We stopped for an evening meal which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Most of us had the steak and potato pie, which was delicious with fresh vegetables and rich gravy. The meat was plentiful and tender with a good helping of fluffy mashed potato on the side. All meals were very flavoursome and had great portion sizes. There was a great range of drinks all reasonably priced with great customer service, located just outside the walls of the city centre. Would definitely recommend and cannot wait to return!

We Stayed In a nearby hotel and went here for food on a Monday evening. The atmosphere was amazing with the fire lit and a few other people at the bar drinking and talking, not chaotic but relaxed. The service was outstanding with a lovely waitress who promptly took our order and checked if everything was okay. Food was exceptional. Fresh and homely, you could tell it was made with passion. Overall an experience that needs to be had if you are in York. 10/10 will be dining here again.

We went to this pub 2 nights running as the food was SO good ! We loved the welcoming staff , tasty exceptional food , great value , lovely ambiance & background music . Next time we are in York we will be back .

It's a Christmas tradition for our family to have food and drinks at the Masons. They have never been more than accommodating which is especially lovely, now the family is growing with little humans each year. The home cooked food is gorgeous, and the atmosphere is cosy and festive, perfect Christmas eve outing. 10/10 recommend.

Room was quite small, but clean, and brilliant location, and excellent value for money. Food was incredible, and staff were very friendly.

We had wonderful meals in this lovely pub this evening. We received a warm welcome & got the last table for food & we thoroughly enjoyed the pie of the day & fish & chips meals that were tasty large portions & the pies were packed with filling . We enjoyed the music & ambiance of the pub & the staff were especially friendly. We will be back .

Ate here twice during our visit to York . Plenty of choice on the menu catering for all tastes/diet preferences. Food is freshly prepared ,good quality ,generous portions and we throughly enjoyed the meals we had .... Sea Bass , French chicken , beef skewers, beefburger. Reasonable prices . Great service. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere . If visiting the nearby York Barbican ,ideal for pre theatre meal. Would defiantly come back .

The homemade pie was large and very tasty, the fish was crisp and full of flavour. Drinks represented good value. The staff were attentive and very polite.

Had soup , was ok, needs more seasonings in it in my opinion and butter with the bread.

We went to the Mason arms for a meal after going to the minster carol concert. Excellent service and excellent food

Me and my partner are locals and often pop in for a drink, maybe a bit of calamari to nibble here and there (best calamari I've ever tasted). Last week however we had a little reason to celebrate and opted to treat ourselves to dinner. We had the king prawn curry and sea bass and weren't disappointed...the food was astromically good. The fish was fresh, the sauce was perfect, the sun-dried tomatoes were to die for. As a couple we're really big into seafood dishes and these meals far exceeded our expectations. Had it been socially acceptable to lick my plate I would have done. So so so good. The Masons are catering for my 40th birthday party next year and I'm really excited about the quality food that will be served to my guests. Can't wait...especially for that calamari. Mmmm-mmm!!

Visited here for the first time Saturday 7th dec with work friends the weather was terrible but once inside was so warm and cosy there was eight of us and the food was amazing piping hot all arrived at same time staff were so accommodating and couldn’t help enough what a lovley day we had thankyou we will defo be back

We were there with large group of extended family. One section all to ourselves. Good food, efficient service, all good 👍!

Such a warm and welcoming community pub! Very comfortable, with a fireplace, and excellent food. Spent a cosy night dining in the pub and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

Went into the Masons Arms initially for dinner then were going into the town center, Entering the pub we were welcomed by friendly staff , we ordered The steak pie and chicken supreme . Thr food arrived in good time and was delicious and a very good portion. The place had such a warm atmosphere we decided to stay for the evening chatting with locals and staff. Would definitely recommend

One night stay. Room had everything we needed. Double bed which was really comfy . Wardrobe.Tv. Clean. Excellent tea and coffee facilities, but no decaf option (But didn't ask either) Bathroom a little out dated, but fully working and clean. Room was quiet. Excellent location. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend.

Stayed here as it was so close to The Barbican and SO glad we did. Amazingly friendly bar offered food that looked so wholesome we decided to eat here before we went in search of a bar to watch the GP ( O’Neil’s was about a 10 minute walk away ) my Roast Beef dinner was gorgeous, very “homemade” and delicious, Trev had fish and chips and was very happy. We had drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere SO much, we had to visit the bar again after Guenther Steiner, great fun. Our room was warm & comfy and very reasonably priced. We will definitely stay longer next time! And there will be a next time.

The Masons Arms is a lovely traditional multi roomed historic pub. There is a good selection of beers, lager and cider including three hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales which were in excellent condition when we visited. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and there is a large beer garden with some covered seating and a terrace with a great view over the river foss. The pub has an unspoiled original interior from 1935 and is dog friendly. Highly recommended.

Although the pub was very busy staff managed to find us a table, then moved us to a more spacious one when one became available. Menu was varied and very reasonably priced, all four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals! The sharing platter was especially delicious! Good selection of real ales and a very welcoming environment, the staff were so helpful and cheery. Will certainly be returning!!

The staff are attentive, polite, helpful, polite and totally customer satisfaction focused. Recommended! An almost rarity today in the hospitality environment.

Stayed here for The Cult who played at the Barbican - a reasonable price. A great welcome from the staff who were warm and friendly. Ate dinner here - we both had pie which was very tasty - the crust was very tough which was the only negative. Nice options of drinks available with the Timothy Taylor kept well. We had room number 1 which was nice and far enough away from the road to minimise the noise. The room itself was nice and clean in the room however the bathroom could have been a bit cleaner - the shower head was very mouldy. The bed seemed small in length as we both struggled to stretch out without our feet resting on the edge. Room was nice and warm although could have done with a wider blind to stop the light coming in. Nice to have Car Park that’s free although could easily pass so keep your eyes peeled as you approach the pub. Returned for drinks in the evening prior to the gig and enjoyed the atmosphere - the bar staff were really good in finding us a table to seat 11 of us. We both said when visiting York next time we would stay here. Thank you for making our stay memorable.

A wonderful place with good service. Very large portion of Meat and Potatoe pie. Staff very friendly. Highly recommended. Might also consider as a B and B if l'm stopping in York. A special thank you to Beth and jess for the welcome and super service today. What a credit to the place.

Had a couple of nights in York recently and had the pleasure of dropping into this pub. The whole experience was great , fabulous decor,very clean and clearly popular, it retains an atmosphere lost in most modern pubs this together with a very friendly staff who even came around the tables to see if you wanted another round was a nice gesture, thanks to all there and special thanks to the lovely Freya

We’ve been in before and thought it was great, second time and it certainly is. TT Landlord as good as it gets and BS Blonde great quality. Nice atmosphere for a Monday night too. Just out of York but definitely recommended.

Location is great if visiting Grand Opera house or the Barbican, also very close to Clifford Tower. We stayed as a couple for one night, room was small but addiquate for the short stay. We had a lovely meal in the pub below us, would recommend car park v.small only 5 cars at a push. Number Lock gate for security.

Room was on the small side, with no maid service, but functional. That said, I would stay there again anytime I'm in York. Staff were very accommodating, nothing too much trouble, they treat us like friends. Very helpful and gave us ideas for places to see whilst we were there. Food was home made and delicious, the plates were full, you will never go hungry after eating here

Great place to have a drink and food. Cosy atmosphere and very friendly staff. Slight mix up with the risotto but was rectified very quickly. Mason burger was fab.

The Mason Arms rooms are converted stables and the original pub. This lends itself to smaller rooms and bathroom facilities, but nothing that could not be overcome. Garden bar near rooms did have some noise issues, but it is a pub so should be expected. Cannot fault the staff, location (right next to Fishergate in the York wall) and we had a delightful meal at the pub. Parking is tight, but can be done with a few turns of the steering. Busy place, we tried to extend our stay to no success. 5 Adults booked 3 rooms. Historic venue, worth staying here.

Don't often do reviews these days but this was exceptional. Food was very good and service also great. Real Ale was spot on. Great experience and reasonable prices.

I pre-booked a table for Sunday’s dinner. The pub has lovely decor and a nice atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and the food came out fast. Our meals were very tasty and the Yorkshire puddings were huge!

The staff were fantastic. Dog friendly pub, they gave my dog Max treats which he enjoyed. The Sunday lunch we had was fantastic with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I've ever had. Would highly recommend.

Sunday roast is a must! You'll never see a bigger yorkie pud on your plate! Staff are so friendly, make you feel at home. Food is fab!

Ordered fish and chips There was a large black item stuck to the bottom of the obviously greasy fish The whole dish was totally unappetising The server when asked to explain the black item went to the chef who said it was batter from a previous fish We pointed out it was pure black and certainly was not from a previous fish To be absolutely fair they did not argue the point but did not charge

I attended the masons arms with my boyfriend for a meal and a drink. Due to the races, it was busy. I recommended booking a table if you're planning on having a meal. We didn't book, and we were lucky to get a table. The staff are helpful and friendly. When we were ready we ordered our meals. My boyfriend had steak pie, and I had shepherd's pie. When our meals arrived, both of our meals were big portions and looked very nice. I have to say both of us enjoyed our meals and most definitely will be going to the masons arms again only next time we will book a table.

Excellent range of GF options. I went for the burger and chips which was tasty and perfectly cooked. Prices are reasonable compared to other York city centre pubs. Only criticism is the pub has no GF beer.

Definitely a cosy, nice looking place, however the staff are weird to say the least. The very second we walked through the door we were pounced on asking if we were there to eat or drink, before we had even looked at a menu or decided if we wanted to stay. Having got 2 drinks and sat down, the three young lasses behind the bar then took turns turning around and giggling behind their hands. I felt like asking what they were laughing at, but didn't want to make a scene. Quite possibly the rudest pub we have ever visited! Obviously this is a locals pub and if they don't recognize you, they'll make you so painfully uncomfortable you drink up and leave. We downed our 2 ciders as quickly as possible and went to the Phoenix around the corner which was much friendlier. Avoid!

Excellent pub with plenty of outdoor seating. Some with a river view. Excellent choice of drink and food. You must try their Mason Burger. Probably the best burger I have ever tasted. Comes with proper chips.

Booked for 10 people for a Saturday evening prior to visiting the York Barbican. Ther accommodated us with no problems whatsoever, our food was all cooked from scratch without us having to pre-order. Every dish came out together and every dish was hot and perfectly cooked. 10 very happy diners who will definitely return

Fabulous food and service from this pub. We had the beef cheeks and the salmon, both came promptly and were lovely. Definitely a place to visit away from the madding crowds of the city center.

We have been in the UK for five days now and have eaten at many restaurants this is the best dinner we've had, probably the best dinner I've ever had at any restaurant overall. I had the Shepherd's Pie and I can't say enough good things about it, I wanted a straw for the brown gravy. My friend had the chicken supreme and it was delicious too. The fish and chips are good too. The Sticky Pie! If you are looking for a fabulous meal in York, please go here! Plus everyone working was so nice and welcoming!
