Madge reminded me of my visit here in 1993. It was a Saturday and The Grand National Steeplechase was on. Captain Cockup set half the horses off. The other half did not start. Oh well, google it. Good pub but only two real ales on today. Lovely old world interior. Had a good pint of Rudgate Battlefield bitter. ( Lots of battles here abouts ..victory for the English at Stamford Bridge over the Vikings in 1066 led a few days later to the Normans taking a 1000 year control of England. Almost all our Elite are still their descendants!) Small rear beer patio. Like the music. Cask Marque pub.

What a beautiful pub, came in for a drink during ghost week and I will be returning. Friendly bar person and felt really relaxed and lovely. Would recommend. Entrance door is to the left, I assume some people may get confused how to get in or think it's part of the pub next door. I originally walked in the pub next door for a drink and I walked out again and came into this one and I'm glad I did. Really loved the atmosphere and the genuine feel I got from the staff

We’ve been going to the slipper for quite a few years and always enjoyed it as it was our first port of call into York . However on visiting yesterday found the price increases for wine was astronomical!! Charging boutique style wine bar prices in an old tired pub with no toilet paper isn’t good!! Just because it’s had a lick of paint and a few cheap accessories added , doesn’t justify the price hike . Sorry to say won’t be back ! Which is a shame as it is a great pub . Clearly aimed at tourists unfortunately!

Visited here on a busy Saturday in York, we were the second people in the bar and asked for a food menu to be told that food starts at 12.30pm so we said no problem and waited the 20 mins. When 12.30 hit, the bar was pretty full and the bar man laid 3 menus down for the whole pub (excluding our table despite us notifying him that we wanted to buy food). These menus were meant to be shared amongst everyone but we were not told this so by the time we got to order food it was an hour wait. We decided against it and were offered no apology. The older barman with the long hair had a horrible attitude and was truly unpleasant to be served by - he should really reassess his customer service skills. Tip for management: print some more menus off.

Looking for somewhere to eat and walked past the pub to see someone tucking into a roast beef dinner. Decided there and then to give it a try. We were not disappointed in fact we were highly delighted! The food wasn't your usual microwaved pub grub, it was just like a home cooked dinner. Delicious. I was too full for a dessert but my growing son had the black forest gateau which he said was awesome. We will be back next time we visit York. Sausage and Mash, the sausages where meatless and didn’t resemble a sausage, mash potato lumpy and tasted weird. Lumpy gravy. Fish finger sandwich, cheap fish fingers in a cheap white bread cake. Called in yesterday lunchtime and had a lovely pub meal. Prior to ordering the food, we were informed that there could be a 45 minute wait. This wasn’t an issue as it was nice to sit down, have a nice beer and chill out from the hustle and bustle of York city centre. The food was really tasty. I had gammon, egg and real proper home cooked chips!! My wife had the steak and ale pie (which I had a taste of!) and it was one of those where the steak melted in your mouth, delicious! Having eaten next door at The Royal Oak, my partner and I decided to give this place a try. We wanted to sample as many of York's pubs as possible. Previous reviews mentioned a rude landlord and curious gluttons for punishment as we are, we felt compelled to view the place (and gentleman) for ourselves. He did not disappoint. I like real ale and like to support local breweries wherever I travel. On viewing the relatively decent selection of hand pulls at the bar (Perhaps as many as 5?) I asked if one particular beer was local. He laughed. Literally laughed at me for asking. And walked off. Another server politely said it was not a local beer and further questions finally gleaned that there was no particularly local beer available tonight. I forget what I drank. I didn't really care by that point. We stayed for one to 'tick the pub off' the list and left. There are many better pubs nearby, like next door.

Noticed this pub was completely empty as we were passing so thought we'd help boost their sales. We soon realised why it's empty. They were unwelcoming and awkward about my friend's assistance dog and said the dog wasn't allowed. We had to explain what an assistance dog was and my friend is registered disabled (not a great , welcoming start). The barmaid put her glasses on and leaned over the bar to inspect his harness before we were allowed to order a drink..... I asked what white wine they had and they only had one. I asked if I could try a tiny taste to make sure I liked it - no that's not allowed either. We promptly left before any more rules could be forced upon us and headed down the road where our custom was more welcome.

We go in this pub every time we come to York (which is quite often). We went today with my service dog. We walked in and were shouted back by a member of bar staff and told we could only go in the front bar with a dog. We told her that she was a service dog (she had signs on her harness and I was wearing my badge). She wafted her arm at us and glared and said "Well if it's a service dog , I suppose you can sit anywhere." This was said in an extremely rude tone of voice, whilst still glaring at us. I suggest she attends a customer service course and acquaints herself with the Equality Act 2010.

Popped in for a beer and despite the wide variety of beers the bar staff were incredibly rude and grumpy. Definitely no jolly publican here! Ask for a tester of a beer and that's a big no! Genuinely why wouldn't you offer testers for a modern orange sour.
